Typhus, also known as "Typhus the Traveller" and the "Herald of Nurgle," originally the Space Marine named Calas Typhon of the world of Barbarus, is the Death Guard Lord of the Death Guard Traitor Legion's 1st Plague Company, and the host of the terrible plague known as the Destroyer Hive. He is a Champion of Nurgle, a Death Guard Sorcerer and the former first captain of the Death Guard Legion. Typhus is also the most feared of all Chaos Lords to command one of the legendary Plague Fleets.
That Typhus has been truly blessed by Nurgle is indisputable. When the Death Guard were adrift in the Warp during the Horus Heresy, dying from the Destroyer Plague, Calas Typhon, First Captain of the XIV Legion, absorbed the full power of the disease, becoming a vessel for this ultimate corruption. Swelling in size, his skin and armour bonded. Great pestilential funnels grew from his body, spewing forth a miasma of destruction. Calas Typhon has been transformed into Typhus, Host of the Destroyer Hive.

In the novel “The Lords of Silence” it actually talks about how the death guard feel about Morty and Typhus. It essentially boils down to the older members are extremely loyal to Mortarion whereas the newer members flock to Typhus
Makes sense. Typhus screwed all of them over for his own ambition. Mortarion, for all is shortcomings and bitterness, never sold out his sons. The whole reason he gave in to Nurgle was to save them. Typhus would never do that.

To touch on DK's question about if members of the Death Guard follow/like Typhus or Mortarian more, that is brought up in the DG book "The Lords of Silence".
The main character is a DG captain from the great crusade. Although he does respect Typhus as one of Nurgles favored, he & others from that time do still remember that he was the one who drove them into Nurgles embrace and hates him for that.
Yeah it seems like a lot of the Death Guard respect Morty outside of Typhus. It also seems like Typhus knows he's required to fall in line when he's required to, even if he doesn't respect Morty.
The art of DK licking his own nose is probably the single highest-mileage piece of art ever created for this series. Like damn, sometimes the poor guy's racing to the bottom of the IQ chart against a Corpus crewman who thinks a plinx will do anything to the rapidly approaching Tenno.
Fun Fact : Mortarian has his father's soul bound to a torture device of his own design which constantly destroys and restores its energy, causing unknowable amounts of despair, pain and more; a symbolic attempt at finishing what Big E stole from him. Only Mortarian has done this so much that it's boring. Now, he basically does it to brood

@@_NIKOS9_NIKOS this was before Ultramar Plague wars. Tau made a warp Wormhole which allows to travel anywhere. It's like Tau made a pseudo webway.
Tau settled on an outpost which is very close to the Galactic center and also close to Baal system, homeworld of Blood Angels. Although it was an accident, Tau can make Warpholes to travel anywhere. Which is good for them. The first was Startide Nexus

But with this tech figured out, Tau can make new wormholes so that they can take their fleet from one point to other. Which is why you can see in coming years, they are creating a largest fleet ever for 6th sphere of expansion
I see typhus as Erebus’ right hand man for the chaos embracing, especially after reading Luther’s book. He’s pretty interesting and him back talking morty is always really funny
Id say the difference is that typhus can't 1v1 mortarion, while Luther was able to 1v1 the lion on caliban for a while which is absolutely nuts. Even sigismund couldn't do that successfully when fighting fulgrim. Not trashing siggy he's my favorite marine for what he did to abaddon the armless. Honestly with his power up they should have done more with Luther instead of leaving him in caliban for the crusade and heresy.

Fun fact about the Sosters of Silence: they took his shoulder pad (which was blasted off) and revere it as a sacred relic. To this day, they pay reverence to Typhon, without knowing the cruel truth.

I kinda admire Typhus' no fucks attitude towards his primarch. After the Rift opening, he wanted to run around the greater Imperium causing mayhem: Morty wanted to get involved with Ultramar instead.
Typhus, Mortarion, and Ku'gath (great unclean one) were in a conference call once and it was mostly Typhus and Mortarion snipping at one another while Ku'gath was just kinda there.

For the Istvaan V Legions, it's easy: -Traitorous from the start: Horus and his Sons and the 3 mono god legion (the Thousand Sons haven't turned yet)
-Loyalists: Raven Guard, Salamenders and Iron Hands (the Shattered Legions).
-Traitorous under the guise of loyalty: the 4 undivided legions.
I think its worth mentioning that mortarion turning traitor and falling to chaos are two very different moments with very different reasons. As you mentioned mortarion turned traitor because of the whole tyrant thing but he fell to chaos because he was forced to the decision by typhus to let his legion suffer or turn to chaos. Although its a bit inconsistent Mortarion does seem to care a lot for the death guard who he rallied and spent many years trying to save on barbarus.
Edit: Oh and correct me if I'm wrong but I think most of the death guard were willing to suffer but Mortarion "saved" them.
That is a common avenue for many chaos worshippers, first they turn against the Imperium with the best of intentions or at least genuine disgust towards its many flaws, only afterwards they consciously turn to chaos. Often they are manipulated by chaos from the beginning, sometimes chaos only comes into play when they are already traitors.
And Mortarion dooming his still loyal sons by commiting treason to save them is just absolutely a chaos thing.
No, his sons wanted him to kill them, and when he tried to do so they would not die. The only thing that they were able to say to him after that were unintelligible gurgles. After the event most of the death guard still respect mortarion, because even after all the suffering the experience, it’s still better than living on barbarus

Typhus had a sort of second in command by the name of Ignatius Grulgor who wasn't responding to his hails asking for information on how he killed garro and then typhus decided to go shoot the Eisenstein after the vox officer revealed garro had control of the ship

Most of the Chaos Champions are tragic figures in some way:
-Ahriman followed in his father's footsteps trying to save his legion only to doom it even further, spending the next 10 thousand years trying to reverse his mistake
-Kharn was a really swell guy and decked Erebus that one time before succumbing to the nails
-Even Lucius had a lot of insecurities that he had hidden beneath all that bravado
-And then there's Typhus. The only tragedy there is that Mortarion trusted him
Ever wonder who would be the Nurgle champ if Perturabo had accepted the recruitment offer? I do wish Garro, Sigismund, Corswain, Perturabo, any of the White Scars or Mortarion took the time to separate his head from the rest of him. Even in Death Guard books in the Plague Wars he's scheming against Mortarion. I'd take Vorx as his replacement any day thanks.

To give credit where it's due, Typhus internalized social ostracization and repression for his entire life until Erebus stepped in. It's just that he's living his best unlife now, long after anyone could have helped him right his ship, and potentially patch things up with Mortarion and his legion.

@@samtrue3 Erm, she's very screwed up by the end of the heresy. I believe she's in Echoes of Eternity and when Kharn and Horus are looking at you with pity and contempt you definitely are screwed up.
In talking about the hierarchy of Nurgle it is important to keep in mind that the chaos gods are insane in regards to mortal reality, and that they are complex and intricate in what they value, despair is ultimately what Nurgle is about. The fact that Mortarion lives a life of such absolute despair is a sign that he is vastly more well liked by Nurgle than Typhus. You could sort of see as though the two of them are children, Papa Nurgle gives one of them a lot of stuff and doesn't bother keeping track of their goings on, whereas the other has been set to take over the family business and is held to a high standard by the parent.

If Angron didn't have the nails I imagine he'd actually be a pretty great guy, not only is he deeply empathetic by nature but he greatly cherished personal bonds. He'd probably be just as great a 'dad' as Corvus was.

As far as who's loyal to who- the death guard are one of the most unified chaos factions. Mortarion commands the respect and love of most of the DG, as he freed them from Barbarus. Typhus commands a major semi-splinter faction, and who still submit to Mortarion most of the time as their goals align. Lords of Silence really puts this on display, give it a read
I love the conflict between Typhus and Mortarion. Typhus is more favoured by the Grandfather because he really believes in Nurgle while Morty simply "knows" but doesn't really believe in Nurgle's teachings while still being a Demon Primarch.
