I was just going to watch one of your old videos as a refresher on how to make a proper class and discover you just posted a guide 7 hours ago! WE SAIL FOR THE KINGDOM OF DAGGERFALL!!!
Thank you for this guide. I've seen some growing interest in Daggerfall lately and I love it. DF is one of my fav games of all time since 1996. The atmosphere, music and the mechanics in the game are soothing. I've been watching your DF content since the beginning (original Dosbox version with the lovely sound FX bugs and 12+ hours videos) . Planning to rewatch your Whispers in Shadow, Sas-i runs. Continue whatever you are doing and never change (love the occasional salt mining).
its funny how nowadays we have the abitlity to play games that are near life like in graphics but honestly I couldnt care less. I would rather play daggerfall with Morrowind graphics, hell just how it is vanilla is fine to me. The game just has a lot of content to it. I mean yeah you need to use your imagination quite a bit but thanks to the unity version a lot of variation and graphical enhanced sprites make the game up to modern standards. Top tier game in my book.
Thank you for this!!!! I've started playing Morrowind because of you, and always love catching a stream of yours! You're a great person and I love your vids! Thanks for your commitment to helping people get into these great games; you're 1 of 1!!
sick video dude yet again you prove yourself to be the definitive source for getting into these games as a new player. i still remember finally breaking through on daggerfall because of the old video you made before DFU existed.
Bro I was just thinking about playing this game again, I type Daggerfall into the RUclips search bar, and the first thing that pops up is a 9 hour old video from Zaric? Based.
Even though I know (almost) all the things you've spoken of here... for some reason, I loved hearing you gab it about it anyway! Great video, and you gave some great recommendations. Cheers!
Very nice Zaric, really appreciate your effort put into the guide and taking the time to organize it. Updated new player guides for older games are low in supply
Ha, Ironic Zharic. I was just watching your older Daggerfall Videos a week or so ago and decided to give it a try again and now you go and upload this. Much appreciated. -
Zaric... love your stuff. Recently got into DF in large part to your older start guide and - I love this game... thank you for helping get my foot in the door! I've listened to most of your other stuff at this point too. All hail the GOAT. Lol also - Climbin that big ass mountain and X WING guy - "Allllmooosttt, there..... Allmosssst There...."
love the advantage/disadvantage system, since I never bother with magic, I disable generation of it in light and dark, and get immunity to paralysis and disease, two of the most annoying afflictions
I'd advise any Elder Scrolls fan to give this a go. Daggerfall is actually easy to get into with the fixes. You can download beautiful textures too if that is your thing.
I love the fact that you’re still making these guides. Daggerfall, along with Morrowind, are the TES games that have captured me the most in recent years, each for completely different reasons. Hopefully guides like yours will help get more people into it.
I had way more problems getting into Daggerfall than getting into Arena. Thank you for helping us new players get into the game. My question would be, what's the worst, hardest and most difficult class in the game?
If you can use restoration, get the critical weakness to paralysis, then get the free action spell. It’s the cheapest spell to cast and it completely neglects paralysis.
I remember thinking what amazingly large games we'd have one day when playing this, with more unique places. Still waiting. D: There are excellent more modest attempts, but for single player rpgs I don't know if anything since made the true attempt of full interconnectivity + size. Also climbing, still so rare and ever since this game I've always wanted it just for rp feels. I never came close to finishing this game - an orc warlord got stuck in a wall, and then my save got corrupted. I should probably give the modern way a go. :)
I wish there were more Daggerfall guides on the platform, like a werewolf and vampire guides, for example, it’s a great game, but without much video content out there
For people allergic to pixels there is also DREAM mod that replaces the textures but its not for everyone's taste, some enemies look blurred with the upscaled textures but the environments are beautiful.
Just finished my first quest in gaersmith orchard looking for werewolf blood, was lost for hours but eventually figured things out, only for the quest giver to say that i could have brought a fresher sample and that the quality of initiates was lower still got paid though but for the trouble that whole adventure was not worth just 200 gold, atleast the loot made up for it.
I'd never fault someone for going back and playing old games (especially enhanced versions) to experience the context, but I feel like Daggerfall has to be the MOST influential game that has become completely irrelevant in the modern day. Everything good that Daggerfall did has been done much better (more of it in games like Minecraft and DayZ than in other RPGs) and the stuff that is still unique to the game, like language proficiencies, abilities like climbing, or the fracturing of stuff like stealth and charisma into different TYPES of stealth or charisma, are all completely shallow, one dimensional, specific use cases. People tend to mod this game to put new mechanics and methods of interacting with the world, but what Daggerfall really needs to be a fulfilling and unique experience is a world that appreciates the breadth of it's skill and simulation systems. A reason to climb over town walls or onto balconies, dragons or orcs to talk to that aren't just ways to avoid combat encounters, separate side-quest lines for people invested in Streetwise vs. Etiquette, etc. All this is to say if you try Daggerfall and you don't like it, it's not because you're not "hardcore" enough or you need games "dumbed down" for you, Daggerfall just kind of sucks. This coming from a guy who has MAXIMUM nostalgia, my dad used to bring me into his office on Fridays and let me play Daggerfall on his computer while he was in meetings, because his home PC had no hope of running it.
Thaks for the updated video, Zaric! I saw you'd made an updated Morrowind video so I was going to comment on another video asking if you'd do one for Daggerfall...but I guess I didn't even have to ask. I'd actually just downloaded Unity + the basic modlist you made for recommended new players from the old video yesterday. Looking through some of your other mod loadouts for Daggerfall playthroughs, does Travel Options supersede the Tedious Travel mod you'd recommended back in 2020?
Go to the Advanced settings in the Daggerfall Unity launcher and increase the FOV to max. If that doesn't work, download Eye of the Beholder and Auto-Sight mods for Daggerfall Unity and try playing the game in Third Person Mode.
You gave me Morrowind (i.e. taught me how to play it) and restored my faith in Bethesda RPGs after Oblivion kicked my behind in 2006. Thank you. I will watch the whole video. Full disclosure, I also played Skyrim right after Morrowind, and as it turns out, they figured out how to do level scaling.
I have a question. Does the busted spell absorption class still work in Unity, or does it require the exploits mod? Thank you for your help, and thank you for this awesome video.
Mechanically? No not really. In terms of World-building? Yes, because they have about a paragraph of explanation as to why you are doing the things you do.
Pretty sure in Vanilla Daggerfall agility doesnt actually matter much, since it's a d100 system and not d20. Even elven weapons have a +10 to hit chance, and daedric has +60
The overt goal for a new player is to not be miserable at the start. Unless you are very lucky with RNG early on, by the time you getting Daedric Weapons, your skill level is high enough to carry you through most anything. There's a power threshold that I talk about, once you cross it not too much matters anymore.
No clue. I will say though It really, REALLY depends on what mods you are using. A graphics overhaul like Dream will balloon your system requirements greatly. Likewise by turning down the resolution and graphics settings in the launcher like view distance, and then pausing the game mid-play and clicking the box in the top left corner you can set the game into Retro Rendering mode. All of that together can reduce the system requirements.
When Wayward Realms comes out, there would be no reason to play Daggerfall. Wayward Realms map size is 50 percent bigger, and with top notch modern graphics. Alpha version is late 2025, last time the developers talked about it.
Spiritual Successors are rarely, if ever entire replacements. Developers usually take an idea from their source and vastly improve on it, but that requires casting other things aside as design direction shifts. I think we should be optimistic toward Wayward Realms, however I've been around long enough to know not to count your chickens before they hatch. Proof will be in the result, not in prematurely tearing down potentially fun experiences people can have right here and now.

What's funny is the game came with a guide on how to take the shortest path to the exit in the first dungeon.
