If I was a blackbird (Irish trad.)

  • Romantic XIX century ballad, probably originated in Ireland. My take uses 3-part harmonies, real voices, and a Martin D-42AR (adirondack/amazon)
    If I was a blackbird
I am a young sailor, my story is sad
For once I was carefree and a bold sailor lad
I courted a lassie by night and by day
But now she has left me and sailed far away
Oh if I was a blackbird, could whistle and sing
I'd follow the vessel my true love sails in
And in the top rigging I would there build my nest
And I'd flutter my wings o'er her lily-white breast
Or if I was a scholar and could handle a pen
One secret love letter to my true love I'd send
And I'd tell of my sorrow, my grief and my pain
Since she's gone and left me in yon flowery glen
Oh if I was a blackbird, could whistle and sing....
I sailed o'er the ocean, my fortune to seek
Though I missed her caress and her kiss on my cheek
I returned and I told her my love was still warm
But she turned away lightly and great was her scorn
Oh if I was a blackbird, could whistle and sing....
I offered to take her to Donnybrook Fair
And to buy her fine ribbons to tie up her hair
I offered to marry and to stay by her side
But she said in the morning she sailed with the tide
Oh if I was a blackbird, could whistle and sing....

This is indeed a beautiful song and sounds very traditional but I believe it was actually written by Andy M. Stewart who unfortunately passed away not too long ago.

thank you for listening and your comment! Concerning the author of the song, check this page: mainlynorfolk.info/folk/songs/ifiwasablackbird.html, which would suggest an older origin of the song

This is a lovely version of this tune. I just discovered your videos, Lazy Shark, and I've been enjoying them. You stay close to the traditional versions, and evoke the true beauty of the songs. This indeed is a song from Ireland, albeit sung in English, not Irish, gazzau 79, and it uses a melody and words that I've heard before, bob4jjjj. Elegantly simple....

I thought it was Irish, but Lazy Shark says it is Scottish. At any rate, it is beautiful. Do the Tannahill Weavers do a version of this? I know I've heard several versions. This one is lovely....

actually I think you are right, it is most probably an irish song originally, I am going to correct this, thanks!
