BEST BRUTAL BUDGET METAL AMP - Peavey Vypyr
HTML-код
- Опубликовано: 3 май 2021
- Trying out the Peavey Vypyr. I had one many years back and remember it being pretty kicks. Refreshed my memory today and yeah it is still one of the best BRUTAL sounding budget amplifiers out there.
Also yeah I've already upgraded it so stay tuned for that video.

Best Brutal Sounding Budget Amplifier! No question...
I have a bunch of peavey amps thinking about making my c4 synth pedal into a stereo bass rig
I still think Katana sounds better!
Cheers from Portugal 🍺🤘🇵🇹
Btch stands for Butcher its a Peavey model and Budda is another brand of Peavey
Do it! Put a v30 in there!
Sorry Ola, but there is a very important question, where is vageena?
Finally, a guitarist that I can relate to, using inexpensive gear and mostly playing palm muted open C chords
Guess you missed all his videos with mesas, Randall's, engls, orange and Marshall amps
Lmao you must be new. Enjoy sir!
So what are you trying to say actually?
@@nategin9009 Orange is inexpensive
@@aniquinstark4347 you think 3300 for a tube head is inexpensive?
I used to work at a guitar shop and this was my go to suggestion for anyone starting off who liked rock or metal. There's nothing even close to comparable at a similar price point.
I recommend Peavey for any style of music. They simply build the best amps on Earth
@Дядя Толя You can make black metal with whatever you want
@dydycat 35 yes. Make sure you're using active pickups. Pickups make all the difference
@Граф Гришнак they have a higher output, so some believe they sound best for high gain sounds
@@benmiddleton9984 does a Epiphone SG have active pickups?
I love my Peavey Vypyr 15 Digital Modelling Amp from 2010. Has so many great pre-programmed sounds on it and it's become my #1 amp now.
Good for cleans too ?
The moment you said "switch over to 6505" I knew exactly what I am expecting to hear as I've been playing a lot of 6505 2x12 combo lately... I didn't disappoint and actually amazed to be honest. It has the familiar bass and the lower frequency crunch of 6505! It may not be the exact sound but I thought they did a pretty good job mimicing 6505 sounding.
BTCH stands for Peavey Butcher. An old school Peavey amp sort of resembling Marshall JCM 800.
Please try the Vintage 30 and show us the results.
I run my Vypyr 75 through a Greenback. It is hell on earth
I had a Peavey Butcher... It was really Brutal...And Loud!!
Oh, so it's not Butt Cheek like I was guessing.
@@madmod I feel that the 75 watt is under appreciated. I went from 30 watt Marshall ss garbage to that. DAMN! What a difference!
@@danielschmidtke9213 They have such a good tone from bedroom volumes all the way to 13. I have used it as a pa for a wedding, and played alongside some loud drummers. I soldered a jack on it to run extension cabs if need be as well.
Love to hear it with a Vintage 30
2nd
Might need to have a 100w 4ohm speaker
Hell yeah dude
k100 at least but imo a texas heat will be suit better
@@laszlobank8318 gotta love k100s tho
I had this amp for the first 6 years of playing guitar, and it’s a great amp for how cheap it is. I just bought a line 6 spider to replace it, but the peavey is what got me into playing full songs because of all the built in effects. You can dial in some pretty good tones on this thing honestly.
What do you think of the Spyder and which model do you have? I haven't had one since the 3 but I got tired of it's tone quickly. Been considering trying a newer model out though
Ya, I would have passed on the Linesux and kept the Peavey.
@@j.t.cooper2963 I have a Mesa Boogie Dual Rectifier now, we’ve upgraded since I commented this lol.
I am amazed to see a modern video on one of these! I bought a VIP 3 six years ago and it has served every need I had in guitar playing. I have never needed to get a new amp or very many pedals because this thing does SO MUCH. I can't believe how clear and present this thing sounds for a relatively cheap practice amp, I love this amp to death. Mine is beat to all hell, turning the knobs down actually makes them go UP for some reason, but using the software you can find online bypasses that issue pretty easily. I still use mine every day and only recently, after six years of using it, have I thought of selling it and using an amp sim on my computer. This thing still holds up against every other amp in its category and I wish more beginner guitarists would buy these instead of Line 6 amps. I can't say enough good things about the Vypyr.
Hey have you had any luck with AMP sim's? There are a few open source ones. Seems interesting...
I bought one of these for my nephew some years ago. Back then I thought it sounded much better than any other offerings in that price range.
Definitely wish I’d gotten one of these instead of the ID:Core listening to this demo. Don’t even need an overdrive or nothin
You are a cool uncle!
@@rockabrilia I am the best, it's true.
Had one of the originals of these in high school. I feel it man that 6505 model always put a smile on my face. It has no business sounding that good!
The gain in this amp series is absolutely mindblowing considering the price. Better than a lot of more expensive SS amps. A cheap way to get that 'wall of distortion' sound that you see in live shows is to take this amp, another amp that has a different sounding distortion like a marshall SS amp and hook them both up to an EHX switchblade and use both A+B channels.
I have 6 of these at my teaching studio. I joke about taking all 6 out and stacking them to play live. Compared to other modelers in which I feel latency, with the Vypyr I feel zero latency. These are solid amps.
Any experience comparing this to a Vox VT series (newer models)?
Astral. I had the Vox Tonelab LE and the Vypyr sounds way better. The first version of the Vypyr sounds better than the current.
I had an old valvetronix that sounded way better than line 6 spider so 🤷♀️ ?
ever had a katana? if yes, how would you compare it to this? I mostly play thrash and death metal
I remember when this came out. I was always impressed with the tones & options for the price. Awesome video & tones Ola 💯🤘🏻
Thax Ola!!...the demo sold me purchased one tonight used 🤘🖤...
Yes! Finally someone in this sphere reviews that series. I have one of the older sieres from 10 years ago, and the analog modelling of Peavey's own and other "loud" tube amps is pretty damn good. (and the vintage models sound good to me, too, although I never owned one)
I have the VIP-1 and it’s been amazing to me for almost 10 years
Same. I've had the 30watt for close to 15 years and other than the knobs working a little funky it is still a great amp.
yea i'd probably still be primarily using it if I didn't want a more compact modeller
My vip-2 has done well for a few years. Switched from an orange combo amp to peavy. Now, i just use plugins for most things
I own Vip-3 very happy with him such a pitty that this brand doesn't have a model with more power, 200 watts or more
I can't use my VIP-1 because there's always been a high pitched whistle that drives me completely nuts. It sounds great, but that whistle...
5:07 This sounds insanely good.
good old machine head 🤘
@@mattisascending2 I'm sorry, do you know what song he's playing a riff from? I'd love to hear it but don't listen to them. EDIT: Found it!!
@@halrgang tell me please
@@hehe1680 It's called Old, it's the opening riff after the intro. Ola is playing it lower than the original recording.
@@halrgang Thanks bro
I owned this amp for several years, and it's brutal amp for the price. I used it on hunderds of gigs and not just for metal. I played even blues, funk, pop and dnb with it. In my opinion, if you play smaller gigs, up to 700-800 people, it is better option than some head/cab options.
But one thing that bothered me the most is not the character of the amp, it is the high end hiss that every amp model produced when you implement the gain. If they fixed this problem, this very amp would be the next bandit 112 in terms of the mass usage.
You seem to take anything and make it sound incredible. The most incredible thing in the room is you and your outstanding guitar skills. Thanks ola!
HOLY GET OF HIS SHIT
wow my dream come tru,ola your the best bro,but some of us are poor.its like you see us .this gives me hope.thanks for remembering the little guy HELLO FROM TEXAS.
The vip 1 is half the price of 3, it's small but still sounds good
@3:17 my eyes bugged out, I was NOT expecting it to sound that good!
The first "real" amp I ever had as a kid (that wasn't the one that came with the Behringer guitar starter pack) was an older version of the Vypyr, and while it wasn't amazing, getting to try all those different FX for that cheap was huge for me! I found the distortion channels to be more than fine in a bedroom practice setting. I gotta see if I still have that thing lying around
My dad has the old black panel Vypyr and it sounds absolutely killer, I grew up playing on that amp a lot. After a while, we added a VIP 2 into our collection and it sounded pretty much identical but with even more features so we used it as a bass amp. Highly recommend any iteration of the series
I had one of these in the early 2010’s and it always kicked ass. Yeah, I agree that it’s underrated and certainly overlooked.
a) never get tired of that Evergrey riff
b) impressed by the amp
The Vypyr 1 was my first amp ever, and I used the triple X model with the integrated boost, sounded great for my first amp. Served me well for a good 4-5 years.
Totally up for the "Mods with Ola" new section!!!
Yes! Put a Vintage 30 in there and let us hear what it sounds like!!!
I've done it - :)
It sounds different, more boxy, but not necessarily better. It is a modelling amp after all which generally do better with flatter response speakers (the amp models are voiced for it).
@@jrg770 I agree. It's already emulating those speakers anyway. Flat response is probably better.
I did and it sounded like crap
Modeling amp - best to have speakers with flat EQ because the modeling software is designed for those.
I had vypyr Vip-2 for like 4-5 years until i get some valve amplifier. It was great to play and to practice, sounds great.
We had the original Vyper, years ago. Glad to see they are still making a quality product!
Thanks for the review.ive been using this since October.plays like a dream
So happy these things are finally getting some respect! They’re super underrated. I couldn’t have asked for a better first amp!
I have had my Vypyr 75 for almost 10 years now. It is a hell of an amp!
I had the Peavey Vypyr, the 100w 2x12 combo... And freakin LOVED it! Cleans were Gorgeous as well ♥
These beautiful Beasts are so easy to use and sound GREAT. Peavey's motto is always "Good gear at Affordable prices". This one qualifies. I don't think the speaker is supposed to be up upgraded/replaceable since it's designed only specifically to perform with this amp.
Peaveys been top notch in the metal world since at least the 5150.
They really have!
oh, it goes back further than that.
They always have been great. The Peavey mace is in my opinion one of the best amps ever made
gnarliest doom/sludge tone i ever heard was through a classic 50 with the 4 10 cab
Don't forget the vtm 120
Man I instantly smiled when you played Old by MH when you changed amp model to 6505❤
Same...
Dude! Thats so sick, i had the vyper 2 as a teenager and still have it!. For a 75w its powerful as hell and has some killer tones ! And the sampera pedal that was designed to be used with it was awesome too! Awesome video big boy ❤❤❤
Yes, please do that upgrade, I'm super curious to see how it turns out!
I used to have a tune head of this amp with a 2x12 cab in my younger days and it really sounded damn good for a $300 thrift shop amp setup.
Definitely want to hear it with a speaker upgrade. I know some modelling amps use more "flat" response speakers to let the cab models do the work, so I'm curious how it would sound.
Awesome demo, ola. \m/ I’m a huge peavey fan agree that peavey vypyr amps are phenomenal. I also agree that these modeling amps are underrated. I use to own a peavey vypyr vip 1 amp and I personally like that amp better than a line 6 spider amp. It has such a raw and organically heavy sound. I personally like the 6550 and xxx models on this amp in heavy mode. Plus some of the other effects like chorus and synth effects are pretty good.
I can only agree. Using VIP2 for years and it djents, it chugs and makes me smile all day.
+1 for the Celestion upgrade comparison video!!!
Peavey has produced some seriously amazing amps over the years.
Not all were thát great, but if I think back to the 80s and what was possible with a solid-state Bandit, for instance?.. An absolute classic!
Then again I owned a Peavey Classic tube combo amp, and that one just didn't do anything useful for me.
Overall a good, solid brand.
It sounds sooooo brutal man!! That's amazing!!
I still have my Vypyr 75 and 10 years later its still my favourite sounding amp. The 6505 sound is just so good.
love your honests reviews and thats great to hear one on a peavey vypyr
I have the 1st version they came out with. Still use it for direct in recording, works great for that.
I bought the vip-1 when it first came out as a practice amp and I still play through it daily over a decade later.
Works great as a practice amp.
Ten years!!! Awesome I own a vypyr vip 3 since 2018 it's good but I would love to have one with more power
I’ve had this amp for almost a year myself, i have it hooked up with 2 cabinet speakers and the quality is just amazing
i have a peavey vypyr vip 2 and i fell in love with that amp. such a great sound, i recommend. 🙌🏻🙌🏻
This brought me back to High School! It's not the easiest to use but it was pretty brutal for sure.
Had one for over a year and that thing slays! F-ing tight if you want it to!
Thanks for helping me choose a good entry level metal amp, Ola! I was thinking about Randall RG75 G2 before I saw this one. You kick ass, man!
Thanks for producing this awesome video‼️. I’m gonna go try one out😍🎸🔥
Have always loved the Vypyr amps. Lot of bang for your buck. Would love to see you review an Ampeg VH140C someday, the brutalz are strong!
Alright Ola , I love the peavey distortion I'm using the old studio pro 65 watt from the late eighties. I bypassed the factory speaker and wired it to my 4x12 cab and it is louder and is just as brutal. I like it better than my marshall 3130 100watt head, cheers.
Saw this video yesterday buying it today watching this video again to hear how amazing it sounds
Picked up one of these about last year brand new from my local guitar shop. Love everything about this amp! Shout out to you Ola and Rob from Vintage Music, Best guitar store around in Canada!
Would love to see more about this amp. Like changing the speaker or direct input with Ola ir
shit yeah, man, I have a 30w vyper and tbh it's more brutal than just about any other ssamp out there I've tried in over 20 years. Hook up a brutal pedal and use the amp for an overdrive and you have yourself some super sick old school black metal goodness
Thank you Ola for this video ! You're a great man .I wish you the best. Greetings from France 🎶
Well, from my own experience Peavey are super reliable amps. Been using this amps and some expensive ones for some decades, and I can tell that in reliability they beat everybody else.
My last Peavey was a Valveking212 and had no complaints in a decade!
Again, maybe not the best tone machine, but hell they are the most reliable.
Tip* change the speakers, use an extension cab and run your favorite pedals/emulators/etc in the front and you're going to be surprised!
Great video Ola
I had the Vypyr Tube 60 watt version from back in like 2012 or so. That thing was awesome!
I have the 2x12 tube big one that's even more rare and it SCREAMS
@@Slevinlobell I thought about trading up, but was too scared.
Been recommending the viper forever, the new ones are killer. If you into metal, they're great for what they are. Easily get great stuff with minimal tweaking. It is a great buy for the cash.
I've had my vypyr 100 with the Sanpera 2 pedal for 10 years. Worth every penny!
I threw a V30 into a Katana 50 combo and it improved the sound and response 1000%. I got a tighter, punchier response with more growl, increased clarity, and it kept up with our drummer way easier and cut way better without having to sacrifice EQ. Put one in the Vyper so I can hear it and go blow 500 on an amp and speaker I don’t need! Peavey is such underrated gear!
Hey I have a boss katana MK2 50 watt combo and I've been trying to get mine to sound like this and I just can't idk if it's my amp or guitar I just just recently got a new guitar a schecter Damien 7 platinum with active emg's but they sound weird through my amp has like a weird thump to it when I play an open string but mainly I've been looking for this kind of sound
I have the VIP-2 and it's kickin ass!
Even the VIP 1 is a great amp. The Triple XXX model is amazing. So is the twin med gain with a tube screamer(onboard, and analog).
Peavey has been a great brand for decades, especially if you wanna do metal ! I loved the valveking, classic 30 (this one doesnt look like a metal amp, but it can do 80's heavy pretty well) and the Bandit 112 i had. I loved especially the Bandit for its warmth, sturdy construction and of course this grindin' distortion that became a classic. Apparently the Ultra is really good and of course the 5150/6505 is the way to go for metal, may it be oldschool or modern (also one of my favorites, never owned one, but always loved to play these). The Vypyr is no exception, but i'm not a fan of the digital processing thing goin'on inside, but that's more of a matter of taste from someone who owns amps twice his age ! So to sum it up, the vypyr is indeed good, and as long as it gets the job done, well, it's the right tool. Have a nice day everyone !
the vypyr was my first "real" amplifier back in 2009. I had a loooooong way to go as far as a stage-ready rig goes, but I had so much fun with mine back when I was 17. glad to see my parents didn't completely drop the ball in getting me that thing
I had one of these before. It was a great amp to have so I could leave my main amp at the practice space.
Also BTCH is the Peavey Butcher Amps.
When you have a bad day, watch an Ola video....makes it all better. Thank you and hello from Ohio.
Great video!!! Yes!!!! Do the upgrade!!!! I've thought often of doing that to entry level amps!!!
When he switched to the orange guitar the riff had a Mastodon-ish vibe \m/
OOLLLLLLLLLLDDDDDD MAAAAAAANNNNNNNNNNNN! love the machine head riffs
I own this amp for 2 years. Still use it daily next to my tube amp hughes & kettner. Kickass amp.
I like you dude. You’re not snobby but super down to earth and realistic about your reviews.
You finally demo'ed my amp!!
Busting out some Burn My Eyes era Machine Head, nice! 🤘
Please more budget amp videos! Love this!
Happy to see I’m not the only one who destroys patch cords by rolling around on them in my chair! 🤘😂
Great demo. Looking into buying one of these. Answered all my questions. Thanx!

Would love to hear this with a better speaker! It's so brutal already!!
9:04 this right here is the most relatable thing I’ve over seen in a getar video, it’s why I NEVER plug my getar in while the amp is in, or mess with other audio stuff on full volume. The amount of times I’ve given me or my sister when I recorded with her a heart attack because of random equipment screeching is uncountable.
Hey Ola!!!! Love the channel I watch your videos daily and you've became a huge inspiration for me and my music as well! I have had a question for the longest time ad I've researched the topic all over the place and really can't find what I'm looking for. I own a Peavey Valveking II 100 watt head that comes equipped with the XLR Record out jack on the back. I run my focusrite straight into it and then into Reaper and I get a pretty good chug tone out of it. Are there any tips you have for recording using this method??
I had a VIP 2 AND my buddy had this one and both sound killer. Has a built in delay reverb chorus etc all the fx you need. Killer amp for the price 🤘
VIP 2 vs Orange Crush 35RT?
@@TigrrrUnleashed I played the Crush 20 and it's a good amp but Not as metal as this. The Vypyr has fx too and the Crush doesn't. I'd buy the Peavey again honestly. I had the VIP 2
@@briangreene851 Thanks for your input, it means a lot to me esp. since the price difference between the two amps is so little.
@@TigrrrUnleashed I priced out what I needed with the Crush to make it really awesome and would have to buy a fx processor,an OD pedal etc. For my needs anyway the Peavey makes more since and you can buy the small foot controller for another $120 USD which adds a looper,wah/expression pedal and total preset control from your feet. Alot of fun!! Glad to help bro 👍
Thanks for the great review ... you probably like the amp so much because unlike the Boss and Line 6 the VYPYR uses analog distortion (TransTube). The Power Sponge is also part of it and actually patented - it simulates turning down the power section of a tube amp, and the SAG of a real tube amplifier. The gate on it is really not designed to be the type of gate you would find in a pedal....it's more to get rid of background noise and we realize it could be improved. The VYPYR Pro does have an adjustable gate. I hear you on the interface ...hard to control all that stuff from the front of an amp...most of the competitors you have to use outboard gear or USB to access features at least you can get to all features from the amp itself - Thanks again! -Fred
I have a Vypr 2 and a 6505mh and love them both. The Vypr is amazing to travel with because I can play guitar or bass through it and the built in fx are pretty solid.
Yah man..do that! This amp just went up in sales I'm sure.🎶✌
Upgrading the speaker cone would be cool to see. Maybe in the comparison you could also put it up against the real Peavy tube head + cab to see how close the combo speaker upgrade would get you to the real deal.
This
This video is 5 months old he did do that.
I've had my 1st gen Vypyr T60 for going on 12 years. Does everything I need and then some.
Side note: glad to see I'm not the only player flipping off the crowd when playing power chords.
Had that exact model almost 10 years and still holds up today, still mic it up for recordings
I still have the “Version 1.0” of the Peavey Vypyr 30, bought it as a road trip practice amp about 10 years ago and it’s been my living room amp ever since.
EDIT: +1 to a cab test
Years ago I had a 60w TUBE combo Peavey vypyr and it sounded sooooooo brutal. I was so happy with the fact it was a Tube amp lol
That tube vypyr line were special and I wish I had one of those. I'm glad you had one!
I still have one. Analog pre digital effects tube power. One of the best amps I played
I has one back in the day combo with two speakers it was perfect to play death metal with my band.
And the L.E.D.’s around each of the knobs are very necessary for the tone of the amp!
You should have a look at Jet City man - Mike Soldano and Martin Kidd (Victory Amps) have both worked on designs for them, and they sell for Bugera money.
