I am truly so glad to hear that your child recovered. I am happy to be a witness to as many good and happy endings/beginnings as the world can provide. Bless you both.
To be fair, colm was a bit past his prime by this time. I love them both. Alfie I think if the more classically proficient singer. Colm brings more heart and emotion.
Shall I 'say' something personal? Why not: I'm willing to be vulnerable. When I listen to this I find myself singing along, not very well, but.. and then tears track down my cheeks. The words remind me of my son, who is long gone. By the end of the song, I wipe my tears, and feel blessed that we have music in our lives, and I reflect on all that is good in this world. it's okey to miss loved ones and it's okey to go on, somehow enriched by what the arts give us that gets us in the touch with our humanity. So...thanks you four amazing Tenors.
My son would be 50 tomorrow (September 3) had he survived an aneurysm in 1995. I have always coped with the loss by sobbing, shamelessly crying like a baby. And to initiate the process after these many years I play a version of "Bring Him Home" which always triggers the release of the grief that will always be a part of me. I am not for a moment surprised that you also have a deeper relationship with this song and all the arts. I suggest there are legions of us. Bless you all.
Thank you so much for sharing that John. So many people lost someone that should have lived a long life. Whether it be about love or loss, the arts reach us on deep levels and this is what makes them so important.
I'm sorry for the loss of your loved ones. This song always brings to mind and heart, my beautiful brother, Steve. He died from cancer in 2004 at the age of 49. He is never far from my thoughts. Blessings to you all.
The first time I heard this, I just stood in front of the tv in a trance. Colm and John were perfect, and then Simon kicked it up a notch with his slightly deeper voice. Then when Alfie was allowed to take it to another level, he really delivered! I get goose bumps every time I listen to his first few verses. All of them do outstanding versions when singing the traditional stage version of Bring Him Home, so no need to argue about who's the best... they all earned the right to play the lead role in Les Mis.
OK that would be SICK Especially because it would allow Roger Allam to take a stab at the ending to Stars, which he didn't get to do in his run (at least as far as I can tell from the cast recording)
I'm not a musical theatre buff, so I'm maybe not qualified but the first time I heard this was Colm, and been obsessed ever since and im sorry to disappoint the Boe fans, and it sounds like maybe he's the most technically gifted singer to play this part from what I hear but this song to me belongs to Colm. The 10th anniversary version is absolutely stunning. Just wow.
Colm Wilkinson's voice just stands out loud and clear. It has a natural power, and a strong falsetto that sets the standard for this song. No one sings it like him.
This song always makes me a little sad. Perhaps it is because I never had children. But it is great to know from the comments that this amazing song helps people who have lost children or other loved ones. It is good to know that it can have a positive effect and not just trigger reminders of terrible loss. I feel that this song and this musical brings together all who hear and see it and all who love it. We all wish we could bring someone special "home."
My wife has always said these are the four sweet arc angels singing to god as christ was crucified and how the tears must of fallen from those angels and how god himself wept when he brought the most precious to teach us to love ..but ..sweet god said three days little ones ....it will be okay ...and he was resurrected
I'm a Church Chorister and I know this as' The Prayer' and indeed it is that! A prayer! And hearing it again always brings me some great solace and brings me into touch with my own feelings. I sometimes feel alone but I'm not on my own! It's there for me! And that enables me to access these feelings and deal with it.
Now 83, I started attending Broadway musicals in NYC when I was 19. I have seen some great ones, but right at the top is Les Miserable. The Texas trio along with 2 superstars who performed Valjean , Alfie and Colm. Bring Him Home is one of the best hymns to come from a Broadway play., while Les Miz is the ultimate musical that brings tears to the eyes of the most jaded! I saw Les Miz in Washington, DC, before it opened on Broadway...and have seen it 7 more times since then. Pure joy,
Not anymore. I saw Alfie Boe in Pavilion Bournemouth Last Friday he was terrible. People were walking out. Including us. The staff said they had nothing but complaints he Yes Alfie Boe was SO BAD. Kidding himself he was a “Pop star”!!! Very sad waste of £100 a ticket. NEVER AGAIN. 😢
No matter how many times I hear this is give me chills at the pure perfection of the four Valjeans singing what I consider to be the song that defines the character
Goosebumps!!! I read the novel as a teenager, but it was not until I had sons that this song made me cry. It now makes me think of all the sons, around the world, who go to war and leave praying parents behind.
4 marvelous individual performances and the first three combined so well. No doubt an unpopular opinion, but I was lulled out of the beautiful, gentle, plaintive prayer-like vulnerability of the song when Alfie Boe came belting in. It felt like being in a room immersed in a wonderful song when suddenly someone comes in, turns on their own chosen tune at a higher volume and drowns yours out.
I wish I had been able to see Colm in this role. This song makes me cry every time. I had the pleasure and honor of seeing Colm in Toronto for Phantom on more than one occasion and had the chance to meet him after one of the performances. He was very gracious and kind; a true gentleman.
What we just heard and witnessed was the passing of the torch... and the honor and gratitude of the next generations toward the man who lit it. Beautiful.
I saw Colm in Les Mserable and FELL IN LOVE...What a performance...also saw him in Phantom of the Opera....Sooo long ago...and still love that man...What a voice.....Now I also love Alfie Boa...What voices the have
All four gentlemen do an outstanding job. But I have to say, Colm Wilkinson is my man. It baffles my mind that somehow his voice, after all these years, seems to have only gotten richer and more emotive. I have listened to him in my home thousands of times over the last thirty years. If I ever met him in person, I would probably start weeping like a young girl meeting her teen idol.
@@HollyKesleyI'm a pain because I'm overly critical of all the technical stuff and you can't really beat Alfie in that department but John Owen Jones is ridiculously good.
I'm a church chorister! As I take hearing this - I'm reminded of how we have all suffered. But let us live ! And as a church chorister. My duty defines here of how we should bring all of us home.
I watched this performance live, I have never cried such joyful tears, so much since I saw the Three Tenors live. This was such an amazing concert. I pray to G-d daily for this horrible virus to go away, and bring our theatres and performers out again to warm our hearts.
The first time I saw this piece was the Encore of Les Mis 25th at the O2. Alfie was allowed to turn it loose, and all the other professionals were blown away. But what a great quartet. May be one of the best of all time.
I just love this song. I first heard it when a group called The Soldiers sang it. My dad told me it was from Les Miserables and showed me a video of Colm singing. It just blew my mind. I then saw on video Alfie singing it and I was in tears. I just love the song and the musical it is from. I often sing it when I hear it.
Absolutely fabulous, cry every time to this, my Uncle never came home from the Second World War & my dad & his ma & pa were broken hearted all through my growing up, this song always stirred their souls. Akways a tear, everytime x
Always loved this song and normally I can hold my tears back when I hear it but with this version I find my self tearing up by the time the first note is played. X
Scrolling thru my RUclips feeds, I’m amazed and pleased that several of these Les Mis videos are still one my playlist. Bring Him Home is the quintessential show stopper, and I’m glad to have been able to perform it on a few occasions, certainly not on the level of these performers, but pleasing my audience just the same.
Just fantastic, performed this song many times. Technically very hard, brilliant you four, nuff said. you're my mentors even at 42 yrs guys. Keep going at it. Mike
I've heard this - so many times before! And each time I have felt like crying! They're all tremendous but when Alfie Boe takes up the mantle of it! I'm feeling especially vulnerable and feel very fragile. I know the words and this is as close to a actual prayer! But I see my vulnerability and fragility only too well!'
Brilliant. I was lucky enough to have seen Les Mis with some of the original cast and never tire of the tracks. Love Colm Wilkinson, but love love love Alfie Boe. ♥
Dear Lord, I cannot stop watching this for two days now! Gave me goosebumps...so beautiful. Had my husband watch it and he told me it gave him goosebumps as well.

Sublime, spectacular, ... This song touch my soul. Alfie is great, so spiritual and the other tenors are amazings. God bless their voices and bring him home! 🎶
Saw Colm twice in Toronto as Valjean. To hear him sing this live literally gives you goosebumps. Standing O’s both times after the song. Very unusual during a performance.
When my son laid in hospital very ill with malaria and bleed on the brain this song gave me so much comfort ....thankfully he fully recovered xx🙏🙏

Wow, to recover from malaria! Unreal!!! Thank you God!!!!
Bravo, no one can beat Colm on this song. He is just mesmerizingly brilliant.
For sure it was written for him so he'll always be one of the best or the best, never say never, but damn.
Alfie Boe for me!
Alfie Boe
Colm is good but he just doesn’t compare to the power of Alfie’s voice. Alfie is on a whole nother level!!!
To be fair, colm was a bit past his prime by this time. I love them both. Alfie I think if the more classically proficient singer. Colm brings more heart and emotion.

I agree with your assessment of this. Completely!

With three young adult sons scattered across the country during this Age of the Virus, this song means more to me than ever before. It is my prayer.
I just saw this comment. I pray your sons are well. I too was not with my sons during the pandemic and I prayed every night that they were kept safe.
There are far far more dangerous things in life for a young man .....
Alfie Boe elevates this to another level. The power, the precision, the perfection.
