As an owner of a 1199s, I've done endless research on the heat issue. It stems from the coolant pump barely circulating coolant when the bike is coasting or at low revs. The pump was designed to be most efficient when the engine is under high loads on track. I actually can't fault Ducati for taking this design route.
@@freedeworld it's doesn't "overheat",it's a Ducati characteristic, they're known for running hot in town and low speed, they throw out a lot of heat, the temperature gauge might read higher than a Japanese bike but they're not in the red zone, as you say the fan kicks in when the temperature does get a bit too high but nothing to worry about,it soon comes down again.
@@freedeworld It's not a setting as much as the engineering of the cooling system. You have to make design compromises, a system that flows enough GPH (or LPH in the rest of the world) to cool at low speed and low RPM would flow too much to cool efficiently at high speeds/high RPM. The water needs to be in the radiator long enough to radiate heat to the atmosphere, you can't escape physics.

Re lubing/adjusting the chain: because it has a single sided swingarm, getting it on a paddock stand is a doddle, and adjusting the chain is easy peasy, as one can't get the wheel out of line. I haven't done the chain on one of these, but reckon it's much the same as it was on my 916 many years ago. Thanks for a really good review, as usual.

Hi TMF, I'm not really into Panigale's although I agree they looks the dogs bits. This is a top review, great video. Well thought out and executed. Enjoyed watching thanks.
Jesus that’s ridiculous insurance. I’ve had full A licence in Ireland since 07. I’m 40, been off bikes for 6 years. Lost all no claims bonus and it’s costing €850. The Irish market is usually ridiculous compared to the UK. I did do a rider skill assessment (axa insurance assessment to see how good a driver you are) got a grade 2. So that helped but still, huge difference.
Insurance is an interesting point here. I certainly agree with TMF about being indicative. I looked at a Panigale V4 end of 2019 (eventually bought a 2019 Honda Fireblade due to £). Insurance quote for the V4 as about same as TMF; circa £1300 for the year fully comprehensive. I'm in a better financial position now, so am fortunate enough to be considering a V4 again, but as a 3rd bike alongside the Fireblade and my Ducati Monster S2R. Insurance quote is now £545 for the V4. That being said, my circumstances have also changed; I'm now 30 years old whereas I 28 back then, I'm now married, and also a homeowner too. Things like this make an enormous difference here in the UK.

Heat is a problem with all powerful bikes and cars, the more power the engine generates, the greater the amount of heat is produced. These bikes are designed to be ridden fast, so crawling around town at low speed is not going to get rid of the heat fast enough... Great bike, great review...

Valid point about the insurance TMF. Insurance use to be the first thing you checked out before buying your new pride and joy but it seems nowadays it’s the thing that buyers do after they have placed their order and arranged the handover. The best (worse) example of this is the issues that BMW owners have had with insuring the R1200GS Rallye. The vast majority of insurance companies don’t recognise the model even though it has been around a while now. The nearest they get to is the R1200GSA Rallye. That one is worth checking out on line to see just how many people had issues with that. Great review Sir! David

Great review. I have the Speciale which, as you know, is a V4s with special bits and numbered. I love my bike. It is so much nicer to ride than my Desmo D16RR! That is one brutal machine. I use my Desert Sled around town.
Might have been worth mentioning the lithium ion battery, which helps make the bike light but means you’ll need a dedicated charger. The tyres are nice and sticky, but you’ll probably need a new set every year, which I would have included in the likely running costs. Another great video.
Why? I have lithium batteries on all my bikes. They hold their charge much longer. That's one of the reasons for having them. If you are referring to the desulphation mode with some chargers, I just use one without the desulphation mode. But as i said they rarely need topping up.
Great review sir! Insurance cost bit steep! But with your 9 points it's no surprise.. 😂 never mind fuel gauge I love the GSXR miles till empty indicator! Would be lost without that
Ha what a joke, i used to pay that on my R125, then when I did my A2 and got an Ninja 650 I initially paid 1600, thats CHEAP but then again, for each person, their own, mind you the insurance i'm talking about for my bikes were all with CLEAN license, no claims bonus as much as possible and in a relatively cheap area
LOL, I have traded in my Fire Blade and bought a VTR 1000 F FIRESTORM and love it:) no mamby pamby traction control or ABS just seat of the pants Thrills:)
Here is the deal. When necessary, the hidden miles to empty indicator will send a signal to the hidden gps. From then on it's hands off and the bike will ride itself the the nearest petrol station. This is the reason for the stratospheric price for this motorbike. 😂😎
Certainly couldn't use it as a general purpose in Australia with our roads. Having owned an R80GS that's the sort of bike you for touring, exploring back roads between Melbourne and Canberra.
@@Kickassdave The problem with Sports bikes in Australia is that there is no nowhere you can enjoy more than a fraction of their potential apart from track days. Owing to saturation fixed, mobile speed cameras and the like, your chances of getting caught are pretty high. That's why large capacity adventure bikes that allow you to explore Australia on road and off are a much more sensible, worthwhile investment.
What a weapon, cheers. Just to say (sort of related), if you only have a side stand there is a good little bit of kit that you put on the ground (front or back) that you roll the bike onto and it has two rollers on bearings so you can turn the wheel (front or back not both at once unless you had two). Great for fiddling and chain lubeing, cheap too, just sayin. 😊
My favourite thing about the panigales is that their colour is just absolutely amazing It’s like coca colas red, perfectly tailored, beautiful and couldnt be more beautiful in any other colour
Yeeeah mate, this is one of the very few ''full screen vids'' grab a special beer and enjoy the weekend. this should be a proper big brother for my 939 SP..
This video of the vr4 with an akrapovic exhaust fitted and it sounds simply incredible, you can hear how the engine pick up is more crisp with short throllte blips. Such an amazing bike @
Great review. Still cant warrant buying V4S Corse yet because of the insurance. £1855 lowest quote so far. Never claimed, 42 years old, live middle of nowhere in North Devon. I pay £220 a year fully comp for an MT09, BMW R65, KTM 450 EXC-F and a custom CB250, i dont understand why the insurance is so ridiclous for the V4!
Great video and really appreciate your thoughts on the practical considerations. I too am in love with the bike but had a niggle in the back of my mind about it being practical and maybe intimidating. You’re vid has now put me at ease on both of those so thanks so much.
Great review, practical costs and break down. Lets face it, many who buy this may well fall into two camps. 1) those that can afford it and don’t care what the costs are. 2) those that will not be able to afford it and buy it anyway. Bare that in mind when buying a second hand one guys.
Another fantastic review Mr. TMF but what's wrong with the camera in the garage? I first thought it was my eyes, but no, the camera goes in and out of focus continously! Maybe it's the lovely Ducati who is to blingy? 😂😂😂
Yes it's a shame - that's a mirrorless panasonic that seems to struggle in the man cave - have recently gone back to my old Nikon DSLR in there or even the GoPro7......
Referencing bikes you’ve reviewed, I’d like to hear you discuss engine configurations. They all have a character, but characterizing that character is a task I think you’d be able to nail.
Thank you for your terrific review - again. Like you, i have an 899 which I regard as my dream machine (The Scalpel) - but it's nice to know what else is out there. Probably like everyone who rides - I envy Michael Neeves - lucky duck touring around Europe on a Panigale V4, and he says he's at work!
TMF...You taking it easy in the wet on that with those Supercorsa's about same pace as me on similar roads on my BT023 shod Hornet CB600S !. In my defence I don't have ANY gadget trickery & it's my 1st winter riding a proper bike since DAS passed 3 months ago. Thanks for sharing...(saw a nice V2 yesterday at a regular stop). All the best.
I always just set things on a custom profile and have engine power settings all the way up but also traction control and such all the way up. One thing I’d love to try on the Ducati is the adjustable engine braking, as super sport bikes have such excessive engine braking for the track, it’s not so great for city driving.
I went with Ducati Insurance and have my new Harley breakout and Ducati V4s on the same. Policy and it was only £900 I’m 39 years old and have 3 years no claims and Ducati was the only Insurance company that would insure me as the others said the bike was to new and did not come up on there computers.
Great review , crazy insurance quote though, im 31 , been riding 5 years , 3 years ncb and quoted £398 fully comprehensive, and considering id do alot of my own maintenance such as brakes, oil changes etc, then it makes it wayyyy more affordable than I anticipated!! Infact, my current mt10 is more expensive to insure (£439) 🤯
@@danielhicks1566 I'm with Bennetts too and even though I had an extra years NCB this year they still substantially increased my premiums - Insurance is a law unto itself....
@@TheMissendenFlyer yeah its a bit crazy to be honest, its better to cancel and get a completely fresh quote ! I think they just bump the renewals up and rely on people just being okay with it, again, great review and il drop you a sub 😎 ride safe and lets hope this year is better all round !!
One other note, putting a lithium battery in helps with the starting clatter as it turns over a little faster and starts quicker. I had one on my Multi and it was much better, especially when a bit colder.
Mine has sat in the garage for 2 months pissing oil out of the oil cooler. Its yet another recall, going to have a different cooler fitted, but god knows when,Ducati are not exactly rushing things. The cam chain tensioner need to be tightened, that’s another recall, getting fed up

Excellent update as always! I had a plan to save for the next year to then look at getting a V4S, might need to save a while longer as that monthly running cost is a bit steep!
That insurance quote is way over the top , I phoned Carole Nash yesterday here in Ireland & I was quoted an extra € 132 until my insurance is up again next June ,I have 3 bikes with them , that was on a 2019 v4s valued at € 24 k !!
Great review as always. Regarding the lack of backlit switchgear, I have this on my 1260 Multistrada so don't see why Ducati couldn't put it on the V4. Maybe they figured that most V4s riders will generally only ride in the daytime. But for a bike of that cost you could be forgiven for expecting it, along with a fuel gauge!
Excellent review, very thorough indeed and very insightful with the running/owning costs to consider. I don't get why the engine has to spin a bit at start up before it actually runs. It does look extremely fast at a standstill....!!
TheMissendenFlyer The place does still look fairly dire, But must say that I went to St Louis and Henry Floyd schools and I've no complaints about them.
Another great reviewTMF, just amazes me how every bike made has usually some simple annoying idiosyncrasies, I can accept the rattles noisy motor, clutch, but to ride this machine in warmer climates or slightly congested traffic without special protection from heat, or not be able to navigate around tighter areas would surely take the love out of owning such a machine. I love you’re honest objective reviews and would hope manufacturers take into consideration you’re comments, surely this would make for a better product and happier customers, just saying.....
Great bike and a good honest review. Hopefully not spoiled your own Ducati for you!? Not going to happen is it:) The noise from that 899 is second to none.
Fantastic fair review Andy! If only Ducati had sought your opinion when designing the bike. Some of those niggles (and too many for a 24k bike) should really have been addressed before launch. So much so that even if I had the cash, they would seriously make me reconsider. But I understand those who are besotted with the brand, so tolerant of failings which are unforgivable really. But now I think, I don't know a single owner of one. Perhaps the few on the road are all Demos. That's why they are so expensive! How quirky is that.
As I've mentioned before, the 2015 Multi was first with back-lit switches I think. However, if KTM can put them on the 790 Duke and as you say, Triumph on a lot of their models, Ducati have no excuse for not having it on their flagship, especially when they have the tech in house already! Cheapskates! ;) Ditto the fuel gauge - although Ducati's history with those is a bit poor (understatement).
Great review MF. I liked how you considered a lot of the practical issues of riding the bike in real world conditions. You offered another perspective of bike review and brought a couple of things to my attention I hadn't considered. I test rode a V4s a few months ago and like yourself was a bit scared at the start but quickly grew in confidence and couldn't believe how easy and smooth it was at low speed, actually less jerky than my Duc Supersport. If only I could afford the bike and insurance, it has become my dream bike. Maybe if I save for 10 years I'll eventually have enough 😅
I think all fuel injected bikes have to have a fuel warning light,as you have found,as running them totally empty is not ideal from a mechanical perspective. My 1198 puts on the fuel warning light on and then starts counting the milage from when light comes on,when it gets to 12 miles get ready to push it!😉😀
I considered on on offer here in Australia. I was very suspicious about the exhaust heat which is a huge issue in our summers. Also luggage makes it just a weekender spin machine. The rest ide love.
Hi TMF great video as always love the bike that would surely be a keeper. Just an observation, I noticed when you went to pay for the petrol you left the keys in the ignition probably not a good idea given the scourge of bike thieves in the UK. However keep up the good work. Cheers
Enjoyed your review, I've got a base model and it's an amazing bike, it is flawed though, it hates being ridden around town as it has a horrible, grabby clutch and gets STUPIDLY hot!, for a trackday or a blast around the countryside though what a bike, only other thing is it doesn't sound as good as the RSV4 Factory it replaced in my case.
Yes I agree on all points, the sound is a bit disappointing, my 899 sounds much nicer! All Panigales get daft hot it seems....have you thought about fitting the throttle spacer to cure the snatch at low speed? Transformed my bike and fits all Panigales I think (search for "Panigale Throttle Spacer" to see my fitting video etc).....
@@TheMissendenFlyer Thanks I will look into it, it's more the clutch at low speed and pulling away I don't like too much to be honest, think we could both agree this bike would rather be 'making progress' it really isn't a good commuter. Have you ridden the Aprilia much?, that and the generation R1s sound the best to me, not that the Panigale V4 is bad sounding, it's just not as good.
I wasn't having a dig at you. Just that it would be an expensive bike to drop that you'd have to factor in. If I was rich and lived near Brans Hatch I'd love one. Have to have a Monster 1200 as a run about.
£1300 insurance to have THAT. I live in Central London and having a Ninja 300 costs more in insurance LOL! I wouldn't feel comfortable having this bike I'd expect it to get stolen even if I had it locked in a safe.
Amazing machine, and nice to hear someone who's not just overawed by it. Was it just my flaky eyes, or was the focus going in and out during the garage bits?
Mr TMF thanks for the review, very interesting. Gorgeous looking, sounds amazing, but damn that is a pricey proposition for the stable. But I guess if you have to ask how much...you can’t afford it. I feel your pain watching that gorgeous beast leaving your garage. It is magnificent. Peace!
Excellent review. Bit out of my price range although I have never been asked to leave Waitrose ( Banstead, fairly posh) just because I am on a Triumph.😁😁
Re touring: I'd be having panic attacks parking up one of these expensive ultra sport bikes anywhere other than a secure garage especially in any big city!
Great review TMF. I feel Peter Kay coming on, 'A bike that makes you feel special!' A bike to make you feel poor my friend! How much for insurance?? Great and useful review
Would be lost without that
Yes why don't all bikes have that, pretty much all cars (except mine) do these days!
Just keep it full??
LOL, I have traded in my Fire Blade and bought a VTR 1000 F FIRESTORM and love it:) no mamby pamby traction control or ABS just seat of the pants Thrills:)
Here is the deal. When necessary, the hidden miles to empty indicator will send a signal to the hidden gps. From then on it's hands off and the bike will ride itself the the nearest petrol station. This is the reason for the stratospheric price for this motorbike. 😂😎
Great video. And info about the bike.
Thanks!
Certainly couldn't use it as a general purpose in Australia with our roads. Having owned an R80GS that's the sort of bike you for touring, exploring back roads between Melbourne and Canberra.
With the Australian climate? You genuinely don't realise how much more practical a sports bike is in Australia than it is anywhere else
@@MrAndrew1953 ok I'm with you. That makes sense. Thanks for the response mate!
Yes good point!
My favourite thing about the panigales is that their colour is just absolutely amazing
It’s like coca colas red, perfectly tailored, beautiful and couldnt be more beautiful in any other colour
The dark art!
Great video and really appreciate your thoughts on the practical considerations. I too am in love with the bike but had a niggle in the back of my mind about it being practical and maybe intimidating. You’re vid has now put me at ease on both of those so thanks so much.
Not intimidating at all - one of the easiest sports bikes I’ve yet ridden!
Slick machine! What a very focused back road weapon.
I'd still take the Tuono and pocket the change for a holiday somewhere.
I loved the Tuono - but I'd have this over one any day....
Yes I have thought about that before....maybe I should....thanks!
Best v4 review I have watched!
Cheers!
Thanks for a great review. That insurance quote 😮 ouchy 😞
Great review as always TMF - That Insurance would 'sting' !
Fantastic review of an awesome bike, would love to have the opportunity to ride one but will have to stick with my Supersport and Monster, Thanks TMF
I always just set things on a custom profile and have engine power settings all the way up but also traction control and such all the way up.
One thing I’d love to try on the Ducati is the adjustable engine braking, as super sport bikes have such excessive engine braking for the track, it’s not so great for city driving.
Agreed that EBC is brilliant and makes the bike far more rideable....
I went with Ducati Insurance and have my new Harley breakout and Ducati V4s on the same. Policy and it was only £900 I’m 39 years old and have 3 years no claims and Ducati was the only Insurance company that would insure me as the others said the bike was to new and did not come up on there computers.
Good tip!
Wow - who was that with!

@@danielhicks1566 I'm with Bennetts too and even though I had an extra years NCB this year they still substantially increased my premiums - Insurance is a law unto itself....

By far the best review I've watched
Thank you!
One other note, putting a lithium battery in helps with the starting clatter as it turns over a little faster and starts quicker. I had one on my Multi and it was much better, especially when a bit colder.
Yes I have thought about that on my 899 - a bit of weight saving too....
Mine has sat in the garage for 2 months pissing oil out of the oil cooler. Its yet another recall, going to have a different cooler fitted, but god knows when,Ducati are not exactly rushing things. The cam chain tensioner need to be tightened, that’s another recall, getting fed up
Ho forgot. The clutch needs bleeding every couple of hundred miles, think there is a recall coming to replace the clutch line,it just goes on and on
Oh dear :0( Sorry to hear of your woes - Friday afternoon machine perhaps??

Most negative points I've head from TMF, normally there are a few points but not like these. Lovely bike!
They all fade into insignificance though when you ride it.....
@@TheMissendenFlyer Sir you were very clear on that in your review and round up.
Excellent update as always! I had a plan to save for the next year to then look at getting a V4S, might need to save a while longer as that monthly running cost is a bit steep!
Yes the most costly I've come across yet! But worth it I reckon, gorgeous bike.....
@@TheMissendenFlyer yes agreed, (, might need to sell a kidney.....or child :)
Always been a kawasaki fan, had the 2005 ZX10R, but this is a lovely looking bike, lottery ticket on, fingers crossed haha
Now this is a good review. Finally
I agree 100%
Excellent review, very thorough indeed and very insightful with the running/owning costs to consider. I don't get why the engine has to spin a bit at start up before it actually runs. It does look extremely fast at a standstill....!!
Thanks for the kind words Martin....
👍 Great review on a cool bike
I was born and went to school in Aylesbury so it was a trip down memory lane watching the beginning of your video.
Well done on your escape!

The place does still look fairly dire,
But must say that I went to St Louis and Henry Floyd schools and I've no complaints about them.
Cheers Gil - appreciate the kind comments!
Great bike and a good honest review. Hopefully not spoiled your own Ducati for you!? Not going to happen is it:) The noise from that 899 is second to none.
Exactly Simon - the V4 is beautiful and I'd have one in a heartbeat....but my 899 isn't too bad (and looks and sounds better IMO)....
Got a v2… shoulda got the v4
2019 Model Year Wing Mirrors are rock solid ! No vibration like the 2018 model year ones ✅👍🏼
Nice....
one of the great review for Ducati Panigale V4S
Thank you!
I am actually thinking about getting rid of my Harley Street Glide Special for this bike, I rode one and it's the best bike I've ever ridden.
Quite a change!
@@TheMissendenFlyer I was laughing like a madman riding the Panigale, and no bike has ever made me do that.
Really great, real world review! Top video! Thanks
Thank you for watching!
Another great real world review TMF. Can't help but lusting after this bike!
Yes she's gorgeous isn't she Spiros - not often a bike grabs me like this one did...
i bought this and i rode the v2 panigale for 4 years , this is much much more comfortable and easy to ride , in traffic asweel as on track .
Good point!
That's my plan!
I think all fuel injected bikes have to have a fuel warning light,as you have found,as running them totally empty is not ideal from a mechanical perspective. My 1198 puts on the fuel warning light on and then starts counting the milage from when light comes on,when it gets to 12 miles get ready to push it!😉😀
What a great review. Incredibly comprehensive. The heat would be an issue in Sydney. I wonder if the 959 mirrors can be swapped to this?
Do they fold on the 959 then? They do on my 899 but thought they stopped doing them after that.....
Nice. No one does night riding. Great!
Thank you....
I love your honest reviews. Thanks so much for the info/riding impressions-cheers!!!!
You’re welcome!
Real and deep overview ever. Simple great video. Congratulation
I considered on on offer here in Australia. I was very suspicious about the exhaust heat which is a huge issue in our summers. Also luggage makes it just a weekender spin machine. The rest ide love.
Yes all Panigale's run wickedly hot.....the heat shield I have fitted helps....
Wonderful in-depth review!
Cheers Pete!
Hi TMF great video as always love the bike that would surely be a keeper. Just an observation, I noticed when you went to pay for the petrol you left the keys in the ignition probably not a good idea given the scourge of bike thieves in the UK. However keep up the good work. Cheers
...I didn't leave them in the ignition....
Hi TMF any plans of riding the Ducati Hypermotard 950 2019 ??? Great video again 👍🏻👍🏻
No plans but would love too!
Awesome review, very informative. Please review the Aprilla 1100?
I've definitely subbed.....great job.
I’d love ago on the 1100!! ...and welcome along!
Have you ridden the Aprilia much?, that and the generation R1s sound the best to me, not that the Panigale V4 is bad sounding, it's just not as good.
absolutely loved the honest review, ty
Glad you liked it! Thanks for watching - Andy
I wasn't having a dig at you. Just that it would be an expensive bike to drop that you'd have to factor in. If I was rich and lived near Brans Hatch I'd love one. Have to have a Monster 1200 as a run about.
Did you put the ignition key back in the switch whilst you went and paid? 🙈 Great video!
Nope
£1300 insurance to have THAT. I live in Central London and having a Ninja 300 costs more in insurance LOL!
I wouldn't feel comfortable having this bike I'd expect it to get stolen even if I had it locked in a safe.
The insurance is what put me off, waiting for the new v4 monster :)
Yep and thats a quote for a mature man with most probably no claims and good record with the cops. Some could double that or be refused.
What a cracking review. Love the garage. Would you trade your 899 for a V4S if you could though?
Sadly....yes.
Amazing machine, and nice to hear someone who's not just overawed by it. Was it just my flaky eyes, or was the focus going in and out during the garage bits?
Yes that camera hunts a bit - annoying isn't it!
@@TheMissendenFlyer Manual focus time -should be ok if you're aperture isn't too big (and you don't move too much)
Sounds like a Ducati. The RC30/45 sounded so good, quality V4 engines.
Sounds more like a v-twin tho
Mr TMF thanks for the review, very interesting. Gorgeous looking, sounds amazing, but damn that is a pricey proposition for the stable. But I guess if you have to ask how much...you can’t afford it. I feel your pain watching that gorgeous beast leaving your garage. It is magnificent.
Peace!
Cheers Graden - it was a bit of a wrench letting this one go I have to say, not many bikes that I borrow that I really would like myself...
Excellent review. Bit out of my price range although I have never been asked to leave Waitrose ( Banstead, fairly posh) just because I am on a Triumph.😁😁
Nothing low grade about a Triumph!
I could understand if you were a spotty noob with no experience, but a, ( and I say this with the greatest of respect), middle aged gent who obviously lives in a nice area, that's a crazy price. Keep up the good work.
