One thing I really like about the show is we get to see Robin become a better leader through the Titans. He was already good at strategy and working with people but we got see him become better through out the show, oddly enough through letting go of some of what Batman taught him.
His mistakes as a leader or as superhero like keeping secrets from his team or not allowing himself to take a break or have a personal life where things that Batman-whether directly or not-definitely taught him. But by letting go of those ideas he was able to become a better leader and a better man. He even admits as such in the episode "Revved Up" that he used to think that secrets from his friends where necessary but not anymore.
I'm not trying to say that Batman was a bad mentor, far from it, but he wants the Robins to be better than him and becoming a Titan is how Dick became a better leader than Batman could ever hope to be.

Every character on the show had nice arc and growing moment, in particular Raven and Beast Boy got some really cool moments, such as Raven opening up and become more trusting of others, Beast Boy going from goofy kid to more mature guy (especially after his arc with Terra), and Robin had that nice episode where he had to let things go after Deathstroke seemingly comes back to life in S3. Not to mention that dude went to Hell to save Raven (s4 during Trigon arc).
This is what I loved about the show, I was already in my teen years when it aired, so i was mature enough to pick up on more mature themes, but it was still colorful and goofy that you could enjoy it if you were just a kid.

Robin wasn't just trained by Batman, he was also introduced to fighting and acrobatics at a very young age as in Dick Grayson's original backstory, written by Bill Finger, he is raised in the circus with the acrobatic trio The Flying Graysons, consisting of him, his mother and father. So even before meeting batman he had tremendous talent, batman just enhanced it.

Some people, people more used to the fanon depiction of Dick who see him as a "ray of sunshine", think TTA Robin is out of character for DG, but they actually couldn't be more wrong. Dick has always been the more sober/serious one when it came to the Teen Titans, Titans, Outsiders etc. etc... and even then he's been a more grounded character in his other books and solos, especially in the 80's/90's. It's only recent years and this overwhelming fandom woobification (which also seems to dumb him down/dull his skills) that has led to this misrepresentation of his character that has brought us to the Nightwing in the Harley Quinn and Poison Ivy show, a whiny idiot with daddy issues. And I know that show makes fun of everyone, but it's still so close to the fanon version of Dick that it's just kinda sad... great video!

I see it as a 'Spock on the Enterprise' situation. Only the loose cannons of Vulcan culture find themselves accommodating enough to be able to work with a mainly human crew, but at of the day they're still Vulcans. Dick Grayson can be both the purest member of the Batman universe, and also the most serious member of the Teen Titans. Anyone able to crack jokes around Bruce and Damien Wayne will look like the life of a party, and anyone who demands discipline and work around Starfire, Beat Boy, and Cyborg is going to look like a tight ass. Grayson's path is finding a way to navigate those two approaches, and come into his own.

And that is why writers should never 100% listen to fanbases when it comes to writing characters; when you let your spectators dictate the way you should handle your writing (especially the manic ones who tend to flanderize or woobifie characters for the sake of personal gratification, AKA the Tumblr/Twitter crowd), you're bound to see how your story/show comes crumbling down like a stack of Jenga pieces, and your characters' rep. and actual personality ruined. Example: RWBY.
In the case of the Harley Quinn and Poison Ivy show, it was inevitable that Dick would be portrayed like that, cause that show is aimed at the exact same crowd who turns him into a joke in their drawings and such. They don't care about actual character accuracy or anything like that, they just want to self-insert into the characters and feel like everything revolves around them as a (desperate) means of validation.

I know this is over a year old, but I have to say my piece. Teen Titans, I grew up on, it's one of my favorite childhood shows when we had cable. When I was a kid, I wasn't too into superheroes, so Batman wasn't really known to me. I knew of him, but I never watched shows or movies that had Batman because he didn't interest me. The Teen Titans however, it caught my interest and I didn't even know there were other robins because I thought it was just this Robin. I didn't even know he had any other name than Robin until I tried looking into it for a story idea I'm writing, I like writing fanfics. All I cared about was this character and this character only, but learning more about him, everything, it made me love his character that much more.

This show as my first time really getting into the superhero space (along side JL Unlimited, I was just a bit too young to catch the BMtAS stuff on air) and when looking back after learning more about everything, I absolutely adore the omnipresent "teen" aspect of this series. The TT time of Dick's life was when he was the most rebellious and "typical teen" like as a character. He was branching out from The Bat, learning to be more "independent" (yeah he's got a team, but no seasoned heroes or Bruce's bank account), improving his leadership skills, slowly becoming Nightwing, and I think this show portrays that phenomenally. Personally, I do like the YJ Dick more as a whole, but speaking honestly, he's also just a more "complete" version of the character over all - the point of the TT version to me was to show the character in this specific time period and space and I think they absolutely nailed it. They combined teen angst and impulsivity really well with the core aspects of the Batfam's Oldest Son (still a detective-crime-fighter trained by Batman, but not as dark) , isolated him (purely through writing) from any help outside his team (or other teens), and really showed him coming into his own during this time.

I would love for the Batman (2004) and Teen titans (2003) to be the same Robin/Nightwing versions, that’d cement that version being the #1 best and greatest spot-on Dick Grayson to me. I still love DCAMU’s characterization but those movies truly just disrespected him the best they could… oof…

I love the Teen Titans version. Robin in this show feels more competent than Batman in a way. Like he’s even more focused on preparedness and getting the job done. And this is inline with the fact that Batman sees him as his predecessor.

I absolutely agree that this version of Robin was the best portrayed. However, not enough people talk about how a lot of his key defining traits were ripped straight from Tim Drake like his bo staff use, detective skills, and affinity for gadgets. As a result, Tim Drake was often portrayed as the kid brother figure instead of the prodigy who had the potential to out sleuth Batman
Dick was meant to represent what Batman would have been like if he put more energy towards his emotional intelligence and leadership skills. They definitely got that part right in his portrayals in Teen Titans and Young Justice.

I just watched some TT but you're making me want to go back and do it again lol.
Teen Titans made a great decision by not including the big name adult superheroes. Like you said, it allows the kids to shine in their own right and resolve their own issues. It heightens the stakes, provides more opportunity for character growth, and allows for more interesting plots. I heard they did it to make them look like more confident role models for kids. But it was a great narrative choice as well, and it made Teen Titans more iconic. Gave some of the lesser known Titans (especially in season 5) more time to shine too.

I’m actually surprised you don’t have the BTAS version up there along with YJ and TT. I kind of find it hard to disagree with the TT version being the best though because I absolutely loved that cartoon growing up and Robin was, in fact, my favorite character. But BTAS was one of the closest and best interpretations imo. Right up there with TT. Dick wasn’t the leader of the Team as Robin in YJ though (except for 3 episodes/missions and one of them was a dream), that was Aqualad. But then in season 2 he was as Nightwing. Oh and another thing you didn’t mention in the video about how he’s flawed is the part about how he created the Red X moniker but didn’t fill his team in not to mention he was fighting them. And then we see the character development from that as Robin learns to trust his team more and basically doesn’t do anything else without them except for what he needed to do himself. He was a very balanced character and, yea, I agree that he is the best version of the character we’ve seen so far.

TT Robin is great for all of those reasons you gave but I think I slightly prefer YJ Robin however only because seeing his growth into Nightwing in later seasons. The not bringing Batman into TT also has a different element to it too, when Batman is present you do have a comparison between the two and his differences show and their relationship (that scene of them playing basketball I thought was great).
YJ explored have more of his psyche too and his growth was far more visible. (Him wanting to lead to the team more than anything and then him opening up how he expected to become Batman but realizing that he isn’t Bruce, he isn’t the same as him and wants different things) Now TT also had some of this growth but it was more subtitle until the movie Trouble in Tokyo.
But in my mind they’re both great, neither is bad, just personal taste thing.

    • @ashesGeek
      @ashesGeek 6 месяцев назад

Teen Titans didn't bring Batman into the show because they wanted to restrain Robin's and Titans story from the rest of DC cast. After all, Dick has finally got his own team and must prove himself as worthy leader, Batman and Bat-family would've been just a third wheel.
However, Batman did show up in Teen Titans 2003 comics which were kind of the finale after "Trouble in Tokyo" and unofficial season 6. When Robin finally let his emotions outside he finally separated his hero and teen life allowing himself to openly date with Starfire. Bruce was watching the whole thing from another building, which is creepy for adult man spying on 2 teens making out, but he finally accepted Robin grew up and can stand up for himself and his friends

I think what i like a lot about Teen Titans Robin is that it feels like the time he spends leading the team is crucial to his development into the wholistic man that he is when he becomes Nightwing.
In teen titans, you can see how he was raised by batman, and still had batmans cold and obsessive nature. But he had a soft spot for the team, especially starfire, and that taught him to be more than just a hero. It makes his character as nightwing in later iterations more believable and feel real. That hes an even greater role model and even father figure for damian wayne.

I loved teen titans robin. And he is my favorite robin. However he's not my favorite version of Dick Grayson. Dick grayson even in his early years as Robin made quips and jokes and felt alot like spider-man without powers. While in the teen titans show they gave him alot of dick grayson aspects they made him way too serious. That's why i like young justice season 1 Dick the most he makes jokes yet he can still have his serious moments. His friendship with Wally and not wanting to be Batman but wanting to prove himself to batman is what made me like the character. And from young justice season 2 they just made him a batman clone. I still liked him but the big problem is that in the teen titans show and even in S2 and the season above of young justice make him feel like a younger batman in a diffrent costume. They never felt like dick grayson to me. They felt more like Tim Drake. Even though Tim was a completely diffrent character. The best animated version of Dick Grayson's robin is young justice S1. And the best version of Dick Grayson Nightwing was shown in the DCAMU not in terms of fighting and everything else but more in terms of personality. But that's mostly my opinion. And also orignally in the OG comics the entire reason he started the TT and later became nightwing was because he and batman ended on bad terms. They still had mutual respect and later they made things right again. While i don't like the ending on bad terms thing i do think it could've been a good plot point to start the teen titans. However i do like that teen titans and young justice still made them have a good releationship.

TT has a great robin and I love everything they do with the character, expecially with how competent he's shown alongside his super powered friends. However I wouldn't say he's my favorite because I think Dick Grayson needs a little more levity. Not that Dick is a goofball, I absolutely like making him more serious to show how Bruce has raised him, but robin is supposed to be the ray of sunshine to counter Batman's darkness.
The animated shows have all done a pretty good job with dick with one exception. The Batman(2004) and BTAS both nail the Batman and Robin dynamic with the former being more energetic while the latter is more seasoned. Young Justice has a pretty amazing dick Grayson with him being competent yet flawed and so much fun to watch, he's cocky and arrogant yet smart and calculating and is in my opinion the best robin to date.
I'd say the DCAMU is the only one that kidna drops the ball and I still love this dick Grayson. He's now Nightwing and I love him in Judas Contract where he's depicted similar to his young justice counterpart. Also Dick x Kory is so much more interesting than him with Barbara and I will die on this hill. The only problem with this depiction is how much his ass gets handed to him.
So the perfect robin would have the Teen Titans leadership, BTAS's dynamic duo, the Batman's energy, young justices character writing, and DCAMU's maturity. The perfect dick Grayson is inspiring and compassionate but can get caught up in his own head. A robin that can lead a team with his intellect and comradery while still being an anchor for Batman to keep him grounded in his goal. Dick Grayson is the perfect combination of Batman and Superman.

This Robin does shit like hang upside down in the dark to make a dramatic entrance when the bad guy flips on the light😂 He really is actually a very believable version of Robin all things considered because he’s almost too mature for his age because he never had a normal childhood with Bruce; like the things he has seen and done and had on his shoulders before have given him the sense of responsibility that Batman would have instilled in him, meaning, a little bit more self-blame than is purely healthy. But this Robin is obviously very recently split from Bruce and is on bad terms. Which is exactly how it happened in the comics. Their split was ugly and they didn’t talk for over a year. Jason’s entire tenure as Robin came and went without Dick talking to Bruce. The canonical rift between them was extreme and almost permanent. Tim was the one that basically forced them to make nice with one another, and by that time Dick was obviously going by Nightwing and had long since abandoned his title as Boy Wonder.
You excluded Batman Brave and The Bold and I think that was the right choice. Does Robin even count as a true character in that show? He gets what, two appearances as Robin and one as Nightwing? Idk. But he’s just not….really a full-fleshed out Robin in that show.

Young Justice Dick Grayson >> Teen Titans Dick Grayson
I Love both, both shows are the best version of him, but as a Comic Reader and Fan for years. YJ is the most close to his comic counterpart imo.
Or more so, I think I agree with someone in some other video I watched, TT is the Best Robin but YJ is the best Dick Grayson what means Best Nightwing since Nightwing is Dick's best self.

I'd say Teen Titans 2003 series creators never really focused too much on Titans real identities, all of that was more for reference use. They needed to make their heroes personas more obvious for kids, but at the same time these characters grew and changed just like their audience.
I found it really strange people wanted to know about villians backstories, have bigger scales than just saving Jump City when Teen Titans is completely different from shows like BTAS or Justice League Unlimited. All the threats serve as a tool to cover Titans personal and team conflicts. Having a complex 6-parter story wouldn't just give them air to expand on their personalities and acceptance of their limits and insecurities. And villians like Joker or Starro weren't needed at all.

I thought young justice’s Robin was Tim Drake? Honestly I was under the impression this whole time that the original Teen Titans Robin was Tim as well.

The original Young Justice Robin in the first season is Dick Grayson like the Teen Titans Robin they both become Nightwing in the future. But from season 2 onwards the Young Justice Robin is Tim Drake, Jason Todd is Robin sometime during the time skip between seasons 1 and 2.

Nah. It's dick grayson. You see a flashback of his parents falling off the trapeze when raven tries to enter his mind and look through his eyes

Nope! It was Dick Grayson, this robin became Nightwing in the future and mentioned things like the flying Grayson in his origin. I can definitely see why you would think that though
