Thank you so much! I feel like I discovered your RUclips channel just in time. My daughter starts college this fall, and your videos on various aspects of student life will be so helpful for her. I will share your channel with her ASAP. In this video, I especially appreciated that you got into the nitty gritty of the physical act of taking notes. I am wondering if you might consider a future video in which you share the intellectual decisions you make. For instance, it would be helpful to hear about how you decide to highlight or take a note on something. In this video, you mentioned that a key consideration is that the passage states or connects to the main argument. You said this in passing, but I think it would be great for students to hear more about this in a sustained and systematic way. You are producing AMAZING videos. Thank you!!!!
Thanks so much for the suggestion! And good luck to your daughter!!!
You look like Lily Potter or Harry Potter and Ginny Weasley's daughter smhw! 😍 With your green eyes and red hair.
The video is amazing btw. Learned the right way of annotation 💯
YES this video came at the perfect time! I'm starting a similar program in the fall and have been thinking about getting a iPad to supplement my Macbook for annotating PDFs. Thus far I have always printed every reading, but that's not great for the environment nor for keeping my notes and articles organized (which is especially crucial as comprehensive exams approach 😬). What iPad and iPad pencil are you using?
I have an iPad Pro 11 inch and Apple Pencil 2 🥰
@@KaelynGraceApple awesome, thanks!
💕💕💕
Cutting to the chase, if you want to know about highlighting and inserting text in PDF Element, start at @4:36. Very basic functions.
Is there an app where i can view al my highlights from different pdfs in one place and return to the reference once i click it ? Something like mendeley or reference managers
For PDF annotation, I use PDF Xchange (Free Software).
GoodNote 5 only supports Apple stylus, and I was really disappointed about that. With my stylus (Wacom) I couldn't go for an upgrade!
Disclaimer... I haven't annotated a REAL BOOK for ages!! It's so much fun seeing the first part of your video!
Your handwriting is SO PRETTY!
I love goodnotes for the iPad Pro with the Apple Pencil but it was an expensive investment. I will be doing more videos on books, what I’m reading, etc soon 😊
Hi, does GoodNotes support PDFs, say, of 1000 pages? I ask this because my main PDF reader and markup tool has been Books (the Apple standard app) but it has had too many bugs lately, becoming almost unusable. Apart from that, it worked perfectly for me, so I’m looking for something that can carry out that function. Thank you
Hello Kaelyn,
I appreciate that you have shared this content. With regards to your segment on your PDF notes, can you detail if you had to scan the PDF via the ipad, or is this PDF pulled into you ipad from a digital repository? Would both approaches work?
I got GoodNotes because of you and have been loving it!
That’s awesome! So glad you’ve been enjoying it and have found it useful! It’s definitely one of my favorite apps!
Why are you using PDFelement and not a note taking app like Goodnotes etc.? I watch you struggle through all those steps to set the font/color/size positiony for your simple margin notes. Seems extra annoying.
Thank you so much for your tutorials. I am going back to grad school at 52!
I just downloaded PDFelement! At first I Ioved it but then my professor began to scan excerpt from books and I can not find a way to edit these scans. Any advice? Thank you so much!
Can I use pdf element for free and without subscription?
Do you prefer annotating on Mac or iPad?
First off love this and your channel, stumbled across it while I was looking for something more specific. Maybe you know of a tool... I’m looking for a way to highlight portions of my pdf text book and then be able to just view all of the highlighted parts in their own “note” without having to scroll through the whole chapter to see them. I know I can copy past but that just seems a bit tedious. Any suggestions!?
Commenting because I would like this also
Just a note to get custom colors you need to buy apps like goodnotes or notability
1:58 video starts here
yeah im definitely getting good notes , thank youu for the reviewwww
Hey Apple.
Brianna Fraser…?
wow this is so random but right before I clicked on this video I was debating whether I (an undergraduate history major) should get an iPad for my studies and education. And then it turns out that you’re studying history! it made me absolutely happy to see that and I can’t wait to watch more of your videos. Thank you for making me seen :)
I’m so glad you managed to find my channel! I have a video all about studying history in undergrad going up in the next couple weeks so keep an eye out 🥰
Love it!
Hey Kaelyn! Thxs for the video, it's very informative. Don't you think PDF Element is also useful on iPad?
Thanks for the video! Your account has beens so helpful!
I am curious how you organize your PDFs documents and use between your computer and Ipad? I currently use Goodnotes on my Ipad, but i find myself constantly having to switch between using my Ipad and laptop between my reading and class time. Goodnotes is not super practical to use on my laptop, and i'd like to use PDFelement, but i also don't want to have to browse through so many apps.
Thank you so much for your video! I am a transfer student in the psychology department, and this website of pdf element will benefit me so much since all of my classes are online, and I have the majority of my books in pdf format. Thank you!
this was so helpful, thank you!!
Jordan Gamache Aw I’m so glad! 💕 i figured it was about time I talked about this!
All my pdf books are on google drive, is there way to annotate the pdf while it is on the drive?
Thanks for the video. I just bought an iPad air for my PhD studies
Thanks for the super helpful video Kaelyn, it is so useful to be able to see how other research students use these apps! ❤️ I have one question - how do you find these apps for then organising your PDFs, say if you had a very large amount of them? I am trying to figure out a good system for highlighting and annotating papers which doesn’t require me to print out piles and piles of them (which is my current system because I am one of those people who doesn’t really retain or understand stuff properly unless I can scribble on it by hand), but for any given topic that can be a really large number of documents, so I wonder how these apps go with then organising the documents to make them easy to categorise and find later? Working within Endnote would be ideal but the annotation system is so clunky unfortunately :(
I actually download all my highlighted Articles and PDFs to my computer and upload them into Mendeley :) I also have them organized categorically on my computer
Maybe I should make a video on how I keep my academic materials organized on my computer 😂 there’s so many articles to keep track of
TheRedHeadAcademic that’s such a good idea I never thought of uploading the annotated version to my reference manager!! Thank you for that! And yes I agree that’s the problem I’m coming across now - I have hundreds of articles stored on Endnote so keeping track of which ones I have read or which are the more useful ones is becoming quite a challenge 😂 I’m trying to use notion for note keeping but still haven’t found an efficient way to initially read and annotate so I might try GoodNotes for that this week 😁
Madison Tripp give it a try and let me know what you think of goodnotes
TheRedHeadAcademic yes I will, I use it currently for some data interpretation work but nothing too heavy duty so I’ll have to have a play around with it, but I definitely like the interface and the colour options etc. that’s probably my favourite part 😄
hi, goodnotes use lot of memory? I need a good pdf reader which I can send to my google drive easily because I just have 32GB on my Ipad
Nope! I have hundreds of documents saved in GoodNotes and it still only takes up just over 1 GB
Been using XODO for a while, but I will try PDF Elements. Looks interesting.
do you export your annotations in pdfs in goodnote and pdfelements?
Yes! And then I file them on my computer and Notion
Hey Kaelyn! I'm really late because I just discovered your gem of a channel ❤! I just wanted to ask you how one can annotate effectively on books that are borrowed from the library. If not on the book, where can we take effective notes to remember without spending too much time to copy the quote?
Hi, which ipad are you using?
Hi! Thanks for your video, super helpful 😊 I’m so excited to try out some of these apps. Do you think it’s best to get the 64gb or 256gb if you’re a college student. I’m thinking of purchasing the iPad Air but not sure how much storage would be good. Thanks!
Karla Luna Silva I have the 256 but have only used about a half of it so far with all my apps, notes, books, etc 🥰
TheRedHeadAcademic thank you! 😊
Do you have any commentary on the use of One Note vs. Good Note
This was really helpful!! Thank you!! 🥰
Yay! I’m glad you enjoyed it 💕
But how do you integrate them? What if you want to start reading an article in your computer and finish it on your ipad? I tried to do all in pdfelement but you cannot write effectively with the apple pencil on the ipad as you do with Goodnotes.
I recommend checking my more recent videos as this was recorded two years ago
@@KaelynGraceApple Great, thanks a lot!
Hi, Nice video. I work on a lot of PDFs for plans and quotes that I get from engineers or construction contractors. I have to find a lot of symbol and calculate their quantity. Example: On a plan, I have to find this kind of symbol ($), I also have to highlight a lot of important information in the specifications. I am looking for an application that could compile all this information for me and I would classify it afterwards. What do you suggest to me?
Great video. I’m thinking of getting an iPad Pro 11 inch just like yours but I’ve been wondering how do you manage the files that you annotate on your ipad and on your Mac? As in how do you decide wether you want to annotate a file on your mac vs iPad? Or can we use both and go back and forth depending on whatever’s the situation and so on? Or are they separate so once we annotate a file on iPad I won’t be able to go over it again on Mac and edit it further and vice versa. Thanks 🙏
Super simple and helpful
Is there any limit of pdf size that can be added to the goodnotes like i have some pdfs of around 200-300mb
& one more thing can we add pages in between the pdf??for our handwritten notes
No limit that I’m aware of. I’ve uploaded full size books to goodnotes and yes you can embed additional note pages
@@KaelynGraceApple Thank you so much💙
Hey! I wanted ask you something. Suppose I have a pdf in my Google drive and if I open that file with goodnotes, will it download the file in the ipad itself or will the file remain in the cloud and my annotations will also get updated? So that if I open that file from my any other computer, I can see the annotations. One more thing, apart from goodnotes, is there any free software which does all these? Thanks in advance.
Yes, I also want to know about this. Is it, pdf from google upload to goodnotes or it can just open and we can annotated it, and it will sync with our google drive??
No it will not sync
You speak soo well.
We have very nearly identical handwriting and I’m studying political economy in Sydney!
Love and appreciate your tutorial and the nature of your research, and congratulations to you for starting your grad program!! :)
Thank you so much!
Peace ✌🏻
Very helpful! You should check out this book called: The color of money- black banks and the racial wealth gap. Sooo much great info and gave me an understanding of the history.
I'd just like to ask, why AA studies?
Because I think it is important to study history through various frameworks and that to study the colonial era in America, especially slavery, one must also receive training in black studies from black scholars
New subscriber!! I have never annotated in books before, how do I know what should I be highlighting and what’s note worthy??
I highlight main conclusions, supporting arguments/statements, and quotes for future research/reference 🥰
@@KaelynGraceApple Thank you!!!
Your videos have been very helpful! Thanks so much for making them.
Do you know if it's possible to just sync the files you annotate in GoodNotes with Apple's iCloud? When I try to do auto backup in GoodNotes, iCloud is not one of the services listed. Or is exporting the annotated file the only option?
They do not directly upload to icloud but they are saved within the app and can be downloaded as PDFs
This is the problem, whatever you annotate in good note, you can't highlight the same document on your labtop since it will not sync with goodnote
This is so nice im starting my grad research this semester and just got an ipad since i cant take having to use only mac anymore haha
Hello! Thank you for this video! I have only been using a mac as a grad student, but I have decided to purchase an ipad because I do not like reading on my mac and I do not want to print out everything. My question is this: I would like to have as few apps as possible. My ideal set up would include keeping my pdfs on my mac or icloud, organized in folders. Then I would like to be able to access those folders the pdfs while using my ipad. When I annotate a pdf on my ipad, the pdf on my mac would also be annotated through synchronization. Would Goodnote be enough for such a set-up? I'd love to hear your opinion. Thanks again.
Yes! And you can just export the annotated pdf directly to your iCloud folder!
