You make the best one-handed backhand videos I've seen on youtube. The stuff about the racquet face and the wrist is pretty much *THE KEY* to developing a working 1HBH and no one ever talks about it. It took me a lot of time to figure it out, I only wish this video existed ten years ago lol.
I have been watching your one-handed backhand series for a while until it clicked recently, making a huge positive impact on my backhand. Great stuff Kevin, keep it up.
Fantastic teacher! Not all players can teach. As you demonstrate, pedagogy, biomechanics and kinesiology are essential ingredients to being a excellent tennis instructor. So glad I found you here on RUclips! Thank-you.
Best explanation I’ve seen. At the 4”30 mark, best audio visual simplification of what to focus on and the consequences of wrist position on trajectory. Thank you!
This is almost the best of all explanations about the mechanics of the one hand backhand! That's a marvel! And the first one when the grip properly and clearly unveiled instead of that indefinite murmur
KILLER GREAT CHANNEL! Thanks for breaking down what could be overcomplicated instructions for a stroke into essentials... practice and getting the feel takes care of itself. So much more helpful than so many other complex tutorials! Thank you!
Thank you man and this video for existing! There are many players with a weak one handed back hand and a dream to be like Federer, just looking for exercises to be better. Keep it up!
Hey Kev I'm watching this video because I enjoy your delivery of what is a very complicated stroke. Love your energy and explanation of biomechanics and how this will affect stroke production. A fellow tennis coach.
Hey I really wanted to say thank you to this video! I was feeling super lost with my one hander these days, and this drill helped me reset it and get back to the basics. Again, thank you so much!!!
Kevin fantastic stuff as usual. Your ability to cover the whole gamut of the essentials in a concise but understandable way is great. Always essential to remember and REPEAT the fundamentals. Thank you!
Key I’ve learned is prepare early, get the racquet back, start uncorking earlier than you think. Because if you’re late, you will naturally flatten out your swing in order to meet the ball because you’re late, and that causes the ball to sail out, versus having time to loop your swing up and getting that too soon.
Excellent, we all should begin with this. One thing you should have mention is the straight arm, from preparation to hit. Without that you play mainly with forearm. I'm still struggling with this bad habit, coming from keeping the head of the frame up when doing the unit turn.
Yes,all of the above and foot work plus all the repetitive drills every day, creating your repertoire of signature shots, being 56 I'll love this game till i die and i have always loved the obh,was my strength, even though my forehand was as good as my odh.
Pretty good stuff here on the one hander. What happens with the racket face and the swing path is critical to the success of your shot. The grip determines the position of the racket face. I like to think small letter l big letter L with the wrist and arm at contact. Notice the arm is practically straight with the pros giving them more leverage over the ball. This guy knows what he's talking about here.
Haven't watched yet buddy. But good on ya for keeping the Backhand Dream Alive. And trust me.. People don't go to bed at night dreaming a bout hitting a backhand like Rafa... Wawrinka, Federer, Dimitrov... Me... They dream about playing like that, like us
Love it. Simple and to the point. The rest is practice and personalization. Can't stand those over-the-top analysis of Federer's shoulder drop, blah blah blah 😆
A response to the live chat comment. One handed backhands are a weakness if yours has bad technique or is inconsistent. To be honest I only teach one handers to really tall kids that will have a long reach(certain players only) or short players with short arm length. If you have sound mechanics and strength in your arms you can have success because you have more reach with a one handed. I teach two handed to juniors to 90% of my juniors.
I agree that it's easier to hit a one handed backhand in the beginning because of the the left hand can provide a lot of forgiveness. This is why I wanted to create a video talking about what I think are simple fundamentals that could help someone wanting to learn the one hander. Thanks
The luxury of having long takeback/runway to build momentum makes me changing into 2HBH. Nevertheless, this is right on point for beginner-intermediate players. I think if people want to succeed with their 1HBH, they need to learn a defensive high-arc topspin ball on the run. I never see this topic in the whole youtube section of 1HBH, because mainly the content is about generating power, or to hit "easy" ball. Hope you can cover this in your next content so people can cover their 1HBH especially in the rally situation. Though i don't hit the 1HBH anymore, wish many people would still hit with it 🙂
I wish I could 2HBH, but 1HBH feels more natural for me. The mid court back hand using 2HBH looks more agressive on short swing, short take back, when time is less, where I usually end up slicing with my 1HBH. WTA's Danille Collins 2HBH from inside the court in the doubles lane going cross court wide out, I just can't see how to hit that with a 1HBH and have a high percentage of success.
Kevin, I've been a big fan of yours for a while. Great tips! I am not a fan of the "butt pull" concept. I think it leads to a flat bh. I like taking the racket back and tilting my front shoulder down while my racket arm bends upward. That better-sets me up for a C-type swing (high to low to high) that imparts good top spin. Tx!
The Flat Backhand is useful because it always keeps the ball low and deep in the court. I do pull the butt all through the ball and then flip the racquet all over and it goes around 80-100 mph through the court low over the net. 1-3 feet or just inches. As for the slice, if I don't want to do a normal slice then I will go over the shoulder to put more drive and spin on the ball. That causes the ball to go all sideways soon as it bounces or skid low through the court so you can drive slice like your groundstrokes at 80-100 mph if you add some dipping spin onto the ball. I am not restricted to just using the normal backhand skim or floating slice.
I have a different forehand grip than my backhand what grip should I use for a return of serve when I don't have time to rotate and still hit an aggressive return.
@@Zirkah ruclips.net/video/soVK1Jo1xrA/видео.htmlm25s Strong stance, back foot slides forward, rotate hips and shoulders, strong extended arms, and attack the target.
The old school Budge bent elbow forearm stroke with the thumb up the back of a continental grip is STILL the easiest for rec players to play AND easily returns high balls with a high backhand volley motion. AND, YES, it lacks power. But rec players should concentrate on getting the ball back. Save the ATP/Landsdorp backhand for aspiring college players. BTW, the Federer/Gasquet backhand grips also lend themselves to either the Modern ATP backhand or the classic Budge. The Landsdorp does not.
The best OHBH coaching video on RUclips

Best backhand tutorial I've ever seen. Most tutorials show everything at once and it becomes overwhelming. Subbed

Just nailed the explanation. Thank you so much!
I can't wait to try it on the court. It looks great. That could really fix my problems with the one handed Backhand.

great vide.. what grip do you use for this 1 handed BH in this video? can u explain to me?
Continental grip works fine for backhand slice.
Which grip to use teacher, thank you
Kevin rules!!!!
I was never even taught a two hand backhand when i was a kid. Ive always been a 1h bh hitter.
Yeah you simplified the hell out of that.😵💫😜 Haha. But great review nonetheless. Definitely learned something. Thanks!
I wish this guy was my coach
I have a different forehand grip than my backhand what grip should I use for a return of serve when I don't have time to rotate and still hit an aggressive return.
Im confused about the grip. Do you use hammer or pistol grip?
So which grip is the best for OHB?
I use the 'backhand slap' technique. It's super effective. Then the rest is just variations.
Can you post a reference video of the Backhand Slap

During the preparation the raquet is not vertical ..?
