For years, I only knew of the original one, and I thought it was perfect and couldn't possibly ever be topped. Then, just a week ago, I don't know I missed it for almost 7 years, I got to know of this cover, and... I honestly have to say I like it better. The original was very moving, but it still felt like a plead, to listen to the warning, with a hope that people might. The much more somber and then outright angry and explosive take of Disturbed is like it's saying that 50 years later, they're gutted and sad that nobody took the warning seriously, and then they just burst out in frustration over knowing that nothing will change, nobody will listen to the warning, society is doomed, all the warnings fell on deaf ears, and how they're disappointed in people for acting like that, and showing that they have no more hope, because there is no more hope to find anywhere. It's a beautiful song, but the 50 years after cover conveys so many more emotions, and gets so much under my skin. Nothing short of a masterpiece.

Decades ago I listened to a show where Paul's music was being discussed. It was around the time of his Graceland album. Some (I've forgotten) associate or friend said that one of the reasons for his success was that, even from his very first recording, he refused to record unless the recording equipment was the absolute best available. He demanded that same perfection from anyone else involved. Knowing this, hearing that Paul posted Disturbed's cover is remarkable. Of course, that cover -- IS -- phenomenal!

You know This is a great song written by Paul Simon in the 60's,the era of folk music. No one sang like this then and it they did people would have hated it..Art Garfunkle has a great voice also and together they did this song and it became an enduring classic. The fact that a heavy metal band was familiar with it and wanted to do a cover of it speaks volumes. Comparing the two is ludicrous. They are both beautiful versions and Disturbed did not change the song so much that it was unrecognizable. He was reacting to a question when he made the comment about whether Paul thought it was better. I don't think he was being egotistical.

Has a lot to do with who David Draiman is, and what Simon & Garfunkel are and have always been to the Jewish community. David, Disturbed’s lead singer, was a trained Cantor (singer that leads Synagogue in worship), ready to follow in his father’s footsteps - who is a Cantor. The American Folk revival movement of the 60s, which was birthed from musicians all over the country moving to Greenwich Village & collaborating alongside the beatnik scene; was largely shaped by Jewish musicians & songwriters assimilating Yiddish Folk music.
The revival specifically started when primarily Jewish & Black activists riffed on Americana Folk as a form of social criticism against the racism and Antisemitism of the original “Whites Only” social construct of “American Folk” from the early-1900s (aka the really bad folk music everyone pretends didn’t exist). They took the genre, turned it inside out, and created something fresh and revolutionary.
In the Jewish community, we all know Simon & Garfunkel, regardless of the generation - and of course a Cantor’s son is going to grow-up on a healthy diet of their music, along with the other icons. So, when you look at if from that perspective, it was inevitable a heavy metal band headed by David Draiman was going to pay homage to one of his greatest inspirations. It’s also no coincidence this was put out during the highest rate of Antisemitism in American history since McCarthyism (over 50 years ago). This is when David became more outspoken about his Jewishness, Antisemitism he experienced growing-up & in the Metal scene.
One of Disturbed’s biggest hits, “Stupify,” is about the hatred & bigotry he experienced from his Mexican high school girlfriend’s father, for being Jewish:
“Why do you like playing around with my narrow scope of reality? I can feel it all start slipping away” - Calling-out the father’s ignorant disposition
“All La Gente in the Barrio” - reference to his girlfriend’s LA neighborhood, full of one oppressed minority foolishly scapegoating another.
“Tefached” - Hebrew for “be afraid” or “fear” (chanted in the song’s breakdown)
And just for reference, here’s just a few of the most influential Jewish American Folk Musicians/Groups: Bob Dylan, Phil Ochs, Leonard Cohen, Peter Yarrow (of Peter, Paul & Mary), Fred Hellerman & Ronnie Gilbert of The Weavers (Peter Seeger wasn’t Jewish, but got famous singing Jewish/Yiddish folk songs just like Joan Baez with “Tzena Tzena”), Allen Sherman, Woody Guthrie, “Ramblin’” Jack Elliot, New Lost City Ramblers, Albert Grossman, Phish, Henry Sapoznik (Cantor’s son, folk musicologist, banjo-player, klezmer revival in 1970s), Judy Collins, David Gahr, Doc Pomus, Izzy Young, etc + all the Producers, Managers, and folk Music Label Founders that made the Folk Revival & Blues movement possible at a time when it was viciously boycotted & attacked by WASPs, HUAC, Feds & McCarthyism. MANY ended-up blacklisted or victims of COINTELPRO by Hoover’s FBI as a result.

We all knew that there was some raw talent shining through in Disturbed even amongst the corporate nu-metal era of the 2000s, but boldly covering, paying homage and even improving upon an original is ways is as rare a thing as there is in the music world. It proves how much of artists they are when you begin to think of them beyond the narrow confines of their frequent genre

doesnt really mean different things to people. However the meaning behind the song has changed. Paul and Art sang it as a light, airey and gentle warning to all.
