I can't get into VSTs and IRs. I've used them plenty and theyve kept me going but I prefer to record a real amp even if it's something tiny like this. A real amp even a tiny solid state just responds more naturally to me especially when boosting.
First amp, Marshall Lead 12 practice combo amp. I think I still have it but its buried in my dads garage. I think the HM2 would actually pair nice with that amp. Or any HM2 clone.
I modded mine with some different value pots, a cab-out a Celestion Ten Thirty and a built in boost. Its... surprising... to anyone thats plugged into it. And yes, I use the CD jack as loop. You can't control the volume, except with the input device, but it bypasses the tone stack and gives you immaculate clean base signal. A tip for any amp, but especially these solid state practice amps, is that they all have a unique 'sweet spot'. You find it by zeroing out all the controls and one by one in isolation, slowly turn it from min to max until you find the ~25% of the range that changes the most/fastest. Then work within that range to find a tone and style that works with it.
The Rage on its own seemed a bit lacking in "oomph" and I would surmise that is because the post gain was so low. I don't know your living situation but I assume cranking up an amp (even a little one) is probably not feasible. However, once the HM2 was engaged it was a perfectly usable tone, so not a huge issue with the low volume. Never owned a rage myself. My first amp was a Ampeg SS70 1x12 combo, which was way more amp than I needed as a starting musician but I am glad I had one once I got to playing shows, wish I never lent it to a friend. Have no idea where in the world it is now. :(
Stayed for all the ads, coz I think it's important for you to make some $! Who else has told you this?! I know it has nothing to do with your "content" which I enjoy as well! Just saying....🤘🤘
All the Hardcore and Thrash guys lived for this thing, and then Shoegazers. Death? Why not? edit: The headphone jack doubles as a Line Out, it's just not buffered.
I have a peavey rage 15 hooked up to a 10” speaker. It’s pretty good, I want to upgrade the speaker though. The cd input trick is awesome with the right preamp
I have a red stripe efx 258. 10 more watts than the rage plus i have it housed in a 1x12 cab with eminence legend speaker. My version is the best death metal amp..the eminence legend 12 inch made all the difference honestly. I run helix preamps in front and it sounds amazing.
what makes me wonder is that when I put my 158 on Lead with my distortion pedal, then turn the pedal on I get a massive screech like feedback and I have no clue why. I've been trying to replicate the tone from Avenged Sevenfold with it but I have no luck either
Gain can only be added on top of gain for so much until it's just all the gain all the time. A great example is if you try using a distortion pedal in front of Channel 3 of the Dual Rec or similar 3 channel high gain amp. The amp is already doing all of the gain duty, so adding more gain will only boost the noise and background artifacts of your guitar pickups instead of the theoretical "moar gain". Guitar signal is only a simple voltage wave (current if you're an EE) so maxxing out the voltage (current) to the amps power section will only saturate the signal with noise and feedback. 🤘
Mine was Roland Microcube. Little box sounded good enough but I`ve sold it after getting into VSTs and IRs. Hell, I wish I haven`t.

I have one of those. I use it as power amp for my preamps pedal's. But also I use the lead channel as well. Very nice review Dome.
You could use a stereo cable from the headphone out for direct tones into a daw. Seems to work for my setup.
Not breaking your stuff is always a good choice! Rock on!

never thought about modding the rage but that sounds like a brilliant idea!

I don't like too much volume, I prefer a rather quiet sound so that it doesn't fatigue the ears... But I know what you mean!
Thank you for your useful review!

You, sir, are my personal hero of the day 🥰
I got the KMA Gaurdian of the Wurm a few months ago, I love it.

The first version was my first amp I had and I had the red stripe later on.

Going to run my pepers pedals Fury 158 pedal through my katana, this should be fun
I must collect them all............someday.......
Qué me recomienda?
Peavey Rage 258 con altavoz Blue Marvel 8" 25watts ?
Peavey Bandit 112 altavoz 12" Peavey 80watts ?
subbed instantly once i saw the intro. cant want to check out your content brother. thank you :D
I'm betting the harsh highs have to do mostly with the blue marvel speaker
Might be, however unlikely, because they disappear when I use the MT-2 in the Line In ;)

most likely too much distortion

I had a red stripe as a teenager and sold it, I didn't know what I had at the time 🤦
what's that book on the shelf called " *something* Death Metal"?
Swedish Death Metal 😉
Chuck Shuldiner Death Metal .... he was the father of this genre. R.I.P. Chuck you'll be never forget
@@DomeNightbearer
I still wanna get a LWA LHW Deluxe, or The Brick.
haha, get both🤣
@@DomeNightbearer Brick + LWA LHW Deluxe versus Guardian of the Wurm?
Which?
two totally different approaches to the HM2 sound. It highly depends on taste, but they also complement each other nicely!
Sounds black metal
All that for a fucking Metalzone tone?
