I’m an ER nurse. I was hired having a few arm tattoos. Now I am working on my leg sleeve and just blasted my hand (fingers/hand/wrist) and guess what everyone loves all my tattoos from the higher ups to the patients. Tattoos are normal now!

Unluckily, I've gone through an ER a few too many times in the last few years. I am a vet and I go through the VA for my medical care. I couldn't care less if my doctor/nurse had tattoos. If he/she is a veteran, I almost expect to see a few.

I'm a lawyer, been practicing for 7 years and have had tattoos even before law school. I've worked at some of the largest law firms in the country, and can tell you that tattoos have never been an issue. Although my tattoos are mostly covered up since I wear suits everyday, I've worn short sleeve shirts on occasion into the office and never had issues. I have colleagues that have visible tattoos and it doesn't seem to have hindered them. Ive worked for old institutional stuffy law firms that have been around for over a hundred years and the people I work with never bat an eye. I'm from a western country though, and I understand that some Asian countries like Japan still have a stigma to tattoos.

It's great that people are being less judgmental regarding tattoos, but I would still caution people. If you are in a highly competitive field, and you are new to the industry, visible tattoos can possibly be a factor that leads to making finding your first few jobs very difficult. *cough cough* IT *cough cough* Unconscious bias does happen even to the best of hiring managers.
No one really cares after you have experience, but new job switchers may want to wait a few years before getting inked in a visible area.

I'm a nurse who got hired while having a full sleeve. The person who hired me said 'we don't judge based on physical appearance, but more based on character'.
Obviously tattoos won't affect your skillset for a specific job, but tattoos are probably more than likely to have more issues with employment than being clean. And also there are parts of your body in which tattoos are very normalized. If I walked in with a face tattoo, I don't even think the interview would've gotten far.

I have never had an issue with my tattoos in many industries such as food, retail, security & in business offices. For the most part, if the tattoos are not offensive in any way (like bad language or something), then I've found that most employers are accepting of it. That and I have plenty of co-workers & managers who also have tattoos. My arms have the most tattoos and for me, it's more of a conversation starter in getting to know who I am and what my tattoos mean to me 🙂

I'm a Montessori Lead teacher and also the music teacher and both my arms are sleeved out. I wear t-shirts almost everyday and my ink is very visible. I've never run into any issues with my tattoos or faced rebuke from my bosses. I work with students aged 2-6, communicate often with parents (who are often tatted themselves LOL) and my appearance never interferes with my professionalism or my work efficiency. My students are now almost all coming in with temporary stamp tattoos and I never hear objections from the parents or my bosses; instead, students often tell me about inquiring with their parents about markings all over my arms and parents explain about tattoos and, quite often, will share if they have one too.
A decade ago the work scene was so different and tattoos were such a stigma in the workplace, but times have changed and they're so much more acceptable and normalized. Digging this new scene and vibe for sure.

Yes, I’m from Florida and my first job when I was 17 was Publix which is a grocery store only in the southern states.
Loved that job worked it five years but They didn’t allow for tattoos or piercings to be visible. Myself and a few other co workers had to either cover tatts or piercings.
That was back in 2007. Publix still has this policy to this day. I think it’s smart business move for them because it’s their brand and are very known and revered as the best grocery store for their customer service and squeaky clean image of the employees.
I haven’t worked there in yeaaaarss as I work from home now but never had a problem about my tattoos or piercings anywhere else. Just when I worked at Publix. Depending on the manger that worked on certain days they’d let me leave in my piercing and the customers generally loved it if they ever noticed it. Got lots of compliments if I ever left it in. This old lady back then LOVED my Monroe piercing (it was just a tiny sparkle Diamond)and then she lost her marbles when she realized its named after the actress. 😂💖

I will say I work primarily as a window cleaner “ I am not currently tattooed” on commercial buildings/ high rises the tattooed guys don’t really get any looks or concern, but when cleaning residential homes I’ve seen many homeowners become visibly uncomfortable letting the guys in and many times follow them very closely almost as if they suspect they will steal something. I will admit this happens more often with senior citizen customers but I suspect this may occasionally effect whether someone has us return to clean their home again. Just things considered.. I plan to get my first tattoo soon but plan to get somewhere can easily covered by shirt or pants. Love your channel and am learning allot thanks.

I worked in sales where the work policy wasn't very supportive for tattooed people. At that time I hadn't had any tattoos. Then I changed my career and started working for the government. Usually it's not a career you'd connect with tattooed people and there are stricter rules for some colleagues. My boss wishes I am not getting my neck, face and hands tattooed, also nothing political/illegal obviously, but apart from that I was fine to do whatever I like.
I have a full sleeve now and plan on the other full sleeve. I am also allowed to show it, but I hide it around 'clients' more often. I also cover it at some of the meetings. Usually I wear short sleeves and show my tattoo around co-workers, but quickly get a blazer or jacket if needed. BUT I had to get checked by a doctor before getting hired for the government and it was one of the questions on the list if you're having tattoos or piercings. It would have been at least a point to talk about and get it checked by the doctor to get hired. But I know about co-workers that were already tattooed and still got hired, but it were all smaller tatoos.
I know being heavily tattooed is limiting in some careers. But personally I do not want to work for someone who is this close minded and thinks having tattoos is being unprofessional or something like that.
I wish in the country where I live, it would be less of a problem to be heavily tattooed, even in conservative jobs.

I absolutely concur with this video. For the exception of Walt Disney World in Orlando Florida (and I wouldn't work there today anyway if they wanted to hire me now) I never had a problem finding employment. Walt Disney was THE ONE AND ONLY who wouldn't hire me because I had exposed tattoos. I had exposed tattoos when I worked as an armed courier for an armored car company, a sheriff's deputy at a sheriff's office, and a public transit bus operator where I work at today. I will admit when I applied for the armored car company in 1993, I didn't have sleeves yet but I did have a tattoo on each forearm (exposed when I wore a short sleeve company uniform) both about the size of a baseball card. However they had no issues when I started making them into sleeves and of course I had them when I was hired as a law enforcement officer (sheriff's deputy) and a public transit bus operator. Obviously all three of these jobs required me to be around the public and my employers didn't have a problem with it. Personally, I like to think of myself as one of those people who were pioneers that started/helped the tattoos into the professional working place seen by the public. BTW, no, none of my tattoos are gang symbols, hate, offensive, or even religious (Japanese Kio sleeve on my right arm and Family's English/England heritage sleeve on my left arm).

Neck, face and hand tats could limit your job choices. Any other locations can be covered and even if there exposed no one cares anymore. As long as you have a good set of skills in your chosen feild the tattoos will probably be not be an issue unless you have some obscene tats that you can't cover.

I thought we were past the tattoos being a deal breaker in the workplace but I was wrong. My son recently graduated from driving school for UPS. He and 22 others were sent to Baltimore for their week long course. Three people were sent home on day one because two of them had very tiny neck tattoos and one had a hand tattoo. I'm a social worker, and throughout my entire career with visible arm and chest tattoos, I've never had any issue; I recently went bolder and decided to get more tattoos on very visible areas; a neck and tattoos on both my hands. There weren't any policies saying that I couldn't, and also it's my body my choice; I'm fortunate to be working in a very liberal field, and my colleagues and supervisors were encouraging of me when I told them I wanted to get tattoos on very visible areas of my body.
I personally won't get any tattoos on my face, but my neck was the furthest I'd go. I've been told by some people that I might not get hired by certain agencies because of my visible tattoos, I say, I wouldn't want to be working at those places anyways then if they were that judgemental from the get-go.
Besides, I personally will hire someone with tattoos who has a wonderful personality, is still appropriate and professional when needed and is personable over someone with no tattoos and isn't relatable or personable.

I worked at a higher level government recruiting agency and pretty much wore cardigans daily which is cool because I love cardigans and I’m freezing 99% of the time. Most other jobs I have only covered them for large meetings. I should add that I do have 2 tattoos on my left hand ring finger and no one has said a word. I’m fairly heavily tattooed at this point with a 3/4 blackout sleeve on my right arm which will be extended down on my hand with a design at some point later this year.

I worked there for 10+ years with no tattoos. Then out of the blue I walk in with a half sleeve on my forearm. Now, I got some looks. But most, if not all, were very accepting of them. I received no grief from my boss or the president of the college. In fact, I received many compliments from many of the folks on campus. And then a year later I got the other arm done. And the same thing. Also, no problems. So, I guess in my industry, it's a little more accepting being that it's a creative field and we're supposed to be a little different haha. That's just my experience.

I think it mostly depends what kind of tattoos you have
A greek tattoo sleeve will have a way better impression than a skulls and guns sleeve for example

I’ve never worried about tattoos in the workplace or during an interview (I’ve been asked to cover up however). I’ve worried more about my gauges. So much so that I own a pair of what I call fleshies. Their flesh colored and sort of hide the gapping holes in my ears.

My sons' MAs has a hand tattoo. I find that the hand tattoo is okay, as long as it's something respectable, like a lions face, or a rose for examples... skull hand tattoos seem frowned upon.

I was always told by my mom to not get any tattoos on my face neck and arms, for the most part I have no intention of getting them there, I like the idea of being able to cover them up with long sleeves or when I want to look professional in a suit or something, I recently went to MEPS for the military and I was so surprised at the amount of people who had tattoos but neck tattoos and hand tattoos and some of them can be overlooked by the military, I never knew that, I thought if you had neck tattoos or hand tattoos then you can’t enlist, I believe there are exceptions to allowing tattoos in the military though, not everything is acceptable.

Since I serve the public as part of the legal world, I keep my arm tattoos covered. I do this because I want to not because I have been told. As long as they are not offensive (mine are not) then the biz allows it.

Luckily I’ve had jobs where no one has problems with my tattoos. I worked at retail stores and customers would always give me compliments about how cool they look and they’ll even ask me where I get them done. I even work with a guy who has a bunch of tattoos as well and he’s from Hawaii too and he also has his hands, half of his neck, and a bit of his face tattooed

I am cool with tattoos but here is my take: I work in a demartologist office in Florida and see that 1/3 of our procedures are tattoo removals. I pretty much talk to all of them and the most common reason is that they are either having challenges with their careers or real trouble finding a good job. Almost all are tats below the wrist or neck up. Some stories are really sad.

I’ve only worked warehouse jobs for the past 13 years. I work two of them currently. Those types of jobs don’t really care about tattoos, piercings, hair, or clothing choices unless you’re a supervisor and up sometimes. Recently one of my jobs lifted the strict policy of supervisors, managers, and drivers having visible tattoos, unnatural hair color, piercings, long hair for men, and facial hair other than a mustache. The boomers and older Gen Xers are aging out of the workforce and millennials, who are the most tattooed, are taking over. Millennials and a lot of Gen X don’t give a damn about appearance as much. I’ve been to the DMV and bank recently and the workers there have tattoos on their hands and fingers. I see other professionals on Instagram who are doctors and etc with visible tattoos. It’s not a taboo thing anymore thankfully. Appearance doesn’t tell you who’s a good person or worker. People who say they won’t hire or get service from anyone with tattoos are ignorant and very close minded.

It's not valid here in the UK. Most organizations have a tattoo policy, which typically excludes overtly political, obscene or otherwise offensive tats. There are people in front-line local government jobs in this city with neck tattoos and full sleeves. A young lady who works at a local supermarket has small and non-offensive face tattoos. It's not considered a problem, because she's excellent at her job. Around 14% of teachers here are inked. 🤷‍♂️

I work in the mental health field. I have approximately two dozen tattoos (none that I couldn't cover, if asked to do so). I also have 30 piercings. I sometimes color my hair purple. None of these are unacceptable in this field. When I was working with teens, they were even an asset. Only once when working in crisis services, did a client not like them (he was schizophrenic and hyper religious) and I just pulled the sleeves of my top (long sleeves since it was Winter at the time) down to cover them. Any job that discriminates against tattoos, I would not want anyway! Btw I am 68 years wise.

I have a tattoo, it's on the inside of my wrist, making it easy enough to cover if need be. I work in security. When I did security work in hospitals, I had a regular roster that required me to wear plain clothes, and I wore short-sleeved shirts, exposing my tattoo. My boss told me to make sure I covered it up, but only after I showed him that it was there and asked him what he wanted done, given that he asked myself and the guard I worked with to remove our earrings

So I work security at Allied Universal. They where very strict at first. Especially since I have a full blown neck tattoo. I remember they had to call 3 people to see if they would make an exception.I was asked to always wear a turtle neck and long sleeves. I used to work 1st shift and they would be very strict if the tattoo would pop up, just a little I would attract attention from coworkers and supervisors.
Then I switch to 3rd shift and since I don’t see the higher ups or people in general I have no problems. Now everyone now and then I do cover 1st and 2nd shift but ….now they don’t say anything. I feel they just care if I do my job right. I think they just look pass it now. But I do wish I could extend my tattoos but I feel It feels I’m walking a tin line.

I’ve been asked to wear a suit jacket since my arms are mostly covered but I do work with the public. I didn’t take it as a bad thing but I just know some people still relate tattoos with something bad or trashy unfortunately. My friend just got a job and was thinking of me to work with her however, they told her they “don’t hire people with sleeves” so. That left me out lol I guess it all depends but I think it’s more and more acceptable with each year that passes. At least in terms of arms and such. Face and neck, that’s a different story lol

We're in the year 2024. Any employer who discriminates against tattoos has their heads stuck up their asses. I don't think in major cities like NY, Philly, L.A., etc. is this an issue in today's age. I could be wrong though. I work in corporate American and have a full arm sleeve tattoo, no issues here. I guess if it's on your hands, neck or face that could be a different story depending on the line of work your in.

I work in a conservative religious office and I am very visibly tattooed, including tattoos on my hands, throat, neck, and face. My circumstances are unique as to how I ended up working there and having all these tattoos and I consider myself very fortunate in that regard. I think for most people it would be quite a challenge to get hired in many work environments while having tattoos on the face, neck, throat, and/or hands, unless it's a very relaxed type of work environment, a skill trade with little interaction with the public, or unless they know someone who can get them through the door. First impressions mean a lot, and unfortunately there's still negative stigma with highly visibly tattoos, though not as much as there used to be before. Most of the tattoos that are becoming acceptable in work environments nowadays are in areas that can be covered. I also think that small "cute" tattoos on the hands and/or neck, especially for females, are getting more accepted in workplaces, as I see them more often on cashiers and other types of workers.

I waited until I was established in my career. I teach at a university. Frankly, the students really dictate what is ok in their environment and I was told the other day by a student that I had a 'cool prof' vibe. I also have earrings and longer hair. Nobody I work with has an issue with it but I do have to say I have built a strong track record and I am considered a dependable goto guy. That likely buys me some slack. I agree with the first guy...you need to show a bit of common sense. If you want to have tattoos saying vulgar things then don't expect certain clientele to want to work with you. That would be seen as a sign of an inability to make reasonable choices. Nobody wants a client facing person without good judgement and more and more of us, including myself, are client facing.

There is a study somwhere where they tried to find evidence on wether heavily tattooed people tend to have more psychopatic behaviors vs the ones who are not. The study surprisingly found out somewhat of an opposite result: tattooed people showed traits such as open mindness, less control need, empathy and creativity... :)
