How come you’re using screws instead of nails for the blocking ?
In the states were supposed to use nails because of sheer strength

Pure belt and braces on that floor, that's craftsmanship. We used to call them rose bud's, an old wet rag and a steam iron plus a quick sand with some 100g wet and dry paper. Job done 👍 🔨 🇮🇪

Great tip about adding loads of noggins. No doubt that’s why my new build squeaks like me knees! Will fix that when i add new carpet in the bedrooms.
You’ll need to add some screws to your floor when you take the carpet up to eliminate the squeak . New build carpenters would’ve nailed the chipboard down

Can never have too many noggins..
You could also use floorboard clamps to tighten it up which will allow for shrinkage of the timber.

First class floor that is, no twisted joists in the years to come, no creaking either.
Dead right - in my day with 2nd fix it was simple, my boss paid me well above the odds but deducted (20p for each hammer head mark).
You learn to be efficient and accurate very quickly.

Was always advised to use screws instead of nails to prevent squeaks. But I guess if the floorboards will be exposed then nails will look better. Also shouldn't there be a slight gap between the floorboards, say about 1mm, as the slight play and friction between the boards can also cause squeaks when walking on them....

Any reason why the noggins weren't staggered? It looks great but I thought they should never line up.
I've tried cheap squeeze clamps. Shite. Squeeze to hard and the bloody handles snap. Irwin you can squeeze as much as you like.
Have you tried ForgeFast screws? "Apparently" they're drive in really nicely and are reasonably priced! ;-)
Great video chaps. That's a seriously burly floor - and some amazing quality wood. I picked up some 4.2m 4x2s for a lighter job yesterday; from my trusted timber merchants... and the quality was shite... And... over £20 a length!!
That is one solid looking floor that won't be going anywhere soon! Why were you routing out a notch out at 1.48 on the video, was it to keep it level over the centre wall? 👍👍👍

Hi guys great channel and great work. Can you do a video on the structural integrity of screws over nails, there seems to be more and more people using screws for structural purposes and I was always taught to use nails as they don’t snap in sheer situations unlike screws. You could use your clout to talk to the manufacturers of straps hangers etc. just an idea

Hey Tony great job, quick question I have plans for my attic conversion which has suspended joist and it has an oxter detail (never heard of it except boats), drawing shows joists suspended from 2 parallel steels with cullen straps.....have you ever came across this before as it seems over kill rather than just use hangers....it also looks like the straps wrap up over and down both sides of joist (upside down U if you like)....just curious to see what you know about this detail (Scotland)

The detail that we have done so many times.
Purchase extra long leg jiffy hangers make Simpson.
Make sure the steel is 1/2 higher than the top of the ceiling joist then bolt timber into web and on top of steel and hang long leg hanger
In and wrap on top but all of this will need to be confirmed by your structural engineer.
We always use 70mm c24 floor joist with 70 hangers better job all the best Tony 👍
What screws are you using to put them straps in to what looks like stone
Looks great. I always thought you were meant to leave a 1-2mm gap between floor boards to allow for expansion?

The screws you like at 5:20 - are they Reisser R2 Cutter? If so what size do you use, 5x100? Just adding a load of noggins for my bathroom job and need some decent screws for it. Great work on this job btw!!

Hi Tony, brilliant video thank you! Can I ask is there a difference between the two varieties of cut clasp nails available? There’s an “L” shaped nail and then a “T” variation with a kind of nipple on the end. What do you go for? Thanks!

Brilliant tips Tony. Quick question I'm 18 in my final year of secondary school, would you recommend going into the trades Carpentry or advise against. Would love to hear your views and anyone else's I've been told several times by Carpenters and joiners to not go in to it and also by teachers. Love the videos 👍
Hi Mark thanks for your kind words. Mark I believe in living my life in following my dreams, I have always advocated this to my family and I would say the same to you be the lion, I have to disagree with the others, especially the teachers which should be encouraging you. What I can tell you it is very well paid and only going to increase because of a massive shortage of good labour, wages at the moment 50k plus I know guys who are on 75k at the moment. What ever trade you go into make sure you love it with a passion it will shine through. Joinery shops do not pay as much as being out on site but it’s we’re I started to learn my craft I was staining windows solid for six months be patient I lot of youngsters are not because they want it all now and it doesn’t work that way choose a great bloke to work with or company, do your home work research them ask lots of questions, a great example look what Ed did to work with Robin Clevett I commend people like Ed. Any way got to go and earn a crust I wish you all the best in your future plans and you can always DM on Instagram if you need any advice from an old git 😂 all the best Tony 👍

The more storage space you have, the more crap you store and I speak from experience. I love to see dedicated trades men do a fantastic job.

9:17 why use nails for flooring? There's a reason the world has moved on from using nails on floors: it's to stop squeaking. Screws stop floorboards from squeaking over time and allow you to easily lift up the boards for services if required.
I don’t think you understand the purpose of the video? It’s a Victorian house restoration restoring its old beauty and craftsmanship. It’s how it was done back then and it would look rubbish to screw the reclaimed boards.

@@leoanderson6862 LOL. They used metal straps to hold down the joists yet used nails for the floorboards. If you're picking and choosing what victorian methods to uphold during the restoration, it makes little sense to use nails on floorboards that will be coverered with carpet, LVT or laminate. Victorian restoration is about keeping those high celings, mouldings and other decorative woodwork... not using nails for floorboards LOL.
Hi AJ the metal straps that you are talking about are not holding anything up they are triangulating the roof, this has been specified by the engineer because of dropping the joist line which you can clearly see,
As for Lino, Carpet etc etc this will not be the case it’s going to be sanded and then polished as are a lot of old reclaimed floors are of today. It should be noted AJ that all the old coving and architraves and skirting are matched. I’am not to sure if you are in the trade but you will know or not know these are certain methods that can be applied in this detail to achieve a beautiful result all the best Tony 👍
