The cast really did well with the language and embodying the time period, I though they had great chemistry as well

Just finished watching this movie and I cried before it finished 😢 The story was predictable due to the time in history but the acting was beautiful done. I love his movies they pulled at my heart. Especially I was front and center with human atrocities growing up in New Orleans.

I cried and cried and cried. As a white person it’s the tiniest window into a pain that my ancestors created and I am a still a part of because I can only humbly listen and actively help break down those systems that we still be benefit from and that still opress others.
I would of never thought this would of been her first movie she would was Oscar worthy.
For her first movie ever she did an extraordinary job . I was so angry with her I thought she was so weak and could have stop it stopping her mother stopping her freak ass grandfather by telling her truth and saving the love of her life. She sold it I was so mad at her. Good Job! Would definitely like to see what else can she do on the screen. Give her something with more grit.
I saw her portray Eliza, another heartbreaking role, in the First NationalTour of Hamilton. She's an amazing talent!

Bravo, loved every minute & there were times I wanted to jump in the movie & say “NO, HELP HIM!” HELP HER lol but a lot of the trauma each character had, needed to be, I wish there was 15/20 mins left of the movie! I was hooked every second!!!!

I could not stop thinking about it after watching. I loved the cast members; great casting! Love this movie, it was sad but made me think and appreciate my ancestors even more. Though this is not based on a true story; this is our story. Our families went through these struggles and much more and we are still here. Thank you for showing us! I hope they see us and stop trying to rewrite the ugly history but embrace it, own it and then change it. I love the ending where reality had to sit in. Truly your best work, MR. PERRY! I could go on an on.....

Tyler is my guilty pleasure filmmaker, this masterpiece blew me away! I loved it but it was very bittersweet for me, I'm even more sensitive emotionally due to being in a long distance relationship. One would think I lost the love of my life by the end of the film. 😭 I hope to watch it again one day..

I never heard of this film until this morning, I just finished it and I’m in awe! Definitely Tyler Perry’s best film to date, and it’s definitely trauma porn at the same time.
There’s an entire branch of my family that’s been passing as white for decades, obviously I’m from the visibly Black branch. I can only imagine how many times these stories existed within my own family. This story may be fiction but it’s absolutely an American Tale to be remembered.

Honestly, I've never been a fan of the TP movie genre and typically skip his movies. However, the trailer piqued my interest and decided to give it a try. I was pleasantly surprised to find that the movie was a refreshing departure from his typical Madea humor. It really showed a side of his directing skills that was deeper, richer and moving. The movie kept my attention and really made me think....

I feel you the love story was good but seeing the trauma parts and the sad ending is depressing. I want period piece movies that show our ancestors in a better light instead of being underdogs the whole time.
The plot and dialogue were outstanding. The true actors who made it feel most like a movie were Leanne, the drug addicted brother and I think her name was Cisy. You can tell this wasn’t their first rodeo. The others need some polishing but over all an awesome movie. Something was missing but I couldn’t put my finger on it. The lead male actor was handsome but was missing something. It seemed more like a play than a movie.
