- Leela Samson is among India's most dynamic and technically brilliant dancers, an outstanding representative of Kalakshetra, the famed institute for the classical arts founded by the late Rukmini Devi Arundale on the Chennai ocean front. Leela joined Kalakshetra as a young child and her formative years were spent in imbibing the nuances of Bharata Natyam and related arts at the feet of celebrated gurus. Over years of independent work, her dance has metamorphosed from the best of her alma mater into an exquisite personal expression.
Leela's performances are popular all over India and many countries of Europe, Africa and the Americas. Her personal style is unostentatious, serene and characterized by an impeccable technique that blends geometrical precision with vibrancy and an unfettered ease. Her rhythmic acumen is apparent in dance compositions containing varied and challenging percussion patterns.
Leela has choreographed a number of group and solo compositions in Bharata Natyam. One of her major choreographic productions, Spanda, was performed to high critical and audience acclaim and hailed as a seminal work. She has trained many accomplised students who are now teachers in their own right. She has authored several articles as well as the book, Rhythm in Joy.
Among the many honours conferred on her, Leela Samson was awarded the prestigious Padmashri by the President of India in recognition of her outstanding contribution to the art of Bharata Natyam as well as the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award instituted by the apex cultural body of the Government of India.
She is at present (as on 2008) is the Director of Kalakshetra, Chennai, founded by Rukmini Devi Arundale and also the Chairman of Sangeet Natak Akademi.

Leela Samson's Varnam is astonishing. She was trained at Kalakshetra by no less Two Sharadas and Athai (Rukmini Devi). Her Varnams are archival value for coming generations. Hats off to Leela mam.
When I see some of the younger generation, their performance looks like gym exercise. It is not dance, they are not telling the story and they have no contact with audience with their emotionless faces. It is just sad to watch them. Leela Samson on the other hand is a classical dancer and these videos are a joy to watch.
Dikhti hi kidhr hai auditorium me audience bdi bdi lights lga dete
simply no flow of dance in their bodies to the music
Madam your choice of musicians is great ! Your are among the most beautiful people we have today ! A true deciple of the great Rukmini Devi...Most faithful to her values spirit & aesthetics. Splendid
i think the audio is lagging in all of your videos.
+Nikita Rao You're right that it's not perfect. These are archival videos so we didn't have control on them when they were shot! Our more recent work is prolific and technically competent! Do view our music and dance videos from a more contemporary period! Thanks.

What is the name of the song
You are so beautiful Madam ! Thank You Thank Thank You ! For Just Being Yourself !
can anyone tell me the name of the first song that is sung here? the tune sounds melodious.
I'm not sure what you mean? The whole song is one piece called "Manavi chekona." it's a popular varnam for Bharatanatyam composed by the Tanjore Quartet.
+Burning Flame ok, I thought it was a medley of two separate songs. thank you so much.
+pulavan k My pleasure.
I'm not sure if you listen to much Bharatanatyam music, but I think I know what misled you. Most dance varnams can be roughly divided into two halves. In the second half, beginning with the charanam, the tempo suddenly increases so the dancer finishes with a bright, exciting taalam. Here the charanam begins with the line "Pan ta mela ra nato," ('Don't show this anger towards me.').
