AVANTI West Coast FIRST CLASS Edinburgh to Preston - is it up to scratch?

- It's a TRIP REPORT episode and I'm trying out AVANTI West Coast FIRST CLASS from Edinburgh down to Preston.
The UK West Coast mainline has, for many years, been a Virgin operation. They recently lost their franchise to Avanti West Coast.
Join me on this trip on one of their Class 390 Pendolino trains. Check out the First Class seats and meal and drinks service.
And I'll tell you a little story about the "Pendolino Pong" a problem these trains have had over the years which not seems to have been fixed.

The Pendolino pong you mentioned was also a problem on the cross country voyager trains so I’ve heard

I live in Preston and used to travel a long way on trains but not first class. One Saturday in 2008 I went up to Glasgow, then a train from Queen Street to Edinburgh arriving just before noon.Then on a GNER Intercity 125 that started in Aberdeen that arrived in Edinburgh at 12:30 all the way to London Kings Cross stopping only at Newcastle and York taking 4 1/2 hours. No time to wander around London that day, only the short walk to Euston and back to Preston.

Pendelinos 20 years old, that makes me feel old, I still think of them as new. Another good video though
I know - they were definitely ahead of their time. The Azumas don’t look much different even though they are a newer design! 😀

I'm looking forward to seeing one of the refurbished units - though I guess it will be a while before there's a good chance of getting on one. I can't believe they are 20 years old! 😀

If you had a choice Roger, would you rather go on an TPE Nova 2 or a Pendolino between Preston & Edinburgh Waverley?
+JosephJJolly Hey - because of the pandemic I haven’t been able to travel in a Nova 2 yet. They do look great. But how comfortable are the seats? Hopefully we can get back to travelling again soon! 😊
Quick question for ye, what are they currently running? Trans pennine Preston to Edinburgh? I can see it’s the slower option than Avanti?

So is the service any better or worse than it was under Virgin?
I thought the menu was more extensive but it’s still the same staff and the same trains so it didn’t feel any different to be honest. ☺️

Is food included in First Class or is it an extra cost?
On most mainline UK services food in First Class is included. During the pandemic the offering has been restricted to drinks and sandwiches, but I believe full hot meals are coming back this autumn. 😀

Nope. Nothing can replace that Virgin.
No they are truly awful!! Please bring back Virgin ASAP!!

+HBB Spotter I went back the following day on TPE (and there’s a video) - but didn’t get a Nova unfortunately!
@@RogEdwardsTV ah same I got Is it the class 800 to Manchester airport and got of at Preston to go back to Blackpool
So after paying 3 times, all you get is a meal and beer? Normal coaches too have good seats, table and sockets. Doesn't seem like an experience at all.
Cheers! Since I made this video Avanti have started to refurbish the Pendolinos. The difference between the standard and first seats might be greater now - though I have yet to try them as they’ve only converted a small number of trains so far. 🚅

A think avanti is ok but there idea of a 3rd class that has a 3 2 layout is mad

I don’t even know how they will fit them or get people to sit in them it’s meant to be like a premium eco but it has a smaller seat then there eco
Jimbob They’d have to rename Standard as Premium Economy and call the 3x2 Standard Economy. No way premium could be worse than standard.
Roger Edwards Marketing TV it’s mad there basically selling the normal seats for extra and putting everybody else in bad seats I don’t think it’s worth it and I’ll most likely use other company’s when possible
