One time during a visit to Cittaviveka monastery in the UK, a senior monk gave a dhamma talk, and during the talk it started raining. The monk stopped talking and told us to just listen to the rain.....I think that was the first time in my life that I 'heard' rain properly. The sound literally filled the meditation hall, it was so beautiful. This music brought that memory back, thank you CalmDownTizak
I imagine a very old but wise man meditating, sitting quietly in his small, simple hut that sits along a waterway, long after the sun has set, listening to every raindrop and all together the power of the storm though his mind is distant from his ears, and he can see out into the darkness of the night even though his eyes lay closed...
"There is something to be learned from a rainstorm. When meeting with a sudden shower, you try not to get wet and run quickly along the road. But doing such things as passing under the eaves of houses, you still get wet. When you are resolved from the beginning, you will not be perplexed, though you will still get the same soaking. This understanding extends to everything." - Yamamoto Tsunetomo.
This piece of music is "Honshirabe 本調" "Honshirabe" literally means "basic melody". The technical and mental approaches to this piece represent the basic building blocks of shakuhachi honkyoku. It is said that some monks played this song their entire lives as part of a Buddhist training aimed at squeezing everything possible out of it and themselves. This is such a relaxing sound, just close your eyes and listen! And now think that you are in Japan. If you ever get the chance to go there do it, as you will love it there as I did on my visits. Thank you for posting this nice music. I must now get in out of the rain.
Wow. Meditating on this music really does give you that eerie feeling - like a Samurai warrior meditating and calming himself the night before the final fight. Amazing. Thanks for uploading. Wish it could be longer.
it's amazing how this music, old japanese music with flute just makes me so much better when i feel tense or depressed, it's like a life saver...i wish i could live in japan for some time and learn all about their culture and music...peace and quiet...harmony...
Hey guys. I have been listening to this for the past year or so. I just listen when I am working on homework or just simply want to sleep ya know. It calms me down from all if the stress and i hope it does for you guys
I imagine sitting on a japanese porch overlooking a small formal garden. A gentle stream of water flows down and around small protrusions of rock. Koi are lazily swimming searching for food to nibble on. The rain chains are slowly tinkling with the water flowing through them, to reach the garden below. Beautiful music. thank you.
I do this while doing the nine cutting fingers of ninjutsu. it's very relaxing and helps me think. it helps relieve the stress and reset myself in my mind and my body.
I love this video. It's SO relaxing ... I listen to it when I go to sleep, and it really has helped me with my imsomnia problem. Thanks for such wonderful music.
You have a good imagination,Your type of detail shows you are a person of such wise and calming stature. Imagine YOU are the samurai, and give yourself lots of poise and balance.
Makes me feel like i want to learn how to play the flute, and each time it rains sit under the gizibo in my back garden and let everyone embrace the sounds of relaxation.
I imagine this played while some Japanese people meditate, but instead of having the rain improvised, they do it on a rainy day. Beautiful, I may as well learn how to meditate, this is what I will be listening to. :D
I hear this and an image comes up to my mind. An image of a samurai at his dojo practice his moves along this music to maintain balance and harmony at his moves in battle.
This is cold reading! The context is very important because we meet in a calm and relaxing (virtual) place so it's kind of easy to deduce that you're calm or searshing for inner peace...
such a beautiful melody, reminds me of a samurai comeing home from war in a down pour , badly hurt, but still living. just barely holding on. i know he'll find peace in the end.
As a Japanese person , I think this song has something deep to soothe and warms . This song purifies music of melancholy and nostalgia and pensive . 🍎 From effulgent Tokyo in profound Japan in severe winter What national are you watching this video ?
What I imagine is a small army of Tokugawa samurai resting at a camp after battle. the combination of the storm and the flute calms the wounded, turning their pain into a feeling of relaxation.
Profound. I recently purchased a Shakuhachi Yuu, because I so want to be able to play this remarkably stirring instrument. I'm 56, so maybe by the time I'm 80, I'll be half way decent. It is a path well worth taking.
This recording is trance inducing. I snapped out of it to write THANK YOU. I've been needing something to remove me from my physical self. . . this turned out to be the thing. I'm going to replay it as soon as I post this.
I am sitting next to an open window, reading and listning to this, noting that the mood is so strong I can actually smell the wet leaves..... and then rain drops hit my arm.... Actual rain is coming down outside and I didn't notice the difference. :)
I imagine a man inside a small hut-like dojo, meditating there with pure piece, staying there for the time lapse between the beginning of the rain to fall and it's end, with piece in mind. very relaxing, very relaxing indeed.
Hmmm, since we are all imagining...I imagine a beautiful almost ethereal geisha dancing gracefully yet with sad movements in a tea house during a storm with the doors open to the deck. With a pale light just barely making it into the room, making it calm, but solemn.
I must say, I LOVEEEEEEEEEE JAPAN AND KOREA I'M LIKE THE BIGGEST FAN of their songs, music, traditional dances, traditional clothes... I can't say enough....I Just Love you people!! Asians are just different......!! Really nice people...
Alot of people can imagine anything as of battle with this type of calming music ❤️🖤🌹 So great to read these makes me imagine them as well but drawn in to put more feeling to what the person is talking about
You're speaking of my past life, then. He was a noble samurai. Though, after fighting several wars, retired to his home at the base of Mt. Fuji. Just outside "Suicide Forest." He lived a long, and happy life. Though, he had lost his wife. His son lived on , so not all is lost. ^^
this is the eve of a decisive battle. Under the rain, both camps are tense and silent. Suddenly, the sound of a flute emerges from the forest. It's Yoshibara, the famous blind musician, inspiring them all into prayer and inner peace before the deadly rise of day.
i imagine a samurai version of myself (bald hair, like ponytail bun thing) sitting in an empty room, with the rice paper door pulled aside, and im watching rain fall onto this beautiful lake im not thinking about anything, i just enjoy this spectacle of nature
well when i hear music like that this is what happen to my mind : a great samurai whos have seen too much blood for is lifetime relax under a tree cuze of the heavy rain Katana bend to his shoulder takes out his Shakuhachi and start playing out his sentiment the rain represent his tears and the music (the flute) represent the music for the people who's he as murdered in legit duel like a way to give them respect :P i guess thats just me that thinks like this haha XD
You're not the only one, actually! :D I'm bookmarking this so I can listen to it while I write a story about a character named Yasuo, who's basically a samurai that fled his home because he was wrongly accused. Now the people he knew, friends, even family hunt him down, and he had no choice but to fight them. He even dueled his own brother and end up killing him. :(
Sindre Johnsen Not quite. What I was writing was a fanfic from a character in League of Legends, and I simply explained his backstory to somebody who might not know who he is. :) I'm certain you know who Yasuo is, hence that sarcastic "original" comment, yes? :)
i'm imagining a samurai sitting on the porch of a darkly lit house, playing the flute, his katana lying next to him on the wooden floor. when you hear thunder, he opens his eyes, piercing you with his sharp gaze. the rain drips from the roof, a steady accompaniment for the lament of the warrior.

+don220486 I WILL TRY THAT!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Amaizing. Whished there would be a longer version of it
You are right some times people don't stop and listen to the rain as much as the should it's very powerful
One time, during band camp, the same thing happened to me
I Love the way that these comments are mostly nice and there isn't any hate(towards anything or anyone) with this peaceful music.
Douglas Nessing oh boy your wrong
I hate this comment...
I hate both of you
I feel your hatred growing... 😠😡🤬👿

I picture a man in a black kimono sitting on a rock in the middle of a village playing a shakuhachi listening to the storm
+Jake Galvin Me too!!
Mr. @JakeGalvin,
Is he wear a plain Black Kimono or having a Style of a Monk?
Its first episode And it just ended then a Japanese boy band comes out of nowhere and begins playing the theme to the anime he's in.
unbelievably soothing and allows me to deepen my meditation quickly.
My love for Japan in general is just unspeakable, I aspire to visit, work or even live there when I'm old enough to do so...
Beautiful yet haunting.....I have had too many dreams & hallucinations like that.
ok?!.
Don't do drugs
The Hacker haha
Why would this music be haunting?
I mean it does get stuck in your head, but I think it sounds amazing!
Such soothing music and sounds... I could lay awake all night listening to this.
This is really nice to listen to when you are going to bed. It's so calm and relaxing.

Love the picture, very nice layout. The structure looks cozy, the rain serene, foliage very healthy and lush. It's all so perfect, peaceful.

I need a 3 hours version of this, so calming👍
Perfect for a ten minute meditation session. Thanks!
Normally I think people are over-analyzing music when they write a passage about it, but this really fits what I'm hearing.

Absolutely marvellous! Adore the sound of the rain.

From West to East this is beautiful and soulful music, really takes your emotions and mind to create a painted n poetic expression to yourself.

I see two Samurai overlooking a Fellow village amongst the falling Cherry Blossoms. Every rain drop freezes in motion with every breath of the flute.
I enjoy this kind of music it calms me down
Speaking of meditation... These comments within this video, reminds me of the wandering mind of someone meditating for the first time...
