- This easy to tie All Purpose mayfly nymph pattern uses silver fox tail hair for the tail and body. You can vary the colors of the thorax and wingcase to match several mayflies.

Great recovery on that hackle!!! Id’a ended up with my pliers in my neighbors yard when that happens to me! 😂😂. And I never make a big deal about having a ‘buggy’ fly either……..turns out that they’ll catch trees just fine! Mine always do, anyways.

Most fly tiers use squirrel tails and some skin fur for dubbing as you mentioned, but they almost always overlook the whiskers... I have been using them for tails on mayflies since the early 1980's... If you hunt, or have friends who hunt, have them pluck out or cut off the whiskers located at the nose and above the eyes, I store mine in a letter envelope... They are extremely durable and support the fly well...

Matt that is a good looking fly. Cool to use the fox hair for the body. I love it when you go all "improv" on a fly, fun to watch you make it look beautiful.

Really nice looking nymph! Because it can be tied slender, I can see it working really well in a 16 or 18 for a little black winter stonefly nymph.

Nice tie Matt. That’s a nymph you can really do many things to. I think I would change the wing case to a red tinsel and make it a hot 🥵 spot.

Great looking fly Matt,nicely done.I saw one of the big time RUclips tiers do a trick with the lead wire.Roger showed me this trick long ago.Never seen it done on RUclips before.Take your wire and flatten the tip of the wire with something round,I use a small shot glass.A extra step, but makes for a great taper on the fly.Great looking fly you did,Cloie will love it.Have a great weekend Matt. Wow. Great use of material. After seeing the blue wing case at the start, I thought that you were going to tie an Atherton nymph, but no this doesn’t have a hare’s ear body. It’s different.
Nice job! Those guard hairs make a really slick looking body, & the underfur makes a convincing thorax. I wonder if a small bunch of the guard hairs could also be used as legs right from wrapping the body. Now, who should we contact to register the fly name & pattern. ;-)
Funny you mention the Atherton; I was thinking of mentioning that in the intro. I actually thought about using the guard hairs (folded back) for legs, like the AP Black Beaver. That might have worked if I used the fox hair for the wing case... but I kind of liked the blue Atherton look. 🙂

hi MATT great fly so my shop has no blue duck so he said I could use blue floss? also would you put resin on the wing case if no why not just think it would make it shine more?
Good day Matt. Nice nymph! Like the blue wing case. The under fur thorax's looks great. I think using a coffee blender to shorten up the length would be helpful. What do you think?
Thanks Nich! Keep in mind that a coffee grinder won't actually cut hair or fur but you could cut it into smaller chunks with scissors and the grinder would blend it nicely.
Another nice one Matt. I take it that fox tail wasn't intended for fly tying by the hardware on the butt of it. Was it a craft store find by any chance? Keep the good stuff coming.
How did I miss this comment?? And nope, you are right. I found the fox tail at my county fair. It had a little key chain clasp on it. But still, that thing is freaking nice! Holy cow it is going to last forever and the underfur was crazy soft and just a little bit greasy to make it easy to dub.
I was hoping to see the entire fly made from the fox hair and underfur.
Is that next?
You know, I almost tried that by folding the butt ends of the hairs back for the legs, but I wouldn't have been able to put a blue wingcase on it. And I really wanted to add a touch of color to it. :-)
@@SavageFlies If it pleases you,, I was thinking more along the lines of this:
- Stack the fox tail guard hairs and even the tips.
- Cut these to length, and tie them with the tips over the EYE. Their butt ends should be part of the thorax
- Then, tie in whatever you want for a wing case, and fill in the thorax with some of the dubbing.
- Now, with the open end of a ballpoint pen or some similar tubular thing, push the hair tips back over the eye and reverse them towards the rear, and hold them in place with some wraps.
At this point, fold your wing case forward, and tie it down.
Voila! Nymph legs made from the hair, itself.
And if you made the wing case from the same hair, it wouldn’t have that splash of color, but the whole thing would be a Hair Nymph!
Well, that was my idea, anyway. LOL

Primarily trout, or any cold water fish that feed on aquatic insects.
could you guys tie a carp or tilapia fly please?
