  • I have lived in Charleston SC for my entire life and I've been hunting for fossil shark teeth since I was a small child. Shark teeth can be found all over the place in the lowcountry so we used to find them when we played in the ditches. My dad used to take my brother and me to hunt for them on the dredge piles, in the sand pits, and any place he heard we could find them. I even remember finding teeth on the playground in middle school. One time when I was a young teenager, my dad took my brother and me shrimping in the Ashley River near the harbor. There used to be a spot between the interstate and West Ashley where lots of people used to go fishing, crabbing, shrimping, etc. We used a drag net - a net extended between two poles that we would drag through the water and my brother and I took turns on one end when my dad was on the other. I would drag the net while my brother played on the beach and vice versa. At the end of my turn, I grabbed a big blue crab out of the net and he pinched my finger so hard it started gushing blood and my dad said I was done in the water for the day because he didn't want my injury to get infected. Like a lot of places, we could find shark teeth at this spot too so I switched gears and started scouring the ground. I was walking near the river bank where there was a small vertical edge and I saw a big U shaped black rock poking out of the edge. I pulled on it and huge blade followed it. I stared at it in shock as I turned over the huge tooth in my hand, still bleeding from the my encounter with the crab. I had never found such a large shark tooth ever. I rushed over to the water and rinsed it off with my good hand. It was majestic, the first megalodon tooth I ever found. I remember it like it was yesterday. It was the fuel that sparked a lifelong obsession with hunting for megalodon teeth. Fast forward a few decades and I'm still out looking for the fossilized teeth of the extinct giant white shark. Today the action is at Sloth Party, the dirt pit where ‪@AncientAdventures‬ and I have been pulling out all kinds of fossils for the past few months. There are a bunch of megalodon teeth at this spot, more than any other I have ever collected. Early on in the hunting here I started keeping a running count of all the megalodon teeth I found at this spot and I ran it up a few digits today! I hope you enjoy the video of the hunt and the recovery of a few more awesome fossils from one of the most awe inspiring predator the earth has ever known!

      its gonna be sweltering hot in no time so hurry unless you're gonna dive, in that case I'd wait a little longer coz the water is still chilly. thanks for watching!

    Never found an angi hunting various places in Fl. Was in some highway construction pits in SW Fl many years ago where the matrix looked just like Sloth P. I don’t remember the folks I hunted with finding any either. Smaller (

      its a sediment age thing. In SW Florida you have late Miocene deposits so angustidens, an oligocene species, were extinct by then. Y'all have some late form chubutensis down there which have a hint of cusps but not like angys. However, if you move up north a little to the limestone outcrops in the Suwanee River you can find auriculatus which have prominent side cusps, even more so than angys because rics evolved into angys. the progression of the giant white shark lineage ends at megalodon where the cusps are completely gone.

      We dig in the Goose Creek, Summerville, Knightsville, Ridgeville general area. We are just collectors though, we don't offer tours but there are lots of people in the area who do that if that's what you're interested in doing. Best of luck to you!

      charleston has some immense meg teeth. there was a 7.5 incher that came from the cooper river, I believe that's one the biggest ever found.

      @@blackriverfossilsI worked on a construction project for 3 1/2yrs at the nuclear power training unit on the Cooper at jbc. We were regularly finding hand sized teeth. You would see guys just jump down in a hole while digging and you already knew why. One guy found what would have been a $30k+ tooth, according to the internet at that time, but he dropped it and broke the corner off. The man literally about cried. I have a big chunk of some sort of petrified bone. Was told a whale rib and someone else said manatee bone. Don't know what it came from but it's cool.

      @@Playswithfire3782 you are very fortunate to have had the opportunity to collect there. nobody gets to hunt on the base and the fossil formation is obviously amazing over there. i feel bad for the guy who dropped the whopper! thanks for sharing your story.

      I'm gonna have to check, i haven't shined the light on the megs. Some of the angys definitely do, that was going to be one of my followup videos after I'm finished posting everything from this site. Other sites from this area have some really cool fluorescent teeth under black light - check out this video ruclips.net/video/px0gXBVVjyo/видео.html

    Hello there I'm planning a trip to the Carolina's just for megalodon teeth hunting. Where are the best places to go for a person that isn't from there.

    • @blackriverfossils
      @blackriverfossils  4 месяца назад

      hi, megalodon teeth can be found in both north and south carolina. im not aware of any tour guides in north carolina but there are a bunch of them in the charleston south carolina area,. best recommendation would be to figure out who you want to go with and then ask them where you should stay in town to be closer to the hunting spot. charleston is a big place.

    • @BoostedSpeedDemon
      @BoostedSpeedDemon 6 месяцев назад

      @@blackriverfossils weird It looked like the blade on one side was kind of short and wavy and the tooth wasn't very symmetrical. Looked like a patho to me but you would know better

    • @blackriverfossils
      @blackriverfossils  6 месяцев назад

      @@BoostedSpeedDemon there is a ding right where the enamel should meet the root and that makes it look strange. Plus its a lateral position so it wouldn't look symmetrical even if it was 100%. those side teeth often have a weird look to them. part of the appeal!

    What kind of permit do you need to go digging for stuff like this?

    • @blackriverfossils
      @blackriverfossils  6 месяцев назад +1

      you need a permit when you are collecting in state waters (ie scuba diving) and you can apply for that from the state. Google SCIAA for more information. You only need permission to collect on private property.
