Years later and this still is relevant. Thank you so much for this, I have been struggling for ages to draw realistic looking ink illustration. I thought that Photoshop was the problem... turns out it was a combination of my ignorance and Wacom settings. Big thumbs up!
this video is a holy grail for new designers learning photoshop. i have been using photoshop for 4 years now.. and nobody told me u could do so much awesome things with it.
I just discovered RUclips and videos such as this! I really enjoy your videos. I have been doing cartoons and illustrations for about 50 years and have made a ton of mistakes, as nobody seemed to be able to tell me or teach me what I really wanted and needed to know back then, as none of the stuff that I wanted to do was available then! It was way before any computer graphics of any kind were available and CGI wasn't even a word. I guess I was born too early! Computers that could only do a fraction of what computers today that you can carry with you can do couldn't fit into several large buildings and still couldn't compare with what can now be done! I always knew what I wanted to do but couldn't see the way to get there! I winged it and got by while I now find that the World has evolved far faster than I was aware and I have been left behind! Rather than feel sad or regret anything I may have missed , I prefer to try and pick up on what I have missed and carry on as best as I can! I feel my cartoons and my art are still pertinent but know I have a lot of catching up to do! I need to be able to work in layers and need to have templates that I can download and use! This World and the World of computer graphics has and continues to grow at a pace that surpasses my ability to comprehend and absorb. Luckily, it also allows be to stop and repeat, as many times as is necessary to be absorbed through my thick skull! Thanks for giving us old folks a tool that is appropriate! I would appreciate some more about templates! I have the full Adobe Creative Suite at my disposal as well as Sketchbook Pro but haven't developed my skills enough to keep pace and I'm not getting any younger! I need to get my ideas created and presented before I find my expiration date has arrived and find that I was too late!
i have a question i cant seem to find that setting you pulled up were there is more editing for your brush, were do you find it i never saw that icon on the side on my photoshop program
Went looking for some setting suggestions on brushes for inking and instead found way more in depth information. I hadn't thought to check my Tablet Tools settings and kept fighting the brushes, realized a simple Tool adjustment could have saved me some struggles! Thank you so much! :)
I know this video is old but you've helped me tremendously. You are a wonderful artist and person and I value your tutorials and commentaries highly. Even with my old Intuos 4 I'm still able to achieve some kick-ass results because of your videos. Thank you.
Thank you so much buddy! I was setting the pen pressure as you suggested, but I had no idea how to create a brush and adjusting it. This is just WOOOWW! I must say that the default opaque dot it pretty awesome too when we set it to 'Pen pressure'. Thanks again. I love your videos!
great video super useuful exactly what i wanted to know, i actually didn't even have the sound on and only watched about a minute in before getting exactly what i had been searching for. that being said, he did say "an absorbent amount of time" when i'm pretty sure he meant "exorbitant"
Another tip I found that you may like is to rotate the canvas by holding down the R button whilst in brush tool mode. Hold the R Button down and you can rotate the canvas any way you like
This is a really old video, but I'm glad I stumbled into this. This is the one I've been looking for. I'm going to create my own brush later and see how it changes the feel of my work. Thank you so much! :D
this is by far the best tutorial on how to create a brush omg... do you think I can use this to make brushes for modern calligraphy lettering..and get that effect from brush pen calligraphy?
Thank you very much for this video. I don't have a cintiq, but an old wacom tablet, too small, in my opinion. It's really hard drawing in this condition... -_- You're very helpful!
when you put pen pressure your brush changes according to the pressure and smoother edges, at 3:26 but mine still looks the same! i did exactly what u said and it doesn't work, any reasons what can i do? am i doing something wrong? help!
Could you please clarify why still use traced lines for shading (old style comics) instead of "real shading" with blurring and color intense variance? Why still use the traced lines? Thanks for the good video!
Dude, Rob- THANK YOU! I made that meteor looking brush and it makes the art look so much like a real ink pen. I've just been using the default circle. no more!
Do you have to have pen tool hook up when creating the brush. I noticed mind didn't change shape when i clicked control pen pressure. It stayed the same.
WOWOWOWOW! I found you! It's really great! I couldn't find such a brushes in the Internet as an archive with presets. Thank you for this video. What a lucky day! P.S. I also found videos about the human anatomy on your channel. So, I hope, you will be pleased if I subscribe! Make more videos, I'll make everything to help you to develop the channel more. Thanks!
Robert, I'm new to your channel. The way you are using your new brush, I assume that you are not working with a clunky mouse. What is the hardware you are using to actually draw the lines?
Hey! Thanks for the amazing video! I have a problem with my brushes though...whenever I try to use a brush with my pen it has this annoying fade effect where it starts at low opacity and I have to paint over it like 3 times to get the full color. Help??
Only issue with this I'm having is my brush is still turning out grainy looking instead of smooth like yours. Turning down the spacing to 1% helped slightly, but it still doesn't look as smooth as yours. I even smoothed out the edges by making a new brush, but I can't get it to look quite a sharp as yours and smooth. Even tried enhancing the gaussian blur. Unsure what else to try. :/
Great video!!! I am not an expert in the least, and in fact, I am a full-fledged newbie that is still figuring out all of this, so forgive me if this a dumb question: what are you using to "draw" all the stuff in this tutorial? A mouse? Or are you using some sort of "pen" a la Wacom tablet or Cintiq? Thanks!!!
That's awesome tutorial !!. I just found your channel and subscribe due the grear tutorials!!!. 2 questions, besides to practice, how do you do to follow the same line so many times? I'm used to my normal pencils, and now with my tablet is a bit difficult. And, in some tutorials people have active the target symbol on the top, others not. What do you recommend? Thanks a lot and stay safe !! Cheers from Barcelona !!
If I have saved a group of brushes say "dog brushes" as an example. Then I add another dog brush later on. Do I have to resave all the group again? or is it automatically saved on my computer?
I alredy put the dinamic shapes and the brush tip shapes options just like you did, but my brush looks pixelated and I don´t understand why. I even traced your form to avoid mistakes. 😣😓
Hi Robert thanks for this video!!!!!! Just downloaded your awesome brush!!!!!! Is this brush also ok to be used for commercial use as well / or should be credited when using????
SAI and Manga Studio both have mouse smoothing or whatever it's called, so when I go back to photoshop for inking everything looks so jagged in comparision, is there any smoothing setting type thing in photoshop? I'm using CS3 by the way, things might have improved in newer versions but I havnt tried em.
yea, I had to upgrade to CC 2015, it's so much better than cs3 and if you think about it cs3 was released ten years ago so the tablet technology didn't even scratch the surface of what we use today
Could you add your Photoshop version name to your titles? I have 21.2 The brush settings are completely different. As a novice this is intimidating. I would also like to have your version as the pen pressure is an issue in mine. (Five years later lol)
7 years ago, but YT still recommends this in solving my problem. Bravo!
Wow, I never realized how much effect tablet settings could have. Thanks for another great tutorial!
+Bryan Runyan Glad to help! Thanks for watching!

Help??
Thank you so much for the help!
this 1000 dpi resolution is created for the comic? Are there any guidelines for which projects to create brushes with a given dpi resolution?
Only issue with this I'm having is my brush is still turning out grainy looking instead of smooth like yours. Turning down the spacing to 1% helped slightly, but it still doesn't look as smooth as yours. I even smoothed out the edges by making a new brush, but I can't get it to look quite a sharp as yours and smooth. Even tried enhancing the gaussian blur. Unsure what else to try. :/
Great great great ! at least i've got a good comics brush on photoshop ! thank you so much !
Thank you! that was helpfull!

great brush set! thanks alot, but my canvas is slightly blurry, do you know how i can get it sharp like yours?
+mikegreenemusic Bump up your resolution and that should help. I work at at least 300dpi and usually 9" x 16" for my canvas size. Thanks for watching!
Great stuff here!!!
Glad you like it!
Thanks for that video!
I'm thinking of buying your brushes, are compatible with Photoshop CS6?
thanx man ur a life saver!
Glad to help! :)
I alredy put the dinamic shapes and the brush tip shapes options just like you did, but my brush looks pixelated and I don´t understand why. I even traced your form to avoid mistakes. 😣😓
Ah okey, if I work on 300 pp resolution looks ok, I guess 1000 pp was too much for my photoshop 😂. Thanks! I already give you al ike and subscribed 😁
