It's better than a 7. It's true the album starts with the two weakest songs, but it ends with 25 minutes of fantastic music. I think if Women had kept going and released the exact same album, you'd probably give it a 9.
I don't think that's the way Anthony thinks. I think he's very objective about the scores he gives to the albums despite them being released by his favorite artists. Also, Public Strain is two steps ahead of this album.
No, it's better than a 7 to you. Why do so many people think reviews are "wrong"? That makes no sense. Either way, Anthony looks at the technical side of things as well as other objective things like production and such. And jesus, 7 isn't even bad. Yeah, he didn't love it, but he buys the vinyls of some of the albums he gives a 7 to. Hell, he even got the Government Plates vinyl and he gave that album a 6. Just chill.
xTheOxx but i said IN the review that if women has stayed a band this album would have felt like they were treading water to me. also, public strain was a 9, and this was no public strain.
After listening to this album for 6 years, I'm ready to give it a 10. I'm a huge fan of women, but I think this album is a significant step ahead of either Women LP. The ideas are much more complex and developed, and the sequencing of tracks is flawless. This album obviously borrows heavily from what Women was doing, but it's such a unique and enveloping sound - I feel like I'm exploring a new planet when I'm listening to this album. There is a mystique and singularity around this album that few other LPs manage to achieve - I can't help comparing it to Spiderland in this regard. I know this album has generally received critical praise, but I still think it's underrated, and I hope steadily gains recognition as the seminal work that it is, rather than fading into obscurity.
As a reviewer I would definitely like to say you have a great way with words as far as describing how the songs sound lol. Like even if I've already heard it then when you describe it on the review I'm like "wow, it does sound like that" haha.
Good review, but I enjoyed the album a lot more than you did. The recording quality (compared to Public Strain) changes the dynamic of the music a LOT for me, shifting more towards complex, songwriting focused music rather than the detached, cold-yet-somehow-still-really-passionate style of Women. You can really hear what made up the sum of Women if you listen to both Viet Cong and Pat's current project Cindy Lee (super no-wave lofi psych blues trio). Definitely agree with the comment about Pointless Experience lyrics. Lyrics and drums are probably already the most underrated part of this album.
you're my hero, fist-thony bumptano some of your reviews i don't agree with, i watch some reviews without giving the album a listen to at first, but I've found a lot of great new music through you, much more than if i had been looking by myself. Thanks for everything.
I had no idea Vietcong was related to Women, who's album Public Strain was probably my favorite of its respective year. And Shaking Hand might be one of my favorite songs ever. Thanks for putting out this review!
OOOHHHMYYYYYGOOOODDD! DARAYDEEOHHED EEEEEANNN REEEEEINNNBOOAAASSSSS! U MANSTER EVILTHANY BADTANO! HOW DAIR U TEEEEESE USS WEETH DARAYDEEOHHED EFTER CALAASSIKS WEEK! theneedledrop I believe he was saying, in a very sophisticated way, that you've teased us with the Radiohead album in the background right after classics week. And I think you understood the "Cal's list" part, Fantano... Tell him to hurry up! >:(
first 4 or 5 listens to this i wasn't sold on the whole thing, but i knew i dig the style so i kept listening. eventually it all just clicked and now i totally love it. really excited to see what these guys do in the future.
I'm liking this record quite a lot. Continental Shelf, Silhouettes, and Death are such great tracks! I would give this record a strong 8/10. It's not quite as good as Public Strain, but it's pretty great.
As a Women fan as well, I don't think this album is as good as Women's self titled or Public Strain. Although, I still think this Viet Cong project is pretty solid and an improvement on "Cassette."
Hey Anthony! I'm with you there! The album felt like a Strong 7! You pretty much stated what I thought for the most part on the record! Next review? My vote is Sleater Kinney's new album: No Cities to Love
The tracks prior to Bunker Buster are less than compelling, but everything afterwards (Bunker Buster included) is pretty awesome. That said, with such a short album you kind of have to bat a 1000 or you fail, similar to Nehruviandoom.
I think it gets released in three days and that I'm looking forward to receiving it in the mail. Other than that, I mostly think the internet age is fascinating.
Continental Shelf sounds like early 80"s Echo and the Bunnymen to me. I like more than I dislike on this album. Seeing them live next month, opinions subject to change.
I loved this album, though it hits a post-punk soft spot I have personally. I never really listened to Women, but absolutely must now. I do agree the weakest songs start the album, but it builds to such an amazing climax, it's totally worth it. Crank this up to 11.
Think I'm gonna try and review this myself as well. And I do find myself in agreement with your for the most part. The sonic similarities to Women don't perturb me that much just cause I felt I still haven't heard enough of that band - so I am really happy their sound is still being done in this outfit. But yes, NEWSPAPER SPOONS really doesn't work that well. The last minute or so I think sounds good but the pummeling beat (that reminds me quite a bit of pharmakon) plus the vocals do not work.
Anthony you should do a review of Hozier's self-titled album if you get the chance. I don't know if it's your type of music or whatever but I've heard some pretty good things about it and wouldn't mind hearing what you have to say about it.
A 7/10 is exactly what I would give it as well. Do you plan on reviewing the new Steve Roach album? It's available for name-your-price on his Bandcamp. I haven't heard it yet, but his album Structures From Silence is one of my all-time favorites.
So far the first half of the album is under whelming. I really have high expectations for panda bear and so far I'm a little bit disappointed. But I hope this one is a grower
I am extremely new to your channel (I subscribed today) Although I have watched some of your past videos. I am not sure if you do reviews on really low key bands ( when I say this I mean unheard of) I would really love for you to do a review on a grindcore type band (I say this loosely) called Ovaryrot. You don't even have to do a video about it. That being said I would really like to hear your thoughts and opinions about it. You can just message me. If you want to hear their music they are on Facebook and also you can contact them to have something sent to you. Also have a bandcamp. You don't have to but I enjoy your reviews (ones that I have watched)
Have you seen Mount Eerie's new music video for THIS?? Not sure how I feel about the song or the video... and it's a private video on youtube which is annoooying
Hi Anthony, I think you should review Dan Mangan + Blacksmith's new record. It's called Club Meds and if not worth a review, worth a good listen. Thanks!
ooo, I really dig this. reminds me of interpol with like psychedelic lo-fi overdubs. I'm saying a strong 7 right now. Intro track is a kinda meh, but other than that, all of the tracks are at least solid and above.
This album has really grown over time. It's better than anything they've done as Preoccupations and if we're honest it's better than the work they did as Women. Reappraise it please Melon.
Hey Anthony! I really respect you and your opinion, would you mind checking out my best albums of 2014 list and letting me know what you think? Please and thank you!
Im new to this channel. What is Fatanos favorite band and what stuff would you recommend for someone like me who hasn't dived into music that much like all of you here seem to have? Thanks
its actually an old album but its realy good compared to his shty knock madness, and i just didnt find a review of yours on this album its from 2010 though
Shai Fischer theneedledrop bruhs. hopsin has pound syndrome coming out soon. which was also after he freakin punked everyone by saying he was moving to Australia and quitting the rap game only to reveal it was a gag two weeks later.
Honestly, time has shown this album is higher than a 7
7.1

My pick so far for Album of the Year.

I have a feeling that Fantano is going to give the new Panda Bear record a 6 or less...... Just a suspicion.... Is that correct Anthony?
Never mind. It was.
Thoughts on the new Viet Cong album:
I just found this awesome album " Yeti " by Amon Duul ll . Listening to that =D
As a Women fan as well, I don't think this album is as good as Women's self titled or Public Strain. Although, I still think this Viet Cong project is pretty solid and an improvement on "Cassette."

Great review Anthony. For the next review I'm really curious to know what you think of Adult Jazz's "Gist Is"
Continental Shelf sounds like early 80"s Echo and the Bunnymen to me. I like more than I dislike on this album. Seeing them live next month, opinions subject to change.
When will we see Cal's favorite albums of 2000&fourteen?
Ceilingthony Fantano
Are you going to review Until The Ribbion Breaks's debut and Nacho Picasso's new project?
Can you review Enter Shikari's new album?
eh?
seconded
I'm making it a goal this year to listen to every single release you review on here.
This album was a 10, after 9 years, still haven’t found something with the same vibes and background as this album and the one that came after.
I loved this album, though it hits a post-punk soft spot I have personally. I never really listened to Women, but absolutely must now. I do agree the weakest songs start the album, but it builds to such an amazing climax, it's totally worth it. Crank this up to 11.
I can't double like enough for Fantano and the In Rainbows LP behind him :(
Thanks Anthony for making me listen to Women. Really great stuff.
By the way, have you heard any of Pat Flegel's new project, Androgynous Mind?
You should review Wand - Golem ;)
IMO In Rainbows > Kid A

Benjamin Clementine, Asaf Avidan. Highly recommend you get on those.
Have you considered Frank Iero's newest album Stomachaches? I have to say I actually really enjoyed it. Not perfect, but definitely enjoyable
Newspaper Spoons was one of the best in my opinion. Reminds me of the Fall.
Hey Anthony, have you gotten a chance to listen to anything from Pat Flegel's project, Cindy Lee? What did you think?
I am extremely new to your channel (I subscribed today) Although I have watched some of your past videos. You should look into a project called Car Seat Headrest.

ooo, I really dig this. reminds me of interpol with like psychedelic lo-fi overdubs. I'm saying a strong 7 right now. Intro track is a kinda meh, but other than that, all of the tracks are at least solid and above.
This album was great. It will most likely be one of my favorites of the year. I didn't have the same feelings you had as I have never heard of Women.
agreed, i’ve never met a woman in my life. my mother was not present for my birth. my father had to do the work himself.
@@skeetus I forgot all about this video and album and comment lol
