  • After restoring the paint on 3 of the 4 sides of my cabinet, I decided to share the process by creating a RUclips video. Maybe others will give it a try. Let me know if you tried to make your own stencils for an arcade cabinet.
    In this video, I show how I used my Silhouette Cameo to cut Oramask 813 to make stencils to restore my Ms Pacman full-size upright arcade cabinet. I use the standard free "Silhouette Studio" layout software that comes with the machine. Creating my own stencils saved money, but not time. It took me about a month to complete the paint on the entire cabinet. The only thing I would have done differently, is to sand the edges of the paint after each stencil layer with 800+ grit.
    Prior to starting on the cabinet. I tested the process on a scrap of plywood. I practiced with the 3 ghosts on the bottom of the sides. I was able to get the stencil application and paint gun set up. This cheap gun has a huge needle valve which is good for thicker paints. Credit goes to my daughter who set up my paint gun. She is an auto body tech.
    I spent a lot of time spacing the front art on the cabinet. I put the same space between the yellow/pink line and the top and sides of the coin door. I test fitted the coin door before also. I've noticed many other restorations where this is not centered.
    I went with a semi-gloss paint as it hides imperfections better than gloss. I also went with the same paint for all color layers. I didn't want issues with paint not sticking correctly. I did not have any issues between coats and different colors. I could do a second coat within 10 minutes or 2 days. It didn't seem to matter with this paint. It was also nice to do this in a very dry garage in the winter. Garage temperature was in the mid 60s to low 70s.
    Through my past research, I have found 3 different Ms Pac-man full-size upright artwork designs. It's really hard to do research on the web right now as there are many restored cabinets that use combinations of these three designs. (1) Early Upright: This is the version I am painting in this video. The yellow and pink stripes are not outlined, the ghost is yellow and pink, the blue is lighter and the pink is light. These were painted on plywood cabinets. The original paint was silk screened on the cabinet. (2) Later Upright: This version was actually a decal/sticker put onto particle board cabinets. The pink and yellow stripes are outlined in black, the ghost is all pink with some white, the pink is more red and the blue is dark. (3) Class of 1981: This version you can still purchase today. It is combined with the Galaga game. It's similar looking to the earliest version (paint colors and having a pink and yellow ghost). But this version has the pink and yellow stripes outlined in black. I don't know if they are decals or paint.
    Paint: Sherwin Williams, Duration Home, Interior Acrylic Latex, Semi -Gloss, Ultradeep Base. I used one quart of the pink and black. I used about a quart and half of the blue and yellow.
    The following is paint colors for the early plywood Ms Pac-man cabinets.
    Ms Pac-Man Blue: I had it color matched to a sample I brought in that matched the blue on both my Arcade Cabinet and my Mr Mrs Pac-Man Pinball machine. Match is nearly right on.
    CCE*Colorant (OZ) (32) (64) (128)
    W1-White (-) (12) ( -) (1)
    L1-Blue ( -) (62) ( -) (1)
    N1-Raw Umber ( -) (2) (1) (1)
    Y1-Yellow ( -) (2) (1) ( -)
    Ms Pac-Man Yellow was a standard color whose paint chip very closely matched the Arcade Cabinet. "Confident Yellow 6911"
    CCE*Colorant (OZ) (32) (64) (128)
    W1-White (-) (19) (-) (-)
    N1-Raw Umber (-) (-) (1) (-)
    Y1-Yellow (2) (12) (-) (1)
    Ms Pac-Man Pink was sampled off my reproduction control panel overlay. The pink was faded on my Arcade cabinet, but I did find a spot on my Mr Mrs Pac-Man Pinball which was not faded and did match the reproduction control panel overlay. Match is pretty close. The original paint seemed to be reflective (almost glowing in dim light).
    CCE*Colorant (OZ) (32) (64) (128)
    W1-White (-) (24) (1) (-)
    R3-Magenta (-) (59) (-) (-)
    R4-New Red (-) (12) (-) (-)
    Ms Pac-Man Black was just asking them for a black paint. Black is black. It matched very well with the original black on the cabinet. It’s always weird ordering black paint.
    CCE*Colorant (OZ) (32) (64) (128)
    B1-Black (2) (15) (1) (1)

    This is so awesome! I actually had this Idea a few months ago, when I bought my Ms Pac Man where someone painted it black, and someone else ruined the art on one side trying to remove it. My fiance was talking about buying a cricut...thinking this restore was a possibility we purchased one...but I never sat down and learned how to work with the cricut. I was using this same set of art but didn't know the welding and such with the software. Now I'm gonna have to it down with your video and get back into restore mode!

      I have an old Circut. My version wouldn't let you bring in your own images or cut bigger than the mat. So I used the Silhouette Cameo. But it looks like you can do a lot more with the new Circut and it's software.

    Whoa! Nice work. I appreciate the time that went into cutting your own stencil. I've sprayed arcade cabinets before now my next step is to attempt to spray with a stencil. I enjoyed seeing how you sprayed each color. The game looks great!

    Glad I found this video. I've got a Ms. Pac that will eventually need to be repainted. I'll be buying the stencils online though. Thanks for sharing the paint brand and codes. Looks great.

      It was a lot of fun to do. The Ms Pac Man stencils are expensive because you get three sets (three paint colors over the base). Other machines only use two. It will be worth it though. I had issue with my paint gun - luckily my daughter is a car painter so she showed me how to set up the gun. She re-did the bondo work on my coin door - I really messed that up. I need to find the video of her re-doing it. I have it somewhere.

      I don’t mike them for others. Mine would be very difficult to use compared to one piece versions you can get on line.

    I need a Stencil made for a Super Pac Man front kick plate only. Could you make or do you know where to have this printed? It's 3 colors - Yellow, Red and Black. I have the Illustrator file already sized.

      A sign shop should be able to cut paint mask easily. Plus they can do it on wide vinyl.

    Thanks for showing this process! It seems the key is having the color separated PDFs to work from to begin with :(

    • @geeteoh1
      @geeteoh1  7 месяцев назад

      You can start by “tracing” all colors from one PDF. But then you would have to manually erase each of the unneeded color outlines. And do this 3 times. One for each stencil.

    • @onjisan
      @onjisan 7 месяцев назад

      @@geeteoh1 you know, thats a good point! So if you had to do this all over again, would you have opted to buy stencils instead of doing all the work? I know in my case I actually enjoy the work so I dont feel like my time is 'wasted' or anything.

      I mis-spoke on the video. The free vinyl cutter software does not take standard PDF files. I converted them to jpg files. The pay version of the software is supposed to take PDF files.

      It never picked up any scratches or chips. I drove it 200 miles in the back of my pickup and it’s in my uncles basement rec room. It’s still flawless, but he’s real particular about keeping things perfect.

    I see you have a Mr & Mrs Pac-man pinball machine - do you have the stencil for painting that cabinet? I am trying to make one myself and use a friend's Cricut Air. It is also 12", but I think you can now import your own images. Just have to learn how.

    • @geeteoh1
      @geeteoh1  5 лет назад

      Sorry. I do not have a stencil for the pinball. I believe the newer cricut can cut custom traced stencils.

      I do not have any pac man stencils or artwork. They look to have fine lines. The originals were probably silk screened like the ms pac man.

    Great job dude! What kind/size of air compressor did you use if I may ask?

    • @geeteoh1
      @geeteoh1  7 лет назад

      Thanks. I did the other sides off camera. It turned out better than I expected. After that, I wanted to share the last side. My compressor is a big one. DeVilbiss Air America 6.5hp 60 gallon upright 240vac with 11 or 12 CFM output. It rarely ran during spraying. The tank was set at 110PSI and my external (in-line) dryer/regulator was set at about 35PSI. I bought it for sanding which needs the high CFM. My next video will show some filling/sanding and refinishing of the coin door by a professional in body repair.

      @geeteoh1  6 лет назад +1

      The New York Hustle, I do not sell the stencils. Sorry. They are available online. And in one piece, instead of 12-inch strips. Much easier to apply.

    • @geeteoh1
      @geeteoh1  5 лет назад

      The stencils I made are a bit harder to apply (and keep stuck down) then ones you purchase. If I had a wider vinyl cutter, I could sell them. Ms Pac Man stencils are expensive because there is three stencil colors over the base. Most other machines only have two.
