As a visual learner this has been a life saver for me! I'm not making mime paid, but in a checkerboard pattern instead; two birthday parties in one day and this one is for a little boy who loves racing. The other little boy is getting a creeper minecraft hat. When you are broke and have the skills, a little extra time and lots of yarn, the gift options are unlimited!!!
Wow, you have expanded my skills with this video. This would make a cool poncho w/ 2 panels by not connecting the band or a cool throw for winter with the ribbed band.
Thank you for this video. My son is a real big fan of the HPotter series & I used this video tutorial to make him a slouchy to match his Gryffindor garb he typically wears; using a red, maroon, and gold pattern. He loves it and it definitely increased my crochet confidence. Thank again.
Hey Bethany: I made two of these hats and now I'm going to the wreath. I did not have correct colors to make the red, so I substituted the two reds for two greens. It looks amazing. I gave them out at Christmas to the hunters in the family. When I did not have enough black, I made a white with two reds. It looked amazing. I want to tell everyone that tries this to be patient and don't get discouraged when the yarn becomes tangled. I finally got the problem straightened out.Thank you for this idea. I am making one this morning with three greens because I don't have enough black.
I've always loved the way plaid crochet looks but thought it would be way too difficult. I hate tying off and switching colors but this looks super easy and nice and neat. Thank you so much for making this video!!
Just finished my hat I love plaid and when I seen this I knew I had to do it ...thank you for sharing and thank you for the great ease of your instructons......
I am self taught And I Love this Plaid...Hat...Great Tutorial.... Can use so many different ideas for the plaid Thank You... Great Job. .Love Red Myself... 😊
Thank you so much for this tutorial. I never thought I could make anything like this. You explain everything so well. I want to plaid everything now lol
There is kind of people that you want just to kiss them or hug them, because they are Soooo good and Gentle and YOU one of them.... thank you so much to learning me something new.
SALUDOS.
Thank you!! The video was very helpful. Also, I always appreciate the number of stitches at the end of the row on the written instructions! On my way to make this hat now. Thank you!!!!
Definitely can't wait to make one of these! Would be cute to add a bobble beard to it for a kiddo's hat. My nephew would love it. thanks so much for this video!!
Thank you, Bethany! I just finished one for my husband in navy, blue and gray. It didn't turn out as a slouchy, though. I guess his head is bigger than average, oops! Great tutorial; I love your voice btw, so soothing! :)
Finally teaching myself to crochet, and I always like to start with a bit of a challenge! (for example: taught myself to sew by making jeans) This is a super cute hat, and I can't wait to try it. Subscribed!
bethany dearden I have been practicing with a huge bundle of yarn I got for free a year ago, I think it is made of acrylic or something. It also happens to be bright, obnoxious green! I've finished the band, and it's not very stretchy. Is this because of the material? I will be getting some nicer, more comfy yarn for a hat I will actually wear.
I like the video and going to try. Made the band already but it would have been nice a couple more rows done especially for beginners. I'm sure you already know but light colors are better in tutorials.
Thank you for teaching me how to do this hat I've been looking n now you just made it happen for me, hopefully I learn more with you ( TEACHER) THX.👍👍👍
I'm so glad you did the video tutorial. I saw this pattern a few weeks back and loved it. After reading the pattern I felt I was in over my head with the color work. After watching the video I'm going to give it a try. Thanks
So I used an I hook 41 rows on the band and got 20 inches so I stopped just an FYI TO SNYONE READING THIS you can make any size hat fit band then just use multiples of 3's for baby's infants etc I would use standard size hat stitches 45 48 51 54 57 60 63 66 etc. as long as your using multiples of 3's you should be good then just measure your hat length then go a little longer for a slouchy look HAPPY HOOKING
Maria Pagano how long would I make the band in inches to fit an infant head? It's my first time making a baby hat though I've made adult hats before so I'm not sure of the sizing.
I'm about half way through this. When I got my band done, I was only able to get 66 single crochet around, so I just went with it. Didn't realize just how un-stretchy it would be, so this may be a skull cap rather than a slouchy. Work in progress, but a great looking hat regardless.
I love the color black when it's finished I hate working with black. And I wish you would've picked a different color than black videotaping it's hard to see the stitches and what you're really doing but I love your videos.
Thank you so much! This is not intimidating at all. I’m going to do a lavender, grey and black mix. I appreciated learning the technique of doing the SC increases on the ribbing to end up with the required number of stitches (72). Keeping the band tight is important to me (15” or less).
i Love the pattern to this Bethany>>> Hoping you had a Wonderful Christ-mas with family havent been able to see much of your work till now. havent been on my email readings been busy with working 2 jobs or being with Mom doing things along the way I pray all is well. continue your great job of sharing your crochet projects. I'm saving this pattern soon would be nice to try this. Take care!! Sincerely Rhonda Fannin
I want to readjust the sizing. Would love to make it for my 5yr and 1 yr old boys. How would i do it ? By adjusting the band width? And should i keep the band width in even number of stitches?
I just finished one in black and blue but mine also feels kind of loose..I just started a new one and pulled the yarn as I go but it still seems not as tight as yours..I'm wondering how to make it more "fitted" without it affecting the band size....
I’m trying to make this hat. (Video is great by the way) When I’m doing my plaid part, it’s turning out off just a little. My Black squares are not going in a straight line they are kind of slanting a little. What I’m I doing wrong?
i made 72 SC and did my 1st row but when i ended that row i ended with a black not red so i had two black together....what did i do wrong Bethany ? Can you please help me. Thank you.
I made a pink gray and white one but I’m thinking it was either too tight or poor color choice because you can see the white carrying through the pink. Is it suggested to use similar colors when carrying to avoid this?
finally a video for experienced crocheters. I love how you jumped right into it without a whole lot of talking in the beginning. love the video!

Thank you!! The video was very helpful. Also, I always appreciate the number of stitches at the end of the row on the written instructions! On my way to make this hat now. Thank you!!!!
You are so good at explaining the color changes! Thanks!!
Definitely can't wait to make one of these! Would be cute to add a bobble beard to it for a kiddo's hat. My nephew would love it. thanks so much for this video!!
So glad you made this video! I have been intimidated by this type of project and never tried! So excited to get started!
Thank you, Bethany! I just finished one for my husband in navy, blue and gray. It didn't turn out as a slouchy, though. I guess his head is bigger than average, oops! Great tutorial; I love your voice btw, so soothing! :)
Oh that's how you do a plad beanie, that's pretty cool, and easy from the looks of it. So awesome :)
Finally I have found a plaid hat tutorial that I like! I will be making this. :)
Finally teaching myself to crochet, and I always like to start with a bit of a challenge! (for example: taught myself to sew by making jeans)

Saw this on Pinterest and glad you made a video tutorial! I just need red yarn and I can make it, can't wait!!
bethany dearden I started it last night, but it's starting to fan out.. is that normal?
I am and it's coming out even. It might have to do with my tension/ how I'm holding it then!
Ya I started doing that and it's gotten much better, thanks!
You are amazing! I don't know if I will be able to do this but I'll try! You have done an awesome job at simplifying it! Thanks!
Wow you make this look so easy. May actually try this. Thanks so much for doing the video.
I like the video and going to try. Made the band already but it would have been nice a couple more rows done especially for beginners. I'm sure you already know but light colors are better in tutorials.
Lol the struggle is real with black yarn. This is wonderful :)
Haha! Thank you :)
Thank you for teaching me how to do this hat I've been looking n now you just made it happen for me, hopefully I learn more with you ( TEACHER) THX.👍👍👍
Awesome video & totally fun and easy hat!!! Made mine the other day! Love buffalo plaid ❤️
So excited to try this, but it's not a take & crochet project. I'd end up with knots in everything.
Omg! Got to get me some yarn to try this ASAP, you make look really easy, thanks for sharing!!! 😍
Just finished. Such a beautiful hat! Thank you for the tutorial!

Maria Pagano how many single crochet did you end up with?
Maria Pagano how long would I make the band in inches to fit an infant head? It's my first time making a baby hat though I've made adult hats before so I'm not sure of the sizing.
You actually need multiples of 6 not 3 or you will end up with 2 sections being the same color at the end of the round.
I'm about half way through this. When I got my band done, I was only able to get 66 single crochet around, so I just went with it. Didn't realize just how un-stretchy it would be, so this may be a skull cap rather than a slouchy. Work in progress, but a great looking hat regardless.

yes, I become blind with black yarn but I like the color ;)
Well, she wouldn't have been able to make a plaid stitch without a dark color...so....
Paula Morgan I agree, I think the black is okey , but the light needs to be above not on the side .
Thank you so much! This is not intimidating at all. I’m going to do a lavender, grey and black mix. I appreciated learning the technique of doing the SC increases on the ribbing to end up with the required number of stitches (72). Keeping the band tight is important to me (15” or less).
Size hook
Thanks for making this tutorial! Loving it! I am definitely going to try and make one!

Cissy Hernandez hi I just wrote a comment on the sizing info I think it may help you
Which siza
Thanks for the vid! It's a very beautiful hat!!! 👍😊
its very very nice crochet i love it and keep going😊
Does the first 7 chains count as a one row??? The first 46 rows are very stretchy, so isn't it going to be too loose when you wear it on?
fantastic!
***** what is blo.
Arlene Carpenter back loops only
Thanks
With the brim..you get the same look if you just crochet through backloops for all the rows
Anniscraft means that you get the same look if you SC through the back loop as you do if you HDC through the back loop.
i did not you have a channel. You have a new subscriber 😉😊
Beautiful hat and wonderful video! Thanks so much, going to give it a try!
what a beautiful item :o
Wow Beautiful
I want to readjust the sizing. Would love to make it for my 5yr and 1 yr old boys. How would i do it ? By adjusting the band width? And should i keep the band width in even number of stitches?
Hi ! I really love this pattern, but can i do with needles ?
If I wanted to black and orange, what color would be best for the mid color?
Happy thanksgiving 2016
I just finished one in black and blue but mine also feels kind of loose..I just started a new one and pulled the yarn as I go but it still seems not as tight as yours..I'm wondering how to make it more "fitted" without it affecting the band size....
hello i 'm french thank you pour yours vidéo
Bello!!! Hai usato 300 Gr ?
I’m trying to make this hat. (Video is great by the way) When I’m doing my plaid part, it’s turning out off just a little. My Black squares are not going in a straight line they are kind of slanting a little. What I’m I doing wrong?
AMAZING!!!
Very nice
black red white will white do to make me hat
Do you have the plaid pattern for the mittens or a video?
Love this, thank you!!
What is the multiple for the brim . 46 rows was way too big
i made 72 SC and did my 1st row but when i ended that row i ended with a black not red so i had two black together....what did i do wrong Bethany ? Can you please help me. Thank you.
I made a pink gray and white one but I’m thinking it was either too tight or poor color choice because you can see the white carrying through the pink. Is it suggested to use similar colors when carrying to avoid this?
can it be modified for a child size
Btw, made mine black, white, and gray
Maira Terry pics? love the color combo
How do I add a pic. I dont c an option
I'm going to try to do that when I make this hat! But rn I'm working on a lace crochet slouchy beanie
Ugh you're so amaze
love it!
THANK YOU!
So, do we not decrease the hat. We just keep going up and then cinch closing the hat?
i love it thank u
The gauge says 14 dc = 4 “. So do you chain first then do 14dc. Want to make sure I have it right. TIA
What would the counts be if I wanted to make it smaller?
