We had dreams and visions of what we wanted, but the reality was different.
Two years ago, we moved to Portugal.

Hi Dermot, goodness gracious me, we're not that tough! You must have missed it. We have said in a couple of our videos that we live in a rental house nearby. Check out 'Best of the summer harvest', it's near the end. We've filmed several scenes from the rental house too: Dan doing tomatoes. Me editing in the wildlife video (behind the scenes) and 'A gift that changes...'
We are looking forward to being able to move in, but for now, we'll have to wait. We're delighted you're enjoying the channel.

😂😊Hubby and I could have made this video! Our years' long search covered all of the UK until we switched to my home country of Australia. We got very, very good at combining all of the information from every online source imagineable to shortlist places to view, though nothing took the place of actually standing on the ground. We are 3 and a bit years in now, and loving our choice. Thanks for sharing your stories -- entertaining enough that I allow the ads to run their full time! ;-) Hoping those few cents helps!

Try some thornless blackberries, they can surround your property with brambles and make it more difficult for deer to raid your garden. They make fantastic marmalade, preserves and fillings for pies and cakes you can make in the winter. I don't know if blueberries will work, they need sandy soil conditions. Apricots will also grow well in Portugal and with the recent heat waves possibly figs. Its nice to see that you are not total isolationists, community is important is some areas, but more so in some places than others. Have you considered a bird bath to help feathered friends during the drought?

I think you hit the sweet spot with your property. Not too big, not too small. Mature trees which saves years in growing young fruit trees. A fantastic view! Quiet location. And close enough to a village to walk to. Many people forget how important it is to have amenities close by. Yes, we need people even if it is only once in a while. Cheers.

Always look forward to Saturdays to see what you've posted and this week is no exception. Thank you for making this particular vlog. You've answered so many questions here that I'd been wondering about.
It looks like you found the ideal property and only compromised everso slightly on your wish list - but the house renovation will come with time (and what an amazing house it is)! You've also given me plenty to think about in terms of my own criteria and made me realise that a house with a view is essential!

Wise words on taking a while to revise and alter your priorities to suit YOUR needs. It would be nothing short of a tragedy to throw your life's budget at the perfect house next to a noisy road/ industrial fumes/land liable to flood or fires. Or spend years and all savings completely doing up a wreck with a view but too remote from medical care or basic shops.

Love your channel, we are in the early stages of our journey, we completed the purchase of our Portugal property in November '22, it is early February '23 and we are at the end of our first couple of weeks sleeping at our Portuguese property, we have so much to learn, some of it we will learn from you and other RUclipsrs, not least the good couple at Casa Creativa, Gerardus and Niluka, who are close to where we have chosen to settle.

Anyway, I flip houses in the US. These stone houses are a whole different world! How well do you guys speak Portugese?

Just wondering how can you check that there is no Eucalyptus plantation around?
We drove around the area to see what around and searched satellite maps to see what the wider area looked like. There are eucalyptus plots but not hectare upon hectare. It’s mostly small farms here too so quite diverse in what’s growing. We’re happy to have plenty of native forest.

There are indeed big loud barking dogs and small yapping ones too. Guardian dogs bark when perceived dangers approach.
Dogs are usually enclosed within the boundaries of properties. You would have to check for yourself as each location is different. 👍

Im curious, how did the brexit thing pan out for you to get settled status there, i moved to france way back in 2003 so automatically qualified, but 20 years on ad portugal is looking interesting but i dont know how it would now work for me to move there from france as a brit, any info appreciated
Although, Dan is English, Meraid is Irish so we have full freedom of movement in the EU and those restrictions don't apply to us.
