    Could you make a video like this, but for young chins? Mine is only a few months and I know theres a lot of different rules for chinchillas younger than 1

    • @sunflowermyths4175
      @sunflowermyths4175 5 лет назад +2

      - if this is the first week having your chinchilla, its suggested to leave him/her be so she/he can get used to her new home; don't clean up anything, and avoid putting your hand in the cage.
      - baby chins (less than 1) need an unlimited supply of pellets
      - make sure to take things slow when forming a bond! you can try stress bonding but its not very popular with little chins (driving in a car with a chin) , find a safe space to make a play area, where everything stays the same.
      - bonding sessions with you and your chin should consist of you sitting in one spot, don't force anything; let your chin come to you
      - make sure you're giving regular dust baths! I know its obvious but a clean chin is a happy chin
      - sit with your chin! the more your chin hears your voice, the more likely they are to remember you by your voice. you can even sing to them if you like (that has been a big thing that my chins like)
      - spend as much time with them as possible. young chins imprint, meaning they will likely become more attached to you if you spend more time with them

    • @sunflowermyths4175
      @sunflowermyths4175 5 лет назад

      also, you can give your chin some alfalfa hay when they're under a year

    What kind of wheel do they need?

  • @Onytz
    @Onytz 5 лет назад +3

    Do chinchillas need a dark place to sleep in? During the day, my cage stays in natural light, so I need to know if it needs a little house for my chinchilla to hide in/needs to be covered with a fleece.

    • @ericking2906
      @ericking2906 5 лет назад +1

      Onytz Your chin definitely needs a hideout in its cage. They love to hide and he’ll probably go in there to sleep. Lighting shouldn’t be an issue as long as your chin isn’t exposed to direct sunlight. Because of the dense ness of their coats, they shouldn’t be exposed to direct sunlight.

    I have a difficult time letting my 2 chinchillas out because they absolutely despise being held and it stresses them out a lot, they aren’t afraid of me but being picked up and whenever I go to try they hate it. And run away and get freaked out. We definitely have a close bond but whenever I let them out or try and pick them up they run away and just don’t want to be around me at all unless I’m not looking at them and not reaching towards the. But then when I let them out I can’t get them back in without picking them up and it’s a whole issue.

    • @minasunny123
      @minasunny123 5 лет назад

      Mine is like that as well. He loves scratches and to be petted but hates it when I try to pick him up so in order for me not to stress him out I take a carrier and let him go into it and then I can put him back into the cage. This way works really well for me. If you cannot get them to jump in a carrier than you can just leave the cage open and they will eventually get back into it.

    • @ericking2906
      @ericking2906 5 лет назад +1

      Use their dust bath to pick them up. Let them get in the bath then lift it up to their cage for them to jump out.

    Hii Merlin 🥰🥰 glad to see you are back and another great video! I went and saw a female chinchilla at a petsmart by my house and I felt so bad for her.. she was all alone in a little cage with no toys and no other chin to play with. I Really really want to get her but I’m just so nervous about screwing up with her or doing more harm then good. I’ve researched a ton and know all the proper materials and stuff needed to take care of a chin properly but I still feel this uncertainty 😟 I don’t wanna give a animal a bad life

    • @minasunny123
      @minasunny123 5 лет назад +1

      At this stage of your chinchilla parenting the best way to make sure they are happy is to provide them with time and leave them be. They need some time to get to know the smells and the noises in your home so dont worry. It seems like they are adapting well if it is only day two and they are already eating out of your hand. Just give the little one space and they will start to love you and enjoy themselves that much faster.

    • @sunflowermyths4175
      @sunflowermyths4175 5 лет назад

      take it slow :) it sounds good that he eats out of your hand, but try your best to leave him alone for the first week. (I know its hard!) what really helped my bond with my chins was singing to them; lots of chins like music (calming) and they get to know your voice

    • @skatesandfrenchies4925
      @skatesandfrenchies4925 5 лет назад +1

      Thank you everyone for the advice. I left him alone for a couple of days and I would just walk by his cage and he slowly starting coming out of his shell. He is such a sweetheart we just had our second playtime and he jumps on me and let's me hold him I try not to hold him but he will jump into my hand when I open his cage. I love being a chinchilla parent!

    ong comment incoming:
    i've been thinking about getting a couple of chinchillas (i heard they're better in pairs or even groups since they're social animals) and dedicating a whole room to their habitat, so they'd be semi-free roam, but in an enclosed, safe environment. my plan was to have their cages (or cage? would it be healthier to keep them together or give them their own separate spaces?) open at all times with a small ladder up to them so they'd have a safe place to return to if they're scared or need transporting, but basically have a full room to themselves to explore and exist in (with a gate to close off the room's door when i would come in). i was thinking i'd scatter dust on the floor throughout the room (should the floor itself be tile, wood, carpet or some other material?) and place logs and rocks and other more natural things in there to simulate their wild habitat, as well as some man-made structures for like, climbing and hiding and such. maybe even grow some vegetation that they'd eat from their natural environment and put it in there. in addition to the dust on the floor, i'd offer large dust baths in the room, too, one for each chinchilla, as well as two wood chip boxes for basically bathrooms (i've heard that wood shavings is what you use for that?); hopefully "toilet train" them in a sense, at least for urinating. offer water and food (hay and also chinchilla-food pellets) in ways they'd find it in nature to keep them engaged. i'd also keep the room dimly lit, with sheer curtains over the window to keep direct sunlight from entering, but still light enough to see and navigate. of course, keep the room cool (but not cold). all of this so they'd have stimulation (at their own pace and desire) and stay mentally and physically healthy, and give them ample room to live happily and fully. i'd go through the process of this adjustment and trust-training with them and spend time with them everyday bonding with them and giving them my love, but mostly leave them alone, save for feeding times and cleaning.
    how does this sound, to all u chinchilla owners out there? a good plan or bad? or does it need adjustments? any and all feedback would be very appreciated!

    • @minasunny123
      @minasunny123 5 лет назад

      I dont think that it is a good idea if you do not have a pedigree for him. They are not mandatory, the animal itself can be perfectly healthy but unless you are aware of their genetic history, the parents, grandparents etc. I would not risk it as the kits may have some issues. If you got it from a family friend then ask them about the family tree. Please make sure you do that and research the breeding process in depth to make sure any future kits will be healthy, there are a lot of chinchillas that have to be put to sleep early in their lives, like the first five years due to irresponsible backyard breeding.

No matter how much you think how friendly your animals are, never do this.

    Hi! I watched most of your videos before getting a chinchilla and it helped me so much and maybe you have an answer to my question. The cage I have is designed so that at the bottem you can add bedding underneath the bars. The rest of the levels are just boards of plastic and I decided to cover them in fleece, following your advice. The thing is I watched him and he just pees on the bottom of the cage where the bars are. My question is how often should I change the fleece liners on the other levels? For now I changed them weekly, but they don't smell bad at all. Is it bad if I leave them for longer? Of course I sweep the cage every day for poop.

    • @sunflowermyths4175
      @sunflowermyths4175 5 лет назад

      you usually want to do a deep clean once a week, spraying the cage down with a sanitizer (a good one is 2 parts water to 1 part apple cider vinegar) then replacing with a new pee pad and fleece over top. hope that helped :)

      Hedecze I know your struggle, it happens to the best of us. What I recommend is kinda just sitting back and looking at your schedule and maybe moving things around and make it as productive as possible. Remember that your mental and emotional health, school, work, and family come first but with good planning you can still give your chinchilla adequate time for attention and care. It’s all about maximizing all your time throughout the day. It’s hard as chin owners but it’s possible! Hope things get better😊💕

    If anyone knows how to get my chinchilla to stop chewing my walls please tell me.

      chewing is how chinchillas play, but if (s)he's chewing baseboards/unwanted things, it likely means (s)he is bored. try adding more chew toys in his/her space. if that t\doesnt work, I'm pretty sure Lennon the bunny (on youtube) has a diy spray to use on baseboards

      Majestic Llama I would find cardboard or fencing of some sort to cover what you don’t want your chinchilla to chew when they’re outside of the cage. They are naturally curious and you can’t stop them from chewing stuff 💕

      ii Marquise ii ii Marquise ii He’s has to live alone since he was young because he doesn’t get along well with other chins but I’m looking into getting another chinnie and maybe keeping him separate just for Merlin to at least smell and see another chinchilla. Maybe over time they wouldn’t fight 🤷‍♀️💕

    My chinchilla has a good life cause he eats lots of sour gummy worms and it makes him happy

    • @eliserich1063

      G R That isn’t healthy for your chinchilla. Take a small child for example, although they love fast food and chips and it makes them happy, it’s incredibly bad to feed them a lot. Please stop this habit, for the sake of your chinchilla.

      @@gr9541 Chinchillas tend to have a lifespan of 10 years but it can change depending upon conditions, so it's impossible to say. Do you take your chinchilla to an exotic vet?
