Joe Dart had a stand alone bass amp, so he did not go through the main board at all and was not recorded. I'm sure it sounded great in the room. This is a pretty common problem when making a recording of the main board in small venues.

Besides the poor mixing of this clinic, the whole interview is such a gem. I love Joe so much, he kind of restored my whole faith in music and bass when I started hearing Vulf like 3 years ago and was having a real hard time personally. What a beautiful human being and the whole Vulf family as well!!!
It's obviously just a direct recording off the mixer output; there was no way to mix it after the fact. In the room, most of the bass sound would have come from his amp, so the front of house mixer didn't really pick up much of it.
Chuck Silva It’s a part of the curriculum and learning process. We are supposed to load this video into PT and mix it properly before watching and enjoying

I'm late to the game but this is an awesome video! thanks for posting. I have so much respect for Joe and what he does. As for the Mix: I've run into this before in small rooms like this, it seems the video guy just pulled a line off the tape out/rec out of the board. they didn't have do a separate mix for the feed, or mix tracks in post. So while I'm sure it sounded great in the room (big bass amp sound, punchy drums, clean full dialogue) they were mixing against stage volume, not for the feed. I've had a lot of good mixes killed by a camera guys..... would have sounded much better to just use a room mic🙃.
Why is the volume so low? I switched tab to watch a video my friend sent me and I forgot to turn it back down. Suffice to say I'm about at the beginning of innovation for I have gone deaf
I think drummers love the perfect note duration thing because of Hi-hat barks. Closing a Hi-hat and stopping a bark at exactly the right time is very statisfying.

Amazing stuff, very insightful, Berkeley's held in high regard for sure. Joe Dart and all his accomplishments I bet would love to have that feather in his cap as well!
As soon as he said “James Jamerson…’ what’s going on ‘“ it all added up for me. I just discovered Vulfpeck like…2 weeks ago 😂 (seriously!) I’m a beginner bass player and when I heard “Wait for the moment” I thought, “MAN! That’s some tasty bass play! Who’s that guy? I want to emulate him! But why does his style sound so familiar and harmonious?”🤔 I spent the next few days listening to that song on repeat, trying to figure out why I gelled with his style. Then it hit me, “It sounds like walking bass!” (Which my teacher has been drilling me on for like the past month) Now I knew why his style reminded me of James Jamerson so much (I had been trying to study Jamerson’s play in WGO just previous to discovering VP). Now I see that Jamerson was a big influence on Joe’s playing.!😄 Back to practice I go
It's something you need to work out between your bass, the drums and yourself, nobody else can teach you timing. You learn this in your shed, or wherever you practice at, I been learning timing for over 20 years, still improving every time I practice, nobody here has perfect timing. Your body is the limitation, how strong of a neck do you have ?. What he means by voice, is you have freedom to express yourself like singing. Voice means freedom of expression, it's a huge milestone for any player who reaches this level. One day you just get hit with this overwhelming happiness, you did something good ?, no that's called Freedom and you made out of that place you were stuck in musically. If you listen to enough stuff, play enough stuff, it might happen slowly over time with bass, this is when learning really begins. It's not going to happen if you lock yourself into a corner musically, open your minds. Joe is speaking but there's no need to listen, I hear him playing already, I know what his mindset is because I play bass. Joe is one of those guys who are really good, a real bassist, he mentions the drummer and all that. Not a fan of solo bassists, or the internet because it's a trap for death. If you like Vulfpeck and this type of music and want to start another band, let's go. If you like popular music and want a band, let's go. Where are the amazing drummers, you know who you are ?. Bands need to form naturally, not like this. I need to look around my area too, for a drummer and a guitarist, there's the Music Exchange I should just hang out there, play bass and see what happens. Just play something good, people will notice a good bass player who has a sense of timing. You don't need the internet to play music, it's not good. People need to be enriched beyond what the internet is physically capable of, 100%. I have already experienced exactly what we're missing socially and I aim to recreate this experience over and over. The good news is we can just pull the plug and get back to making music, as unhinged as that sounds to your digitally based world now. In fact, with all the modern gear and equipment for recording, what are people doing man ?. Why are you not recording your bands, what is with all this solo nonsense ?. Go out and meet other musicians, I'll see you at the Music Exchange.
I met some kid from Korea his only influence was Joe Dart, he didn't really sound like him, but he was groove based. I told him all about Joe's influences, he had no idea. Joe, tell us more about your influences, I read you played for Jazz band in HS ?. You are one of the only bassists out there that's still able to make people dance and loosen up, how did this happen ?. These are good questions for Joe, his style is no secret guys. If you ask him why he's so good on bass, he's got no answer because it's called talent. He mentioned himself as a baby, grooving around. There's no life hack for bass, it's ALL about neck twerking, I like Joe more now because of his neck explanation, right-on.

Working musician here. Live shows can be extremely difficult. That said, a bass amp, a drum kit, couple vocal mics is not complex. It's not difficult to check signal levels before pressing record. I don't see anyone is complaining about the knowledge.
