This is one you could have kept a secret! I have used the HulaPopper since I was five years old! Every year, successful! Oh and by the way I am now 69 years old and still fishing them every year!
Your initial comments matched my thoughts when I saw Hula Popper in the title. I could visualize some old baits in an old tackle box now stored in my garage. Man, seeing those fish come into the boat attached to a Hula Popper really bring back the memories. I think I’ll get some of those new Hula Poppers and give ‘em a try as there’s no way I’d risk losing the ones in that tackle box. Sorry about your rod, Matt.
The hula popper and jitter bug is all my dad talks about, I’m so glad you made this video, now a days old school is the best school, awesome video I would love to see more old school baits that the fish haven’t seen in a while
When I got back in to bass fishing after a 29 yr hiatus all the lures I used to use were now “old school” with no one using them. I love using these baits since the fish haven’t seen them before and no one ever believes me when I tell them what I’m catching bass on :)
Yep. Dad and Uncle Bob both had the Hula Popper and the Jitterbug when they'd head out to Seneca creek off the Potomac back in the late 50s and early 60s. I've got both and always have them when me and my grandson hit the pomds!!
Man that's a bummer that you broke your rod but now you have an excuse to build another one!!! These on the water shows are really great and smallmouth fishing is sooo fun!! Thanks for sharing with us!
Bringing back memories of goin through my dad and grandpa's tackle boxes. It was always so exciting cuz they always had the good stuff lazy Ike and creek chubs and old spoons. Good times
Like you I couldn't tell you how many bass I caught as a kid on the frog/yellow skirt. But then I got so smart, I stopped using them...what a dope! Be assured I'll be dusting mine off sometime soon. That said, I REALLY enjoyed seeing/hearing you on the water. Hope to see more of the same and thanks for your help!
I still have some that I bought 50 years ago and you are correct they catch good bass I really need to put one in my box to use thanks for your good video and good fishing
Man, forgot all about these. Gets me motivated to dig through my Dad's old tackle box to see what else I've forgotten about. I did pick back up some Jitterbugs last year, another bait I used to use as a kid. Just hearing that distinctive gurgle shoots you right back to childhood again.....
I can attest to this! 😆 My Nephew was throwing a Hula popper one late afternoon next to a piece of cover and BLAM! 5lb exploded on it lol They still work:) great vid Matt 👍
Love Hula Popper, one thing I struggle with is bc of the size and big trebles, when they inhale it like that last one, it can be a chore getting it out, even with pliers without hurting the fish, especially largeies.
You could have edited that part out but thanks for showing us the pros occasionally break a rod, too! Appreciate the casting tips as well. Watching you using the current and cut banks to your advantage. Thanks!
A true classic another example of where we have moved on to newer technology lures and forgotten the ones that have caught many many fish over the years thanks for sharing
WOW, you nailed it!! My first big bass was on the Mann's Jelly worm out of my Dad's tackle box, and yes lots of Hula poppers, Jitterbugs, Crazy Crawlers, Mudbugs, River runts, Flat fish, and daredevils!!! I'm more partial to Jitterbugs, but I have a few old Hula poppers. Hopefully they used upgraded hardware. I miss my Dad. He was a great fisherman, and I still have alot of his tackle, Usually I have one of his baits, rods, and sometimes both in my hands or on the deck.
That, was some awesome action. Fished one as a kid in Okauchee many times. The PopR was another one but Fred created that original same with the Spook and the Jiterbug. I used to love to put a small popper on my flyrod and fish the back bays for 1# fight like hell large mouth. I'm so pleased the Smallie is finally getting the attention the brozback deserves. I'm sure you remember watching Linder fish them. I was surprised you didn't do more in Sturgeon Bay with smallies being all over the place there. Or at least they used to be 20+ ago.
Great video ! Really enjoyed watching this one. It was both cool and odd seeing the Hula popper with 2 hi tech sonar in the back ground and being fished in a modern bass boat.
I couldn't catch anything with the original one for a long time and I gave this 2.0 a go - went crazy successful !! I ended up getting the exact same package as you showed here. Thanks ! :) and Ouch for the rod :(
I have a lot of great memories fishing the Hula Popper, thanks for the reminder. Back in the 70's I don't think you'd be able to find a tackle box without a Hula Popper in it. At least not in Michigan where I grew up. It's funny how some baits just fade into our memories, I guess many of us are looking for the latest and greatest bait. Thanks for reminding us that just cause it's an "old" bait doesn't mean it won't still catch bass. It may even be better now since fish likely don't see the Hula Popper much. I think I'll be pulling out the Hula Popper and while I'm digging in the bottom of my tackle box I will be grabbing a Jitterbug as well.
Cool intro.... modern day high tech Norman Rockwell moment there, sealed with the Matt Soothesayer voice.... all joking aside well done. Man... that lil river sure looks like a fun place to fish. Same here.... early memories of hula poppers as well. Of course when I was younger I made the mistake of letting plastic worms touch those rubber skirts.... ouch. Thanks for the vid, Finish in P1 this week.
I just got a vintage one at the big o fleamarket. Ordered a humdinger skirt, and rigged a big nose eye on the belly, and added a big feather 🪶 trebble on the belly. Go Matt 🎣.
I never really fished a Hula Popper. I have won the 6-9 Tuesday night scramble on my local lake with a Jitterbug! Late summer we are fishing in the dark and the Musky Jitterbug catches monsters at night!
You are clearly comfortable with those treble hook casts into the bank and cover. Sucks about that rod. One of my challenges here is bank angling on a high pressure kill river, but so few angles and opportunities to cast at the same bank I am walking.
Ha! I saw this pack on Lurenet or Tackle Warehouse clearance yesterday (don't remember which). Ordered a pack of them. I have a fondness for old school baits and the Hula Popper is one surface bait that I throw once or twice every year. It's still a killer.
The heddon torpedo is another old school lure I’ve caught a lot of smallmouth with. I’ve had a couple 30+ fish topwater days in rip rap canals way up north on foot.
I have been waiting for this video. Even better is to see Arbogast (Fred Arbogast back years ago) are still making them. So ok Matt..since your doing old school..next up The JitterBug!! Little web search Arbogast is still making them as well. Also in New colors! Your on a roll..Jitterbug! (Then show us your Jitterbug dance on your boat as well) 🤣
I really liked this video! That intro was probably the best you've done in what, it's been almost 2 years I've been watching you? I have an old school hula popper that has a live rubber skirt on it. I've used it a lot, but it's still in new condition because I've never caught a fish with it. Jitterbugs, hula poppers, devil's horses, I think they're all great baits. Have a great tournament, Matt! I'm seeing a top 20 finish for sure!
Nice casting ! My best largemouth was caught on a hula popper just this last summer. My local lake has produced a few state records but it's been fairly pressured as of late. I think this lure is proven and a little under the radar even though it's not a secret by any means. I'm gonna throw the white zombie color when the ducklings start hitting the water this spring.
I was going through some of your videos that might have missed & come across this one, love that river catching those small mouths nothing like, I need get some of those hula poppers, was wondering does that river flood? Also I really like these types of videos!
good on ya to do this one,@Matt Stefan. I run into alot of anglers that still incorporate the baits of old,as I look at a black Jitterbug that my neighbor gave me i sit on my desk.I have to keep in mind;not everyone is as into tackle as I am-nor sets aside the budget for it.#BassNostalgia
