- It’s Kayembe’s birthday! He is the first baby gorilla to be born at the Cleveland Metroparks Zoo. He is now a One year old! This video shows Kayembe, his surrogate mom, Fredrika, and his dad, Mokolo. He is a very active one year old. On this day, he ran back and forth probably 15 times while I was there.
Did you know:
Kayembe was born 6 weeks premature;
he got pneumonia when about 2 months old;
his birth mom was N’neka, but Fredrika is the one that raised him.

Kayembe is a mischievous little boy, but I've noticed he seems to be nicer to his little sister, Jameela. They will have such fun together in just a few months when she gets a bit older.

Oh my goodness, what an adorable little fella! If any baby gorilla deserves a couple of little sisters to play with, it's Kayembe. He put his time in with the rather boring adults and is soooo ready for some real playtime. Awesome video!

Awww having followed since the start of the Netflix series of his arrival and subsequently being scooped up by the fantastic Fredricka, I’ve fallen in love with the entire troop from across the pond 🇬🇧, and as a semi bed bound spinal injury disabled person @larry’s animal safari has made this all possible, thank you Larry for all you’re hard work involved in bringing us all this 🙏🏼

It’s amazing how baby gorillas seem to instinctively beat their chests (or more accurately, tummies) when they’re feeling happy and confident. I’ve seen videos of female baby gorillas doing this too. It really seems to be a behavior unique to this species.
Interesting, I thought our boy Kayembe was imitating his dad, but girls will do it too ? Cool
There is a troop in Taiwan the D’Jeeco family/troop and both the little boys Jabali & Ringo also do this, and even sit on their fathers shoulders and drum on his head which is fascinating because he’s so patient and gentle regardless 😊 none of their footage comes remotely close to yours Larry because the way you shoot brings the audience (in my opinion) to the actual zoo and feels like standing at the viewing area 🙏🏼 thank you

To those who bemoan captivity: we get it. But these animals are critically endangered and zoos help raise both money and awareness for the species. This is one of the best zoos, too. What they've done for this troop is heroic.

Awwwww - happy birthday li’l man❣️❣️🎉 🎂 🥳 🎈 Thanks for this absolutely joyful video, Larry! The birthday boy seems very excited and is having SO much fun. It’s amazing how he has suddenly become a very active toddler and not a little baby any more. Moloko seems to be warming up to him now he’s a little bigger. As always, it’s lovely to see Fredrika keeping an eye on Kayembe’s safety, but also allowing him space to play and explore. He was certainly full of beans on his big day! How many times did he climb that branch?! 😅 Sweet, energetic little fellow❣️

If you look at some of the other exhibits like monkey world (Dorset,uk) and Taiwan Tapai zoo they also make fabulous enrichment puzzle feeders out of it too, Little rascal Keyembe loves to swing doesn’t he 🥰

Kayembe is his own little birthday cheerleader there for awhile. 😂😂 So cute and oh so active. Much more than Kunda at this age because Freddy is not a helicopter mom like Kebi. It’s fascinating to see the difference between the two baby’s. 😊 Would have loved to see more of Mokolo and Kayembe sharing the hammock, but knowing Kayembe he probably didn’t stay there very long. 😂❤

Kebi HAS to be a “Helicopter Mom” as you call her Precisely because Kayembe is So MISCHIEVOUS that an ACCIDENT could happen and Kunda be seriously Injured or God Forbid KILLED due to Kayembe’s JUMPING, POUNCING and Outright KIDNAPPING of her. If her little skull were to be Inadvertently CRUSHED or one of her Tiny Limbs BROKEN by him Jumping ON TOP of her from on High, would you STILL think Negatively of Kebi as a “Helicopter Mom” hmmm 🤷🏽♀️ It would be TOO LATE then to cry 😢 over Spilled Milk if such an Awful thing were to happen. It’s Kebi’s RESPONSIBILITY as Mama to PROTECT Baby Kunda while she’s still Growing and Developing. Also, the Keepers are Pissing me Off because they should be MORE ATTENTIVE to Kay so as to TRAIN and TEACH him HOW to be Gentle with the younger and WEAKER children. As it stands now, he’s just allowed to run Wild and TERRORIZE nearly everyone in the Troop (except Dad MokoLo). The Keepers have a DUTY to provide the SAFEST and BEST living conditions possible for the Entire family.

Happy belated birthday little guy ❤. You had a rough start at life but you were so incredibly lucky to be born into this troop bc you got Freddie as your surrogate momma and she loves you as her own. Now all the ladies seem to be in love with you including your biological momma. Can't wait to visit you soon buddy. So proud this troop is here in CLE my hometown!

Sammy I agree with every word and it really shows in his personality that he’s well cared for and loved, I follow many troops online due to disability but I have a special love for this particular troop for these very reasons, Fredricka is a gorilla angel for sure
