Why kids need video games: Sean Henderson at TEDxCanmore

- Sean has spent so long convincing his parents of the strategy, creativity and teamwork involved in playing video games, he figured it was an idea worth sharing. Violence and gore, he believes, are not the primary motivations for gaming. Complex strategy, new storylines, and tactical teamwork are. His talk will be a roadmap of why you should consider letting your kids play, and how playing these games will enhance their development and better prepare them for the future.
Speaker Profile
Sean is a 12 year old Grade 7 student at Lawrence Grassi Middle School in Canmore. He played his first video game when he was 6 years old and has been negotiating for screen time ever since. He plays a wide variety of video games, including Halo, Call of Duty, Minecraft, Dance Central 3 and Battlefield. Sean loves the mountains, recently climbed Ha Ling, and has decided to pick up his electric guitar again.

Told my parents this and they said “well it’s bad if your first priority when you get home to game” and I said “if we finish home work and studies can we play?” They “it’s bad how much you want to play” i said “ if it’s pressuring game us to do our home work and make better grades how is it bad”? They said “because you don’t need to be in front of that screen“ as they sit and watch TV.
I know the feeling. They juat don't understand videogames, so they come up with excuses

Very impressive and so clear in getting his point across. Fantastic job of presentation especially for a 12 yr old. I'm sure his parents must be so proud of him! I would never have considered that video games could possible be good for children but Sean's talk has made me see these games in a different light.

i know quite a bit on this subject. call of duty is only a learning tool for teamwork, not much else..Its a Pretty simple and easy game, unless in a competitive team.

Firstly well done Sean great talk, great confidence. Using virtual tools a study was done for simulated surgery. Gamers had an easier time manipulating the tools than the doctors did.
I have seen the following skills being developed first through Roblox and then through Minecraft and Garrys Mod. Economics: on the games they trade and barter for items. Architecture: Building a huge building from the ground up. Strategy: How to think ahead. Engineering: Creating a working component from scratch. Teamwork: How to work with others to accomplish a common goal. Leadership: Directing others.
And best of all, blowing stuff up. You can not get better than that!
Kids also play games, because there is very little for us, kids to do. Like driving=racing game, airsoft=cod and sometimes parents dont let their kids do things.
Yes, parents have to admit that gaming isn't just bad for you.
But kids have it admit that running around with big guns and feeling powerful because you own people is a big part of the fun, too. It's not all about saving the planet.
Another thing: you can only be part of the competitive gaming community if you're a viable contributor. If you don't earn points for your team, you're out. One could argue that that's the exact opposite of a social society.

as much as i agree with you CALL OF DUTY has nohing to do with statigy in my opinon games suchas arma 2 and arma 3 or maybe even battlefeild 3 and 4 will have more of that aspect or even startigy games not shooters
War Aesthetics- there is strategy in COD, for example, if the whole enemy team is on the right side of the map where do u go to kill them, don’t go right side u go middle and go behind them.

I'm responding to a comment about code. I do code, and I'm thinking of buying a raspberry pi. In fact, video games inspired me to start coding in the first place, and although not all kids will do this, I hope that some or most do.

if you wanted to make the point of video games teaching strategy then COD should have been the last game to mention if at all. my report on this had more examples and far more facts than this kids.

Hopefully the online games are played on wired devices with wired headphones too, otherwise you’ll expect all kinds of brain damage including tinnutus, headaches, heart palpitations, anxiety, ANGER(when you get killed digitally), bleeding noses and brain tumours. Also, being sociable doesn’t mean sitting alone in your bedroom in your pj’s with no contact with your parents for weeks(says Sean), whilst speaking to a 2D image on a TV. Before I share my opinions hats off to you Sean Henderson for a great talk and convincing talk... I just don't agree that video games play a role in technology AT ALL for the present or the future in that case. If you want children to affect the future of technology and learn skills of decision making get them a raspberry pie and teach them how to code. Get them an arduino to get started on basic electronical engineering its simple real technology is that not playing COD its actually learning technology for what it actually is.
Teaching your kids strategy through 1st person shooter games will teach your kids to be 1st person shooters.

Video games RUINED my life. i cant stop playing sure i might be able to make quick decisions but when will i use them if all i do is play video games? video games is like drugs!
a youtube account well that is your own fault. There have been tons of studies that have said people with addiction issues shouldn’t play video games. It’s also just kind of a general rule of life that if you feel like you’re getting addicted to something, try to shorten your usage.
