Media Division I was wondering actually if you would have an idea about adding an anamorphic projector lens in front of a MF lens like the Mamiya Sekor putting the whole thing on a camera with an APS-C sensor whether the image would cover the whole sensor rather then cutting the side off?
If you would want to use the whole lens projection you would need a much stronger focal reducer. O.4x or something like that.. I don’t know of any reducer like that. with the Kipon you loose a bit FOV but most projector lenses need crops anyways
Media Division I’m not necessarily that concerned, at least in theory, with a crop of the bigger image circle. I really am looking for 2x squeeze anamorphic, but I just don't want waste pixels on black pillar bars as a starting point.

@@tjpenton Sorry for causing vast investment fever ;-) I pair them with the Panasonic LA7200 and with AnamorphiX 1.3 from Letus. For me, that worked only with the 35mm and the 45mm (with the booster).... let me know, if you get good results with along lens: the 80mm would be swell.
@@MediaDivision I opted for mostly 2.8 models, that way I can shoot wide open (better shaped anamorphic bokeh wide open) while still maintaining sharpness. Since the Z6 is FF, hoping the 80mm 2.8 will be solid.
@@VladimirPlavac I don't "manage" at all ;-) The Talkies are shot with the MAVO LF that obviously is clean as a babies butt. But GH5 and EVA on are clean enough, too, if you don't push the shadows, and I never do. I think that people are obsessed with noise. I don't care... maybe it stays away because of that ?!😝 If you shot a dark scene... leave it dark. If you want something bright, make it bright in real life. If you can't ... shoot anyway.
It's funny when you see the whole range in comparison you can just see what makes the Mamiya Sekor C 80mm special, its like the other focal lengths were attempts at greatness but that one gets it all right, like a painter whose done a long range of portraits but thats his masterpiece.

Watching that in motion is crazy.
Hey guys! Binge watching all of your videos after seeing the Lens Rehousing documentary. With these lenses, did you guys grab the N versions or the first gen versions of the mamiyas? I heard the N versions are a necessity due to the new coating for the wider angle lenses in particular

You said 2001 Space Odessy and Lawrence of Arabia were shot on large sensors. For the benefit of the kids watching this, please, ... !!! those films were shot medium format FILM !!! (65mm Todd AO, to be precise, then printed on DP 70mm with stereo sound track)
yeah... I noticed that to late.... but I can talk myself out of it... negatives are sensors, just analog ;-) Anyhow... I think one gets the gist. Well spotted. But if we want to be precise here: There is no medium format in film… 65/70mm is defined as "large format" in cinematography (I mention that in the video. Also, according to "Shot on What" 2001 and Lawrence of Arabia are credited as Super Panavision 70 that is not identical to Todd AO. IMDB lists 2001 as Cinerama, Super Panavision and Todd AO.
@@MediaDivision Yes of course, I know what you mean, that film is a form of 'sensor', and most watching your video ( which I found very informative thank you) will understand this, and well, it's water under the bridge now. But it's interesting if IMDB lists 2001 with any amount of Cinerama, because this is the 3-camera/3-projector set up, and I don't think there is a single frame of Cinerama in that film.
Yeah, sound strange to me, too. Of course, 2001 used no 3 camera system… but without doing extensive research I know that some cinerama shot where done with ultra Panavision for practical reasons (I think there is a river rafting scene where they did that)… maybe there is a camera that was branded as cinerama from that, that has been also used for 2001… or, it is simply bogus ;-) Thanks for the flower and your input Kevin!

I think that is a healthy attitude to about everything ;-) I ever only had my Metabones Ultra for MFT... so can't really compare that. But no complaints - works well. The .64 should work well with a Mamiya 645 to F Adapter. There are many... but I tested none as I don't own Nikon lenses. You'll find a link in the description of the video!
This was super interesting - I've recently picked up a 6x7 lens and was looking into the Mamiya set. I wish there was a booster option for EF mount, though.. Does anyone know of any options for Mamiya 645 or Pentax 6x7 lenses to EF mount as a focal reducer/speedbooster? I have the MagicBooster speedbooster mount in my Ursa Mini Pro, hoping to combine it maybe.
Thanks man. There is enough space in the mount with cameras without a mirror, like the c200, 2300, c700, Alexa Mini, EVA1… you name it. The element will just have to extrude a lot into the camera. You could built one yourself (if you have the guts) taking a Kipon apart… I just suggested such a solution to Kipon and they have thought about that before……… we will see.
@@MediaDivision Yeah in my Ursa there's no room to further mount anymore glass (especially with the existing magic booster in it) but I'd love to see one hacked together for EF adapting.
If I must say only a word, that would be: “Wow!” Is that even a word? This video is soooooo well explained, shot and done. Thanks. Thanks. I’ve tracked down a whole set of Mamiya three years ago. They are all same year, same series. Almost all of them from the same photographer in Japan. I love the image they have. I’ve added the focus gear and 80mm filter thread on the whole set. I’m still having second thoughts to have their mounts replace by PL. (expensive at Duclos) Honestly I miss wide angles and I’m happy that you talked about ARRI and RED mounts which are the Cameras I usually shoot them with. Sony Venice too lately. This optics are fantastic. Thanks again for this great video.
Hey Pedro, thanks a lot for the flowers, trying and improving all the time. I wouldn't replace the mount to PL, it just takes away their future compatibility with larger formats...LPL to start with, and I don't expect it to end there. 65mm seems to be a logical extension. Also, it would take away the ability to use focal reducers that will indeed give you somewhat wide FOV with the 35mm giving a 24,5 equivalent.
I recently got the opportunity to work with the Arriflex 765, where we had the Mamiya 645 as a directors' viewfinder. Really wild to work with 65mm film, especially in a student production, but the look and feel to work with this format was just unbelievable. Another great post. Can't understand why so few views???. I am shooting with this Kipon speed booster Mamiya 645 on the panasonic S1, its incredible and an incredible combination. The 35mm in particular is doing something very special i feel, hard to quantify but i find it pairs well with anamorphic. Kipon very kindly gave me an adapter. I think a lot of people are making the mistake and commenting all over the web about simple dumb adaptors, this is an optical component and completely different.
Well, it is a very special subject in a small niche. Very few will be attracted to these lenses and we expected it to be low on views. More lenses at better prices for us ;-) Kipon did a nice job helping to resurrect a lot of old medium format lenses.
@@MediaDivision I think this subject is a slow burn , there really is something special going on with this kipon speed boosted mamiya lenses. this is something i did with the Panasonic S1 /high speed HD mode/ Kipon M645-SL medium format speed booster , Mamiya sekkor 120mm F4.5. vimeo.com/361507720 (please delete if inappropriate.)

"...in the 70s zooms were still shyte." - I'm an old glass aficionado and truer words have never been spoken. Have you every played around with any of the old ultra-speed f/1 or f/1.2 glass from Canon or Nikon on cinema cameras? The Nikon 55mm f/1.2 (the original single coated model) is one of my mainstays for stills photography. It's noticeably soft wide open, but by f/2 it's ridiculously sharp. It just has this...feel to it, very similar to what I saw out of The Dark Knight in this video. Great work as always! (Coincidentally, I'm planning on getting into medium format photography at some point, and the Mamiya 645 series is my first choice at the moment. I think you just helped solidify that.)
Thanks Benjamin… like we discussed before, I am into Contax Zeiss and working on an episode about those… quality wise the should easily match Nikkors or Canon. That set even has a very usable zoom (being developed a bit later).
Media Division Nick, seriously appreciate the work you are putting into these videos! Im not sure lots of people realize the time it takes to put quality content and to the extend of time they take to make! Great work mate!
Great video, also thanks for making a visual representation & comparison between sensor sizes, now i don't need to look it up online ( you saved me time ) :D
When I was at the s1r and s1 hype event in New York, the Lumix company men had that very medium format lenses hooked up to the s1. So, I think you are on to something. ;)
Thats interesting, thank you! With a Kipon booster a combo would cost about 700$ with the 80mm f1.9…… giving you a 56mm f1.3.... that is faster and cheaper than their 2.500$ 50mm f1.4 Just saying…
Amazing production value from this channel! Everything shot on its own looks like art. I only wish I could see more footage from that 80mm on the GH5, so I'd know what I can expect from it, now that I'm stoked at getting one.
Thanks man... that is really nice to hear. don't get to hung up on camera or lens... it makes surprisingly little difference in the final product. I honesty believe, that if I shot everything on a GH5, it would have been just as nice (almost). If you are looking for something narrow (the 80mm is quite narrow on a GH5) the 80mm is a nice option.
@@MediaDivision Thanks! Good to know. I mentioned it because I'm a firm believer that every lens has it's own look, and I must admit I'm partial to vintage lenses. I have a 50mm f1.4 FD and I love it, although it tends to be somewhat soft wide open. The 80mm you showed seems to have beautiful rendition of color and texture, and in my eyes looks plenty sharp without becoming clinical. Aesthetically, I tend to prefer more compressed look, hence the focal length; or a wide angle with shallow depth of field, which is why I'm also considering a Sigma 18-35mm with a speedbooster for the other end of the spectrum. My 25mm Hyperprime is extremely fast and versatile, but sometimes it feels a little too flat for my taste.
I do agree that lenses have their own look, and soul.... but one has to be aware that one is probably the only one who cares or recognises the difference ;-) The Sigma 18-35 is really the über lens of the decade. The most used and most versatile lens with the best overall specs and characteristics in my arsenal.... it's perfection is it's only flaw.

Thanks a lot Forrest… glad you found something to love. I believe, that it is so important to add something that has a soul to ones work. Thanks for hanging!
On the f6 are the lenses full frame with no crop of any sort? A 45 is a 45mm not a 60 or 70mm?

Still can't wait for the Medium Format with Letus Pro anamorphic adapter you teased on Anamorphic Shooters.
Great breakdown on Medium format.
See this as preparation ;-) have two episodes scheduled before the ultra panavision one
Bought a mamiya 645 the other day... it came with the 80 1.9!!! I’m soo excited to collect them all now that I watch this!!
Luck you... you started with the best
Would be interested in seeing one of your videos on the Pentax super Takumars for cine. I see a lot of young filmmakers putting them on Blackmagic cameras here in LA.
Keep up the good work man, this channel truly stands out from the crowd, made by so called "filmmakers" who are only annoying videographers.
Thank you so much Malics... I consider myself a videographer just as well as a filmmaker... just terms..... as long as one tries not to be annoying 😜
@@MediaDivision yeah well, the word "filmmaker" loses it's meaning month by month, because being overused by vloggers who cannot make even their own shit right. :D It makes me mad.

@@MediaDivision Bought 5 of these damn lenses after watching your video ;) Will be pairing with anamorphic scopes, let's see how that goes. That focal reducer is a little pricey, wish I could find others for Nikon Z mount. Dumb adapter for now. Cheers.
Your footages look insanely good and your videos are so informative. We need an episode on your lighting and how you deal with exposure.
Thank you Vladimir!!! I just go with the flow, and I stoped worrying about underexposing. I used to ETTR and I am way better off not doing that.
@@MediaDivision Thank you for the info ! How do you manage to get such a clean footage in the shadows this way?
@@VladimirPlavac I don't "manage" at all ;-)
The Talkies are shot with the MAVO LF that obviously is clean as a babies butt.
Watching this as my dad just gave me a Mamiya 645. This channel is insane. ❤️
Thanks Nick… have fun with that one. WARNING: Vintage lenses are addictive
It's funny when you see the whole range in comparison you can just see what makes the Mamiya Sekor C 80mm special, its like the other focal lengths were attempts at greatness but that one gets it all right, like a painter whose done a long range of portraits but thats his masterpiece.
Yeah... the 80 is my favourite, too....but You really would have a hard time telling them apart. The 35 looks just like the 80 on s35... not that fast of course.
Ahh this was my secret weapon for about 20 years, got the entire range of lenses with camera for about 400EUR 🥰 Used it on Canon’s, it could make even the cheapest APS-C sing 😍

Such a well produced video and a pleasure to watch. How did you discover the Mamiya glass was used on Interstellar and Dark Knight?
Thanks a lot TC… I don't quite remember where I heard it first… it is a long time ago. But when you know it, it is fairly easy to find… not much details though. theasc.com/ac_magazine/December2014/Interstellar/page1.html

Thanks a lot… very glad you enjoy! They surely shine on medium format cameras. Enjoy your journey and good luck!
Of course, 2001 used no 3 camera system… but without doing extensive research I know that some cinerama shot where done with ultra Panavision for practical reasons (I think there is a river rafting scene where they did that)… maybe there is a camera that was branded as cinerama from that, that has been also used for 2001… or, it is simply bogus ;-)
Thanks for the flower and your input Kevin!

@@MediaDivision Or is there a 645 to Nikon mount? I am currently using the metabones .64 to adapt my Nikon lenses. Would that combo work?
I think that is a healthy attitude to about everything ;-)
I ever only had my Metabones Ultra for MFT... so can't really compare that. But no complaints - works well. The .64 should work well with a Mamiya 645 to F Adapter.
There are many... but I tested none as I don't own Nikon lenses. You'll find a link in the description of the video!
@@MediaDivision I guess I missed that you listed that. I found the one to use!

(expensive at Duclos)
Honestly I miss wide angles and I’m happy that you talked about ARRI and RED mounts which are the Cameras I usually shoot them with.

When I was at the s1r and s1 hype event in New York, the Lumix company men had that very medium format lenses hooked up to the s1. So, I think you are on to something. ;)
Thats interesting, thank you! With a Kipon booster a combo would cost about 700$ with the 80mm f1.9…… giving you a 56mm f1.3.... that is faster and cheaper than their 2.500$ 50mm f1.4
Just saying…
