I'd like to think the Empress Dowager knew Ruyi's feelings for her son, just to live a peaceful life and not to be burdened with the ambition of Crown Prince after this encounter.
I only wish Empress Dowager knew it earlier. She was rather mean to Ruyi (understandable given who Ruyi was related to) during the early years of her marriage. Empress Dowager often made Ruyi stuck between a rock and a hard place when the Emperor's agenda conflicts with his mother's.
Even this drama is fake history (some of the stories) but the emotion, the cruelty, tactics, greedy, selfishness were truly human being. The positive thing is we can learn from this drama a lot of things. I love this drama even the ending just like the true history. A sad and messed up.
You know, given how Zhen Huan lost her own children in Empressess in the Palace it makes ton more sense why she helps Ruyi protect her son and take down Wei Yanwan. Thus it makes me wonder at times if these two ladies would've gotten along had they been born in the same time? I think do to Ruyi's aunt they would've been friends, or possible enemies if Ruyi's could've molded her against Zhen Huan if that were the case.
Empresses is the Prequel, and yes, watching it explains A LOT, not only because she is so badass and strong, but in reality it says a lot even about the damn Emperor

I know that Ruyi's only son eventually passed away long after her death but I wonder if the descendants of Ruyi and Qianlong Emperor ever continued. Did it ever stop? Did Empress Dowager keep her word?
I wouldn’t be surprised that most of this was true in the ancient times, especially as the Emperor’s family where basically blessed with blood. What was probably more irritating is that there were probably hard headed Emperors who would only pay attention to their favorites and probably let so many bad stuff happened.

can someone explain to me the evolution of zhen huan and ruyi's relationship? seems like zhen huan respected ruyi more and more over the years despite their rocky beginning, but i dont quite understand why
This is just my take on it. Zhen huan didn’t like Ruyi because Ruyi’s aunt was her rival. So, in the beginning of the show, during the wife selection, if Ruyi were to be the first empress, then her aunt would have a strong backer in the harem, causing for more rivalries between her and Zhen Huan. However, after some time, when Zhen Huan got to actually know Ruyi, she realized they were actually very similar in regard to how they originally wanted to live in the harem. Empresses in the Palace is the prequel to this show, and it shows how Zhen Huan lived during her time in the harem, and the crazy fights she and Ruyi’s aunt had.
Yes in the beginning ZH thought Ruyi was just like her aunt a schemer hiding behind a fake smile.. but as she observed Ruyi and the emperors relationship she saw that Ruyi didn’t want power she just wanted to love the emperor and be left alone.. ZH knew from experience how hard it is to love the emperor so deeply and have him disappoint u.. in previous story she said that a tub of charcoal was more reliable than the words of the emperor😳.. so I think she wanted to spare Ruyi the pain of finding that out
After Ruyi's death, she confesses to the Emperor that after it all, status, wealth, and power meant nothing to her; that she simply loved the Emperor deeply and sought to be loved in return. She admits Ruyi was a better person than herself. Ultimately, Ruyi won her respect.

Because of this, things were changed in this series which ended up not aligning with Empresses in the Palace. I really would've loved to see how the show would pan out if the writers were left to their devices.
It was because of her Aunt the Empress, her son tried to usurp the throne, that got her banished to the cold palace ( her own) either the son was exiled or something else. So basically the Ula Nara clan are deemed not trustworthy despite the fact that the Aisin Gioro clan aren't that much better either.

I've smitten by Qin Lan as the Empress in Yanxi Palace, for her elegance and her grandeur dresses and hair styles, so this show is confusing me. I can't differentiate between the Maids and the royals, to my eyes, they dressed similiarly, with just slight different. The eunuchs dresses is as glamour as the emperor/guards has. So yeah, I'm taking Yanxi Palace side.
to me, it's the opposite. in yanxi palace, the maids' clothing quality is too close to the noble ladies imo. the hairstyles too. the easily distinguishable ones are the gugus and momos

Special order dress > wear by few > expensive > noble. Only Noble use embroidery dress. "Maid clothes is too close to noble ladies" is a bit forced.

説穿了是管理領導能力問題。歷史上真的魏和太后看來是知道順勢而為再圖之，繼后(如懿)不願，所以下埸最慘，也連累了兒子，卻也怨不得別人。在劇中起碼如懿的姑母所做是有目的(太子和皇位)，如懿是做了一堆動作卻沒目的性，沒為兒子謀劃，也沒保護真心對自己忠心之人。
愛與不愛的區別而已

I can't differentiate between the Maids and the royals, to my eyes, they dressed similiarly, with just slight different. The eunuchs dresses is as glamour as the emperor/guards has.

Yanxi Palace is more accurate about hairstyles, not about clothing and accessories. This is just historically accurate.
to me, it's the opposite. in yanxi palace, the maids' clothing quality is too close to the noble ladies imo. the hairstyles too. the easily distinguishable ones are the gugus and momos

Only Noble use embroidery dress. "Maid clothes is too close to noble ladies" is a bit forced.
