???????????? Nobody thinks they're unemployed or lazy. It just gives really bad first impressions the first thing that comes to mind is gang related, prison, Felony's, bad person etc., and it scares some people. Companies can't have clients feeling uncomfortable or as if they can't trust them because it hurts them and others just think they're going to be robbed or have irresponsible drug dealing pot heads.
Tbh I like tattoos, I'd get a few here and there but I feel like id also ruin my life. There's times where I walk into barber shops and I really REALLY don't want to get my hair cut by the big guy with piercings and tattoos and Jordans on. I just don't feel comfortable with them. I know there are very sweet people out there with tattoos but others come off as mean and rude in my eyes and probably your everyday person or elderly

PenguinZ i think your problem is you’ve probably been raised hearing about tattoo stereotypes and tattoo stigma ! a lot of older generations associate tattoos with gang members or ex prison members and some of these ideas have been passed down to their kids. tattoos have become more fashionable now! it’s no longer a way to show social status in gangs etc it’s creative expression, and committing yourself to specific artworks, or creating a physical memorial to a past memory/person who is significant to you. someone who is heavily tattooed is someone who’s committed to something that is relatively life long (removal technology has come along way) and is expensive. if all their tattoos are good quality i’d say that reflects that they probably have good judgement more then anything else :)

I would seriously do this for free, since I have a disability myself (not hearing-based) and would love to make the world as accessible as possible. Usually videos have an option where the community can write in the captions themselves. However, this is a choice made by the creator/channel. Inked doesn’t allow this option unfortunately. Today, my calculus professor for this semester showed her sleeve and it made me so happy to see that she's the head of my university's math department and she can show them. I have a tattoo on my forearm and thigh and it's nice to see someone thrive in a professional career at a place I can do professional research at. I also work in a restaurant. 5 years ago, they wanted people to cover up their tattoos but as of the past 2 years they allow them to be shown as long as they aren't inappropriate or offensive.

@Bob Swiss being a professor at a university that requires her to lecture at conferences. Yes, shes a professor, but shes in a professional job. She has to represent my university and present research she does in mathematics. She has to dress professional, she has to be professional, she runs meeting and the math department. But she shows her tattoo, so yes- they are different things, but she is, in fact, both. Mindblowing how that works, right?

@@alexgonzalez1914 well I've had them for the past year or so, and it's actually become a great way for me to connect with people and tell my story. I work now as a manager at the restaurant (which a few years ago I would've had to wear sleeves to cover it) I've been working at and I have guests that see my tattoo on my forearm and have full conversations with me about it. And then I've just started to apply to grad school and I was speaking to one of the people I would like to do research under and it actually sparked an entire conversation between us. As well as when I work in my research lab and conduct experiments for my university with my professor and a few other research assistants, no one has cared- which I was nervous about because we can't show anything that'd be distracting or influence emotion (it's research in social psychology), but my professor said it was fine and I dont have to cover them.

My absolute favorite experiences are when senior citizens, 75+ come up to me and start a conversation with me about my tattoos in a positive light. Normally it's a woman and I think she's about to give me shit for my horror/macabre ink.
She instead comments on how good the line work is. How the artist was able to use the gray & white tones to create a different "feeling" to the overall presence, the color saturation and details he was able to punch in.
While I stand their dumbstruck that she, a blank canvas, even knows what these things are and isn't telling me that I'm going to Hell for marring the body Jesus sacrificed his life for.
The conversation normally ends with her telling me that she gained acceptance for tattoos when her granddaughter or grandson got one. That she/he now comes over every Tuesday night and they watch Ink Master together. A few times they've even told me that they've gone to conventions together.

I'm a nurse and I am so happy to say that recently the policy of not having visible tattoos has changed, at least where I work. I am very heavily tattooed and it's so great now that I don't have to wear long sleeves all the time and cover them up. I always hated trying to hide all my artwork and 90% of my patients, regardless of their age, comment on and love my ink. I've even had a couple doctors say they love it! I'm very happy that the stigma is finally going away...

Go to an interview in a long sleeve and don't even think about your tattoos because they are a non problem. If they have a rule in the handbook you sign, follow it, but if they find out you have tattoos later and have no written rule book then discuss it with them. Maybe if tattoos became a protected class or the stigma went away I'd throw that rule out but as long as we have discrimination for them I want to leave my options open

I also work in corrections and have worked in facilities where we call the population “residents.” Right now I work with Community Corrections (house arrest and such) and we call our folks “clients.” I prefer that to “defendant”....though we have to use defendant to refer to the clients when we appear in court. Some people will use the word “offender,” but I particularly dislike that term, as that’s what they are referred to in DOC. If we are expecting these people to change their lives and not repeat the same mistakes that got them to our program in the first place, then we need to give them a certain amount of respect and dignity, and treat them like members of the community...not prison inmates. Words have a lot of power.
That said, what dude in the video said is correct: my agency has no policy regarding tattoos, body piercings or what color or style you may wear your hair....all of which is pretty awesome!

    • @JackieHakalaJackson
      @JackieHakalaJackson 5 лет назад +29

Maybe that's because in a retail store or a restaurant you're interacting with 'outside clients', whereas with a lot of what you call professional fulltime jobs you mostly deal with people doing the exact same job as you. It's less about representing the company to the outside world. (Depends on the retailer too -I've seen H&Ms where literally all the employees were heavily tattooed and modified.)

Worked in banking operations management for 5+ years, would be covered wrists to ankles for 8-12 hours a day. Every company party, I would wear khaki shorts and get the stares. Being heavily tattooed in Hawaii is common practice but the banking, finance, insurance, and airlines industries here still have their hangups about it. I got my first tattoo while I was a Benedictine monk at age 18. I’ve since left the abbey (for reasons unrelated to my tattoos) and worked in education and healthcare. Now I work in HR and I moonlight as a hospice nurse. I even live in a real conservative area and my tattoos have never slowed me down work-wise. Employers want to make money. They respond to your ability to add value to their company way more than they respond to your appearance. Learn a handful of marketable skills and do them well and you’ll have an easier time in the workplace than people who look the part but don’t have anything going on between their ears.

Isn't being fired from your job for having tattoo's discrimination? I understand if a company has a policy against showing tattoo's and you know about it before hand but if there is no policy seems to me it's discriminating.

    • @tdr3471

Unfortunately, the law is really specific about stuff like that - it's only discrimination if you're fired on religious or racial grounds. Tattoos come under a breach of dress code or uniform. If you don't fit their 'professional' visual standard, they're allowed to send you home

    • @0rderoutofchaos

For the Uk- it’s not discrimination unless it’s a protected characteristic such as gender, sexual orientation, race etc. If you were taken through a disciplinary and dismissed, you could claim unfair dismissal after 2 years of working. Most employers don’t have a policy on it- we don’t. When a new manager challenged us on having tattoos on show and bright coloured hair- no policy so she couldn’t enforce it ( in social work as well which was ironic)

    • @TheRazorTongue
      @TheRazorTongue 5 лет назад +16

Unfortunately I don't think it is protected. And it's even less protected if you're in a Right to Work state. They can fire you for any reason. But you can sue for unemployment if they do it wrong. Usually they want to document your firing to avoid this.
They really hate paying their employees. And the only thing they hate more is paying them unemployment.

I live in New Zealand and we are a heavily tattooed nation, so it's not really a big issue here. Lawyers, doctors, veterinarians, bankers, whatever industry you can think of will have people with at least one exposed tattoo. I am a swim coach for one of the country's best surf clubs, a swim instructor to old and young, and I am an early childhood teacher and it would never occur to me to cover my tattoos, or for other people to cover their own. I'm a preschool teacher for 2 year old Autistic children (and I also have a full shoulder to shoulder sugar skull / flower piece, and not my only tattoo but my biggest) and in the summer we do let the children play with water play items even take them to a spray park and I wear a tank top and my babies (yes I call my students my babies) love the colors in my tattoo.. Actually all the kids love my tattoo.. But sadly with society some people still think everyone with a tattoo is a drug addict, uneducated, low life...
Well correction.. Don't judge a book by it's cover.. I'm very educated (due to I'm also a certified pharmacy technician but started working with special needs children when my own son was diagnosed with Autism) and the way I see it.. Have a special meaning behind the tattoo or they can become regrets. A tattoo just to get a tattoo. I have a scar on my arm from trying to kill myself back in 2012, and the way the nurses had to cut both sides to access the veins, makes it look like a swastika. I happen to be white. The staples I had taken out that were there to keep it closed, made it look like a little dotted outline as well. I have gotten judged for it before. Crazy how people can assume shit, without knowing anything at all about what they're judging.

Tattoos are getting normal, professional sport players have tattoos, engineers at NASA have tattoos, doctors, chefs, actors and the stigma will always be there, people will find ANY reason to hate on you, fuck it.

I work with the elderly and have loads of tattoos. Most of them are so chill about them all. I try to cover them all anyway just because I didn't get them to intimidate anyone, I got them for the art, but don't want anyone getting the wrong idea.

What people dont know is that when you get your first tatoo you have to beat up the first pedestrian you see otherwise it disappears when you go to bed. Also you can only work in a bank when you have a 100$ bill tatooed on your forehead so everyone can see that you know what money is, basic tatoo knowledge man ;)
Tatoos make life so much easier for example when i see a girl in bikini and she has text tatooed on her which i usually couldnt see i can easily approach her because now i know all the words she knows, works for both genders btw....
Or did you know that people that have guns tatooed on them can be used as such once you inserted the magazin that is.
    -SAFETY WARNING-
Test subjects seem to dislike the loading part tough and will fight fiercly to prevent loading the gun therefore i am not jet 100% sure where the bullet will come from

I have been a nurse for 8 years and will pursue law school soon. I have a tat of Africa on my left hand near my thumb...as well as various pieces on my arms. It always boils down to my performance, work ethics, and demeanor. Never had an issue.

Wow I love this video and the truth behind it. Especially regarding the assumptions that people make on first glance. I hope people have learned from the experience from these people specifically and will see that if someone has tattoos it doesn’t mean that they’re a bad person. There’s all kinds of kinds.

I also work in finance at a bank and I have tattoos, some show, some don't. I think the area in the country you work, and the position you have makes a difference. It's a stigma that sucks and needs to go.

Thank you for uploading the video and sorry for commenting a year late! 😅
I'm tattooed(quite visibly), held a job as a teacher for two years, and have been working in an office for the past 8 years on two different corporate positions.. and it has all been in South Korea.
I think that as time passes people are becoming significantly more accepting and less biased about tattooed people in the work place.
What's funny is that it was mostly my peers and family members that thought I would have difficulty getting a job due to my tattoos.. but in reality it hasn't been a problem. The ugly looks usually come mostly from complete strangers who don't know you. Based on my experience, employers and co-workers have been completely fine, and even appreciated my tattoos, when I proved that my tattoos were not stopping me from getting work done.
It's 2020 - it is safe to say that you're best off avoiding any employer who will fire or not hire someone purely based on his/her tattoos.

I love tattoo's although I don't have any myself, I always wanted a few. I think tattoo's are beautiful and they all have different meaning for each person. Some people say their tattoo's are a picture of their journey through life. If I got a tattoo that means the most to me it would be Chief Joseph of the Nez Perce Indian Tribe. He is my Great-great-great Grandfather. My cousin did a pencil drawing of him about 45 years ago and it is hanging on my wall. That is the picture I want on my back, in the same size as the drawing. It is a magnificent portrait of a proud and magnificent man. I simply do not have the money or a way to get to a tattoo artist that I would trust with the job!! Black and grey is my favorite and that is how I want my Grandfathers picture to be, black and grey, and stunning.

Getting my first tattoo, my mom was *soo* concerned about what if it makes me unemployable. Which just....kinda boggles my mind. I'm quite openly out as a queer woman, I already stand out and if I have to hide my tattoo, chances are I'm gonna have to hide shit that I simply will never hide and that job just isn't going to work out anyway.

I feel like that woman getting asked at a concrete conference took it the wrong way.. she was told by the person that they were pleasantly surprised, if they support it and learn it can be done isn't that a positive?? Like why was she upset there's nothing wrong or unusual about assuming that because plenty of companies and people judge harshly and would treat you differently. I know I'm waiting to get tattoos until I'm positive my career will be accepting because otherwise I'll have to get discreet tattoos

I use to work in retail admin/HR stuff. I'm a small woman and I have a lot of skulls and "dark" tattoos, and my boss made me cover my stuff up. My coworkers who had like script or flowers were fine to have there ink showing. Depending what your ink is I think has a lot to do with it.

European law states we must be tattooed to be employed. Senior roles require the most ink, so judges, politicians, medical consultants, etc. must have full body suits. Police, teachers & civil servants have to have at least a full sleeve. The unemployable are this easy to spot as they have no tattoos whatsoever.
