IDK why honda thought it was a good idea to make the door handle a flimsy plastic but hey look how far we've come and im still coming back to this video every two years haha
TIP for other DIYers....... At 4:26 he says to reinstall the lock cylinder retaining clip. If this is a new door handle such as the Dorman, make sure before hand there isnt already a new retainimg clip in place(they're meant to allow the cylinder to slide into place and already be retained, just like the retaining clip on a manual crank window handle). I fought and cussed for 10 minutes trying to insert the retaining clip before I realized there was already a new one in there. I saw it before hand too and didnt even think about it. Not until I reversed everything and tried to remove the cylinder and plate so I could get a better look out in the open and realized I couldn't get the lock cylinder off again(because it was already retained with new clip). In fact, if your new handle does NOT have one, it would be better to just insert the retaining clip while the door handle is out, and then continue with installation. The lock cylinder and inside plate will just snap in place and the cylinder will already be retained.
Thank you for this! Solved my problem. Wasn't too difficult for me to do. You guys should do more of these old honda videos. Everyone's trying to buy the old late 90s and fix them up because they are awesome fun cars to work on. And you literally can't kill a honda ❤️😂 lol

Excellent explanation. Have replaced door handle no worries (well put the lock into the new handle backwards and had a hell of a time getting it back out to reinsert the other way round, whoopsie). Thank you so much for help.
At 3:30, it's kinda hard to see what he's doing. I removed the spring that recenters the lock instead of the holding clip. So to anybody who's trying to do this, don't make that same mistake! The clip is kinda hard to see. Its hidden up in there and there's a little slit in the bottom so you can get to it.
This is 8 yrs too late but if they had to warn you that you could crack an old part you probably aren't smart enough to be doing the repair yourself anyway 🤣
I have a 1997 prelude both handles are broken and i was checking the one from civics they look the same my question is if the civic will fit on the prelude?
Ok so my door doesn't have that much space to work with. I'm working blind for the most part. wonder why they didn't leave it more open on the metal frame. The part that connects to the handle that goes down to the actual latch fell off and my hands aren't small enough to fit in and figure out how to put it back. So frustrating.
How do you fix the door system if the handle on the outside doesnt open the door unless you turn the key lock all the way at the same time and what needs to be re attached or replaced if the inside handle wont open the door? Just bought one where this happens on all doors bar the the front passengers. Thanks
any tips on if you have the manual window crank instead of power windows? I can't get the door panel off because the window crank is still keeping it attached. Thanks!
I know this is 5 yrs old, but I'll share a trick to getting manual crank window handles off, for others. The shaft its on has a groove all the way around near the end. On the back of the crank handle is a U shaped retaining clip(sort of like the one in this vid for the lock cylinder). On some it can go on either way, up or down(in relation to the handle up or down) but most slide on going away from the knob end your hand holds. Heres the trick....... Crank the window until the extended part of the handle(where your hand goes) is straight up. Get an old rag you dont mind tearing up, kitchen towel, old T shirt, whatever. Fit the fabric in between the crank handle and the door panel(or thin plastic washer/spacer if it has it, and then start pulling up gently and pull the fabric side to side like your two old loggers with a 2 man saw. Sort of like *up on the left-up on the right-up on the left-up on the right. If that makes sense. The fabric will catch the little ears on each side of the clip and pull it up and release it. If it doesnt work, turn the crank handle 180 degrees(down) and start again with the fabric being pulled up left/right/left/right/left etc. Hope that makes sense.
My handle to the drivers side. The handle itself is not broken,but... I have to open my door with the window down & open my door from the outside. I heard something fall in the door . So that means I would probably have something that snapped off or broken.
Hi gang, I've got an 02 Civic. A thief busted my rear passenger door handle. If I average out this video with your Accord video, will I more or less have the general idea of what to do?
I dont know if thise channel is still active but id very much appreciate if someone could assist me. The issue i have is that before and after i change the door handle it still wont open from the outside and i have to pull real hard for it to open from the inside

The lock cylinder retaining clip was a bitch. I couldn't get to it. Finally I used a power tool to cut the old plastic handle down the middle and removed it from the outside. Then I could remove the clip. What should have been an hour job took over four. The video glosses over some of the hard parts.

How do you carefully remove the plastic hinge with the metal bracket to completely remove the handle with it snapping ?
Wow nice
thanks man you helped me alot. and how can i fix the doors lock?
Thank You Very helpful

What about the back door is it the same?
Is this the same process for a four door rear exterior door handle?
Thanks a lot!
Is this pretty much the same for replacing the exterior door handle for a 1999 honda CRV?

Mike Mora It’s the same concept, but easier lmao. Don’t cry.
For anyone trying this on a 2 Dr Honda LX coupe from 98 to 02 just know the plastic is dry and ready to break. Be careful
