"Standing guard would be a beast, I'd somehow overwhelm it" He does not want to slay the beast as he knows what it is like to be the beast.
I didn’t notice that part. That’s very impactful.
Aw… that detail actually feels very moving to hear pointed out. Shrek is too good of a person. To hurt a beast.
Also "slay it" doesn't rhyme with helmet
LOVE THAT!!
I love that he isnt necessarily talking about changing how he looks. He is talking about the worlds perception of his looks and the roles he feels hes been denied at due to those perceptions. He doesnt have a problem with how he looks, he is a very confident person in that regard. He just wants to feel he has a fair shot at the world despite his appearance. Thats what i get anyway
Someone who gets it. I've had trouble trying to explain people before that this isn't really about Shrek wanting to be a hero. It's more about what he thinks life is like for people who get to be human.
3:22 "And carry her away" gives me chills all the time, so goooddd
So true
can we take a second to appreciate the MIXING?!
to paraphrase another musical, GOD THAT'S GOOD.
I see what you did there, lol!
You don't have to dream of being a hero, Shrek...you are one. 🤗🥰
Yes so shrexy
One of the best songs from this musical
1:38 this perfectly timed voice break is what cements this as my favorite version of shrek
It’s so good! I keep replaying it!!
My favorite too I can sing it all the time
Don’t know why, but him singing all alone at 1:41 always gives me chills because of how good it is.
Than the singer succeeded
The power, control and volume from Foster's 'By candle light' at 3:20 never fails to amaze me despite the hundreds of times seeing this clip/song. It roams over the others and compliments both Shrek and Donkey's vocals. (Assisted by the world class Broadway techies). A true broadway star indeed.
Donkeys “your all alone” gives me chills so bad
2:52 My favorite part of the musical.
I’ve watched this musical too many times, but not enough
Honestly same
I love that they gave him bushy eyebrows as Brian has those. A little bit of Brian showing through 2:09
I would sit on nails as long as I could listen to brian sing.
I played this pit for a big local production of this, I had a blast playing trumpet!
One of my absolute favorite musicals. This cast was perfect!! So glad Netflix picked it up a few years ago and its getting new attention almost 10 years later 🙌🏿🙌🏿
i swear to god i cry every time i hear this song
I do too!! I'm weeping right now!!
Eu também 🥹🥹 é perfeitaaaaaa
my favorite song in this musical i cant.
This musical and the song itself are soo taken for granted. The amount of people who could relate to this, being someone they want to be, like a fantasy, because it wont happen unless you try. There are so many meanings behind this song, this is the most listened to song from me. I cant stop listening. Even the ending when Donkey and Fiona join in, super amazing and impactful. You guys did an amazing job.
Hate on this musical all you want but it’s so fun and lively. Not to mention this song is so beautiful and touching this musical will always have a special place in my heart.
The lyricism in this song is so good. When I first heard it I got chills and felt so inspired. Honestly my favorite song in the musical 💜
It’s upsetting how good this song is.
This song honestly brings tears to my eyes 😭 it’s so beautiful!
I listen to this song all the time, I swear this video is both slightly sped up and has distorted audio
It definitely is sped up cause on the album you can hear Brian D’arcy James rich baritone voice and here he seems to have the brightness and lightness of a tenor voice
It’s shifted up a minor 2nd
this is for copyright reasons, so-
Imagine how much more significant this song would have felt if Shrek didn't actually sing because his characterization as a grump who doesn't go along with the genre was kept intact until this moment.
I personally think its better like this, mainly bc the point is he's opening up or letting go of that grumpiness to tell his dreams
Love that idea tho

Are you suggesting a play or like a play where the characters are talking with music playing in the background where the characters don’t actually sing the songs?
My favorite song from this musical ❤❤❤❤❤
I love this song, it gives so much depth to Shrek.
I'm incredibly excited to be doing Shrek Jr. (especially since I'm playing Shrek), but I'm a little upset that this song was removed from the Jr. version, as i think it adds so much to Shrek's character. It's also just a really good song.
ARE YOU FR? ITS THE BEST SONG IN THE WHOLE MUSICAL 😭😭😭
JUST CLOSED LAST WEEK!! ( I played fiona) I understand it was probably intentional due too the vocals probably cut too make it easier for younger voices.
@@dayday5776 Yeah, and plus it's not like the song NEEDS to be there in order for the story to make sense. Songs like Forever and I Know It's Today are essential in understanding the story, while this song is more so just added for flavor.
@@mack_r-s Yeah for sure
Not them always taking out the best songs in the junior versions😭, still salty about “The Bottom Line” being cut from newsies junior when i was Pulitzer (this is literally one of they few songs I like from this show and I actually love this song)
I just wanted to add this. I love this musical, and this specific song too!! It gives me chills, and just wanted to appreciate the character of Donkey, he truly sees Shrek as he should be seen! He sees that Shrek is alone and Donkey is willing to be his pal, he reiterates “you need a pal, my calendars open.” I love that part too :’) (3:12)
who would've thought the greatest song in musical theatre would be from Shrek the musical..... jeanine Tesori is a genius
OMG... THIS SONG! THIS SONG!!!! ♥ I love this cast (and the song, of course...)
The best song in the musical
i can't stop replaying 2:52
My 3rd favorite song of all time behind Signal Fire and love story
3:00 Donkey - "ALL ALOOOONE!!"
If Shrek hadn’t sung in Act 1 until now, this would’ve been better
hahahahah❤❤❤❤😂Love
IT❤❤❤❤❤❤❤😢😮
3:28 A Petfect Happy Ending
Is the fourth one I love Shrek musical and I've watched it about 14 times
God, I hate the studio version of this, I wish the live version was on spotify!
If they ever did a live action Shrek I'd want the people who did his makeup and him to play Shrek and do the makeup
this is so funny pitched up a whole step. why did they do that to this video
🎵 but we all learn but we all learn an ogre alway hide an ogre faith is know an ogre alway stay in the dark and all alone 🎵 1:26 2:52
Brian conveys so much through even just his body language over the course of this song.
In the very opening "I guess I'd be a hero," Shrek says it because it was the first, easiest thing that came to mind because of what he'd been through up to that point. Then, when singing about being a Viking, it's him getting a little more into it and thinking about what would be really fun for him. Then, it's like he's on a roll, so he starts thinking it could be great for him to be a poet, too, and express the things that have always been on his heart. This gets Shrek thinking in a more colorful, honestly poetic way, so it dawns on him that he really WOULD like to be a hero who rescues a damsel and has a happy ending. Then, reality dawns on him that ogres (In his mind, at least) can't be heroes.
All this, conveyed through Brian's performance in less than three minutes! BRAVO
Still shocked that’s literally Hannah bakers DAD
top demais
I’m violent tears rn guys 😢❤
1:32
I love how catchy this song is
😂😂😂
he didn't have to go this hard
This is one of my favorite songs in the home musical. I love the story behind it and how Brian perfectly conveys the feeling behind it. The only part I do not like is when Sutton Foster starts singing. And this is notice to Foster. I love all her parts in the play, I just feel like this was Shrek's moment and then she kind of interrupts it. Because she hasn't lived with other people, hating her and needing to hide away. She has been secluded which is her own difficulties but she should have a chance to talk about it later and she kind of does in the song I think I got you. I just feel like it would have been better if it had only been Shrek in this song
Its a shame that this song isn't in Shrek the Musical Jr.
Why would they skip this song
@@pink-a-palouza7888 I guess they want to shorten it.
@@pink-a-palouza7888I think it's mainly because if you compare it to other songs like I know It's Today and Forever, Who I'd Be is not AS essential to the plot as those other ones (as in, it can be cut from the musical with little consequences). If I know It's Today and Forever were cut, we wouldn't get to see Fiona or the dragon's key characteristics and motives, and the story wouldn't make sense anymore. Meanwhile with Shrek, we can still understand his character without Who I'd Be, even if it's more simple than in the full version.
He great actor as shrek
Shame you can’t hear the majestic brass fanfares! But other than that, a beautiful version of this powerhouse act one closing number.
Note for Note this is exactly the same as the recorded version
BDJ is the perfect Shrek
I 😂❤
3:00
I think it would have been much better if Shrek only sang this and Big Bright Beautiful World Reprise.
If I was given a second chance in life, I'd try and be either a famous author, or a 2D animator, or if was given a chance to be something magical, I could be a demi god and protect the world from the forces of evil. Whichever one it could be, or ones I haven't thought of, it just would be nice, fun, and great to be a hero.
They should put Shrek's parents in Shrek 5
They shouldn't be making Shrek 5 at all! Let the Shrek and his family retire. They deserve it.
Shrek singing about him being a hero is the most UnShrekiest thing I could imagine.
hes singing about WANTING to be a hero
If you watched the full musical, you would understand
Let's explore that claim.
Shrek never wanted to be the bad guy he was forced into that life by a prejudiced society.
As an ogre he is destined to be the bad guy, it makes sense that the alternative would seem so attractive.
you... you didn't watch shrek 2 right?
Not so shrexy of him
2 time
I don't know if I should be impressed by the cosplay or laugh(not in a bad way). I'm having mixed feelings
Cosplay?
It's not cosplay if it's live theater, dude. It's just a costume.
@@Allycat-VA182Someone who doesn't know the difference between Comic Con and live theater, apparently.
@@etcetera1995 It's laughable
I have very mixed feelings for this musical, but i love this song so much
The playlist on Spotify is not good
But not for me
q miedo
It sucks
The only good song in the musical lmao
I thought morning person was pretty good
honestly all the songs are really good, some of them just don’t compare to others. like the opening title is probably my favorite just cause of shrek’s run at the end
Agreed
i literally love every song 😂
just wrong 😭
