Alan Tudyk on Playing a Racist Baseball Manager in 42 | Jackie Robinson Biopic

- Alan Tudyk stars as late baseball manager Ben Chapman in the new Jackie Robinson biopic 42, which took the top spot at the box office over the weekend. The actor is best known for his comedic work, so when he stopped by our LA studios recently, he told us portraying the well-documented racist was outside his comfort zone in more ways than one. He also spoke to us about his role on Suburgatory and hinted that his character, Noah, will have a chance to get revenge on the man who stole his girlfriend in an upcoming episode. Watch our interview to see what else Alan had to say about working alongside Harrison Ford and why Jackie's story should make Americans proud.

I have been so used to seeing Alan Tudyk playing funny and likable characters (Wash, Wot, Steve the Pirate, even King Candy was a fun character to watch), to see him playing such a truly repulsive man in '42' was really surprising for me.
dont forget i robot, i didnt know this, shows u he's more talented than we think
Rest In Peace Chadwick Boseman.
(1977-2020).
42nd like lets go
@@tystrickland I almost didn't like this tweet so as to leave 42 as the number of likes!
for me it was maybe the strongest moment of the movie. I felt deeply for Jackie in that moment. Other eye opening moment was when whole team was refused accesss to the hotel bc of JR. In that moment they were experiencing a tiny tiny glimpse of JR's world, yet didn't seem to embrace the lesson of that moment at all.
I felt bad for Alan Tudyk too!
Alan is just too good in making us fall in love in a character and hating a character.
I love Alan but I don't like Ben.
Ben Chapman was a jerk and I’m so glad he got fired in 1948.
That’s the sign of a great actor!
Than he did his job and did it well
Chapman was teammates with Babe Ruth on the Yankees. Ironically Babe was more than willing to play with black players and often did in the off season.
he will always be steve the pirate to me lol
hollowpointkid He will always be Turbo to me!
Who's steve the pirate?
“Gaar, Joe’s be the only place for Steve”.
@@RossDCurrie you've never seen Dodgeball?
@@firecrackerjack68 Have you? "Who's Steve the Pirate?" is a joke from the movie.
Hey Alan Tudyk he really gets into his characters. I dig his work.
can't believe this is the same guy from dodgeball???
rene hernandez Hey look, it’s Steve the Pirate! 😂
Yarghh joes be the only place for Steve
“...Gar....... Peter? *pirate eyebrow raise*”
Why are you posing that as a question?
Are you asking us what you can't believe?
We can't answer that, only you can.
Silly "question".
@@OriginalPuro that was a quote at the end of Dodgeball.
Loved him in “Wreck-It-Ralph”!!
Rohan Padiyar he was also on the Sequel as the Search browser guy
to be honest. .when I saw that scene, I was crying and claping at him at the same time (double alliteration there, lol)
crying at the real character for beig an ass hole and claping at the character for playing the part, he looked really convincing,
great acting
I cried for the real Jackie Robinson. To have to endure what he did.
He's so good in the movie ,I hate his character
42 likes. I don’t wanna ruin it so I’ll give it a like here 👍🏻
Great video. Thanks for this interview
He did a good job considering how much we hate the character he played.
As a huge baseball fan, I was disappointed, given the title of this clip, that he didn't spend more time actually talking about portraying Chapman.
He was actually my grandads uncle he played for the Yankees with babe in the 30s and what tommy said that he trashed talked everyone he did he called Germans things Irish things southerners things and Yankees things to get in there head. He realized what he said was wrong and apologized not just for the press.
@@wheelersmith1031 crazy, was a different world back then. Kill or be killed. None of the political correctness we have today. Unfortunately these labels become ingrained and it takes one in a whole generation to face it head on and become an example of something different. RIP to your great uncle, RIP to Jackie. We're all better for these stories which we aspire to remember not repeat.
Loved the way he voiced I Robot!
Sonny
Obviously for any actor or actress in this modern era, it's an incredibly tough and emotionally draining job to play a racist character. I can't think of anyone who enjoy it, because it was such a tumultuous time in history. I would hate having to play a character that the entire world was going to hate.
Legend as it that Alan Tudyk wasn't suppose to be in 42. He was just on set visiting wearing classic baseball uniform and just went off at Chadwick Boseman during filimg....They kept it in the film since it fit.
“Wait, you guys shooting a movie here?”
Alan Tudyk is great
Alan shares my same feelings for baseball lol
Very Interesting it’s amazing
I loved him on suburgatory
Since a “A Knights Tale” I’ve always been a fan.
He did such of good job, that I hated him. You know an actor has done a good job, that you think about his role. Like not a character, you know if the did well when you think about the role days after. You have to separate the artist from the art.
Wow, So true. you said it exactly how I would have put it. Thanks
I hated that character I think Ben chapman is image is going to remembered because of this movie he was wrong and he realized it in an interveiw that he was
this is a damn great actor
I've always had a low-key attraction to Alan. Ha ha
Might want to do your homework a bit better, interviewer: Ben Chapman died in 1993, 20 years ago. That's TWO decades.
Well done an A+ for effort ⭐
Exellent
Isn’t This Guy In Transformers: Dark Of The Moon?
I think he might be
Time to watch Firefly.
and Tucker from Tucker and Dale vs Evil
Can someone please upload Ben Chapman's scenes from the film?
dude was fucking halarious
best actor alive
We smoking on Ben Chapman
I got to do a show with him
Seems like a nice person though...
This from a young cardinal fan...who stops and thinks...what if we signed Jackie, Satchel and Campy...
the Cardinals could have had the greatest team that ever lived....it was the southern and western most team's fans racism that Branch Rickey was handcuffed from stocking all the great talent (they still had the farm system) and becoming the greatest team to ever live...
they had half the talent in one league and the other half in the other...idiots...
Good actor. Really hated him in the movie
Lindsay Miller is so hot
why he seems always have a gum on his mouth🤣
He’s so cute
I wish somebody would upload the clip of him in it.
every black person in the united states loves every white person. and that is a fact. and the opposite is true. I just love every single person in the world.
What in the world are you talking about?
