This really is one of the best and powerful videos that i've seen in quite a while. Thankyou so very much for sharing, mate. This is a great video for people who are just hanging on. Woodwork is such a great therapeutic thing. My old man was a farrmer and logger in the Huon Valley, and he used to woodturn as his self-therapy during a terminal brain tumour. I sat and watched him until one day he encouraged me to be involved too. He passed away not too long afterwards but I still turn now 50 years later and wonder if he'd approve of the things that I make.

Dale ! Thank you so much mate, the gravity of that compliment is sincerely appreciated. I really hope someone would manage to pull something from the video in such dire times .... I mean, I hope they can just generally pull something from anywhere in those times really. Wow, I couldn't imagine how cool of an experience it would of been back in the day, down in the Huon, getting to witness life like that. You're old man sounds like he was obviously tough as nails, but the fact that he was proactively turning for therapy speaks volumes about how open & wise was too. ❤ when did your escape to the mainland??

Hey mate. I'm Michael and my baby woodworking brand is WildWoods. Thankfully my story isn't as difficult as yours has been but I have had my mental health challenges and still do. Every time i step into my garage for some workshop time it helps me recover from the stresses of life and I know how lucky I am to have found that outlet. My lovely wife Estelle helped me buy my first functional lathe and I still have it to this day 6 or 7 years later.

I must find my lost horse amongst the trees and I hope many others do too.
I had a comfy start to life. I went to uni. I have never been plagued by any kind of addiction. I have simply done the 9-5 for 35 years in order to feed the family. I have shown up every day to do what my employers need me to do. Do I have a vocation? Do I have purpose? This video just shines a light on life and living and what that might actually be.
Sam this is a brave confessional and feels to me like it was a message delivered straight from the soul. Your story is as beautiful as your mallet and the allegory is so rich. Thank you for having buttons that I can press and for your inspiration.

Thank you so much, for the such thoughtful sentiments & compliments. I really appreciate it 🙏 I don't think "simply" has anything close to a right in describing what showing up to a 9to5, for 35yrs looks like. That is a truly commendable path, even more so by the fact that more often than not, it's a path blazed by necessity. I hope you manage to find that horse, purpose or at least meaning in some or it all 🙏 every couple of years, I get to thinking like this & I'm reminded of David Foster Wallaces - 'This is water' commencement speech .... I'm going to go youtube it now again, maybe you might get something out of it too, if you haven't already. Thank you once again, for watching & contributing

A constant stream of youtube content over years finally got me to the place where I was feeling educated enough to take some small steps into guitar import and restoration. Like yourself I was feeling very much out of direction, no focus, constantly fatigued and of little worth to the house, unemployed off the back of a failed career in the ADF. With a little bit of spare cash to outlay and acquire some stock I was quickly turning over stock and able to rinse and repeat thanks the the knowledge I had gained through simply listening and observing. Come covid that market was ripped from me and I needed to go big. An inheritance meant I could go all in on some woodworking machines and tools so I took a huge leap of faith and as you put it just kept taking the next step. I built myself a handful of guitars before I got my first commission. I continued to make the push to one-up myself, my efforts were recognised and I am lucky enough to find myself in a position of a very niche market instructing others how to build instruments, leading them through a process one step at a time that they too would not have thought possible prior to their course. Today my first student wrapped up his build, it was a pretty huge deal for me!

Thank you for this inspiring video. Woodwork has been very important to me for several years, and especially over the past few months since my mother passed away. When it seems as if there aren't enough hours in the day it's important to make time for something that brings joy, something that occupies the mind. There are few things more satisfying than using a sharp hand plane. I take every possible opportunity to use my great-grandfather's Stanley no. 6. Making bowls on a lathe is very rewarding. I recognise from your video that excitement of thinking about a new project. I'm realising more and more just how lucky I am to have these things as part of my life. Welding is my next challenge. Keep up the good work.

Wow... Great story Sam, I'm here because of Dainer's recommendation and I'm so glad I took the time to watch your video. I'm wrapped you've found something in woodworking that helped you take that first step on your journey.
I'm very lucky in that I think I already have the 3 hobby thing covered and while I get to be creative in my day job (software design) I have started woodworking to feed my creativity in a manner that results in a physical, tangible result and the quote from Dainer you put at the end was my first real step to that as well. Just Get Started.
Over the last number weeks, I've struggled to find time for "joining bits of wood to other bits of wood" and I've become a grumpy bastard around the house.
Today I snuck out for an hour and the simple job of taking some old pieces of reclaimed timber, de-nailing them, and milling them square on an arrangement of table saw jigs I've all learnt from various RUclipsr's has given me an extra little spring in my step, and a splinter in my hand...
Thanks again for taking the time to make this video, it really was amazing to hear your journey and see the process of that mind boggling joint.

Your video, your story, is powerful. You are an impressive person. I fell upon your video via "the algorithm". It is probably the first time that I am glad for what it served me to watch. I have no idea how you discovered your video style, but it works. I'm not sure it would work all the time, but for this one story it was perfect. Thank you for sharing your story, your thoughts, and the fortitude for seeing this all through. Finally, one of my favorite quotes is from Abraham Lincoln. It sounds trite, but is deeply meaningful, albeit difficult to achieve: "You are as happy as you choose to be.". Abe had a pretty crappy bit of luck throughout his life (some good as well, but a civil war, a crazy wife, a dead son, and his own depression), but in spite of all that he chose to be happy. It is true. Thank you again.

Thank you so much Bill, I appreciate that you stumbled here & that you took the time to reach out. How fitting to leave an Abe Lincoln qoute too 🙏 I don't recall hearing it before but am very familiar with the line of thinking & believe it as well. People in horrific circumstances, pain & poverty, with no foreseeable way out, can still remarkably function everyday as happy & content people. The mind truly is a powerful thing, for better or for worse. Thanks for the video style compliment too, it just organically came together like it did on this one. The whole process was & is very fluid, so I'm as interested as the next to see where it steers me. Thanks once again mate, take care

I can relate alot to your mental struggles. I had similar issues myself. Especially during the cold and gloomy months of winter. What ended up saving me was being able to build my own small workshop in the backyard. Still have some rough days. But as soon as I go into my workshop and pick up my tools. Everything slowly melts away and the only thing i hear is the sound of tools.

    • @GumtreeHillWoodwork

Looking after your mental health is definitely something a lot of people don't think about until they NEED to. But once you do & you discover the tools to treat it, then it's a game changer!
