You're so right about listening. All you have to do is put yourself in a country state of mind to appreciate country music AND the lyrics. Same with any other genre of music. When I'm in New Orleans, I put myself in a jazz state of mind. When I'm listening to rap, I put on my "rap ears." R&B, rock, anything. If you put yourself in whatever mood it is supposed to be, you can appreciate anything. Good music is just good music. That's all there is to it.
Back in the day, and even still now, in the honky tonks it goes-- Hank Jr-- Why do you drink? Audience--"to get drunk" Hank Jr--Why do you roll smoke? Audience--"to get stoned" Hank Jr.--Why must you live out the songs that you wrote? Audience--"to get laid"😎😆🎶🎸🎵🎸
Can confirm. I ran sound for some country bands in TX and every single time they played this song the crowd was signing that. Every time someone put it on the jukebox between sets, the crowd sang.
I live in the midwest lots of honky tonk bars but I don't dress like a cowboy even though I've done lots of cowboy work from working cattle to raking and bailing...so cowboys want to fight me now and then but this song has saved me from fighting my way out of a few bars..I just played it on the jukebox and ended up with everyone sing it with me!!! If I get stoned and sing all night long it's a family tradition!!!!!!
I haven't seen anyone mention this but Hank Williams Jr wore the big glasses and beard etc in that way to cover scars because he fell down a cliff hiking, he survived but has facial scars
"Listen to the lyrics", replied Yeet. I couldn't agree more. For me, no matter how weird the song may sound, I will always ask, "well, let me read the lyrics, and listen to that again "
I played this at my wedding at a upscale hotel in Pittsburgh... immediate redneck party. I am from very rural PA. You will never take the country out of this girl.
Also, Bocephus (hank jr) always wore the glasses, because, he fell down a mountain and scarred up his face. Thats why he had the beard and glasses at all times.
On August 8, 1975, Williams was nearly killed in a mountain-climbing accident in southwestern Montana. While climbing Ajax Peak on the continental divide (Idaho border) west of Jackson, the snow beneath him collapsed and he fell almost 500 feet (150 m) onto rock; he suffered multiple skull and facial fractures.
Mr. V- PLEASE react to his song “Whiskey Bent and Hell Bound.” AND his movie “Living Proof The Hank Williams Jr. Story” on your movie channel- you’ll see ALL of this- he fell from a mountain/cliff and busted his face literally to pieces- hence the beard, etc.. They literally put his face back together like a puzzle and the beard and all hides the scars- Now I could never imagine him without a beard and glasses - Anyway, It’s a miracle he survived- please react to it- 💙👍✌️
PPS- lol- I don’t know if this is everywhere- but at the country bars here in Nashville- this is an audience participation song- when Hank sings- why do ya drink- you SCREAM at the top of your lungs -TO GET DRUNK! Then- why do you roll smoke? TO GET HIGH - why do you live out the song that you wrote-TO GET LAID 😂😂😂😂😂

I went to a Hank Williams, Jr. concert in the mid-80s. I've seen Grateful Dead and Phish but the Williams show was the most weed I've ever seen at a concert. People were literally passing joints down the rows!

This is high tier country music, sung by one of the greats. And the best part of the whole thing is that it's a story. A good song is good music, but a great song is a story set to music. Country seems to be forgetting that lately.

Check out The Pointer Sisters "Fairytale" or Rod Stewart "What made Milwaukee famous has made a loser out of me".

Hank Jr can play so many instruments. There's a live performance of "Born to Boogie" somewhere, where goes through and does a little solo on each of his band members' instruments. He also can play a banjo, and there's an old performance of him picking the hell out of it when he played "Foggy Mountain Breakdown."

You should look at his bio. He survived a 400 ft fall and still came back from the ashes. No doubt a legend.
Hank Sr. was a great songwriter, and wrote the first rock and roll song. "Move it on Over" in 1947. Nothing in rock came before that.
Hank fell off a mountain, lost an eye, teeth, broke his jaw and cheek bone. It's a blessing that he survived
