[GL][T-140] TWILIGHT OF THE HIGH HOODS (Locomotives of Today's Class 1s) | Trains 21

- High hood diesels were common on railroads in the 1950s into the 1960s when low short hoods became the fashion.. Norfolk Southern's predecessor roads N&W and SOU continued to buy high hood into the 1980s and many remain on the roster to this day....

Fifty years from now our kids, and grand kids will see our time as the golden age of diesels, and locomotives operated by on board human crews, as trains in their day will be pulled by fully computer controlled drone locomotives, with no cabs, and powered by electric/hybrid/fuel cells, or what ever futuristic power, and propulsion systems they come up with.
Plus by that time there will only be two class one railroads serving the country. The Union Pacific will buy out the Norfolk & Southern, and absorb it, retaining the Union Pacific name, like their previous mergers, and the BNSF will merge with the CSX creating the BNCSX.
I'm just kidding with my fake prophecy, and don't expect anything I posted to come to pass the way I said it, but with all the mergers, technical advances, and changes the railroads have dealt with since the transition period between steam to diesel, I think anythings possible.
Indeed.. Thanks for the prophecy, and yes, anything is possible.
High hoods have always been and still are my favorite diesel locomotives.
by 2020 it will probably be RIP to the Legends of Railroading. im gonna miss seeing those high hoods.
Yeah.
Absolutely love Hi-hood SD and GP-9s. those are my favorites especially if they are in SP colors
Same here.
That’s what I’m modeling in N scale, SP and all!
I've seen that ex-Conrail 5460 running by my grandparents' old place once or twice.
Nice.
O M G I loved High Hoods, they were the Work horse for railroads. It was so sad them gone or used as a trailing unit or nose chopped. thank you Train 21 for the awesome memories when I was a kid :-)
You're welcome.
Don't get me wrong, I love the low hoods, but the high hoods a great too. It's a shame the high hoods don't get enough love.
Understood.. But the high hoods have bad visibility.
@@Trains21 true. The high hoods do only give one a certain vision range and radius. Nevertheless, that's why even the diesels need a fireman on the other side right? :)
@@kaijufan6246 That was the logic at SOU from what I've been told.
@@Trains21 Always good to travel in pairs right?
I love High-Hoods and I'll really miss seeing them go even if I've never seen one.
Understood.
I didn't know that EMD made high hood sd40.....Learn something new every day.......Again a great video
Thanks Ken.. Yep, they made high hood SD45s and SD35 too as high hoods.
@@Trains21 Just never seen any here in the great white north
@@kenkirkland1056 Understood.. It was mostly a southern U.S. thing.. Also had high hood GP50s now that I think about it.
@@Trains21 Would have been a nice loco to see running down the rails
@@kenkirkland1056 They were nice to look at in action, Conrail people hated them though.. Back in the 1990s, Canadian Pacific bought a couple of former NS high hood SD40-2s.. They painted them all red (including the windows) and used them as solely B-units.. Look it up.
I love the high hood locos, I don't know why, I just do.
Understood.
I tell you, I never gave the high hood units a second thought until I got my first Athearn SD9E in HO Scale. They do look interesting and seem to be a cross culture from low/chopped noses and the wide cabs.
Thank you for posting and for all your hard work chasing down these classics!
You're very welcome.
For me, I grew up in a small Texas town that the Santa Fe/BNSF runs though. They had a CF7 + slug work the yard most the time, the yard is still there tho greatly down sized. I have always found the high short hoods unusual and it wasn't till I was much old that I learned the truth about it. Over the years I have come to appreciate what the high hood represents and how they played a roll in the history of railroading.
Some other strange locos I remember seeing as a kid, F/FP-45s SD-40/45s in the SF Kodachrome, and some all blue SD-40/45 B units that really stood out. I miss seeing cabooses too, always a friendly crew to wave at ya.
Thanks for the memories.
Only high hood SD40-2's on NS are ex-NW. All the SOU ones have been rebuilt with a low short hood
OK thanks.
I know I have some video with NS locomotives with high short hoods. I think they were crossing the International Bridge from Buffalo to Fort Erie back in 2012, 13 or 14. Now I have to check. Excellent video AC.
Thanks Hans.. Hopefully I'll see them on your channel.. BTW, good video today with the CP oil cans.. Didn't wanna wear out my welcome so I didn't comment on it.
@@Trains21 You'll not wear your welcome one bit. One of the videos is"38's & 40's @ Fort Erie May 9 2014". One of the GP38's has a high hood. I'm sure I've caught more.
@@iusetano Thanks Hans.. I'm sure you've caught more too.. They were pretty common on NS up till recently.
@@Trains21 Also "Bison Bound" April 6 2014
@@iusetano Nice, now you gotta get em' up on your channel.
High hoods are my favorite locomotives! As always, awesome video! Shame to see hood units getting chopped noses
Agreed!
@@Trains21 I know if I see a low nose GP9 I should be grateful just to be looking at a GP9, but it just doesn’t have soul anymore.
Love the high hoods, lets hope NS don`t convert them all and leave a few as they are, Great video A.C!
Regards
Kev
Thanks Kev, but I think that you're wishing on a star.
Great info, AC. Thanks so much. - Drew
You're welcome, Drew.
I operated a couple of NS high nose hoods. I didn't realize how few were around.
Forgot to mention, companies like N&W and SOU stuck to High Hoods to bypass a rule in the 70's that said a locomotive with 4 windows on one end (the Low Nose units) must lead low nose out. Some bypassed it so they didnt have to worry about the rule nor worry much about rotating locomotives
Thanks Man.. I didn't know that.
I'd love to see high hoods running up here. NS sold a high hood SD40-2 to CP and they just patched it still in the NS black. CP #5484 (formerly Southern and NS #3253, now NREX #3048) and CP #5485 (Formerly Southern and NS #3254, became NREX #5485. It was wrecked in Momence, Illinois in 2005). That was when they were very power short, so they bought former UP, KCS and NS power and just patched them. They even had a few former Guilford units running around on the roster! As always, great informative video buddy! :)
Thanks Canadian.. CP did paint at least one of their ex-NS high hood SD40s in the Two-flag scheme I remember.
@@Trains21 They painted former Southern and NS high hood SD40-2's #5475 to 5483 into the dual flags scheme, with the exception of 5475 who didn't have the flags applied. They were all turned into B units.
@@realcanadianrailfan110 Yep, that's right.
Buckingham Branch RR in VA has some high hoods, but are converting them in the near future.
Thanks, Man.. Hopefully, I can get back to Keysville (if that's where it's at) again before it's converted.
I just saw one of the NS units in Camden NJ a week ago working a port on the Delaware River.
Miss the roomie “crew relief room” of the high hoods, now it’s an injury waiting to happen every time you gotta crawl into the low nose.
Understood, I've been in both!
High hoods have always been my favorite style of Locomotive, it's sad to see them finally biting the dust
Yeah
I know there are a coupl ns high hoods in jackson Michigan that are remote controlled and used on the locals
Nice.. I've seen the low hoods on some videos but not the highs.
the first high hood I ever saw was a GP9 switching in Fairfax OH. I think it was a Pensy... or maybe a B&O. We were right across the street and I was probably 9 or 10. It was massive!
That's gotta be a heck of a memory to hold.. thanks for sharing it.
Sole survivor on Pan Am is GP40 380. Catch 'em while you can.
That's right.. Thanks for the info.
One of my favorite Trains 21 episodes... Catchy music too.
Most of the high hoods I rode on as a brakeman for the SP back in the day were Alco's. I saw a few high hood Southerns at the Hardy Street yard in Houston back in the long long ago.
I'm very fond of their "Cadillac" SD9s.. Never got to see any in person sadly.. Saw pretty much everything SP had on their roster back in the early 1990s when I lived next their mainline in San Antonio, TX.. BTW, I wasn't able to finish the video with the train on the wye so it'll be a few more days.
I saw an SD40-2 high hood on the Norfolk southern a few weeks ago in Fostoria
Nice.. I hope you recorded it.. Only 10 left on NS.
I did record it and it’s on my RUclips channel
@@romanrailfan392 OK. I'll check it out.
I love high hoods saw the Norfolk Southern research train sitting in bristol virginia yard today with it's high hood unit
I do believe some are still hanging around shared assets in Camden. Pavonia yard. Not sure about shared assets up here near me in Browns yard in Sayerville.
Cool.. I don't know exactly how many are left but I know that there aren't more than 10 of the SDs.. Many more of the 38s with high hoods still running around.. BTW, glad to see that you're still hangin' out with us on this channel.. Good to hear from you.
Last time I went past brown's it was all CSX.
Very interesting....loved the narrative
Thanks James.
Awesome video i know of four high hoods working around Cincinnati which are three are gp38s and one sd40
Nice!! Particularly the SD40.. Hopefully I can get out there and catch it before it's gone.. Thanks for the info.
@@Trains21 no problem the sd40 thats here is 1632 and works in sharon yard in sharonville ohio to give you the heads up
@@cnichting08 Awesome thanks.
@@Trains21 you are welcome
Very interesting to see these still in use in the US. British Rail had two very small and short lived classes of this layout, Class 15 and Class 16. Neither was a success and they only lasted a few years, barely long enough to receive BR Blue livery. I think a solitary Class 15 is under restoration at the East Lancs Railway.
Thanks for giving us a perspective on railroading in your corner of the world.
Get your shots of them soon! NS may be purging/rebuilding the rest!
They are
I absolutely love high hood locomotives!
Me too.
As a kid I got to watch CB&Q/C&S HIGH HOOD SD-7 & SD-9 locomotives pulling long trains through my home town of Berthoud, Colorado. With their gyrating headlights and heartbeat changing loud dual exhaust, they were impressive machines. Singly or mated to EMD SD-45 and GE U-Boats,(Usually SD-7, SD-45, U-Boat, U-Boat, SD-9.), they pulled short locals and 80-110 car freight trains, always proudly wearing their Blackbird or Chinese Red paint schemes. An excellent video. Hello from the Tracy Mountain Railway in Colorado, which still has many High Hood locomotives in service. ♡ T.E.N.
Wow.. Thanks for sharing those memories.. I'll have to get out to Colorado maybe in 2020.
Long Island rail road had Alco C420 s up until around 2000 . The Cc420 s were used on passenger trains until 1976 or 1977
Look up HRT 5130 and you might see one of my videos the included HRT 5130. (Exx-Southern, ex- Norfolk Southern) I only saw high hoods on NS a few times
I will, thanks.
Nice tune
Thanks Larry.
Something that seems to be none existent is, information on whats in those highhood, and pictures of inside those highhoods.
Toilets, if they had them.. If not, usually empty space.
I Remember in Fostoria Ohio the HIGH HOOD Local SD40-2 Switching the Area she might still be around , let me know,Thanks for the History C&OGUY
Thanks for the info and the memories Michael.
The problem with high hoods/ long hood forward is visibility. Just like the steam trains, the engineer can't see anything on the opposite side from where he's sitting. That can be an issue with modern day signalling systems where a signal is not always on the engineer's side of the right of way.
The SOU's and NW's logic was (as I was told) was that it was for crew protection and the conducter provided left side visibility.. Though I agree with your logic, nice to look at.. Bad to run them.
The only high hoods I liked on the NS are the SD40/SD40-2s running long hood forward pulling trains thru Erie,PA. Some were sold to CP back in the 90's and they were repainted and made into trailing or B units. Thought those looked cool. I hate the 4 axles tho as they have become the staple of Conrail Shared assets in South Jersey, my old home, and got rid of the Ex-PC GP38s. Loved those old chattering GP38s on the Beesley Point Secondary and Bordentown Secondary. Great video as always AC.
Thanks Zach.
I remember in the 60's and 70's Erie and then Erie Lackawanna railroad use GP-7's to deliver feed cars on the local to the feed mills in Nicholson and Hop Bottom. They had a very unique sound all their own.
Yes they do, much different from the later 645s.
They sounded something like an organ when they revved up.
@@kpkndusa Interesting analogy.
Hopefully whatever NS sends to auction will go to a shortline RR and live on. I hope they don't get scrapped.
Me too.
Some do. In my opinion they were an iconic part of railroad history and I hope there are more efforts to preserve quite a few of them as well as see them live on with short lines. NS does still operate about 60 something (SD40-2 and GP38-2) models. The SD40-2 is the real rarity they have with high hoods. Though the model itself is not particularly rare those still retaining the high hood are extremely rare.
Here in South Carolina it's still not to uncommon not to see a former SOUTHERN GP38-2 on local FREIGHT P-76. But this past week it had 2 FORMER CONRAIL GP38-2s! But hopefully 1 or 2 of them will be working again on the PIEDMONT Division to the PIEDMONT branch!
GREAT VIDEO! THOUGH the music was a bit noisy and repetitive. Perhaps next time you SHOW VIDEOS of passing FREIGHT train's. It would be great to hear the LOCOMOTIVES!
Thanks Tom.. I hope that you can catch the high hoods and ex-Cons a few more times before they disappear.. The high hoods would probably be first.
Great photos man!
Thanks Mark.
I could make a video of these high hood diesels without the help of the music!and since the locomotives are the stars of the show, you should let THEM DO THE TALKING!NOT THE MUSIC! THIS IS WHI I NO LONGER BUY TRAIN VIDEOS ,BECAUSE NEARLY EVERY ONE OF THESE IS FILLED WITH MUSIC! LET THE LOCOMOTIVES DO THE TALKING SINCE TBEY ARE THE STARS OF THE SHOW!
These high hood reminds me of the Alco RS 8 we have in Jamaica.
Nice video
Though at 5:06 I DO want to listen the locos sound which is muuusic for a railfan ...please mate
Here in Argentina all roster from 50s 60s are high hoods: ALCO rsd16 rsd35 fpd7 EMD g12w gr12w GE u12 u13 u18;
most of them are still running nowadays with sixty years or more of service
Cheers
Thanks for that info Ricardo.
Wheeling and lake erie railroad still has some high hoods I see them in the yard and pulling freight down the rails
Yeah, I've seen them too.
+Trains21 I know Wheeling & Lake Erie got a bunch of high nose GP35 and GP38-2 I still see them at my hometown all the time.
Yeah, I've seen them in person years ago, in videos recently.
High good still patrolling Sterling Secondary in Michigan. Conrail Shared Assets area.
Nice.. Thanks for that info.
we are lucky that in australia that we have a stack running in mainline stuff to, Mainly EMD and Alco and if you are lucky English Electric Products too!
Nice!!
Theres one in Ft Wayne, Indiana
Yep.. Saw it in another's video.. Thanks.
Interesting video!!!
Thanks Shawny!
I know for a fact that TVRM owns one of the NS High Hood GP38-2s
Yep, pretty sure I saw it in a video about a week ago.
Former Rock Island at the end?
Ironic, High Hoods and Carbodies spelt the end for Steam but in the end couldn't save themselves from being replaced
Not ironic.. The natural progression of technology.
