Great video! It's hard to find anyone making a video about the Minolta Hi-Matic AF-2. Hopefully, I can get my hands on this camera one day, it's really hard to find one of these where I am from. Also, love the style of your videos. Keep it up!
the AF-2 is a gem among cheap p+s cameras / I used to have one too and I'd constantly be surprised by the way it sees the world / it's a special lens -JC
I'm loving going back to film photography, my older eyes arnt overly keen on manual focus so the af2 suits me auto focus and manual film advance love it. shopping time cheers liked and subbed.
Absolutely loved this video! Was so entertaining to watch unlike others haha. Am really looking forward to seeing more vids from you, Derek and the team too!! ☺️ and the “vibe check” 😂👌🏼 honestly something I do too for almost all the cams I purchase.
GREAT VIDEO! VERY INFORMATIVE!! DEFINITELY MADE UP MY MIND TO GET THE STANDARD MECHANICAL HI MATIC VERSION!!! SIDE NOTE: ISN'T THIS THE SAME CAMERA, THAT THE GREAT, RICKY POWELL USED???
Just found your channel, great stuff! tbh I didn't know these cameras before and they both produce some solid images! Think I'll have a look into the AF-2.
Heya! I stumbled upon your video looking for videos about the hi-matic af2-md and thoroughly enjoyed all your jokes hahah I am having a really hard time getting the back film door open on it though, and am wondering if you have any tips to get that film door open!
Just pull that film rewind lever up good and hard. Dunno, maybe you're has a little dent in it somewhere keeping it shut. I've never had a problem with it
Fun video. I love my AF-2s (I have like 3). Never seen an MD model but I have bad luck with 80s motor advances in point and shoots so it would not be worth it in my case.
Hey man, rookie question here. I have a Minolta af2 on the way but I’m curious, do I set the iso on the camera according to the film I’ve ordered. For example if I’m using Kodak 200 film do I set the iso on the camera to 200. Or can I put the iso on the camera to whatever feels good for the light conditions I am in? Great video btw 👍🏽
So the ISO setting on the camera is there to tell the light meter in the camera how sensitive the film you loaded is. You should set the iso when you load a roll and leave it for the whole roll. The camera will deal with the lighting situation.
Great video man ! Is the viewfinder light blue in the viewfinder on the Minolta himatic af2? I just picked one up and found it a little weird at first lol
It's definitely cooler in tone compared to the naked eye but not so much that I ever noticed it before looking at it just now after reading your comment.
Hi i just picked up a af-2 , just wondering can I use 800 on it or just stick with 400s? Haven't really seen any pictures or infos if I can. I mean its a point and shoot so i dont think iso should really matter? but thats just me! Great content btw!!!
Yeah the AF2 doesn't read the films DX code so it'll shoot at whatever iso you set it at (maxing at 400 obviously). I've never really experimented with pulling a roll a whole stop but shooting a whole roll one stop overexposed would probably be fine. I imagine most of your photos would just look very High Key
I'd like to check out one of the metal versions. However being it's all automatic it seems that light meters always stop working on older cameras. Do you know if light meter issues are common on these cameras ?
So as far as I know, I think it's mainly selenium light meters that go bad over time. If it's an electric light meter, I think they tend to work decently well after many years most of the time. The light meter on both of these guys seemed to work absolutely fine.
Just got my AF-2 MD! Question - what if you don't put batteries inside the date log slot? I assume the film won't have the date print then? Anyone tried this before?
I’ve seen two versions of the af2. I have the same one you have but I’ve seen one with different features and the front of the lens says Minolta Rokkor opposed to the one I have “Minolta lens” do you happen to know the difference between the two?
Oh my hipster hell. I have a 1982 AP-2 with every available lens made by Minolta. My grandfather bought it in 1982 and it has photographed my family's progression through life for the last 41 years without a single failure. He bought it on the occasion of my birth and he gave it to me for my 14th birthday. one would be hard pressed to find a camera from its price point that takes pics like it does. I was not at all interested in cameras until we started having digital imaging. It was then that I really understood how special it is to have something that actually makes an imprint of a certain point it time an locks it there. I have 90 percent of my negatives that that camera has made and it is never any less astounding when making reprints to see what a film camera does. You can't photoshop. You can't edit. You only have that moment in its raw form and even though hipsters annoy the shit out of me, I do appreciate that people arent letting the real camera get lost to the sands of time.
You can use whatever film you want!!! So long as its between 25 and 400 iso. Thats the range of setting on the light meter on the camera. I personally was shooting Colorplus which is a 200 iso film that I love.
did you shoot all your pics with 400 or did you changed it? i barely got the AF2 camera and im trying to get use to it because it’s a first for me, but uhhh through the lens what’s the like person shadow and mountainish(?) figures mean along w the red dot?
So I shot all the photos on ColorPlus which is a 200 ISO film and I shot at box speed (i.e. 200). I didn't try any pushing or pulling on the rolls. And the little guy and mountain tell you where you camera is focused. If it detects a subject closer to the camera, that's the little guy (portrait mode) if the mountain shows up, the camera is probably focused to infinity. Additionally if the red light is blinking the camera hasn't been able to nail focus, if the red light is solid, it's too dark and wants you to use a flash. You want the light to be solid green before pulling the shutter.
Hi! Just got the MD and I’m not sure the autofocus feature is working... There is never a dot beside the ‘person’ or ‘mountain’ icon and no indication that my subject is too far or close. Would you have any tips?
It's possible maybe just the little lights themselves are busted and not the autofocus mechanism. there's really only one way to find out tho and that's to shoot with it. Unfortunately if the AF mechanism itself is broken I don't think there's much you can do other than get a new camera. Not really worth the money to repair these little guys.
I picked up a af2-m today in a thrift store for 20 dollars, its in great condition but when i halfpress the shutter i dont see the AF indication LEDs working? are they only active once there is film inside or whats the deal? :(
Heyyyy I’ve recently purchase the md but I’m encountering this problem. After I took a picture, the shutter dosent come up so I’m unable to proceed taking other pictures. Is it a problem with the shutter, or that there’s something wrong with it??😭
Not sure what you mean exactly by the shutter doesn't come up. But that's the thing with these old point and shoots. Once something starts going weird with them, there's not a ton you can do to fix it. Id say keep fiddling with it, hopefully it works itself out!
the camera lenses seem pretty damn sharp. i also like the regular af - the combo of manual wind with point&shoot vibes is awesome
I've been consistently impressed by how sharp it is for a little cheap point and shoot.

Thanks man! Yeah everyones always making videos about all the fancy influencer-y cameras. Ain't nobody got time for that!
Now i regret passing on all these cheap minolta p&s at the thriftstores. Good looking shots from both of them.
the AF-2 is a gem among cheap p+s cameras / I used to have one too and I'd constantly be surprised by the way it sees the world / it's a special lens -JC
Awsome video! I just found a hi-matic AF for $23 at a thrift store and it works. I've only shot Digital and can't wait to start film!
Awesome find!
the pool shots 😍
dope personality too man! really enjoyed this one
Thanks! Appreciate it! Can't say my personality has ever been described as dope before. A complement I will surely take with me to the bitter end.
That boat shot is insane. Great video man!
Very thanks to your nice review..especially your photo frames are great.
Good video and nice pictures. I really like the one of the girl standing by the river at 7:20. Keep up the good work.

Thanks man!

Thanks so much! Its such a great little camera! I don't understand why it isn't up there with the likes of the Nikon L35AF
I really enjoyed the style of this video
Love your style. This channel is gold and is gonna be huge. Keep it up!
We are certainly hoping so! Thanks!

GREAT VIDEO! VERY INFORMATIVE!! DEFINITELY MADE UP MY MIND TO GET THE STANDARD MECHANICAL HI MATIC VERSION!!! SIDE NOTE: ISN'T THIS THE SAME CAMERA, THAT THE GREAT, RICKY POWELL USED???
Had to look up Ricky Powell (I'm not familiar with him) but I think you're right. Found a few photos of him with the Hi-Matic AF2. Well spotted!
Just found your channel, great stuff! tbh I didn't know these cameras before and they both produce some solid images! Think I'll have a look into the AF-2.
Genuinely cannot recommend it enough. It's still my go-to camera

that mustache is phenomenal 😁
You have a good vibe check mate
Thank you for the video! Nice explaination
interesting comparison, not by much of a difference. but yeah the misfocus issue can be annoying. exposure on the MD I liked more tho.
Love it so much ❤️

The motor drive sounds like something that is just aching to break
And that audio if it on fresh batteries. You should hear it when the batteries are getting low.

“Medical Degree” 😂😂😂
Glad someone found it funny
what kind of batteries did you use for the Minolta AF2-MD? the little coin batteries to be specific
Wish I remembered. I don't have the camera anymore. Sold it to a friend. Nothing a google deep dive probably couldn't find out tho.
It’s needs the LR44!

Have you ever had any issues where the shutter won’t fire. Button seems stuck on mine
I've had a few times where I really have to jam the shutter advance for it to fully "click in". Maybe thats what's happening.
Would you consider the lens to be sharp?
Absolutely. When it nails focus, it really nails it.
Hi! I'm planning to get an AF-2 MD. Can I disable the datestamp if ever?
Yeah you totally can

That could be the case. Im assuming you put batteries in it? I have film in mine right now otherwise it test it out on my end.
Found and AF2MD from my parents old boxes. Sadly its not working anymore.
Oh no! Thats the sad thing about these old point and shoots. They're pretty well impossible to fix.
hey is it possible to turn off the dates for the AF-2 MD
I actually dont know. Probably. I've since sold the camera so I can't just go and check for you
Heyyyy I’ve recently purchase the md but I’m encountering this problem. After I took a picture, the shutter dosent come up so I’m unable to proceed taking other pictures. Is it a problem with the shutter, or that there’s something wrong with it??😭

what iso did you use in af2 md?
Both cameras were loaded with 200 iso film and shot at box speed
@10:55 omg lol that's the best. 🌭 good pic
I've stumble upon this hotdog specter more than once now. He cannot be stopped!
why does this not have more views wtf
My thoughts exactly! hAhaha. More good stuff coming soon so watch out for that.
Medical Degree sounds way better than Motor Drive!
Don't even get me started on the Hi-Matic AF-2 PhD
What ISO did you set when you shoot?
Both cameras were set to box speed, so 200 ISO.
THE MD JOKE HAD ME ROLLING 10/10
