I would say that thia movie is more of a forgotten classic. You don't hear it talked about much anymore. I loved this movie as a kid, yet I had all but forgotten about it until this video.
There's a moment when the Old Doctor gets bitter by a Spider his wife laughs and says "Oh it was only a spider" being from Australia the idea of someone saying "It's only a spider bite" always made me laugh
I mean as an American I am very weary of spiders. Then again I have been bitten by a Recluse and lived in an area with lots of Black Widows. Spiders are no joke, especially when you have a giant hole rotting in your leg.
i have heard about this movie more once. infact i saw a trailer for it on fox once(this was just as spiderman had come out so they said meet the real spiderman) and showed footage of jhongoodmen as the exterminator lol.
This is definitely a cult classic in every way. It’s beloved by just about everyone who’s managed to come across it, and it still holds up incredibly well today due to the incredible practical effects and the great suspense and dark humor. I’ll always adore this fun little movie.
This film still resonates with modern audiences. Had my kids sit down to watch it and it was the first movie in years where they actually watched the movie and weren’t playing with their phones.
I don’t have a ton of great memories of my mom, but maybe my favorite is the day she let me stay home from school and took me to see Arachnophobia. It wasn’t the kind of movie I expected it to be. I swear I remember the marketing make it look like a zany comedy w John Goodman as the lead. I still ended up loving it. I actually used to dress up as Goodman’s character and run around the yard looking for bugs to exterminate. I’m thinking of bringing that look back for Halloween.
Siskle and Ebert had vacation homes in Grand Beach, Michigan, and would come to my theater to watch movies. Meet them both a few times! Very nice. Gene: Small popcorn, no butter, diet coke. Roger: Large popcorn, extra extra butter "in the middle too please" he's say...large coke.
This movie had me terrified to take a shower as a kid cause of a tiny spider in the corner of my bathroom. Recently rewatched this movie, and I have to say. It holds up so damn well. Classic jeff Daniel's and John Goodman.
We watched this every year in our family household. We are all terrified from spiders and come from a small town like the one protrayed in the film. Also being a huge fan of creature features this one takes the cake!
I want to watch it just mostly to see the performance from John Goodman, but I can barely even make it past seeing the spiders in the trailer. My arachnophobia is super strong. Great video as always. I always look forward to the next one popping up. You either review something I love or make me order a new movie I’m going to fall in love with!
This movie really is such an underrated gem. Does NOT get enough love. And you can't find it anywhere 🤷 C'mon world, this is a Spielberg production for God sakes!
It's currently on Amazon Prime. I've been getting it recommended to me pretty much non-stop. I don't think I've seen it since it was in theaters but it was always a fun, light "scary nature" film.
Yeah I know. I can't find the damn thing anywhere either. Mind you, I don't online shop or have streaming services. I just want the classics of the grand old days of the videostore in my DVD collection.
I know John Goodman is recognized as a great actor but he really low-key is one of the greatest of all time. He gives 100% to every role. He even made Flight watchable past it's front-loaded opening scene.
Loved this. Well done. When I was a kid this film scared the living hell out of me. I am deathly afraid of spiders so this is what I call a damn near perfect horror movie. There needs to be more made like this. Less reliance on CG and tons of cheap jump scares.
I remember having the VHS back when I was a kid and watching the hell out of it. It's still one of my favourite movies and one that deserves more love.
HOLY CRAP Thank you for reminding me about Matinee. I very vaguely remember seeing it as a kid, and I have a really strong nostalgic feeling of it being a really great movie. And apparently literally nothing has ever sparked my memory of it until now. Guess I know what Im watching later lol
As someone who’s had a fear of spiders throughout my life, I can say this film defiantly creeped me out. My arachnophobia has lessened thankfully over the years, but I still can’t watch this film without squirming a little bit throughout my viewing. The cast is amazing. Jeff Daniels is great as the lead and John Goodman is hands down the best part of the film. Whenever he’s on screen, I always get a smile on my face. Thank you for covering this film Joe, keep up the great work!
Watching Arachnophobia as a kid gave me arachnophobia. Perfect timing as I had to move two spiders earlier today because they kept building webs by the door and setting off the motion light (which I walked into twice this morning haha).
I love spiders. I know some people are afraid of them and I can see why. But they are great pest control creatures and if you leave them alone, they'll leave you alone.
I feel the same way about snakes, the logic being they’re clean/sleek looking without all the weird parts and eyes of creepy spiders. We had two big fat ones build webs outside our door last night. They kept setting off the motion sensing light. Beautiful webs - we didn’t want to disturb them. That said, they were politely relocated to a new home today.
MATINEE needs an (Almost) Cult Classic video too, because it is a magnificent slice-of-life- and timecapsule-comedy. And for this video: Once again excellent! Would’ve loved it to be five minutes longer with a bit more information - but only if available. Great stuff all around as usual, good Sir!
I adore this movie, it's one of my all time childhood favs! I even love the slip up of showing the spider glued to the piece of wood at the end of the film 😂🕷🕸 #classic
I love this movie. I have no fear of spiders. It’s just a quality, unironic film. I was utterly shocked years after its initial release when I couldn’t find a copy of it available to rent or purchase. The realization that it was unappreciated was the true horror.
God, I absolutely loved this movie when I was young, at the same time I'm pretty sure it's fueled my fear of spiders since I saw it when I was like 6. Eight Legged Freaks was the fun version of this movie that I still love to this day.
I have vague memories of this film, and I definitely remember thinking to myself about thirty minutes from the end: "I have got to finish this to see how they kill the things in case I need to fight them off in my nightmares."
I love this movie, I own it. I thought it would have been considered a cult classic, but now that I think of it, you're probably right. I hardly hear anyone speak of it anymore...this was one of those "fun to catch on TV" movies, back when I had cable in the 90's. Ah, good times.
When I was a senior in high school in 1991, one day we were told that the whole school would watch a movie for a couple of periods using our "Channel One" classroom TVs. Very very strangely, this movie turned out to be Arachnophobia which had swearing and a lot of other thing that are probably inappropriate for 9th graders. I never found out why this happened, but having a mild case of arachnophobia myself, this wasn't a very good experience.
Yeah as the reviewer himself says, it got basically positive reviews and wasn't a flop. It obviously isn't an iconic film like The Thing or Psycho, but it clearly isn't trying to be.

This movie is special to me. I was at an age where I knew it was a scary movie, but I wasn't "scared," so I was kind of proud of myself and thought it was cool. It's always stuck with me because of that.
I loved(and still do) this film as a kid. Me and my family would watch it all the time when I was younger. I havn't seen it in years. Thanks for making this and reminding me of how great it is.
I tried watching it as a kid, when it was released on cable. It freaked me out so bad I went to hide in the coat closet-- and ran right into a giant wolf spider on one of my dad's jackets. Haven't looked at them the same since! That being said, I've been curious to watch it as an adult; just to A) see how much it creeps me out now, B) see how it's aged and C) to enjoy the story and characters again.
I taped this movie off of TV when I was a kid during a movie marathon where it was all bugs and stuff like The Fly, Them!, Arachnophobia and others. This movie and Goodmans performance has always been a standout for me.
Lol everytime i watch or see anything about this movie i always check my shoes before i put them on lol, and i get a tingly feeling as if something is crawling up my back!. Classic!!. Great video and thank you for recognizing this film.

Now this was before the channel guide was a thing. She flips it over there RIGHT WHEN the big, giant mom spider jumps at the camera. She jumped near a damn foot.
There's nothing "almost" about this classic.
yeah it seems like the 'almost cult classics' are split between 'not quite popular enough to be classic' and 'a bit too well-liked to be cult'
I would say that thia movie is more of a forgotten classic. You don't hear it talked about much anymore. I loved this movie as a kid, yet I had all but forgotten about it until this video.

Plain Classic is a valid grade for this film.

I love arachnophobia. Aside from the creepy spiders, John Goodman as the Oddball exterminator is my favorite part of the whole movie.

She jumped near a damn foot.
The DVD shelf did a great review of this back in the early 10's.
As a kid this movie scared me to death but also I couldnt stop watching whenever it was on tv
Ironically, I got an ad for some forgotten 90s film called Dragonworld before this video. Talk about cult classics.
ALMOST? THIS IS A CULT CLASSIC! HELL, IT'S A CLASSIC. I love this movie (And I HATE spiders!!!)!
I thought this movie was a childhood fever dream, I’m happy I’ve found it again.
