Th greatness of RUSH and Zeppelin is that you simply don't know where to listen. That is the magic of having every band member be a god on their instrument and have endless creativity. Insane.
Exactly... the forst time you hear a Rush song, you just sort of take it all in at once. Then I listen again and try to focus on the drums. Then I listen again and try to focus on the bass. Then I listen again and try to focus on the guitar. Then I listen again and try to focus on the lyrics. A few dozen more play throughs and I'm still noticing new things... little fills and flourishes... rhythmic interplay between bass and drums, or tonal interplay between bass and guitar. Just an incredible group of world class musicians.
@@ericelander9936 That didn't come out exactly as I meant. What I meant to say is that one can go 60 songs deep with Zep before there's any significant drop off in great music. I'm sorry but Rush can't boast that kind of deep catalog. Sure Rush released a lot of LPs. but only a few of them contained top shelf tunes from start to finish. Rush at their best were phenomenal, but they were not as prolific as Zep. Also, few would put Rush in the top 3 greatest bands of all time, whereas with Zep it's pretty much a given. Beautifully written to offer more context about Neil the human being, and the many ppl in life who feel the way he did, similarly, outside the limelight. How much more he must have felt in that limelight, and a testament to his passion and love for drumming, for music, to create and to express his messages to the World. I greatly admire soulful artists like Neil, like Rush as a creative collaboration of hearts and minds. And Getty’s vocals are fantastic!
I don't think they struggled. No more than the Grateful Dead. They played what they wanted and the fan base loved them. When commercial "radio play" success came, they merely introduced new people into an ever expanding universe.
Geddy Lee is a beast, just as were Alex Lifeson and Neil Peart. Geddy is the only musician I've ever seen that could play bass, the foot organ, and sing all at the same time. They were phenomenal.
Love Rush and was so lucky to see them numerous times. Still heartbroken about Neil. Red Barchetta is a personal favorite. Love the devoted Rush fans!! ❤❤❤❤❤
Rush didn't write songs to make singles. The fact that it WAS a single is purely coincidental. The Moving Pictures album had a number of amazing songs, this one being one of them. Rush fearlessly wrote songs with no thought of how it would be received. Their music speaks for itself.
Get a couple bottles of wine in them, and sit them down to dinner and conversation, and you could see yet another side of why we love them. They were more than just bandmates together.
i was very lucky to meet Neil when i was 14 after a show on the tour for this album...I was learning drums at the time & rarely for him he came up to me with pair of his sticks & encouraged me to keep going, this story made it into "The Day I was There" written by Richard Houghton.I am now 58 & listen to Rush most days
Rush is "Art Rock" at of its finest. My brother was a "Rush Freak" as they were called in the '80s. And Neil Peart was the God of Drums. My brother learned how to play every Rush song by ear by the time he entered college, with drums he bought on his own from pumping gas at the local Amoco. I learned the lyrics to every song passively by listening to my brother practice again and again. Every Rush concert is packed with air drummers and air guitarists, all wishing they could jump up on stage and jam alongside their rock idols. Not everyone gets Rush, but glad to see you enjoyed it.
One of the things I love most about this song, is Alex's solo. The way he makes that guitar croon and wail feels SO much like the emotion the song is trying to encapsulate. That feeling of isolation, even though you are surrounded by people. It makes me think of how Neil probably felt on the tour bus, traveling from gig to gig, looking out the window, contemplating these very lyrics while he struggled with his feelings about fame and celebrity. And you have the guitar vocalizing that feeling. Just fantastic.
This is one of my favorite Rush songs. I can relate to it as an introvert, and I love the emotion in Geddy's vocals. I suggest checking out Rush live. One of my favorite live performances is 'Freewill' from the Snakes and Arrows tour. Watching them bring their complex songs to life in concert is an amazing experience!
"All the world is indeed a stage, we are merely players, performers and portrayers, each another's audience outside the gilded cage" absolutely brilliant explanation of life. No matter where you are or what you do you can learn from watching someone else and someone is learning by watching you. This has always been my absolute favorite RUSH song. The lyrics are captivating and brilliant, the musicianship is out of this world (typical for RUSH) and every time I hear this song I discover another nuance. Thanks for your reaction!!
I saw them on this tour in 81 and it was so amazing and hey dude, it's only 3 guys with the greatest drummer that ever lived RIP Neil. In concert every song sounded exactly as it did on the studio album. Absolute perfection.
Neil Peart was the man. Best damn drummer ever. You express yourself very well. I enjoy your comments and reactions. You speak from the heart. That's why I subscribed to your channel. You the man.
The lyric "For those who wish to seem, those who wish to be" is a paraphrasing of the Roman philosopher and statesman Cicero. Esse Quam Videri, "To be, rather than to seem." Yes, this song was on an album. 🤨 "Moving Pictures" is the album that really brought Rush into the mainstream. Every song on this album is great. You can just put it on, and never skip a track. 🤙😎
Nice reaction! Great analysis on a first listen. Really appreciate your perspective. The time signatures jump around a lot in this song (no surprise there - it's Rush, right?) but it's funny for someone like me who grew up listening to this music, I know this song so well now, it "feels" like it might as well be 4:4 time to me. But it does take several listens to be able to start to anticipate what's coming next. I especially love how they slow it to half time during Alex's guitar solo and then begin to build back to full speed by the end of the solo and because they do that, Geddy's bass really stands out as well during Alex's solo. Such a beautifully clean and rich arrangement. That's why I love this album so much. The overall sound they achieve with the production is simply perfect. The whole album is ear candy. It was produced in 1981, at the dawn of digital music, with the advent of the Compact Disc just a year earlier, though initial sales were overwhelmingly traditional vinyl LPs (and cassettes).
Fell in love with their music as a teenager even though it wasn't what I normally listened to. When I put one of the discs of the album into my computer there was a beautiful program that created illusions with moving dots on the disc alongside the album. I had to buy it three times I wore it out so much.
This is one of my favourite songs ever. I have noticed everyone comments on the drums. But I hardly hear them. My mind is on the guitar, the bass and the voice. The drum doesnt even really register in my head. Makes me wonder what they hear that I don't.
You should check out a Limelight drums isolation track recording. I'm pretty sure there are some you can check out on RUclips. When you hear that, you'll never hear this song the same way again. The Professor is "on point" with all of the beautiful variations and fills he employs as he plays all around the original beat laid down in the first few measures. From there it's all an exploration of variations and syncopated versions that seem to never truly repeat at any point in the song, and yet he somehow manages to keep the listener (and his bandmates) on the beat with utmost precision throughout.
Yes, we'll said. Rush IS a High IQ musicianship yet have Feel mixed in. Technical with a heart, you will continue to find. Neil and Rush are why I started playing drums and arranging. They were a springboard to my love for Technical, structure and Feel. Served me well.
Rush when the tools were very sharp. Yes, Rush fans are not stupid. Its intelligent music. And you can listen to it for decades. Lyrics are complex enough to not get tiresome.
I see Rush I click! This is one of my favourite Alex Lifeson guitar solos. ❤ This song is about Neil's uncomfortableness in becoming famous. He was a shy and very private person. I am reading Geddy Lee's book My Effin Life right now and it is a fascinating read. I would suggest picking up a copy. Lots of great pics in it too. Song suggestions Caravan from the Time Machine Tour live in Cleveland Earthshine live in Rio Cheers 🇨🇦
Rush was one of the best rock bands of all time at changing time signatures. Always kept you off balance. Just when you thought you had a beat, they would change it up. 3/4, 6/8, 5/4, 9/4, 7/4, didn't matter. They weren't doing it for the beat...they did it for the music. Amazing and talented musicians...true professionals, all of them. Alex Lifeson is criminally underrated as a guitarist. One of the top 100 GOATs, no question.
One of the greatest bands ever. Top 5 drummer. Vocalist umatched in the ability to do 3 things at once, while being a top 10 bassist. Then a top 5 guitarist to top it all off. Amazing.
RIP... Neil Peart, named one of the best drummers in the world, many times. Rush is a psychedelic-intricate-complex-musical-rock-style, often with out of this world lyrics. Sometimes fantasy, sometimes not. Mostly, also written by Neil Peart! A Truly Great Canadian Band. Neil was an avid traveling motorcyclists; traveled many countries on 2 wheels; he wrote books about it. Such talent in Rush with Geddy Lee with his unique vocals, and Alex Lifeson on bass and rhythm at times. Geddy also played many instruments on their albums. As of 2023 - Rush has 44 albums, including 19 studio albums, 8 live albums, and 6 compilations. A prolific band. Glad you discovered them Polo. Listen to the song, "Tom Sawyer", preferably a live track!
Fell in love with Rush with 2112 when I was a kid and I'm a musician of several years and yeah I paused it right at the beginning to say good ear! You are right, the opening at least is in 7s. And you can do this if you can find a downbeat and then just force yourself to count 1 and 2 and 3 and 4 and 5 and 6 and 7 and Bam, right down on the one again just start the cycle over. We are so used to it going for that extra beat of 8 that in 7s, it jumps out early and surprises us every time by hitting the downbeat on the one early.
too bad you never got to see Rush live, they played in Cleveland many times over the years. I saw them 6 times, one of my favorite bands, no one like them.
Loved that replay of the guitar solo. So emotive despite fairly sparse playing. Lifeson is a huge talent. Not to mention Peart on the drums or Lee on the bass / keys
Neil was creeped out by any sort of adulation and had a difficult time dealing with the fame that came from being the world's greatest drummer. This song is basically his thoughts on what one has to do to live the lifestyle without getting caught up in all the wackiness that comes with it. 😊
The lyrics came first then they played the music to fit the lyrics. Geddy lee played bass, sang and played the keyboard. Amazing. Neil Peart what a great person. Would be great to meet someone like that.
Polo - - you HAVE to listen to Xanadu 1981 live version and then YYZ live in Rio. Remember - 3 guys, 3 GUYS - making all this music, all the melody all of the complexity that seamlessly weaves and fits together.....

Thanks Polo. Great review of RUSH a prog rock band with an amazing drummer!
Best band ever. This whole album is simply a masterpiece.
Limelight is the last track (forth song) on the first side of the album Moving Pictures. It was released as a single after the album came out.
I see Rush I click! This is one of my favourite Alex Lifeson guitar solos. ❤
This song is about Neil's uncomfortableness in becoming famous. He was a shy and very private person.
I am reading Geddy Lee's book My Effin Life right now and it is a fascinating read.
I would suggest picking up a copy. Lots of great pics in it too.
Song suggestions
Caravan from the Time Machine Tour live in Cleveland
Earthshine live in Rio
Cheers 🇨🇦
Rush was one of the best rock bands of all time at changing time signatures. Always kept you off balance. Just when you thought you had a beat, they would change it up. 3/4, 6/8, 5/4, 9/4, 7/4, didn't matter. They weren't doing it for the beat...they did it for the music. Amazing and talented musicians...true professionals, all of them. Alex Lifeson is criminally underrated as a guitarist. One of the top 100 GOATs, no question.
Been a fan since the 70’s! This is my favourite of a deep catalog of classics!!
Just like Zeppelin, Rush is also full of great hits, so you got a lot to discover yet.
Rush, have damn near perfected, classic rock song structure! 🎉
I love Rush! Neil Peart , one of the best. RIP
The drums *are* pretty good, now that you mention it.... that drummer isn't too shabby... 👍 😁
🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
One of the greatest bands ever.
Top 5 drummer. Vocalist umatched in the ability to do 3 things at once, while being a top 10 bassist. Then a top 5 guitarist to top it all off.
Amazing.
Geddy Lee also unmatched in vocals. Sorry. No one sounds like him.
Love seeing Polo getting locked in, it’s us getting to live vicariously. Great work brother, all the love.
Rush...nuff said!!!
You would probably like early Rush, much more hard rock. Try 2112, Working man or, the Necromancer.
My favourite to play of the handful of Rush tunes I learned in the late-mid 00s. Amazing song, band.
😊🤙🏼🎶❤🍁❤️✨️🕊
Listen to the song, "Tom Sawyer", preferably a live track!
thanks for highlighting another great Canadian act.
Tom Sawyer (of course!)
Freewill
Anthem
Jacob's Ladder
La Villa Strangiato
YYZ
too bad you never got to see Rush live, they played in Cleveland many times over the years. I saw them 6 times, one of my favorite bands, no one like them.
My favorite Rush song! And when they do it live (I've seen them several times) it's always spot on!
I'm not a huge Rush fan, I don't know all their music, but this is my favorite song by them.
I went to a LOT of concerts in this time period. I’ve never seen 3 men put out so much sound. The lyrics were astounding.
Awesome Polo, glad you liked listening to Rush. Thankyou and Cheers bud.
Loved that replay of the guitar solo. So emotive despite fairly sparse playing. Lifeson is a huge talent. Not to mention Peart on the drums or Lee on the bass / keys
Polo! Good song to review.
Rush Rules! Neil Peart was one of the greatest drummers ever RIP ❤ and Geddy Lee is is genius on all instruments and vocals 😊
And how does so much musical sound come from only 3 people??!!
The production on this album was perfect!!!!
Neil was creeped out by any sort of adulation and had a difficult time dealing with the fame that came from being the world's greatest drummer. This song is basically his thoughts on what one has to do to live the lifestyle without getting caught up in all the wackiness that comes with it. 😊
3 guys make all that great music.
Welcome to the Rush rabbit hole. Enjoy the ride.😎
It's amazing when you think about it that there are only three members in this band.
Very special music, hardcore talent, deep down real feeling, made to last. 😊❤ Thank you
-next try any other song they made!🤩🥳
Welcome to the Rush family! Peace
