A while back I made a video about rebuilding the transfer case on the X5 when it chews up the front axle shaft splines, but I wasn't able to film the step by step on it because it was very windy where the car was stranded plus I just didn't have time. Well... I had to redo the job because the transfer case was leaking! Arg. In this video series I will show you exactly why it leaked and exactly what not to do so that you don't get leaks if you ever change your chain or buy a new gear to transplant into your transfer case.
You should definitely look at my previous video for more details on sealing up the transfer case properly plus information about the chain:

Just finished replacing the driveshaft spline in my 2003 X5 and sprung for a rebuilt transfer case off eBay for $650. Did the job myself in the driveway. Took me a few days, but totally doable by yourself and saved so much $$$. This video was a great help in completing the job successfully. Thanks 50sKid!
Hopefully this going to help me with my X5,i have exact model and exact problem.
I'll give you an update when I finish it next week.
Did u fix it
Great Job! I like watching you using power impact tool...saves time and makes work more enjoyable.

For your oil pan gasket, there are three E10-Torx bolts to the rear: 23001222887 M8X50 ASA E10-Torx Bolt - 21 Nm (15 ft-lb). Do these up last after doing the 25 sump bolts in a Z-pattern.
your channel should be blowing up You Tube...
With the transfer case on the car. Is there a way I can check the chain without taking it out
When you say to redo the front axle do you mean front differential or do you mean the cv axle?
Awesome video! Thanks for sharing! Has anyone got a link to brand new gears? I'd rather not replace with a worn one if possible! Thanks!
Thanks 50sKid. Excellent video! Are you planning to do a video on replacing the timing chain guide?
Yes
Looking forward to that video. Thank you sir!
Hi my car is acting weird , sometimes when I am in traffic feels like something jumps when on when I press the gal pedal also when I am going in the highway at high speed , what could it be , you think is the transfer case
thanks.
Great work, can i ask you, where are you having your garage?
What was the fluid that used to fill the transfer case with?
What brand is that Impact wrench ?
wow good video. I have a 07 x3 i am have problem. my 4×4 light and abs and brake lights come on .so i look it up and people are saying that its my transfer case gear so got a new gear and the lights are still on what do you think is my next step is .thanks for time
Read the errors from the computer using a bmw scan tool so that you actually know what the problem is.

I think your problem was the Transfer Case Actuator Motor Gear.
What fluid can I use for the transfer case ?
Armando Hilario Only use OEM BMW DTF 1 fluid in the Transfer Case
Thanks
1 liter is enough?
Armando Hilario You should get two 1 liter bottles. If you’ve never changed the fluid, the new stuff you put in will still come out black. Use some of the first bottle to flush out the old stuff and the second one to top it off.
We all make mistakes, and nice to see an honest DIY video which highlights the seal folding over and leaking. I had same problem, but instead of pulling whole unit out again, which is a ton of work, you can actually back off dust shield which exposed seal, and because it is so pliable, you can actually insert a pick tool to reposition the seal properly in only a couple minutes. I used the same pick tool to fix transmission axle seal which also was out of position when changing axle shaft. Thanks again.
