Joy DID learn from the first movie, she learned to appreciate the values of Sadness and the other primary emotions. But I can imagine new emotions (Anxiety, Embarrassment, Envy, and Ennui) being somewhat new territory and stressful for Joy. Furthermore, Joy was actually very welcoming to the new emotions at first, but it's when they challenged Joy's--and to an extent the old emotions' as well as Riley's--beliefs...it's just another character flaw she needed to learn by the end of the sequel.

    • @OdogRuby77

      Welchy's Opinion:
      Anxiety: Piss Off
"We love ALL of [Riley]": That's good.
(Small tangent: ALL of Riley includes Anxiety! ALL feelings are valid. For example, my Anxiety may prevent me from having an actually feasible social interaction with someone, but it doesn't mean that I'm a horrible person. Sure I may believe that sometimes, but I don't dwell on it except in certain moments. With Anxiety, it's like Sadness all over again, she was just trying to do her job, but it was like Joy, whereas both characters went about it the wrong way yet still had good intentions! For her, imo, it's live and let live. Btw, you can't KILL emotions because they are a part of you, good and bad, best and worst.)

I've struggled with anxiety for majority of my life, so I already knew the movie was going to make me cry, but hearing that really got to me. Growing up I asked myself whether or not my anxiety would ever go away and if I'd ever get over it. It made me miserable. I'm glad this movie does it justice, not only explaining but also displaying just how overwhelming and powerful anxiety can be for a person, and also how much it plays into your life and the decisions you make because of it.

I have a theory, regarding Riley's specific anxiety surrounding having no friends in high school. I wonder if the news that her friends were gonna be in a separate high school from her, sparked some trauma in her. In the first film, Riley had to move away from Minnesota a place of which she knew all of her life, to be more specific she had to leave her childhood friends behind when she move to LA. Perhaps Riley being separated from her friends in high school though different in places felt similar to that part of her past, hence being immensely triggered from it.

I'm more curious what her shape is supposed to be. Iirc the original set were all based on a different base shape, and it's clear Anxiety has one as well. Anger is a brick, Fear is a nerve, Anxiety is a frayed piece of string (or rather, a frayed nerve), Joy is a star, Disgust is broccoli, Sadness I think is a tear but I forget for sure. I think the fact that almost everyone who's watched this movie sided with anxiety initially proves that anxiety IS a necessary emotion, in moderation.
Just like excessive sadness is unhealthy, or excessive anger - hell, even excessive joy can be harmful (mania leading to poor impulse control, for example) - excessive anxiety is harmful, for obvious reasons. But we also need that emotion to help us plan ahead, or double-check.

@@Welchy it was funny how you still didn't want Anxiety to join the hug the end tho. Relatable. Actually this film made me realise how anxiety really doesn't help at all. I know that seems obvious yet so many of us entertain it and some are even crippled by it. We allow it because we think it's protecting us, just like the film shows, and when you're overwhelmed by the emotion it's hard to see that the emotion is not the primary cause, it actually comes after your thought. So it's really about slowing down and observing the thought, does thinking that benefit me? Can I think/ focus on another thought? In my experience getting trapped in a thought, emotions, anxiety is because in the moment it feels like it's happening to you and don't have a choice. If you can calm the mind, you do eventually see you have a choice (like in the film). You put it so well...Riley gets to choose. Anyway, thanks for the amazing reaction, you're hilarious as always!

6:28 school assignments are based on zones in America, but when a population is expanding and schools get overcrowded new schools have to be opened and the zones get redrawn. It doesn’t happen every year, but it’s very possible to end up at a different school than many the people you’ve spent your younger years with. Happened to me in middle school and in high school, new schools opening up causing a redrawing of district lines, but in my school district, they only opened new schools with students entering their first year at that level. So, the middle school only started with 7th graders (I was in 8th at the time) and the new high school started with only 9th and 10th grade (I was in 11th). They did make an effort to avoid students having to switch schools in the middle of their education, but transitions between the tiers could be rough as friend groups could be disrupted based solely on geography.

@will_o_wisp i think it was a good choice to make envy into a small cute child-like creature. to be able to accept your own envy and know, that it is just the child inside of you wanting anything that's nice.

The more I watch this, the more I feel that her best friends were so inconsiderate. The pair of them had no stakes during the camp, but they didn't think about the stakes for Riley. She had to basically rebuild her social network and also a chance to impress the team at the new school they weren't attending. They should know how much hockey meant for Riley beyond a hobby

    In moderate amounts, anxiety can:
Improve performance: It helps keep you alert, focused, and motivated, especially in situations like exams, work deadlines, or competitions.Signal potential problems: Anxiety can act as an early warning system, prompting you to address issues or prepare for future challenges.Enhance decision-making: By making you more cautious, it can help you evaluate risks and make better choices in uncertain situations. However,
excessive anxiety can be harmful, so it’s important to manage it effectively when it becomes overwhelming.

this movie hits so hard man. definetly agree, not for kids. like i wonder what a kid would take away from this. ofcourse not the hard hitting message adults would but i think it still gives a messageof mindfullness and self acceptance teenagers or pre-teens need. i love how they made joy likable like HOLY, from unsufferable to lovable. very good arc.

My parents forced me to constantly stress about the future and only pick "important" friends. Then my mom regretted it when i was in my late 20s - because all of that Anxiety only caused me health issues and didn't help at all. And the longest lasting friend since we were 12 until our 30s, was
the one who never went to my high school....

I cried in Part 1 and more-so in this one when anxiety took over because I’ve suffered from it for years and still do and my oldest daughter does as well. I’ve honestly never really tried to fit in or be fake and was always true to myself because I knew that no matter what I would never be alone in life, which is why I have so many positive people around me.

When her friends waited until the last possible moment to tell Riley, I was so mad for her that the rest of the story felt like it had no conflict. "Oh no, she might choose the firehawks over her friends! What a dilemma!" ....no? Her friends didn't seem to care too much about Riley's feelings, they probably wouldn't even have told her until the end of camp if she hadn't caught the change in facial expression. I was completely fine with her blowing them off, they already did the same. (This is why i have no friends from my childhood. Don't be like me)

Year after year they keep making films that just stab straight into the heart. And worst part is as a kid you cry for one reason but when you go back and rewatch the film as a teen or adult you cry for a whole another reason.

I'm 30+! and this movie is helping me deal with my anxiety better than any pill I suffer with crippling anxiety and seeing the panic attack was too real for me when anxiety is going that fast that there is just a after image of her because when you in that state you freeze while at the same time your brain in going 1000 mph I'm now telling myself when I feel anxiety coming on "can I control that now is there anything I can do?" if the answer is no then take a deep breath and wait and see and its all because of this movie also when joy said she doesn't know how to stop anxiety and maybe this is what happens when you grow up you feel less joy omg my heart hurt when she said that
Inside Out 3 i think they should try grief there is a lot of us out there that supress grief and don't know how to handle it would be great to teach not just kids but us adults too how to deal with one of the rawest of emotions
