For too long, women have been told to sit down, be quiet and play small.
But no longer!
No more being constrained by the precedents of the past, they are stepping up and stepping out of the shadows.

I live in Trinidad, where year in and year out we talk and talk and talk about the issues plaguing our youth and our men and our women but we never dare do anything and we always find someone else to blame, because actually addressing the issues means upsetting the balance of power that favors the rich old men, the patriarchy, and religious dogma.
Oh how it sickens me listening to these people complain about the same !@#$ yet never daring to say anything of substance. Nowadays it's the notion of equal rights (not actual equal rights) and transgenderism at the heart of our decades long social issues! Equal rights is an affront to God, don't you know! Yes! We need more God, yes! We took God out of school and that's why the kids are the way they are! Yes! Say no to Comprehensive Sex Education because it's an affront to God, while our vulnerable children continue to become child abuse statistics! Yes!
I didn't make any of that up. I might have paraphrased, but this is literally the trash that comes out of our leaders' mouths here.
No one with the power to change anything, really cares about changing anything, because the status quo benefits them somehow.
Power, Privilege and the Patriarchy! !@#$ all of it!

I will say that I believe our issues all stem from the same core problems. Cultural nuances aside, the ignorance and the bigotry, the privilege, the sexism, the entitlement, the homophobia and transphobia, it's all the same !@#$ just wrapped in a different shade of skin in a different corner of the world.
I've listened to this discussion many times over the years by different people from all walks of life across the world and the rot at the center of it is always the same.
One step at a time, sure, but we need to keep sight of the elephant in the room. We can't take as many centuries as it took for the patriarchy to brainwash us, because every time we make progress we get dragged back twice as far if not more.
America is the prime example of how one step at a time can allow the disease to spread in the shadows, and unfortunately, the nonsense America does affects us all, whether it's foreign policy or emboldening bigots. If nothing else, these past 8 years have shown us who we really are beneath the fake smile and empty gestures.

@HystericalSej I so agree particularly re USA...not a great deal better here in Aus, just more subtle. Your comments have really encouraged me to be much more vocal on this platform...to use my voice in stronger ways. And we do have to find ways to take action...we can't wait another millennium for the patriarchy to die away.
