- We're planting traditional Portuguese grapes for making wine.
And look inside the old wine making cellars on our homestead.
We're located in the Dao wine making region and plan to make red wine and aguardente in the future.
Last year we restored the 150-year-old vine terraces - • Restoring 150 year old...
Thanks for watching and we hope you enjoy.
Meraid and Dan
You're 2 busy bee's😂. I just enjoy watching!
We simply love working on the land. Thank you 😊
You are two energetic people who admirably solve all household problems, including gardening.
You write such lovely comments. Thank you 😊
What you guys doing is great physical therapy ! Love your video
Thank you 😊
You are doing an excellent job, not just in restoring the farm, but also improving it with new varieties grapes which will serve you well in your wine making future😊. Loving how energetic and determined you both are, and how well you work together to achieve your goals❤
So nice of you. Thank you 😊
Your hard work is really paying. The place looks great! I can’t wait to see the vineyard growing.
Thanks so much!
I love it, you're focused on the vines whilst your house crumbles in the background, brilliant.
Lovely music.
Thank you. The house is holding on but hopefully ready before the vines produce grapes 🍇. Glad you enjoyed the music. 😊
I would have made the same decision. While the house is not falling down, the grapes need to be established now. I trust that the Veggies can walk and chew gum at the same time. That means doing necessary repairs at the same time as vital spring garden chores need to be done.
I had never thought to use my grape prunings for kindling!
It’s a really great resource. 👍
Your positive energy and willingness to stick with a task until it is completed will have your homestead thriving in no time! The wall and vines look nice. You are making big improvements. Cheers.
Yes! Thank you so much 😊
Hi , Where are you in Portugal exactly. I have a small plot of land with vines and Fruit trees near Oliveria de Hospital, Coimbra region. Got me inspired to tackle some of those cleaning jobs yesterday. Can I contact you directly ?
Thumbs up x 👍🏻👍🏻 will watch later
Thanks, Sandy. Hope you enjoy it. 😊
@@NearbyVeggies off to bed now to enjoy x
Thank you 😊
Another lovely video! Your garden with the terraces are beautiful! And I love the views of the house! Today I noticed the arched trellises leading to the garden from the house. At least that is what it looked liked to me. So pretty, can't wait to see when it is covered with flowers. Thanks again for sharing your story!
We’re looking forward to seeing the plants grow over the arch too. 😊
I am far less strong than you. you work so much! Veganism obviously gives a lot of power. Greetings from Termas de Monfortinho again 👋😊👍
It’s determination that gives us the most energy. The veggies help. Hope you’re not too cold over in Termas de Monfortinho. 😊
@@NearbyVeggies Temperatures aren't the problem. It's more the humidity. And that has now fallen sharply, which greatly improves the situation. As soon as the sun has free access, it is warm, even if the thermometer reads 12°C!
I can't wait to see the trees growing up.
They are already looking bigger. Thank you 😊
Eline emeğine sağlık bu güzel vlog için kolay gelsin hayırlı işler....👍👍👍👍
Thank you 😊
Wwwwww come vi invidio immensa natura solo per voi lavorate duro ma con tanta soddisfazione bravissimi ❤
Thank you 😊
Lovely village life. I liked it too much
Thank you 😊
I found your blog by chance. :-)When you found gunpowder, I backed away from the computer. :-)
It's nice to follow your work.
Thank you. Hope you have a great time watching. 😊
I can't wait to see the results of all your hard work come spring and summer...glad to see you may revive the still and wine production. Here in Singapore we can get Portuguese vinho verde, which works well with the hot climate at either lunch or dinner. Good luck and God bless.
We spent many hot summer days with a nice vinho verde for our picnic. 👍
You 2 are definitely going to tame the horses! Love your channel.
That's the plan! We’ll have a bit of a wait but I’m sure it will be worth it. 😊
That was lovely! It's-17c here this morning, so gardening will have to wait another 2 months!
Oh wow! Brr 🥶
All the Best for your Vineyard 👍
Thank you 😊
I like the vibes on your farm
Thank you 😊
Best of luck to you! You are really dedicated, energetic and motivated couple! It's really hard work!
My family had over 200 vines in Ukraine plus a small farm with fruit trees, vegetables, flowers, berries etc. When I was a kid I hated to go to farm to work, I wanted to play with other kids. But mainly that farm helped us to survive once hard times have came in 90's and 00's. Now all destroyed and turned to dust by russian "liberation"...
Watching your videos makes me feel happy and sad at the same time. Happy seeing you together taking care about your farm. But sad because I'll never see my parents again working at the farm. Anyway thank you for your work, your videos, your story!
Thank you and we’re delighted you found a little joy watching the videos. 😊
always plant 2 sticks of grapes together in case one fails, dripping irrigation will save you time ,,,best luck for your beautiful new life
Thank you. We definitely need a drip irrigation system. It’s on the long list of jobs. 👍
@@NearbyVeggies please google : Gravity irrigation system: it won't cost you much , you may get free pipes somewhere, please plants few fig trees for me :), I will keep watching:)
That barn mantel is amazing ! Just subscribed.
Thank you and welcome. We agree. It's amazing.
You folks are living the dream and doing a good job of it too. That chipper was the best tool to buy it will make a lot of wood chips with Dan feeding it. Lets hope you are blessed with some rain this year. Cheers enjoy the cheese lol.
You got that right! Best piece of machinery. Raining now and the cheese is getting up to room temperature 😊
Can't wait to see what you do to the house. Are you going to have an outdoor kitchen for summertime.
We already have a covered outdoor kitchen with a big working bread oven. 👍😊
Good idea with the raffia!
Thank you 😊
The vines were maybe too close to the wall, the soil there will be really dry & in the rain shadow of the wall. I usually plant 18”” out at least from any wall and add a hugecamount of organic matter to the planting hole. Hope the new ones ‘do’ for you.
Thank you. Not nearly enough water last year , hopefully we’ll be blessed with plenty of rain this year. 👍
@@NearbyVeggies Just a thought - We live in a similar rainfall area to you, in South Australia. We put cardboard around our newly planted fruit trees too, and then covered it with about 10cm of wood mulch, but after a few months, we removed the cardboard, because the rain and watering were running through the mulch, and off the cardboard, because cardboard contains some sort of wax to make them slightly water repellant. The result was a bright green ring of grass growing around the edge of the cardboard. The tree wasn't getting the water. We then removed the cardboard and replaced the mulch. The trees are doing much better since we removed the cardboard. The mulch keeps the weeds at bay, although we do still have to keep an eye on them of course. :)
There is an excellent lecture on youtube, by an associate professor of horticulture at Washington State University, called Dr Linda Chalker-Scott, called "Mulches, the good, the bad and the really, really ugly". It's worth a look. Best of luck. I really admire all that you are both doing.
Our cardboard isn’t plastic coated. It’s working well. We did the same as you with all our young trees and the ground underneath is lovely and moist. The cardboard has already broken down. 😊
Oh , and thank you for the pointer to that lecture. Appreciate it. 👍
And if it is lime stone that will effect it
Looking forward to seeing the vines in bloom, great work. I'm also a fan of cardboard and mulch, my biggest gardening mistake was laying down membrane. I'm still pulling it out, 20 years later. X
Definitely agree with the membrane. We did it too many many years ago on our Allotment. Never again. It was a mesh of weeds. 👍
I wonder if you guys are in your 50 s or 60s ? Full of energy! Just watching you make me tired 😂
Nobody is is in their 60’s 😊
It would be helpful if you can sometime updates us as what is happening about the house? I came late to your channel so I am in the dark😊
Coming soon! We’re hoping to have news about the house shortly. 👍
I really enjoy your vlogs and I hope your grape vines take off! I have been there, done that, on my property in Western Australia. My children when they were young, were my virginal little foot stompers and crushed the grapes. We made some really nice wine - eventually!! I really think we cornered the market in verjuice the rest of the time and we had a fabulous time making it. I wish you both every success. Kind regards Kym
Oh wow! What a lovely story. Thank you for sharing. 🤠🤠
Bom dia 😊
Boa tarde, Ana. Obrigada ☺️
I have found that grapes thrive in quite poor soil, good drainage, so it might have been good to mix some gravel in the bottom of planting.
They don't need much fertiliser, I have found...I didnt cut back the first or second year, had bountiful grapes the third year.
Just my experience.
Thanks for the information. Our soil is quite free draining because of the natural schist. We hope to have enough water to get them through the summer heat. 😊
Everything is looking lovely. Watching you two is very calming to my soul..
Would you telling us again typed out the name of the wine. Thank you
I think we talked about the aguardente which is a distilled drink made from grapes.
Our wine region is the Dão.
It's always so nice to see you two. Thank you for another fine video.
Our pleasure. Thanks for a lovely encouraging comment. 😊
Hão-de conseguir tudo o que desejam, pois trabalham com amor, o produto da Vossa dedicação será sempre algo muito especial. Saúde e bom tempo para o Vosso projecto😎

Property is looking amazing! Looking forward to the wine making video.😊
Can't wait!
HI...VEGGIES...........IT'S ME YOUR FRIEND.....I USE TO SEE EVERY V LOG OF YOURS WHENEVER I GET A NOTIFICATION..... IT'S A SUGGESTION WHENEVER YOU WANT TO PLANT A TREE IN THE SOIL YOU HAVE TO GRAFT IT IN A SEPARATE VESSEL FIRST, AFTER A CERTAIN HEIGHT THEN PLANT IT INTO THE SOIL IT WILL NEVER DIE..........HOPE YOU GOT MY POINT........
Thank you for the tip. 👍
@@NearbyVeggies once u soak it in water for a while & get some roots they will ready.
thanks for trying as much as you can to speack my language your lovelly
Muito obrigada. 😊
Try to get hold of sheep’s wools and put under your vines ,wine maker in Wales have tried and works and make the grapes sweeter and keep the weeds and pests way 😊good luck 🍀
That’s interesting. Does your wine maker friend use his wool straight after the shearing or does he process it in some way first?
I love watching your videos! They inspire me to move to Portugal - an old retirement plan as I love Portuguese people, their culture and speak the language. I am already looking for properties in the south.
What I like the most in your vídeos is your strength you put in your plans!
Great. All the best with your plans 👍😊
Looking good. I hope the vines do well. Regards from Victoria, Australia.
Thanks so much. 😊
A vossa quinta está a ficar linda e muito bem organizada. Admiro o planeamento do vosso trabalho, até parece fácil.

Hi, what a lovely video, everything looks beautiful, can’t wait to see your grapevine grow. I was just curious about your home, why you have not started rebuilding? Stay well and continue success.
Thank you. We hope to have some news about the restoration of the house soon. We’ll keep you updated. 👍
Your videas are so relaxing. Hope the new plantings grow.
Hopefully not so relaxing you fall asleep 😴 Thank you 😊
I like to see you working together with out correcting each other...take care yourself
Thanks Cicilia. 😊
Well done 👏🏼 lovely video. Can’t wait to see those vines grow!
Us too! Thank you 😊
So excited to see how the vines grow! The stonework around your property is beautiful!
Thanks so much. We’re looking forward to seeing them grow too. Hopefully we’ll have enough water this year. 😊
I'm really enjoying seeing how you are taking care of the land and improving the gardens, orchards and vineyards.
I'm looking forward to seeing renovations on your future home so you can truly have veggies nearby and live on site!
I'm assuming you are waiting for permission to start renovations as I understand that is a big hurdle. Maybe waiting for workers and materials too?
I love what you've done already wish I could come and help as I wait for our snow to leave and get at our garden here in Canada.
You’re absolutely right. We hope to have news about the renovation soon. 😊
hi you should soak the ground be you plant so when you did the hole put water in first then the plant
They are all growing so far. 👍
Oh my gosh! I can’t get enough of watching you 2 go ! So much energy ❤
Everything is looking stunning!🤩
You're the best! Thank you 😊
Also another tip...if you do not want to do the sand pre planting then when u get your bare root plants place them in a bucket of water for at least one day....then plant.
We soaked one batch overnight and another for a couple of hours. 👍😊
O lugar é belíssimo e vocês com muito trabalho e capricho estão transformando num paraíso. Tudo aí é lindo ! Parabéns pelo vídeo !
Muito obrigados 😊🤠
Such peaceful place.
I watched it all hoping to hear more of your plans, to no avail.
Hoping to have news on the renovations soon. 👍
You need to trim the roots first and keep roughly around two three inch of roots and put those stokes lower than what you're doing and tamper the soiled around it so that its solid and the heat won't dry the roots in the summer time and yes you need to water them in the beginning and people think that mulch is a good thing for vines our plants but it's a mold and disease problem if you can't treat it
Good tips. Thank you. We trimmed one batch so we’ll have to wait and see what happens.
I had a client who always put banana peels in the hole when planting her roses. She had amazing roses bushes.
I heard about that too. Often wondered what the magic ingredient was😊
suggestion....grab a container and fill it up with coarse sand, do holes on the bottom and place landscape on the bottom so the sand would not wash out....then plant the dormant grape plants and water them.... do not over water the plants, place the container on semi shade area (more shade than sun) and allow the plants to grow new roots...then transplant them after a month or so. put plenty of compost on the hole, some worm compost and cover the hole....what happen with the plants that die is that they were not ready and did not support the transplant shock....plus u do not have any idea how long they were dig out..and with out water.
Great work you’re doing on the land! You are so involved, dedicated and meticulous. Loved watching you clean the “muro”, stone wall.
Where do you get the cardboard from?
You both seem very happy people living and working on the land!
We enjoy watching your videos!
🌷Sam and Pedro 🇨🇦
We go to a local agricultural machinery shop and stop by the trash for cardboard. 😊
I just love what you both are doing. Love the property so much. It has come along way from hard working couple. God Bless you both. 💖 Can hardly hear you ....
Thank you. We checked the sound on several devices and it’s fine with us. We do our best. 😊
You can also put limestone rocks around the bases of the vines. The sun will heat up the rocks and keep the roots warm on the cold nights. Roots don't like the cold! 😉😉😉
That's a great idea! Thanks 😊
@@NearbyVeggies I found out that from a brilliant film starring Russell Crowe, called: A good year !
Must look out for that film. 👍
I’m in Portugal now! (Nazaré to be precise) - it’s absolutely splendid but the chilly breeze has lulled me into a false sense of security ie I’ve been outside a lot, and my pale white British face is getting sunburnt.
Keep a hat on. 😊
Don't know if it will work for you in your area but it works for me in the USA South! Rather than cardboard, which requires more water to wet, I use several layers of newspaper, wet and follow the same procedure as you to plant things above ground without digging. I do so wish you guys luck!
Newspaper works. We get lots of cardboard but rarely see an old newspaper. 😊👍
Love your videos, you make hard work seem like such fun. Take care, Poo
Thank you 😊
A good advice is to put the plants into a waterbucket at least 2 hours or over night before planting and water the hole so that they have a good start... keep on positiv..with best regards
Great advice We did give them a soak for a couple of hours. 👍
Anazing how energetic and perseverant they are on keep on working in spite of their age. I would imagine they are younger than me as i am seventy. We were looking for a farm near a town in Chile my contra and they offer us one on the feet ofthe pre andean mountains with water comino out of the rock but it we have to take a bus tothe Village. The farm did have fruits and trees and a plantation of trees almonds. It was beautiful to see the almonds tree with flowers in winter. I did not want get involve with producing to sell and i thought what are we going to do with all that. At the end we bought and old house in great condition in the Village with 10 rooms but now we have enough with this and we are going to move to bangalow i hope with a small garden . Is ever so dry and sunny here for us.
We’re a bit younger 🥰 Thanks for sharing your lovely story.
Perhaps you should have soaked the new vines before planting them for a least 3hrs.More effective than watering after planting
We soaked them for a couple of hours before planting. 👍
Soak the vine stock in water before you plant them 35 / 45 minutes clear ground around the vine area or use a 6" collar to suppress weeds , and grasses this should help you if you have a little mulch place under the vine stock with a little soil between both .try to plant to the depth as they were growing before they were removed water in very well that wall will keep drying out your ground fast this site is not ideal sorry try to cut just above a bud if you are going to shorten the root stock i also think your mulch is to fresh to be of benefit you need well rotted mulch
Thanks for the tips, David. The vines are traditionally grown on the edge of terraces here. Helps with air movement. It’s all learning for sure. 👍
@@NearbyVeggies 👍
Looking amazing - going forward will you hold gardening workshops on your land ? And will you have not sure what you would call them over there - here they are called woofers - people come stay for free work for you say like 4 hours a day ? Kathy 🌺
No plans for that at the moment but you never know what the future holds. 😊
Apart from beautifying, placing roses close to vines is an early warning system for detecting fungal problems near your vines. The roses will have symptoms first.
I hope your new vines are a success. I took some cuttings, they grew! They needed more water than I expected, or would expect, but once they grew, I understood why. The roots were far deeper and larger than my first try.
What grapes? White eating variety.
We hope so too. Well done with your cuttings. 😊👍
An idea is to put the roots in water before planting.
We soaked them for a couple of hours. 👍
Some of the top French “vintage” vineyards are less than 2 hectares
Good to know. Thank you 😊
Roseiras são boas para plantar junto das vinhas. Afastam as pragas
Perfeito 👌
Next time u have bare root, soak in bucket of water. Water hole first. Grapevines are like roses. Your climate is soo hot. But I love what u r doing!
The vines had been soaking and they're doing reasonablly well now. Roses too.
You need to water new grapevines every week for the first 2 years.
Thank you. Hopefully we’ll have enough water this year. 😊
👍 Roses are typically used as an early warning system because they catch the same pests and deceases as the vines. When the roses shows any signs of anything it's time for counter measures.
I drove past a vineyard yesterday that had roses at the end of every row. Yes, a great indicator plant. 👍😊
Meus queridos amigos estou completamente encantada com os progressos da quinta está a ficar maravilhoso . Dou os parabens graças ao muito trabalho que têm feito. Muito obrigado por nos mostrar tudo eu nao perco nada. God bless you a lot 🦆🦆🦋🦋🕊🕊🐔🐔🐓❤

Try some coconut tree too
They won’t be happy here. Too cold in winter. 😊
Oh sorry to hear they did not survive... I wonder why? It look like nice sandy soil???
But everything else look great! The fencing the terraces...
Congrats.
I wonder what people were doing mulchers and weed cutters existed. LOL
Sheep, donkeys, goats and ox in the past. 😊. We didn’t have enough water for everything last year which is probably why they died. We had to prioritise and chose to water the young trees.
Good effort with your wall Mermaid, looks great. I hope you have better luck with your vines this time. How long with it take to produce grapes? Well done "Team Veggie" 🤠🤠
Maybe 5 years, Jay Dee. And we’re thinking we might try a rose wine 🤠🤠
I wish you the best of luck with the new vines! However, I do agree with another comment that your wood chips are very green. While I have not tried it, my gardening „library“ recommends using some natural fertilizer to replace the nitrogen taken up by the composting of the new chips. (does that explanation make sense?)
Thanks for the tips!
Thanks for your videos
I want to buy a house with land in Portugal
I love green nature
Thank you and good luck
Take a plastic bottle(2 liters) and cut the down part and put it on top of the roses, will help.
Thanks for the tip.
another last tip....wet the carton before u place it over the sides of plants and first wet the soil pretty good,...then place wet carton over and then some mulch....carton won't take water so easy at the beginning (when dry is even harder..) so u think your plant is getting water but it is not the case...so implementing those changes gives plants water to survive while the carton :"learn" to take the water...and not to repel it.
That’s true. We had plenty of rain and they’re all nice and damp now. 😊
Put your rose cuttings into a potato this will help them root faster
I’ll try that. Thanks 😊
Agua ardente !!!!, do I remember as a child !!!!! I just wanted water, plain H2 O but by mistake I drank agua ardente. Oh my God I thought I was going to die, never again, even to this day, although my Canadian son in law likes it, is not for me even at my age. It sure is burning water.
Oh the lessons we learn by mistake are the best 😂
what a lovely land...!!! one question ...did you get any profit from your land??? are you planing to get profit of your wines??? is it possible to survive in Portugal from your vines and olives??? thank you ...
We certainly don’t have enough to sell on this size of farm. 👍
@@NearbyVeggies thank you....!

Ok I am near Fornos which is N.E. of you. A bit warmer there in winter. If you are stuck and need answers to anything, just ask and will advice all I can as am a pro from U.K. with many years experience.
Thank you, Robert
Do you not need a license to make wine?
Not for our personal use. 👍😊
Before you go off spending 1000s on a tractor, how about putting some wood chip and gravel on the steepest bits of the hill ?
We’re still at the thinking stage. 👍
@@NearbyVeggies Cool. You guys are doing an amazing job, getting a wonderfully diverse small holding up an running ( when many others just talk a good eco game ) but it seems to me a mini tractor, on your terraces, could be a bit sketchy and don't even think about a quad bike
It’s fine to use a tractor on all but one terrace and you’re right, we wouldn’t even think about a quad bike. 😊

Queremos vinho tinto 🍷😊

Don't buy your vines or fruit trees from the market as some are very poor quality. Go to a good garden shop. I don't know where you are but there's is a very good shop in Mangualde on the main St to the right of the town center and his supplier knows how to grow his trees and grapes here take 2 years before they fruit, unlike in U.K. where I grow grapes and had good yields in the first year, don't ask why as no sure.
We are in the Coimbra district. We buy from many different sources including specialist growers 👍
