Bayou should have left Willie Earl in that apartment with his prostitute. Then go down south to Georgia, gathered Leanne and their son Jonathan put them on the tour bus, then see his mom, Citsy, and everybody else at the Juke Joint. After he sang, he should've gotten to the bus quickly along with Ira and Ira should've driven the bus to a not so noticeable spot and wait for the band to finished performing, get them on the bus and head back north to Chicago, Illinois. If Bayou did it like that he wouldn't have been killed. He and Leanne would have been living happily ever after in Chicago with their son. If Jonathan was raised in Chicago, he probably would have been a civil rights activist for African Americans in that city.
I must say this has got to be one of THE best reviews I've seen on RUclips. I couldn't agree with anything you said more. I would add that Bayou's mama was a fool too. She wouldn't leave that town even though she was being harassed, torn apart from her sons, and driven into poverty? Every character in this movie was one dimensional with no relatable motivations. They all need a long talk in a dark corner.
@@whodatpytIn my opinion we did not need to understand why his mother did not want to leave, because IRL people do all kinds of things that don't make any sense at all. I would have left that ungodly place a long time ago tho 😂
@misshoneynevercame4832 true enough. People do dumb things that we don't understand all of the time. In my opinion, the best art helps us understand their motivations so we can take that insight back into our real world interactions. Here, it's just lazily introduced and we're just left with one dimensional characters. Would've loved to see them fleshed out more.
Me and my mom watch the movie yesterday. She had a hard time getting through it but we were in agreement that Leanne needed to leave Bayou the f*** alone. We kind of predicted where the story would go and I'm not trying to knock the writing skills cuz I can't write a screenplay. Apparently this was something Tyler Perry said that he wrote 27 years ago. so this is before Madea fame and everything else. Leanne was the one pissing me off the most Willie Earl and Leanne's Mama tied for second and honestly Bayou and his naivete really grinds my gears cuz this man's acting like he don't know what could happen but he's just so blinded by love that he can't just stay away. He either avoided the conflict and in the very end chose to embrace the conflict in the worst way possible. I feel like what was missing from the story was how did Hattie Mae go on after losing her son like that and what did Willie Earl and Leanne end up doing in between the time of Bayou's death and where the movie ends cuz we see Leanne still alive and obviously she's not over it but did she stay married to that dude. Clearly she never revealed her biracial Heritage cuz her own son thought he was completely white when actually he was of black descent from both of his parents. One last thing I know then I'm kind of rambling but I really do appreciate Tyler Perry giving new and unknown actors a chance to shine in what he considers a passion project because he's Tyler Perry at this point he could pick any well known actor to tackle these roles but the fact that he took a risk on new talents I appreciated that
Oh this was better writing from Tyler in my opinion. I definitely support him on exploring his talents and using less known actors. I found Bayou's actions in many cases to be unrelatable and while Leanne's desire to be with Bayou is understandable, her actions don't reflect it. Bayou, after all that time could have had another woman but we as the viewers we should see that he still desires Leanne. That happens quite often. This movie wasn't the most intriguing film to watch but kudos to Tyler. He does a couple more like this he skills as a writer will definitely improve. Thanks for the response and keep in mind you never "rambling" with me. I enjoy the convo!
Joshua Boone actually has been featured in the movies Fan Girl and Premature as well as acting 9n Broadway. The movie A Jazzman's Blue was definitely a good attempt for Tyler Perry to come out of the box of mediocrity but it left much to be desired. The beginning of the movie states 1987 but the decor and staging looked more like 1967 especially with that old TV that Hattie Mae turned off. The camera captured the baby doll used in Leanne's delivery and the doll was darker than the growing baby John. At the end Hattie Mae, Bayou's mother, looked younger than Leanne as did Leanne,'s own mother when she was talking to the adult John. The older Leanne also looked much lighter than the younger Leanne. In addition, the title should have reflected the love story and not a Jazzman's Blues. Back in the day a person was called a Jazzman because of their passion and desire to become a jazz musician or singer. However Bayou's passion was for Leanne. Bayou could care less about becoming a jazz singer. In fact he became a jazz singer by default because he was run out of town and forced into a car headed to Chicago to take his brother Willie Earl to an audition set up by a manger that Willie Earl talked into getting for him. If anyone was a true Jazzman it was Willie Earl. Bayou's brother was the one with the passion to become a Jazzman by bayou just became a jazz singer because he had to make a living and used what he did best. In my opinion the title in no way complimented the storylines. Bayou's Blues would have been better.
I honestly thought Bayou was a little slow in this movie. Leeann was equally slow because she consistently saw how dangerous the situation can be and even with Bayou mother warning her, this chic still wants to meet in secret locations that essentially is never secret 🤦🏾♂️. Man this movies irked the hell out of me.
Leanne (Ms. Bucket) wasn't slow. She was selfish. She liked the attention and knew that Bayou would follow her lead. Leanne being the one passing had more of an ability to move about as she pleased but instead she had Bayou sneaking around to see her. Even after Citsy and Hattie Mae told Leanne to leave bayou alone she didn't knowing that she could have him killed. She could have left her husband and went to Chicago to be with Bayou (put herself on the line) but she liked having the privileges that her passing afforded her.
Lol...I wouldn't call them slow, maybe inexperienced. Hard to judge them too much because a lot of how we see them is based on Tyler's writing and how he, himself portrays these characters in the story.
Yeah, if she truly loved Bayou she would have left him alone. Unfortunately a lot of people think like that. It's all about what they need and desire. True love dictates that we do whatever is necessary to protect the person we presume to care for.
This still paints bm in a negative way..so awestruck with lightskinned half white women he dies over her and he acts slow witted...you would be in a weak state too if your own father and brother mistreated you..all the other movies are stereotypical indeed but it shows the problems we have that we don't like to look at.
I can see your argument. I don't think Bayou's affections for Leanne stem from her being light skinned. She seems to be the only girl that would give him the time of day even after his success as a singer. He had a low self esteem, obviously so I can see how the character might take Leanne's advances to heart. It doesn't hurt that she looks beautiful, light skin or not...LOL I know plenty of brothers that have been mistreated and bullied...they actually turned out stronger because of it. It can go the other way too.
The Actress that portrays Ethel Lee is actually a Caribbean actress from the British West Indies, specifically Bermuda. Her dad Stan Young is Afro Bermudian and English European, while her mother Margaret Young is a White woman from Northern Ireland.
There's a lot that goes on in the world. There are a lot of brothas handling their responsibilities and loving their woman. Tyler's depiction of brothas for the most part seems to be negative in his movies. Not the case in every one of his films but enough to be alarmed about it
Both Horace John Boyd aka Bayou and Leanne Jean Harper aka Bucket are mixed race. Bayou's father Buster is Black and Hattie Mae is Mulatto. Willie Earl and Bayou are half brothers. Hattie Mae , a Mulatto, had Willie Earl with a White Man. So Willie is a Quadroon, but Buster raised him as his own child, that's why Willie calls Buster his dad. Leanne's parents are George Harper and Ethel Lee. George was a White Man and Ethel was a Quadroon. Ethel's parents were Red Lee, a Mulatto and her mom (whose name is not known) was presumably a White Woman. I believe Ethel's mother taught her to be a proper White woman and then eventually left her abusive drunken husband. Ethel was then repeatedly raped by her father and then eventually left her dad after giving birth to Leanne.
Just got done watching the movie. Enjoyed your review. I was thinking some similar things watching it. U had me laughing 🤣 thank you! Fuck Willie Earl and Leann Mom!!! 🤣🤣 can't stand them.. lol!!😂
I just saw this and...the timeline, character in the beginning walking for hours and then sitting in courthouse for hours...did she walk back to the slave house in 1987??
I was sympathetic 2 Bayou but after awhile I said dude got a death wish.i thought the African dance woman might take a liking 2 Bayou & it would convince him 2 move on

Bayou NEVER thought his brother would betray him. So sad.
Naw he should of left Leeanne alone a long time ago and damn sure should of never stepped foot in Georgia!!!

Some people are really tied to their home. Maybe her house was paid off. There could have been a lot of reasons why the Mom didn't leave.

Another thing I'll add is that the majority of Leanne's European American ancestry is of English, Scottish, and Irish heritage.
I say that because Georgia was part of the Thirteen Colonies aka British North America.
