I've never seen anyone fail the tutorial barrels! For the vine swing, you do NOT have to climb the vines before swinging, you just swing. You can also press R to turn around on the vines. Try it! Beaver Bother deserved more hate, it was the bane of my existence as a child. A lot of the barrel mini games seemed repetitive and annoying.

I would love a brand new DK platformer on the Switch with the exact same style of this game, but with the addition of quickly swapping kongs immediately. Imagine an even bigger game with Donkey, Diddy, Tiny, Chunky, Lanky, and then an extended roster with the rest of the Kongs either in minigames or other minor playable parts. Just imagine a fully optimized, modernized, and cleaned up successor to DK64 akin to Super Mario Odyssey.

Okay, I watched the video, I never played the game growing up, mainly because I was a PlayStation kid back then, but I did watch my cousins beat it on their N64 it was not until 2017 that I got to experience the game myself as an adult on my WiiU, and man, this game deserves all the criticisms it got back then, it's far from the worst game ever made, but man, DK64 is a great example of how NOT to make a collectathon platformer, the levels are TOO big, there are too many collectables, some of the mini games are frustrating to beat (especially that fucking beetle race), and the enemies respawn too quick like you've mentioned. also, you forgot to mention that the WiiU Virtual Console version of the game is impossible to complete 100%, since the game runs on a stable 30fps, which is fine, but it makes some of the bonus rounds unbeatable, this is because in the original N64 version, the framerate in some of the bonus rounds ran below 30fps, and the controls were optimized with the low framerates in mind, so the stable framerate in the WiiU version is more of a determent than a positive for some of the sections of the game. so yeah, I think DK64 didn't quite stand the test of time, imo, unlike classics such as Mario 64 and Banjo Kazooie, and if Nintendo wants to revisit the collectathon formula with DK and the gang, a modern remake would be impossible to make without fundamentally changing the game, but I do support a spiritual successor of some sort, that, I would love to see. anyway, even though I don't quite agree with you on your opinion of the game, I did enjoy watching it, and would love to see you do more revisits to some of the games from your childhood, keep it up, man. :)
This game holds the world record for most collectibles in game 3,821. I was mind blown when I found that out. I remember as a kid thinking there were a lot of things to collect but I didn’t think it was that much lol
This was a pretty good analysis! I definitely agree with you on a lot of those criticisms. I got 48 coins the first time I finished that bug race... Also, I felt like having to beat the original Donkey Kong arcade game in order to complete it was the biggest drawback, that took me hours. It would have been fine for something to 100% the game, but just to beat it normally was a bit ridiculous. Beaver Bother is horribly broken too, the harder version of that took me about an hour itself (at least it's pretty short unlike the original DK arcade game). I completed the game on the Wii U as well in 2020 (thanks to the pandemic giving me lots of free time), and while it's mostly an improvement over the original, the faster gameplay completely breaks some timing sections. Later versions of Krazy Kong Klamor (WHY WOULD YOU USE THOSE INITIALS) become absolutely impossible without pause buffering because it goes so quickly, as well as the Tiny sections of the K. Rool boss fight. The rabbit race with Lanky is also nearly impossible, I had to use a trick to get a headstart every attempt before I could eventually win. And like you said, the right stick replacing the C-buttons definitely led to problems for me throughout the entire game, but altogether the Wii U version is probably the definitive version so far. I hope we get it on Switch as well! Though it'll probably be a while before I'll want to put up with playing it from start to finish again. And some nitpicky nerdy corrections; Hideout Helm's time limit is actually based on the number of blueprints you collect throughout the game, not necessarily 50 minutes. Lastly, it's pronounced "Kay Rool," not "Krool." :P

DK has always been about the masses or the Apes against the Elites taking out bananas. The most progressive game.
