    When the cameraman hollered to Keith "You only have nine seconds" I thought YES this is what I'm saying! Some of the streets in Grand Rapids can be six lanes to cross. I use a walker for balance mostly, but also for chronic pain. On days when the pain is bad, my pace is slow. If only there were a button to push for "elderly/disabled" mode that added 10 seconds. That would rock.

    • @moristulti9806
      @moristulti9806 4 года назад +210

      Marianne Wade, in Japan (people in Japan RESPECT their elders more) elderly people have a card that they carry around that can get them discounts and can add 10 extra seconds to the street lights. They should have this everywhere.

      I always bring this up to our city council etc. It's worked quite a few times in our favour. I'm normal and healthy, and I have to take a quick pace to cross in time. I see so many impatient drivers when they're trying to turn and the disabled/older person is still approaching the curb. It's scary and they could seriously be hurt, or worse. It's good to also get a petition going and find other residents who agree that an added 10 secs would only do the community good.

      I have POTS and stores are hard. I wish I felt comfortable in our society to use one of these carts, even on bad days where I’ll sit on the floor several times going through the story, I still won’t use a cart because of the dirty looks I get because physically I look like a healthy teenager

    • @JordanRambles
      @JordanRambles 4 года назад +181

      @@luxsarrazine1141 I have POTS as well. Also, lupus and fibromyalgia. I have to use the scooters in larger stores, when I have several things to pick up, or I risk passing out. It really sucks. And, I get the dirty looks, too. I've had a manager at a Walmart confront me about using the scooter, saying I shouldn't be using it, because it was for people who were "really disabled" and I look young and otherwise healthy. When I explained about my health concerns, her response was to call me fat and lazy, which prompted me to leave the store and never return.
      So, I totally get it. But, please, don't let the ignorance of such people shame you into pushing your body beyond its capabilities. Your comfort and safety are important, and they have no right to judge. We shouldn't have to defend our use of the scooters, but if anyone asks when I use them, I simply explain that not all disabilities are visible. It usually shuts them up pretty well. Don't let anyone make you feel bad about your condition. They simply don't understand and have no right to judge you. Stay strong

      You aren't alone. I was injured in a work place accident when I was 23 that was 8 years ago. I still look like I'm able bodied but ive had 4 back surgeries and I get about 100 shots from my head down to help control my pain levels every 2 months. Ive people follow me in to a store screaming at me for using a handicapped parking space. My back surgeon specifically asked me to use it in winter because if I fall the surgical repair would be brutal. I also get treated like shit because of my pain meds. Like pharmacist treat me like I should be in jail.

      Except, with all the places that are grandfather in, when trying to add an escalator, their a code update which makes it impossible b.c of being a complete remodel on a building, thus a building will not add an escalator. This is a common problem in the real world. If they can remove the code update for grand fathered in places, that will add more escalator. This is the main problem I face in my city.... 😑

    After an accident in 2009 I became disabled, and the differences I have found are relateable to your video, I have restricted movement and i cannot walk without help. I've become invisible to other people and can no longer do the things I once enjoyed. Please don't take your health for granted you may loose it way before old age (34 years old for me), The elderly seem to be the ones eager to help me when I am out which shows you the level of respect they have for everybody. Thanks for doing this video it shows how it is to be disabled as well as older.

      I was in an accident in 2012; I was only 15 when my doctor told me I had developed CRPS and would live in pain 24/7 for the rest of my life because of it. This video is a fun way to educate the public on how older age impacts the body, and how certain chronic conditions can also influence the body. I really hope they expand on this series.

Tho I gotta say, the most important thing I had to do as a disabled person was get over the idea that disabled is this horrible miserable thing to be. I felt like that all the time when I first got ill but as I've got used to things and made as much in my life accessible as I can, I don't feel much different to my abled peers most of the time and my mental health is much better!

    What Zach's grandma was saying about how it is a loss that was important, everyone who loses abilities or is disabled from birth is always expected to be super positive and to ignore what we've lost and that's just setting yourself up for failure. I have lost things when my fibromyalgia showed up I lost things almost overnight I can't do what I once could and many of the things I still physically can do cost me a lot more in the long run. Telling people that have lost things that they haven't lost things doesn't make our lives better

    • @smol-one
      @smol-one 2 года назад +7

      Well, generally people say stuff like that because they don't understand, or are trying to be polite or are uncomfortable. Personally, I'd probably tell you that it sounds like what you're dealing with sucks. Because while I don't understand it, I have been through other things. Sometimes you just want someone to acknowledge that it's bad, that it sucks.

      This. This so much. I was disabled at 14 and beforehand I was very active, multiple sports every year all year active, and I will never be able to be the person I thought I would be. I will never lead a normal life. And trying to ignore my disability does nothing but bring me pain. I have to accept that I will never be normal, and I have to give myself the space the grieve the life I will never have. But I am allowed to grieve it. I am allowed to be upset and angry. Pretending to be happy does nothing but make me feel alone.

But they don't understand that that fake positivity bull crap doesn't work and makes us feel dismissed. It's awful. I wish we as w society took more time to talk to and try to understand each other. I think it's happening more, I hope it continues. Everyone is suffering, and some it's harder to tell.
