One of the best narratives on these 4 bikes Ive seen. I'm waiting on delivery of a new Panigale V4 and love getting the low down on how it performs. Rock Solid Job MCN!
This is the first ever Ducati that I can imagine myself owning, and I'm a dyed in tbe wool Aprilia V4 lover, but the new Ducati beats it for me. I hope Aprilia have plans for a new RSV4, but until then the V4 Duc is my new object of desire
I've had both the old RSV4 and recently The Tuono so I understand where you're coming from in terms of making the switch. But after I test rode a V4 S I was sold! Just waiting for delivery now. Make the move my friend you WILL NOT be disappointed! Good Luck.
I will be making my purchase in November 2018, I am hoping Aprilia comes to the table... Mostly they need to fix that muffler.. come one.. your Italian make it look sexy like the Ducati!
I love Hondas. Had cbr600, I wanted new Blade so bad, I was really hyped, seemed like a perfect bike for me. Then I tested it... It's so tiny it is ridiculous! I am a tall rider, I finally bought a used 1199 Panigale which is like a touring bike when comparing with the Blade! It's ridiculous! We do use these bikes to go on short trips and even commute as well. It may sound strange but for me Panigale with comfort seat is like a touring bike in comparison to the CBR!!
It does seem rather obvious if you think about it. For years manufacturers kept pushing the technology to squeeze an extra 2hp out of the same engine blocks year after year, and often have done it at the sacrifice of the midrange that people actually use on the road. The 4 cylinder superbikes now rev to 14k+ and are just as peaky as the supersports when people mostly used to buy liter bikes because they didn't like the extremely revvy engines and preferred more torque. What's wrong with just making a bigger engine?
Probably my favourite MCN review in a long time, thanks Michael. I've read a lot about the Panigale V4 but this is the first time I've understood some of the nuances, such as the feel of the initial power delivery in lower revs or comparing it briefly to the RCV and noting that it is first and foremost a road bike, but an exceptional one. Thank you.
This was a really, really good in-depth summary of the new Ducati and the other bikes there too. Had some great comments on the Honda too. And like he said, they are all bikes at such a high level anyway. Great piece of journalism. THANKS
The 2020 Fireblade, with the obligatory 2 or 3 kg weight saving and 10-15hp gain will dominate things again with its trademark smoothness, lightness and agility. This underpowered 2017MY still beats pretty much all its competitors! Plus, judging by the brand's past record it will be reliable (Ducati, Aprilia and BMW probably not so much).
Michael, I love your reports as you are always honest and spot on with your comments. This is a brilliant review and was looking for a 1299 V the new V4 and you have done it and hit the nail on the head. Well done. Take the rest of the week off.
What a great test! I really appreciate that you also took the 1299 into comparison. Owning a 1299 Panigale I recently drove the new V4. And it feels exactly like stated in this test: You really don't notice how bloody fast the new bike really is. But at the end of the ride I was exhausted because of the pure speed and acceleration whereas the 1299 feels demanding right from the start. I must admit that still haven't decided whether I should switch to the V4. Unfortunately I can't afford to have them both 🙁
Very surprised the RSV4 brakes faded ? I've had 3 RSV4's and currently have a 2017 and the brakes are excellent (including on track fast group) I am 5'9 and the RSV4 is the most comfortable sports bike for me - just goes to show personal preference & ergonomics makes a massive difference, I rode the Blade last year and hated it ! But the new Ducati is epic, it really is special no denying. BUT, with all their differences & individual traits the Blade, RSV4 and new Ducati were all within a second a lap - whichever you feel most comfortable on will be the best for you.
I ran the stock Brembo pads until they wore out then switched for SBS-RS now on EBC GP-FAX. Pads tend to last me around 1000 miles maximum mixed track & road use - I swap fluid out every year so recently flushed through with RBF660 but I ran the stock fluid for the first 12 months. They are the same Brembo setup Ducati etc. use and the ABS is switchable on the RSV4 unlike the Blade or R1 etc. which are terrible on track. Nobody ever faults the RSV4 Brakes, unless the pads were worn out ?
I have also got some Brembo HPK discs on mine now, but the brakes only faded when the pads wore out on a 3 day trackday, swapped in new pads and bingo all sorted. if the pads are good & have meat on them then no issue. I also have an R1M - same issue as Blade, on track the ABS goes into meltdown !
@@joaosoares3719 I have the 1100 factory tuono, 2016 model, it has 20000km and has not missed a beat, not a SINGLE thing has gone wrong. According to the internet trolls it should have broken like 4 times by now. Just saying
Ive ridden all bikes and I still prefer the rsv4 RF, for £18k with free Aka exhaust is a great deal and it sounds like a V4 not like the Ducati. The best solution is to ignore the journalists and test ride all super bikes and pick the one you would most like to have in your living room when your not riding it.
There is no doubt the V4S is smooth and powerful, but some of us like the sound and feel of the V Twin, with it’s terrible city manners, it’s more fun to ride and try to tame. It spits and snarls, and you need to feather the clutch...and it takes more motorcycling skill to ride properly. I had a 2016 Aprilia V4 and it just never got me excited to ride. But when I go to the garage and fire up the Twin, it makes me smile just like my GT350 does when I hit the start button.
My Current Superbike Garage Inventory and my order of my favorites( All of these bikes are in the garage now, as of July 2018: #1 Ducati V4, #2 Ducati V4, #3 MV Agusta F4RR, #4 Ducati 1299s, #5 Aprilia RSV4 RF #6 Ducati 1198s V4 is leaps over the other competition by far. I have more bikes but these are in direct competition of each other. I had the Honda as well, smooth bike but not in the same class. I liked the V4 so much, I have 2
Really enjoyed this review. Been waiting to see how the V4S stacked up against some of the best superbikes and I think you've got it spot on. I just finished a carbon 1299 build so I've been riding that bike for half a year and after jumping on the V4S every part just feels improved and more refined. And it does just grow on you the more you ride it the more you love it. Can't wait to see the proper group test later this year!
The tft screen on the Honda is perfect, its not to small at all, they were trying to save weight, so why would they add weight with a huge screen? Trust me people everytime i ride my SP2 I never think the screen needs to be bigger. All i can think about is how wickedly fast the bike is and how incredible it feels at any speed!! The Honda is legit in every area!!!
Glenn Paladini hey did you get the 1299 I had one for three years Currently have the Aprilia Test ride a V4s and ride my friends V4s lots I still preferred my 1299 It was lean and lighter Lots of torque out of the corners Only got spot was the right leg at times in slow traffic The V4s just blew hot air up all the time The 1299 was very raw and wild but the electronics worked great and never any reason ever to back off the throttle For me it was a awesome bike Like a wild horse dude You knew you were on a motorcycle
Hell yes I took $25,000 Aprilla to the track ! The Aprilla has the best set up for me I’m 5’11” I haven’t been on the new Honda but I had the old one. 2012 This Honda the new ones strong point is the mid turn acceleration . You were complaining about the bricks but if you change the pads are going to get a different feel for the brakes . They virtually all use the same break calipers right ?
I could tell he likes the honda. Lol *stares intently at calipers. Honda needs to release a race spec unlock for the wheelie control and abs. The v4s is phenomenal I see someone finally got it to wheelie before the crank pulls it down. Amazing bike!
Mmm well done Michael I actually loved the honest review and yes finally Ducati have finally made a great ROAD bike ....and a game changer .... well done
HornyHusky47 I saw I but I’m still not fluent in Italian so it’s hard to catch what they really want to convey, all I know is the Brakes are better on V4... I’d like to see a detailed review about both and strength & weaknesses because there both the closest things to there Grand Prix bikes.
Fantastic video! Seems Ducati really did their homework! I just tested the RSV4 RF last week and for me it just felt heavy and too “big”. (176 cm in height ..) The engine, built quality and everything is definitely second to none but compared to a Japanese it doesn’t feel that trust giving and easy to play with. Best
I was out of the saddle for the longeest time of my life: 4 years. During that time i would occasionally look at the Aprilia RSV4. By the time i finally pulled the trigger and went to purchase, i sadly found absolutely NO Aprilia dealers near me anymore. Both had closed down(dropped Aprilia). I read more on this and found that this is a nationwide thing in the US now. So, i opted for the bike i had also been very curious to drive: The new Yamaha R1. If i would've been willing to drop 25k i would've no doubt went with the Panagale. I spent 10k less and, while i know it's not close to the feeling of a V4, the crossplane engine IS something i suggest anyone to experience. It's entirely different than any other inline 4 i have ever ridden. Pretty happy with it, still wish Aprilia would have more of a dealership foothold in the midwest though.
The Ducati is a fantastic evolution of the superbike class. There is no doubt it's now the king and I hope to get to ride this. However I still absolutely love my 2016 s1000rr and still find this bike amazing to ride on both trackdays and the road. I'm keen to see what the next release from BMW is in 2019 or 2020 - will they stun like they did in 2010, which really made all other bike manufacturers sit up and kicked off this entire evolution of the superbike class.
Sensing a lot of anti-Aprilia sentiment in this one. Interestingly, I've never once heard of any of the complaints about the RSV4 from ANY other source before. The brake fade and squirrely handling in particular don't mesh with anything else I've ever heard about the bike. Every other publication praises the M50 Brembos and the "on-rails" nature of the Aprilia's handling. Contrarily I have heard plenty of criticism of the V4S in terms of handling, i.e. twitchiness/nervousness. Methinks there may have been a bit of Ducati fanboyism in this one mates...
love the panigale, it would be the perfect bike if it sounded as good as the Aprilia V4 engine. As always great review by Michael, best reviewer out there.
Ive just brought a 2018/19 RSV4 RR and i honestly don’t know what you’re saying when you say the Aprilia is a little heavy as that’s the first thing that struck me about the bike is just how light it is!!
Amazing and professional review. I wish you will do more with another class bikes... Very useful that you tell the times on the circuit. Congratulations and a like for you!
As an rsv4 owner I don’t understand how you say it’s uncomfortable for a tall rider. I’m 6’1” and I can barely get both of my feet on the ground at a stop. It’s never felt cramped for me. Maybe the pegs are a bit higher for ground clearance as I’ve seen from other reviews people are dragging toes all over the track on the panigale
I have both 17 Aprilia Tuono V4 and the new Panigale V4. Both are incredible in their own. I prefer Tuono for the street and Pani for the track. Pani is just way to fast for the street use to be in its sweet spot, while Tuono has torque and engine feel perfectly suited for the street
Great video, always love you comparisons, paired with content, great video and sound quality. Quote: "Boys and their toys. No one needs any of it." Haha, so true.
Thanks Michael! A well informed, detailed comparison.I'm looking forward to an extnded test of the V4S when in Italy this July at WDW2018. And then buying the V4R for myself next year. - Jim Gianatsis / FastDates.com
Crazy to think that by some this machines are consider simply "road bikes". For me they are speed track and race machines, adapted to be used on the road. Come on now, they are capable of 200mph, 0-60 in a couple of seconds, and 1/4 miles in 10 or less. Nobody in the road really need that... people racing do...
I used to have a 2004 zx10r... The way these guys carry on you would think the Ducati is a crazy wild beast. No it's tame in comparison. I now own a 2015 Ducati Panigale R and it's so much nicer to ride around. It actually feels tame compared to the zx10r. Yes it's a lot more power but it is so much easier to control. I'll give a review later on, really any new liter bike is quite nice.
Ayush Sharma they probably won't for a while. they're a very small firm compared to the rest also they are in a similar situation as the s1000rr, the original bike was so good when it came out that just now the other bikes are catching up, so no need to overhaul everything completely
Good review but I think you should have mentioned that the Ducati V4 S cost $10000 more than the Honda and the Aprilia, here in New Zealand anyway. I would suggest the standard Ducati V4 would be more suited for this test, in terms of price at least.
Ol so you have a counter rotating crank which does x, y and z. But will you notice that on the road? Assuming you are going really hard in good conditions on a road you know?
Srs tho neevsy... put zo4 pads on all pls and i thought the new rf had ttx ohlins rear and 25mm carts for the front, surprized they aren't good enough??
from what I am hearing is that all of these comments are centered around someone who is at the top of the riding skill range, someone who knows how to push the bike and get all of it. But the majority of the riders buying these bikes are the blokes who have money to blow and are NOT track junkies. I would be interested in hearing what these bikes are going to be like for the average joe who is going to buy them and ride them daily.
I didn't like the leaked photos of this and wanted a new bike at the time so I bought the last of a big racy twinL... But the bike now makes me wish I waited and bought one. But if someone wanted to trade my 1299s for the same mileage v4 I still wouldn't let go of it that easily...... the 1299s just looks simply lovely to me but the v4 is the future sexy look. but I feeling happy buying new a is what it is bike.
you ask "would you take your 25 grand bike on the track to then bin it", but would you rather ride it on the road to get mashed by someone not giving way? which would be much more on the cards
What to do? I love my ZX14 will never sell it, it's paid off and I've done everything one can think of from turbocharging it to carbon fiber rims and entire fairing. All I have is comfort and power but no electronic wizardry not even ABS. I get email this morning having the Vs at $33K plus taxes Canadian here is the best part 60 months at 0% interest, even with zero down! Is it worth it? Is it much better than the regular V model at $24K but can't get that one at zero percent financing, therefore just the interest alone in 60 months is $5k around. This sale is for 48 hours only. The electronics is mind blowing, love the electronic suspension. Any help would be appreciated.

I really appreciate the knowledge being given in these reviews from someone that truly gets down with these machines.
love the panigale, it would be the perfect bike if it sounded as good as the Aprilia V4 engine.
Aprilia did what you asked RSVFactory 1200 what a machine!
Just speechless an awesome video for bikers especially petrolheads.
Does the blade still come with a box full of neutrals?
Yup and a dodgy throttle.....and wheelie control
Yes
They didnt mention the 6 recall issues for the v4 that have to be fixed once you buy it.
Great video, always love you comparisons, paired with content, great video and sound quality. Quote: "Boys and their toys. No one needs any of it." Haha, so true.
In-line fours "quite bland" meaning smooth, that's a good thing.
Why can't you disconnect the ABS on the Honda? I have a ZX-10R ABS and I just remove the fuses when I ride the track.
Thanks Michael! A well informed, detailed comparison.I'm looking forward to an extnded test of the V4S when in Italy this July at WDW2018. And then buying the V4R for myself next year. - Jim Gianatsis / FastDates.com
This was an excellent video gentman
Great review guys
Ducati needs to make a V4 streetfighter!
CycleCruza you need to stop making those shitty top 5 vids
Yes, definitely would be brutal 😃
top 5 comment ever 🏆
Yes wheelies for days
CycleCruza you need to rethink your life
Quality Video with awsome editing skills.
How come you don't add the MV Agusta F4 RC in that round of bikes to see what it do?
Or just do a review on MV Agusta F4?
Crazy to think that by some this machines are consider simply "road bikes". For me they are speed track and race machines, adapted to be used on the road. Come on now, they are capable of 200mph, 0-60 in a couple of seconds, and 1/4 miles in 10 or less. Nobody in the road really need that... people racing do...
We should call them dual sports. Track bikes you can ride to the track!
Why do these tests never have any MV's?
Can't believe you excluded the R1m!
Man that panigale is beautiful....WOW
Amazing work here guys. Great video 😁
All these bikes are incredible but I love my Fireblade 😁🏍
Good job Kneevesy! Question: if could have only 4 sport bikes in your garage. I’d be interested to know which ones you’d choose???? Cheers....
Ducati panigale 1299s looks much sexier tbh
kiribetio123 Couldn’t agree more, well said. I don’t know why the rave on about the V4 S.... It looks meh...
@@DuzBee It looks almost identical lol
Now the 1x98 series, those were the real lookers, most beautiful bikes Ducati ever made.
Sérgio Alves Haha if that’s what you think... Scarlett Johansson looks like Lady Gaga but I still know which one I prefer so what if it aye
kiribetio123 agree
I had a 1299 and when I went for a new bike I just didn’t like the looks of the V4s
Have we heard anything about a new Aprilia superbike? That RSV4 is coming up to 10 years now and I haven't heard a squeak about a replacement.
Ayush Sharma they probably won't for a while. they're a very small firm compared to the rest
also they are in a similar situation as the s1000rr, the original bike was so good when it came out that just now the other bikes are catching up, so no need to overhaul everything completely
Oso 11 there will be a completely overhauled S1000RR next year.
I have a 2017 and have been told by my dealer there is one on the way probably for 2019
Is good enough for anyone and anywhere for you and me to ride below its potential
Sean C can you repeat that in English?
Where is the bmw s1000Rr. That is the benchmark in the 1000cc league
Nah man that's vintage now.
Great video! Must have been hard to find fault in what we normal riders would consider mechanical perfection.
I must say I enjoy the Hondas engine sound even on standard pipe 👍👌
Good review but I think you should have mentioned that the Ducati V4 S cost $10000 more than the Honda and the Aprilia, here in New Zealand anyway. I would suggest the standard Ducati V4 would be more suited for this test, in terms of price at least.
Niels Christian Andersen in USA its $21k vs $17k. On Panigale V4 standard vs Honda Blade. You must be comparing the V4S.
Looks like a sick refined machine!
Ol so you have a counter rotating crank which does x, y and z. But will you notice that on the road? Assuming you are going really hard in good conditions on a road you know?
I love the new Ducati, and can't wait for a review on the V4R when it comes out. Honda has done nothing to impress me since the blackbird. (CBR1100XX)
That cornering wheelie 0:54🔥
Really want to give this a try. My 1199 is just short of miserable to ride on the streets
Great review, but the last thing I would call my V4S is plush and comfortable.
So if they sort out the Blade’s ABS, it might have a chance to catch up to the V4 Duc?
Run the BMW HP4 vs the Ducati 1299 V4 in track and street
How’s the Ducati v4s gonna fit into WSBK? They gonna change the regulations to get it in?
you ask "would you take your 25 grand bike on the track to then bin it", but would you rather ride it on the road to get mashed by someone not giving way? which would be much more on the cards
Can you maybe do a shoot out on the v4 r1m and 2020 s1000rr??
