I love the sound of a bassoon in a jazzy piece. Check out the bassoon solo in this piece from a great PBS show from my youth. Enjoy! ruclips.net/video/pNmYYxq7t3k/видео.html
@@rodrigoodonsalcedocisneros9266 Yeah because bassoon is even harder to get a nice tone out of (?) Double reed instruments are usually way harder to control overtones, so harder to shape your overall tone.. (there's a lot that can go wrong, more so as with single reed instruments)
Wow. Tried playing bassoon for a hot minute back in the day. Easily one of the most difficult instruments to get started on. Honestly didn't think the instrument could do what you're doing with it. Mad props. Just amazing.
@@Android_Warrior Haha - tried that, too (composition majors had to take lessons on a bunch of instruments). Found out I'm not very good at double reeds. Piano is more than enough of a challenge for me.
It was my first wind instrument in high school, I wanted to play sax or drums 😆 I've played lots of instruments, only one I gave up on was French horn. 😝
At first, I had thought of the sound to be similar to a hybrid between a clarinet and tenor sax. But the more I listen to it, damn did I not expect bassoon to slowly engrave itself into my brain. I absolutely love your playing!
The timbre of bassoon truly and beautifully matches the essence of this song in miles original conception. Truly thoughtful nostalgic sounds, sweet and maybe a tinge sad. And the man behind the horn captured that perfectly too. Great freakin job!
One of the first musicians to use basoon in jazz was Illinois Jacquet and I had the pleasure of hearing him play. Another jazz bassoonist is Michael Rabinowitz. Well done playing and phrasing here my friend. Excellent!!
I saw and heard Frank Tiberi play bassoon with the Woody Herman band in the late 1970"s, probably 1979. Frank was the lead tenor player with the band normally.
@@gladstone6338 thanks for the feedback. He will be 94 in December and I believe still leading the Woody Herman orchestra. He plays several other woodwinds as well
Wow! I never thought I would see such an iconic classical instrument in a Jazz context. Very well done; love the woody, organic sound of the basson (always have) and look forward to your future Jazz ventures with this beautiful instrument.
Ok, so im only 17 but i would consider myself an ok jazz musician. My main instruments are tuba and trumpet. I love bassoon and just started playing it today, and it may be one of the hardest things ive ever done. I have tenfold respect for you now, not only as a fantastic jazz player, but for being able to accomplish all that on that instrument!!
This is great!!! I've been a fan of jazz all my life and never thought about a bassoon as a jazz instrument. It really works! You have shown this instrument has never been used to its full capacity.
Can't add much to what has been said already. Beautiful. I've always loved the sound of the baritone/bass reeds (bari sax, bass clarinet, bassoon) but never seen a bassoon featured in a jazz ensemble. I'm so glad YT put this in my feed. Can't wait to hear more.
I asked if I could join jazz band as a bassoon and they said " what are you gonna do swiddle your bassoon" i wish bassoon and Jazz were so much more known ;-;
Wow this is an amazing thing that you just did. Bravo. Great band! And this is high compliment from me as not a natural jazz lover. But. This is nailed!
You are INCREDIBLE! Such impressive tone and intonation. This made my day! I haven't had the pleasure of hearing bassoon in jazz pieces until today. My friend heard me listening to this and thought it was a saxophone- lol. Take care and keep it coming, I love this! Thank you so much!!!
Very smooth. Really pleasant rendition. Note for the drummer: when you switch to sticks, your comping on the snare needs to be quieter, and barely there. Let the ride do the talking and comp more softly on that beautiful snare. You're SO close!!!!♥️
I played bassoon in our city youth orchestra When I was in Jr High / high school … I tried to get into jazz band at my school (grew up loving jazz) but the band leader wouldn’t let me play bassoon :(
What fun. When I was in music school back in the last millennium two of my fraternity brothers played bassoon and accordion duets. It was a fascinating combination. I wonder if you might have fun with some of the Great French Songbook? I wonder, too, if the pianist might move his right hand up an octave -- where he plays when he takes over solo. Most of his comping is right in the same range as the bassoon and one interferes with the other for my ears.
Bassoon and jazz is so underrated. I love this!
Man, all the tenor saxes that can't sound like Sonny Rollins should try bassoon lol

Tuba jazz is also underrated in my opinion

I love the sound..
5:28 props to the pianist lmao managed to sneak the mario kart lick in there
As a former bassooninst, I say ten thumbs up! It's about time the mellownesr of all woodwinds is featured as a jazz instrument.
Since when you play bassoon?
You crushed this.
If you ever made an album in this style, I would buy just sayin...
oh absolutely buy
totally!

edit: also that brushwork sounds so good
Yes! Drummers finesse is top notch.

It has the spirit of of the euphonium in it
This is so cool! What a beautiful tone and I appreciate you moving to let us see the other solos better. Awesome music!

Very well expressed, I completely agree.

There was a group called The Australian Jazz Quartet that used a bassoon

great playing all around! Love any band that lets the bass player get his. Also 97% sure that was the mario kart lick at around 5:25
lmao yup
went straight to the comments when I heard it lmao
same here
haaaaa cheeky
This is what I was waiting for! Jazz does not discriminate instruments!
this slaps so hard!! i love the low tones that the bass on creates and as a saxophone the bassoon has a distinct colour and timbre it’s great!
Wow you SLAYED that! I wish they wrote more jazz pieces for Bassoon. I would love to play them!
Thanks Evelyn! If you check the composition section of my RUclips page, I may have some compositions that fit what you're thinking of.
@@groovybassoon Will do! Thanks :)
You may play every tune on bassoon. Did you know that?
@@zzausel True, true. Just too lazy to transpose and notate it lol

Great playing by all of you
Played bassoon for 7 years and have played jazz piano for almost 20, could have never though how beautiful and good jazz bassoon could sound
This with a morning coffee is unmatched. Amazing stuff!
The absolute power of the bassoon is vibrating the camera
I never heard jazz on a bassoon before. I love it!
Joyful rendition of a lovely piece. Thank you!
Mario cart lick @ 5:28? ;) Love y'alls playing, beautiful.
YT was no kidding with this recommendation! so cool, what a vibe! you guys nailed it
Is a mix between a sax and a trombone! Amazing
origina l and good play...ist the style of bariton saxofon,,,sehr gut..!!!
Holy Smokes! This is amazing! I've never heard a bassoonist do this before!!
Every once in a while the RUclips algorithms get it right. This is so lovely- thanks for sharing.

Partly because bassoons are crazy expensive

Great to hear a bassoon tearing off good jazz, and young guys in general keeping great songs alive.
music is just the most beautiful thing ever created. what a world to live in.
exactly why I do what I do!
Basoon is a beautiful instrument and nice sound.
I d like to play it.
thank you!
Finally, the bassoon gets some respect. A former bassoonist thanks you.
Wow. I have way more appreciation for the bassoon after seeing this.
Wunderbar! Danke!
Wish this was on Spotify. Your tone sounds amazing!
This way of playing it reminds me of the Bill Evan's version ! Well done :)
Very cool!! Sounds very special'

And so does the Mario lick, LOL.

Props. Has chops. No flops. These kids can bop. Respect.
Beautiful tone and phrasing... Bravo!

Awesome. Miles Davis would be so proud of you all.
Amazing! So swinging...
jesus, the best thing the yt algorithm could spill out!!!!!

Very cool.
Kinda makes me wonder how it would blend with French Horn and Flügel in a jazz setting...
So fire
Played with such eloquence ! And to make it sound so hip on a great jazz standard...kudos brother ‼
Excellent drummer and all around amazing!
That is wonderful. Thank you.
Nice sound man, I did it. Someday my Prince will Come really works well on Bassoon.
Did not know I needed jazz bassoon
I love so much this rendition of the song! Congrats to you all!! Love the bassoon sound in this music! 😎
A beautiful instrument to play such a beautiful song on. How great is that.
The coolest bassoon tone I ever heard was through a Mu-tron Bi-phase. With the narrow long wave the long tones are exquisite.
So cool, never seen this before. It's like a muted trumpet with the versatility of a saxophone in terms of sound. Very nice stuff right here
Absolutely tasteful, and tasty, playing and sonority by all concerned. Thank you for sharing it! The bassoon sounds awesome in this context
I'm just getting into jazz, this is great!
Great, amazing sound…
I wanna stay this space together.
from Japan!!!!
Great jazz from a REAL bassoonist.
Bassoon sounding so lyrical... strange, unexpected, but beautiful!
Wow, great players and really well mic'ed/mixed bass
A nice treat. Hadn't thought of Bassoon and Jazz.

this reminds me of that album with Stan Getz, Bill Evans, Paul Chambers, and Philly Joe Jones
That was fantastic! Bassoons rule. With those awesome chops & crew I’d want to do a bebop version of Le Sacre du Printemps.
